A Thousand Names of Sré Yamunä

çré-mandhätä uväca - Sré Mandhätä said; nämnäm - of

names; sahasram - thousand; krsnayäù - of the Yamunä;

sarva-siddhi-karam - granting all perfection;

param - great; vada - please tell; mäm - to me; muni-

cärdula - O tiger among the sages; tvam - you; sarvaj

24aù - all-knowing; nirämayaù - free from illusion.

Sré Mandhätä said: O tiger among the sages, you know

everything. You are never bewildered. Please tell me the thousand

names of Sré Yamunä, names that bring all perfection.

çré-krsna-vaca-kärakam

çré-saubharir uväca - Sré Saubhari said; nämnäm - of

names; sahasram - thousand; kälindyä - of Sri Yamunä;

mandhätäù - O Mandhätä; te - to you; vadämy - speak;

aham - I; sarva-siddhi-karam - granting all perfection;

divyam - transcendental; cri-krsna-vaca-kärakam - making Lord

Krsna into one's submissive servant.

Sri Saubhari said: O King Mandhätä, now I will tell you the

thousand transcendental names of Sri Yamunä, names that bring all

perfection, names that make Lord Krsna into one's submissive

servant.

stotra-mantrasya - Sri Yamunä-sahastra-näma mantra; saubhari-

rsiù - the sage is Saubhari; cri-yamunä - Sri Yamunä;

devatäù - is the deity; anusthup-chandaù - anustup is the

meter; mäyä-bijam - the maya-bija; iti - thus;

kilakam - kilaka; ramä-bijam - rama-bija; iti - thus;

sakhiù - sakti; cri-kalinda-nandini-prasäda-siddhy-arthe - to

attain the mercy of Sri Yamunä; viniyogaù - engaged.

Om. Here follows the Sri Yamunä-sahasra-näma-mantra. The

seer is Sri Saubhari Muni. The deity is Sri Yamunä. The meter is

anustup. The kilaka is mäyä-bija. The cakti is ramä-bija. The

purpose is to attain Sri Yamunä's mercy.

anklets; kujat - tinkling; känci - belt;

keyura - armlets; yuktäm - with; kanaka - gold;

mani - and jewels; maye - made of; bibhratim - wearing;

kunòale - earrings; dve - two; bhräjat - wearing;

cri - beautiful; nila - blue; vastra - garemnts;

sphurat - splendid; amala - pure; calat - moving;

hära - bhäram - necklaces; manojnäm - beautiful;

dhyäyet - should meditate; märtanòa - of the sun-god;

putrim - the daughter; tanu-kirana-caya - filled with light;

uddipta - blazing; dipa - lamp;

abhirämäm - beautiful; iti - thus; dhyänam - the meditation.

The meditation:

One should meditate on the sun-god's beautiful lotus-eyed

daughter, Sri Yamunä, who is splendid as a host of dark clouds

and glorious as a blazing lamp, and who wears jewel anklets,

tinkling bracelets and belt, earrings of gold and jewels,

splendidly beautiful blue garments, and splendid necklaces that

move to and fro.

Thus ends the meditation.

A person who once recites these names need not fear thieves

crutvä - hearing; tu - indeed; nirmalaù - pure.

By hearing these thousand names a brähmana attains great

brahminical power, a ksatriya becomes king of the world, a vaicya

becomes the master of great wealth, and a cudra becomes pure in heart.

puja-käle - at the time of worship; tu - indeed;

yaù - one who; nityam - regularly; pathate - recites;

nä - not; sa - he; päpena - by sin; padma-patram - a

lotus leaf; iva - like; ambhasä - by water.

A person who when he worships the Lord recites these

thousand names of Sri Yamunä is never touched by sin as a lotus

leaf is never touched by water.

mahi-räjyam - the kingdom of the seven continents;

präpnuyät - attains; na - not; atra - here;

samcayaù - doubt.

A person who for one year every day recites these names one

hundred times and every day performs the Yamunä-patala, Yamunä-

paddhati, Yamunä-stava, and Yamunä-kavaca, becomes king of the

seven dvipas. Of this there is no doubt.

this world.

A person who, devoted to Sri Yamunä and free of material

motives, recites these prayers, attains the three goals of life,

becomes saintly, and becomes liberated even in this world.

A person who recites these hundred names goes to Goloka, the

beautiful realm filled with flowering vines by the Yamunä's

shore, the sound of intoxicated bees, and the charming pastimes

of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
