Çré Rädhikä-viväha-varëana

Description of Çré Rädhikä's Wedding

Text 1

çré-närada uväca

gäç cärayan nandanam aìka-deçe

samlälayan düratamaà sakäçät

kalindajä-téra-saméra-kampitaà

nando 'pi bhäëòéravanaà jagäma

çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; gäù—the cows;

cärayan—herding; nandanam—son; aìka-deçe—on the

lap; samlälayan—caressing; düratamam—for a long

time; sakäçät—in the presence; kalindajä—of the

Yamunä; téra—on the shore; saméra—the breeze;

kampitam—moving; nandaù—Nanda; api—even;

bhäëòéravanam—Bhäëòéravana; jagäma—went.

Herding the cows and holding His infant son in his arms,

Nanda went to Bhäëòéravana, which trembled with the breezes

coming from the Yamunä's shore.

Text 2

kåñëecchayä vegataro 'tha väto

ghanair abhün meduram ambaraà ca

tamäla-népa-druma-pallavaiç ca

patadbhir ejadbhir atéva-bhékaiù

kåñëa—of Lord Kåñëa; icchayä—by the desire;

vegataraù—quickly; atha—then; vätaù—breeze;

ghanaiù—with clouds; abhüt—became; meduram—thick;

ambaram—the sky; ca—and; tamäla—tamäla;

népa—and kadamba; druma—trees; pallavaiù—with

twigs; ca—and; patadbhiù—falling;

ejadbhiù—trembling; atéva—very; bhékaiù—frightening.

Then, by Kåñëa's wish, the sky became filled with clouds and

a strong wind fearfully moved the new tamäla and kadamba twigs

and made them fall.

Text 3

tad-andha-käre mahati prajäte

bäle rudaty aìka-gate 'ti-bhéte

nando bhayaà präpa çiçuà sa bibhrad

dharià pareçaà çaraëaà jagäma

tad-andha-kare—blinding darkness; mahati—great;

prajäte—manifest; bäle—the boy; rudati—crying;

aìka-gate—on his arm; ati-bhéte—very frightened;

nandaù—Nanda; bhayam—fear; präpa—attained;

çiçum—infant; saù—he; bibhrat—holding; harim—of

Lord Hari; para-éçam—the Supreme Personality of

Godhead; çaraëaà jagäma—took shelter.

When a great and blinding darkness came and the frightened

infant in his arm cried, Nanda became afraid. Clutching his boy,

he took shelter of Lord Hari, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Text 4

tadaiva koöy-arka-samüha-déptir

ägacchatéväcalati diçäsu

babhüva tasyäà våñabhänu-putréà

dadarça rädhäà nava-nanda-räjaù

tadä—then; eva—indeed; koöi—millions;

arka—of suns; samüha—multitude; déptiù—splendor;

ägacchati—came; iva—as if; äcalati—moves;

diçäsu—in the directions; babhüva—became; tasyäm—in

that; våñabhänu—of King Våñabhänu; putrém—the

daughter; dadarça—saw; rädhäm—Rädhä; nava-

nanda-räjaù—Nanda Mahäräja, the king of the nine Nandas.

Then, as an effulgence greater than millions of suns

converged on him from all directions, Nanda Mahäräja, the king of

the nine Nandas, saw Våñabhänu's daughter Rädhä, . . .

koöéndu-bimba-dyutim ädadhänäà

nélämbaräà sundaram ädi-varëäm

maïjéra-dhéra-dhvani-nüpuräëäm

äbibhratéà çabdam atéva maïjum

koöi—millions; indu-bimba—of moons;

dyutim—glory; ädadhänam—manifesting; néla—blue;

ambaram—garments; sundaram—handsome; ädi-varëam—first

class; maïjéra—of anklets; dhéra—soft;

dhvani—sound; nüpuräëäm—ankle-bells;

äbibhratém—wearing; çabdam—sound; atéva—very;

maïjum—beautiful.

. . . who was fair and splendid as millions of moons, dressed in

blue garments, decorated with anklets and anklebells that tinkled

sweetly, . . .

käïcé-kalä-kaìkana-çabda-miçräà

häräìguléyäìgada-visphurantém

çré-näsikä-mauktika-haàçikébhiù

çré-kanöùa-cüòä-maëi-kuëòaläòhyäm

käïcé-kalä—of a belt; kaìkana—bracelets;

çabda—sound; miçram—mixed; häù—necklace;

aìguléya—rings; aìgada—armlets;

visphurantém—splendid; çré-näsikä—on Her nose;

mauktika—a pearl; haàçikébhiù—with anklets; çré-

kanöùa—on Her neck; cüòä—crest; maëi—jewel;

kuëòala—earrings; äòhyäm—opulent.

. . . who wore tinkling bracelets and a tinkling belt, who was

splendid with armlets, rings, and a necklace, and who was opulent

with a nose-pearl, anklets, a necklace-jewel, and earrings.

Text 7

tat-tejasä dharñita äçu nando

natvätha täm äha kåtäïjaliù san

ayaà tu säkñät puruñottamas tvaà

priyäsya mukhyäsi tadaiva rädhe

tat—of Her; tejasä—by the splendor;

dharñitaù—overwhelmed; äçu—at once; nandaù—Nanda;

natvä—bowing; atha—then; täm—to Her;

äha—said; kåtäïjaliù—with folded hands;

san—being; ayam—He; tu—indeed;

säkñät—directly; puruñottamaù—the Supreme Personality of

Godhead; tvam—You; priyä—the beloved; asya—of

Him; mukhyä—most important; asi—are;

tadä—then; eva—indeed; rädhe—O Rädhä.

Overwhelmed by Her effulgence, Nanda bowed down and with

folded hands said, "He is the original Supreme

Personality of Godhead, and You, O Rädhä, are His first beloved.

Text 8

guptaà tv idaà garga-mukhena vedmi

gåhäëa rädhe nija-nätham aìkät

enaà gåhaà präpaya megha-bhétaà

vadämi cetthaà prakåter guëäòhyaù

guptam—secret; tu—certainly; idam—this;

garga-mukhena—from Garga Muni's mouth; vedmi—I know;

gåhäëa—please take; rädhe—O Rädhä; nija—Your own;

nätham—Lord; aìkät—from my arms; enam—Him;

gåham—home; präpaya—please take; megha—of the

clouds; bhétam—frightened; vadämi—I say;

ca—and; ittham—thus; prakåteù—of matter;

guëa—with the modes; äòhyaù—enriched.

"I know this secret from the mouth of Garga Muni. O

Rädhä, please take Your Lord from my arms. Now that the clouds

have frightened Him, please take Him home. As if I were a person

controlled by the modes of material nature, I say this (that He

is frightened).

Text 9

namämi tubhyaà bhuvi rakña mäà tvaà

kåñëa-priyäsi prakåteù paräà tvam

çrutvä vacas tasya tadaiva rädhä

candrävalé gopa-patim tam äha

namämi—I offer my respectful obeisances; tubhyam—to

You; bhuvi—in this world; rakña—please protect;

mäm—me; tvam—You; kåñëa—of Lord Kåñëa;

priyä—the beloved; asi—You are; prakåteù—the modes of

nature; paräm—beyond; tvam—You;

çrutvä—hearing; vacaù—words; tasya—of him;

tadä—then; eva—indeed; rädhä—Rädhä; candra—of

moons; ävalé—a host; gopa—of the gopas;

patim—to the king; tam—to him; äha—said.

"I offer my respectful obeisances to You. Please

protect me in this world. You are Kåñëa's dearmost. You are

beyond the modes of material nature."

Hearing these words, Çré Rädhä, who was splendid as a host

of moons, spoke to the king of the gopas.

Text 10

çré-rädhoväca

varaà paraà brühi mahä-mate tvaà

yathepsitam sarva-janair duräpam

ahaà prasannä tava bhakti-bhävän

mad-darçanaà durlabham eva nanda

çré-rädhä uväca—Çré Rädhä said; varam—benediction;

param—supreme; brühi—please say; mahä-mate—O noble-

hearted one; tvam—you; yathä—as;

ipsitam—desired; sarva—by all; janaiù—people;

duräpam—difficult to attain; aham—I; prasannä—am

pleased; tava—of you; bhakti-bhävät—by devotion;

mat—of Me; darçanam—sight; durlabham—difficult to

attain; eva—indeed; nanda—O Nanda.

Then Çré Rädhä said: O noble-hearted one, ask for a

benediction, for anything you wish, for anything impossible for

anyone to attain. I am pleased by your sincere devotion. O Nanda

it is very difficult for anyone to see Me.

Text 11

çré-nanda uväca

yadi prasannäsi tadä bhaven me

bhaktir dåòhä kau yuvayoù padäbje

satäà ca bhaktis tava bhakti-bhäjäà

saìgaù sadä me 'tha yuge yuge ca

çré-nandaù uväca—Çré Nanda said; yadi—if;

prasannä—pleased; asi—You are; tadä—then;

bhavet—may be; me—to Me; bhaktiù—devotion;

dåòhä—firm; kau—in this world; yuvayoù—of You

both; pada-abje—for the lotus feet; satäm—of the

devotees; ca—also; bhaktiù—devotion; tava—to

You; bhakti-bhäjäm—who have devotion;

saìgaù—association; sadä—always; me—of me;

atha—then; yuge yuge—millennium after millennium;

ca—and.

If You are pleased then let me have firm devotion for the

lotus feet of You both, and let me have devotion for Your

devotees, and let me have their company. Let me have this

millennium after millennium.

Text 12

çré-närada uväca

tathästu coktvätha harià karäbhyäà

jagräha rädhä nija-nätham aìkät

gate 'tha nande praëate vrajeçe

tadä hi bhäëòéravanaà jagäma

çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; tathä—so;

astu—be it; ca—also; uktvä—saying;

atha—then; harim—Lord Hari; karäbhyäm—with both

hands; jagräha—taking; rädhä—Rädhä; nija-

nätham—Her own Lord; aìkät—from the arms;

gate—gone; atha—then; nande—when Nanda;

praëate—bowing down; vraja—of Vraja; éçe—the king;

tadä—then; hi—indeed; bhäëòéravanam—to

Bhäëòéravana; jagäma—went.

Çré Närada said: Saying "So be it", with both hands

Rädhä took Lord Hari from Nanda's arms. When Vraja's king Nanda

offered his obeisances and left, She went to Bhäëòéravana forest.

Text 13

goloka-lokäc ca purä samägatä

bhümir nijaà svaà vapur ädadhänä

yä padmarägädi-khacit-suvarëä

babhüva sä tat-kñaëam eva sarvä

goloka-lokät—from the realm of Goloka; ca—also;

purä—previously; samägatä—come; bhümiù—earth;

nijam—own; svam—own; vapuù—form;

ädadhänä—manifesting; yä—who; padmaräga—rubies;

ädi—beginning with; khacit—studded; suvarëä—gold;

babhüva—became; sä—She; tat-kñaëam—at that

moment; eva—indeed; sarvä—all.

Then the spiritual ground came from the realm of Goloka. In

a moment everything was golden and studded with rubies and many

jewels.

Text 14

våndävanaà divya-vapur dadhänaà

våkñair varaiù käma-dughaiù sahaiva

kalinda-putré ca suvarëa-saudhaiù

çré-ratna-sopänamayé babhüva

våndävanam—Våndävana; divya—transcendental and

splendid; vapuù—form; dadhänam—manifesting;

våkñaiù—with trees; varaiù—excellent; käma-

dughaiù—fulfilling all desires; saha—with;

eva—indeed; kalinda-putré—the Yamunä; ca—also;

suvarëa—golden; saudhaiù—with palaces;

çré—beautiful; ratna—jewel; sopänamayé—with

staircases; babhüva—became.

Våndävana forest manifested a splendid transcendental form

with beautiful desire-trees, and the Yamunä's shore had jewel

steps and golden palaces.

Text 15

govardhano ratna-çilämayo 'bhüt

suvarëa-çåìgaiù paritaù sphuradbhiù

mattälibhir nirjhara-sundarébhir

därébhir uccäìga-karéva räjan

govardhanaù—Govardhana; ratna—jewel;

çilä—stones; mayaù—made of; abhüt—became;

suvarëa—golden; çåìgaiù—with peaks;

paritaù—everywhere; sphuradbhiù—glistening;

matta—maddened; alibhiù—with bumblebees;

nirjhara—swiftly flowing mountain streams;

sundarébhiù—beautiful; därébhiù—with caves;

ucca—great; aìga—body; karé—elephant;

iva—like; räjan—O king.

Govardhana was made of jewels and had glistening golden

peaks everywhere, maddened bees, and caves beautiful with

swiftly-flowing streams. O king, it was like a great, gigantic

elephant.

Text 16

tadä nikuïjo 'pi nijaà vapur dadhat

sabhä-yutaà praìgana-divya-maëòapam

vasanta-mädhurya-dharaà madhuvratair

mayüra-pärävata-kokila-dhvanim

tadä—then; nikuïjaù—forest grove;

api—also; nijam—own; vapuù—form;

dadhät—manifested; sabhä—assembly-halls;

yutam—with; praìgana—courtyards; divya—splendid;

maëòapam—pavilions; vasanta—of spring;

mädhurya—sweetness; dharam—holding; madhuvrataiù—with

bees; mayüra—peacocks; pärävata—pärävatas;

kokila—and cuckoos; dhvanim—the sound.

Then the forest grove assumed its real form with many

assembly houses, courtyards, splendid pavilions, bumblebees, and

the cooing of peacocks, pärävatas, and cuckoos. It was filled

with the sweetness of spring.

Text 17

suvarëa-ratnädi-khacit-patair våtaà

patat-patäkävalibhir viräjitam

saraù-sphuöadbhir bhramarävaléòhitair

vicarcitaà käïcana-cäru-paìkajaiù

suvarëa—gold; ratna—jewels; ädi—beginning

with; khacit—studded; paöaiù—woth roofs;

våtam—filled; patat—fluttering; patäkä-avalibhiù—with

rows of flags; viräjitam—splendid; saraù—a lake;

sphuöadbhiù—blossoming; bhramara—by bees;

avaléòhitaiù—licked; vicarcitam—anointed;

24cana—golden; cäru—beautiful; paìkajaiù—with lotus

flowers.

It was filled with roofs of gold and jewels, splendid with

fluttering flags, and anointed with beautiful blossoming lake-

growing golden lotuses licked by swarms of black bees.

Text 18

tadaiva säkñät puruñottamottamo

babhüva kaiçora-vapur ghana-prabhaù

pétämbaraù kaustubha-ratna-bhüñaëo

vaàçé-dharo manmatha-räçi-mohanaù

tadä—then; eva—indeed; säkñät—directly;

puruñottamottamaù—the Supreme Personality of Godhead;

babhüva—became; kaiçora—adolescent; vapuù—form;

ghana—as a dark cloud; prabhaù—splendor;

péta—yellow; ambaraù—garments; kaustubha-ratna—the

Kaustubha jewel; bhüñaëaù—decoration; vaàçé—the

flute; dharaù—holding; manmatha—of Kämadevas;

räçi—multitude; mohanaù—enchanting.

Then the Supreme Personality of Godhead became a teen-age

youth splendid as a dark cloud, dressed in yellow garments,

decorated with the Kaustubha gem, holding a flute, and more

enchanting than a great host of Kämadevas.

Text 19

bhujena saìgåhya hasan priyäà harir

jagäma madhye su-viväha-maëòapam

viväha-sambhära-yutaù sa-mekhalaà

sudarbhamad-väri-ghaöädi-maëòitam

bhujena—with an arm; saìgåhya—taking;

hasan—smiling; priyäm—His beloved; hariù—Lord

Hari; jagäma—went; madhye—to the middle;

su—beautiful; viväha—marriage; maëòapam—pavilion;

viväha—for the marriage; sambhära—paraphernalia;

yutaù—with; sa-mekhalam—with a belt; su-darbha-

mat—with kuça grass; väri—water; ghaöa—pots;

ädi—beginning with; maëòitam—decorated.

Smiling, Lord Hari took His beloved by the arm, and with the

wedding paraphernalia went to the wedding-pavilion, which was

decorated with mekhaläs, kuça grass, waterpots, and many other

things.

Text 20

tatraiva siàhäsana udgate vare

parasparaà sammalitau virejatuù

paraà bruvantau madhuraà ca dam-paté

sphurat-prabhau khe ca taòid-ghanäv iva

tatra—there; eva—indeed; siàhäsane—on a

throne; udgate—manifested; vare—excellent;

parasparam—together; sammälitau—caressing;

virejatuù—were splendidly manifested; param—then;

bruvantau—conversing; madhuram—sweetly; ca—also;

dam-paté—husband and wife; sphurat-prabhau—splendid;

khe—in the sky; ca—also; taòit—lighting;

ghanau—and cloud; iva—like.

Embracing and sweetly conversing on a beautiful throne

there, They shone like a splendid lightning flash and a dark

cloud in the sky.

Text 21

tadämbaräd deva-varo vidhiù prabhuù

samägatas tasya parasya sammukhe

natvä tad-aìghré hy uçaté giräbhiù

kåtäïjaliç cäru catur-mukho jagau

tadä—then; ambarät—from the sky; deva-varaù—the

best of the demigods; vidhiù—Brahmä;

prabhuù—Lord; samägataù—came; tasya—of Him;

parasya—the Supreme; sammukhe—facing; natvä—bowing

down; tad-aìghré—at His feet; hi—" uçaté

giräbhiù—with sweet words; kåtäïjaliù—with folded

hands; cäru—eloquently; catur-mukhaù—four-headed

Brahmä; jagau—said.

Then Lord Brahmä, the best of the demigods, came from the

sky. Bowing down before Lord Kåñëa, with folded hands he

eloquently and sweetly spoke.

çré-brahmoväca

anädim ädyaà puruñottamottamaà

çré-kåñëacandraà nija-bhakta-vatsalam

svayaà tv asaìkhyäëòa-patià parät paraà

rädhä-patià tväà çaraëaà vrajämy aham

çré-brahmä uväca—Lord Barham‘ said; anädim—without

beginning; ädyam—the beginning; puruñottamottamam—the

original Supreme Personality of Godhead; çré-

kåñëacandram—Çré Kåñëacandra; nija—own;

bhakta—devotees; vatsalam—affectionate;

svayam—personally; tu—indeed; asaìkhya—countless;

aëòa—of universes; patim—the master; parät

param—greater than the greatest; rädhä-patim—the master of

Rädhä; tväm—of You; çaraëaà vrajämy aham—I take

shelter.

Çré Brahmä said: I take shelter of You, the original Supreme

Personality of Godhead, Çré Kåñëacandra, without beginning, the

beginning of everything, affectionate to Your devotees, the

master of countless universes, greater than the greatest, and the

husband of Rädhä.

goloka-näthas tvam atéva-lélo

lélävatéyaà nija-loka-lélä

vaikuëöha-nätho 'si yadä tvam eva

lakñmés tadeyaà våñabhänujä hi

goloka-näthaù—the master of Goloka; tvam—You;

atéva-lélaù—playful; lélävaté—playful; iyam—she;

nija—own; loka—realm; lélä—pastimes;

vaikuëöha-näthaù—the master of Vaikuëöha; asi—You are;

yadä—when; tvam—You; eva—indeed;

lakñméù—Lakñmé; tadä—then; iyam—She;

våñabhänujä—the daughter of Våñabhänu; hi—certainly.

You are the playful king of Goloka and She is Your playful

companion. When You are the king of Vaikuëöha, She, the daughter

of Våñabhänu, is Goddess Lakñmé.

Text 24

tvaà rämacandro janakätmajeyaà

bhümau haris tvaà kamalälayeyam

yajïävatäro 'si yadä tadeyaà

çré-dakñiëä stré prati-patné-mukhyä

tvam—You; rämacandraù—Rämacandra; janakätmajä—the

daughter of Janaka; iyam—She; bhümau—on the

earth; hariù—Lord Hari; tvam—You;

kamalälayä—the abode of Kamalä; iyam—She; yaj

24ävatäraù—Yajïa-avatära; asi—You are;

yadä—when; tadä—thenl iyam—She; çré-dakñiëä—Çré

Dakñiëä; stré—wife; prati-patné-mukhyä—the best of wives.

When in this world You are Rämacandra, She is Janaka's

daughter Sétä. When You are Lord Hari, She is Kamalä. When You

are Yajïa-avatära, She is Çré Dakñiëä, the best of wives.

Text 25

tvaà närasiàho 'si ramä tadeyaà

näräyaëas tvaà ca nareëa yuktaù

tad tv iyaà çäntir atéva säkñäc

chäyeva yätä ca tavänurüpä

tvam—You; närasiàhaù—Nåsiàha; asi—You are;

ramä—Ramä; tadä—then; iyam—She;

näräyaëaù—Näräyaëa; tvam—You; ca—and;

nareëa—with Nara; yuktaù—accompanied; tat—then;

tu—indeed; iyam—She; çäntiù—Goddess Çänti;

atéva—greatly; säkñät—directly; chäyä-—a shadow;

iva—as if; yätä—come; ca—also; tava—You;

anurüpä—following.

When You are Nåsiàha, She is Ramä. When You are Nara's

friend Näräyaëa Åñi, She becomes Goddess Çänti and follows You

like a shadow.

Text 26

tvaà brahma ceyaà prakåtis taöasthä

kälo yademaà ca viduù pradhänam

mahän yadä tvaà jagad-aìkuro 'si

rädhä tadeyaà sa-guëä ca mäyä

tvam—You; brahma—Brahman; ca—and;

iyam—She; prakåtiù—material nature;

taöasthä—borderline; kälaù—time; yadä—when;

imam—She; ca—also; viduù—they know;

pradhänam—pradhäna; mahän—mahat-tattva; yadä—when;

tvam—You; jagat—the universe;

aìkuraù—sprouting; asi—You are; rädhä—Rädhä;

tadä—then; iyam—She; sa-guëä—with the three modes;

ca—also; mäyä—illusory potency.

When You are Brahman, She is Prakåti. When You are Time, the

wise know She is Pradhäna. When You are the Mahat-tattva, from

which the universes have sprouted, Rädhä is the potency Mäyä,

filled with the three modes.

Text 27

yadäntarätmä viditaç caturbhis

tadä tv iyaà lakñaëä-rüpa-våttiù

yadä viräò-deha-dharas tvam eva

tadäkhilaà vä bhuvi dhäraëeyam

yadä—when; antarätmä—within the heart;

viditaù—known; caturbhiù—by four; tadä—then;

tu—indeed; iyam—She; lakñaëä-rüpa-våttiù—Lakñaëä-

våtti; yadä—when; viräò-deha-dharaù—the universal

form; tvam—You; eva—indeed; tadä—then;

akhilam—everything; vä—or; bhuvi—on the earth;

dhäraëä—the earth; iyam—She.

When You become the four things in the heart, She becomes

the power of understanding something from a hint. When You become

the universal form, which includes everything, She becomes the

earth.

Note: The four things in the heart are the heart, mind,

intelligence, and false-ego.

çyämaà ca gauraà viditaà dvidhä mahas

tavaiva säkñät puruñottamottamam

goloka-dhämädhipatià pareçaà

parät paraà tvaà çaraëaà vrajämy aham

çyämam—dark; ca—and; gauram—fair;

viditam—known; dvidhä—in two; mahaù—splendor;

tava—of You; eva—indeed; säkñät—directly;

puruñottamottamam—the Supreme Personality of Godhead;

goloka-dhäma—the abode of Goloka; adhipatim—the master;

pareçam—the Supreme Lord; parät—than the greatest;

param—greater; tvam—You; çaraëaà vrajämy aham—I take

shelter.

I take shelter of You, who are the Supreme Personality of

Godhead, greater than the greatest, the master of Goloka-dhäma,

and who now appear as a fair and a dark splendor.

Text 29

sadä paöhed yo yugala-stavaà paraà

goloka-dhäma-pravaraà prayäti saù

ihaiva saundarya-samåddhi-siddhayo

bhavanti tasyäpi nisargataù punaù

sadä—regularly; paöhet—recites; yaù—who;

yugala—of the divine couple; stavam—prayer;

param—transcendental; goloka-dhäma-pravaram—to the

transcendental abode of Goloka; prayäti—goes;

saù—he; iha—here; eva—indeed; saundarya—with

beauty; samåddhi—opulence; siddhayaù—perfections;

bhavanti—here; tasya—of him; api—also;

nisargataù-naturally; punaù—again.

A person who regularly recites these prayers describing the

divine couple will go to the transcendental abode of Goloka. Even

in this world he will be endowed with handsomeness, opulence, and

many perfections.

Text 30

are already a loving husband and wife. Still, following the ways

of this world, I will now perform Your wedding-ceremony.

Then Brahmä rose, ignited the sacred fire, and performed the

Vedic wedding-ceremony of the divine couple.

Brahmä performed the wedding-ceremony of Lord Hari and Çré

Rädhikä. He had Them circumambulate the sacred fire and bow down

before it, and then Brahmä, the knower of the Vedas, recited the

seven mantras.

karaà ca saàsthäpya hareù karaà punaù

çré-rädhikäyäù kila påñöha-deçake

saàsthäpya manträàç ca vidhiù prapäöhayan

Placing Çré Rädhikä's hand on Lord Hari's chest and Lord

rädhä karäbhyäà pradadau ca mälikäà

kiïjalkinéà kåñëa-gale 'linädiném

hareù karäbhyäà våñabhänujä gale

tataç ca vahnià praëamayya veda-vit

rädhä—Rädhä; karäbhyäm—with both hands;

pradadau—gave; ca—also; mälikäm—a garland;

kiïjalkiném—of lotus flowers; kåñëa-gale—on Kåñëa's

neck; ali—of bees; nädiném—filled with the

humming; hareù—of Lord Hari; karäbhyäm—with both

hands; våñabhänujä—the daughter of Våñabhänu; gale—on

the neck; tataù—then; ca—and; vahnim—the

fire; praëamayya—having bow down; veda-vit—the knower

of the Vedas.

Then with both hands Çré Rädhä placed on Lord Kåñëa's neck a

lotus garland filled the the humming of bees. Then with both

hands Lord Hari placed on Çré Rädhä's neck a similar garland.

Then Brahmä had Them bow down before the sacred fire.

samväsayäm äsa su-péöhayoç ca tau

kåtäïjalé mauna-yutau pitämahaù

tau päöhayäm äsa tu païca-mantrakaà

samarpya rädhäà ca piteva kanyakäm

samväsayäm äsa—placed; su-péöhayoù—on two thrones;

ca—also; tau—Them; kåtäïjalé—with folded

hands; mauna-yutau—silent; pitämahaù—Brahmä;

tau—Them; päöhayäm äsa—recited; tu—indeed;

païca-mantrakam—five mantras; samarpya—giving;

rädhäm—Rädhä; ca—and; pitä—a father;

iva—like; kanyakäm—a daughter.

Placing the silent divine couple on two thrones, with folded

hands Brahmä recited five mantras. Then, as a father gives away

his daughter, Brahmä gave away Çré Rädhä.

Text 36

puñpäni devä vavåñus tadä nåpa

vidyädharébhir nanåtuù suräìganäù

gandharva-vidyädhara-cäraëäù kalaà

sa-kinnaräù kåñëa-su-maìgalaà jaguù

puñpäni—flowers; deväù—the demigods;

vavåñuù—showered; tadä—then; nåpa—O king;

vidyädharébhiù—with the Vidyädgharés; nanåtuù—danced;

suräìganäù—the demigoddesses; gandharva—Gandharva;

vidyädhara—Vidyadhara; cäraëäù—and Cäraëas;

kalam—sweetly; sa-kinnaräù—with thr Kinnaras;

kåñëa—for Lord Kåñëa; su-maìgalam—great auspiciousness;

jaguù—sang.

O king, then the demigods showered flowers, and the

demigoddesses danced with the Vidyädharés. The Gandharvas,

Vidyädharas, Cäraëas, and Kinnaras sang auspicious songs

glorifying Lord Kåñëa.

Text 37

mådaìga-véëä-muru-yañöi-veëavaù

çaìkhänakä dundubhayaù sa-tälakäù

nedur muhur deva-varair divi sthitair

jayety abhün maìgala-çabdam uccakaiù

mådaìga-véëä-muru-yañöi-veëavaù—mådaìgas, véëäs, murus,

yañöis, and veëus; saìkhänakä—çaìkhas and anakas;

dundubhayaù—dundubhis; sa-tälakäù—with tälakas;

neduù—sounded; muhuù—again and again; deva-varaiù—by

the great demigods; divi—in heaven;

sthitaiù—staying; jaya—glories!; iti-thus;

abhüt—was; maìgala—auspicious; çabdam—sound;

uccakaiù—loudly.

Again and again the great demigods in heaven sounded many

mådaìgas, véëäs, murus, yañöis, veëus, çaìkhas, anakas, and

tälakas. Calling out "Glory!" they made an auspicious

sound.

uväca tatraiva vidhià hariù svayaà

yathepsitaà tvaà vada vipra dakñiëäm

tadä harià präha vidhiù prabho me

dehi tvad-aìghryor nija-bhakti-dakñiëam

uväca—said; tatra—there; eva—indeed;

When Lord Hari said to Brahmä, "Please ask whatever

you wish as dakñiëä," Brahmä replied to Lord Hari, "O

Lord, as dakñiëä please give me devotion for Your feet."

Text 39

tathästu väkyaà vadato vidhir hareù

çré-rädhikäyäç ca pada-dvayaà çubham

natvä karäbhyäà çirasä punaù punar

jagäma gehaà praëataù praharñitaù

tathä—so; astu—be it; väkyam—words;

vadataù—saying; vidhiù—Brahmä; hareù—of Lord Hari;

When Lord Hari said "So be it", Brahmä again and

again placed His head at the beautiful and auspicious feet of

Lord Hari and Çré Rädhikä. Then, happy and humbly bowing down,

Brahmä left for his own home.

Text 40

tato nikuïjeñu catur-vidhännaà

divyaà manojïaà priyayä pradattam

jaghäsa kåñëaù prahasan parätmä

kåñëena dattaà kramukaà ca rädhä

tataù—then; nikuïjeñu—in the forest groves;

catur-vidha—four kinds; annam—of food;

divyam—divine; manojïam—delicious; priyayä—by

His beloved; pradattam—given; jaghäsa—ate;

kåñëaù—Kåñëa; prahasan—laughing; parätmä—the Supreme

Lord; kåñëena—by Kåñëa; dattam—given;

Then, in the forest groves the Supreme Personality of

Godhead, Lord Kåñëa, ate four kinds of delicious divine foods His

beloved offered, and Çré Rädhä chewed betelnuts Kåñëa offered.

harir gåhétvä pracacäla kuïje

jagäma jalpan madhuraà präpaçyan

Taking His beloved's hand, Lord Hari walked in the forest

grove. Taking sweetly as He gazed at the beautiful Yamunä,

Våndävana forest, and the many flowering vines, He walked.

çrimal-latä-kuïja-nikuïja-madhye

niléyamänaà prahasantam eva

vilokya çäkhäntaritaà ca rädhä

jagräha pétämbaram ävrajanté

çrimat—beautiful; latä—of flowering vines;

kuïja—grove; nikuïja—grove; madhye—in

teh midst; niléyamänam—entering;

prahasantam—smiling; eva—indeed; vilokya—seeing;

çäkha—a branch; antaritam—hidden behind;

ca—also; rädhä—Rädhä; jagräha—grasped;

péta—yellow; ambaram—grament; ävrajanté—following.

Kåñëa laughed and disappeared in a grove of beautiful

flowering vines. Seeing Him hiding behind a tree, Rädhä went up

to Him and grasped His yellow garment.

dudräva rädhä hari-hasta-padmäj

jhaìkäram aìghryoù pratikurvaté kau

niléyamänä yamunä-nikuïje

punar vrajanté hari-hasta-mäträt

dudräva—ran; rädhä—Rädhä; hari—of Lord Hari;

hasta—hand; padmät—lotus; jhaìkäram—tinkling;

aìghryoù—of the feet; pratikurvaté—doing; kau—on

the ground; niléyamänä—disappearing; yamunä-niku

Fleeing from Lord Hari's lotus hand, Her feet thumping

against the ground, She disappeared in a forest by the Yamunä,

but was pulled out again by Lord Hari's hand.

Text 44

yathä tamälaù kala-dhauta-vallyä

ghane yathä caïcalayä cakästi

nélo 'dri-räjo nikañäçma-khanyä

çré-rädhayädyästu tayä ramaëyä

yathä—as; tamälaù—a tamala tree; kala-dhauta-

vallyä—with a vine of golden flowers; ghanaù—a dark

cloud; yathä—as; caïcalayä—with

lightning; cakästi—shines; nélaù—dark; adri—of

mountains; räjaù—king; nikañäçma-khanyä—with a mine

of nikaña stones; çré-rädhayä—with Çré Rädhä;

adya—now; astu—is; tayä—with Her;

ramaëyä—beautiful.

As a tamäla tree with a vine of golden flowers, as a dark

cloud with a lightning flash, and as a dark mountain with a mine

of nikaña stones, so Lord Hari was with beautiful Çré Rädhä.

Text 45

çré-räsa-raìge jana-varjite pare

reme haré räsa-raseëa rädhayä

våndävane bhåìga-mayüra-küjal-

late caraty eva ratéçvaraù paraù

çré—beautiful; räsa—of the räsa dance; raìge—in

the arena; jana—people; varjite—without;

pare—transcendental; reme—enjoyed; hariù—Lord

Hari; räsa-raseëa—with the nectar of the räsa dance;

rädhayä—with Rädhä; våndävane—in Våndävana;

bhåìga—bees; mayüra—peacocks; küjat—cooing;

late—vine; carati—moves; eva—indeed; rati—of

amorous pastimes; éçvaraù—the master;

paraù—transcendental.

In the beautiful secluded räsa-dance arena Lord Hari enjoyed

the nectar of the räsa dance with Çré Rädhä. Lord Hari, the

transcendental master of amorous pastimes, walked in Våndävana

forest filled with flowering vines and the sounds of peacocks and

bees.

çré-rädhayä kåñëa-hariù parätmä

nanarta govardhana-kandaräsu

mattäliñu prasravanaiù sarobhir

viräjitäsu dyutimal-latäsu

çré-rädhayä—with Çré Rädhä; kåñëa-hariù—Kåñëa Hari;

parätmä—the Supreme Personality of Godhead;

nanarta—danced; govardhana—of Govarhdana Hill;

kandaräsu—in the caves; matta—intoxicated;

aliñu—bees; prasravanaiù—with swiftly moving streams,

rapids, and waterfalls; sarobhiù—with lakes;

viräjitäsu—shining; dyutimat—splendid; latäsu—vines.

The Supreme Lord, Kåñëa-Hari, danced with Çré Rädhä in the

caves of Govardhana Hill, by the lakes and the swiftly moving

streams, rapids, and waterfalls, and among the splendid flowering

vines filled with intoxicated bumblebees.

cakära kåñëo yamunäà sametya

varaà vihäraà våñabhänu-putryä

rädhä-karäl lakña-dalaà sa padmaà

dhävan gåhétvä yamunä-jaleñu

cakära—did; kåñëaù—Lord Kåñëa; yamunäm—to the

Yamunä; sametya—going; varam—excellent;

vihäram—pastime; våñabhänu-putryä—with King Våñabhänu's

daughter; rädhä—of Rädhä; karät—from the hand;

lakña—a hundred thousand; dalam—petals; saù—He;

padmam—a lotus flower; dhävan—running;

gåhétvä—taking; yamunä—of the Yamunä; jaleñu—in the

waters.

When They came to the Yamunä, Kåñëa enjoyed a charming

pastime with King Våñabhänu's daughter. Taking the hundred-

thousand-petal lotus from Rädhä's hand, He suddenly dove into the

Yamunä's waters.

vetraà gåhétvä sahasä hasanté

dehéti vaàçéà vadato hareç ca

jagäda rädhä kamalaà nu dehi

Laughing Rädhä quickly took Lord Hari's flute, stick, and

yellow cloth. When Lord Hari said, "Give back My flute!"

She mocked Him and said, "You give back My lotus!"

tasyai dadau deva-varo 'tha padmaà

rädhä dadau péta-paöaà ca vaàçém

vetraà ca tasmai haraye tayoù punar

babhüva lélä yamunä-taöeñu

tasyai—to Her; dadau—gave; deva-varaù—the Supreme

Personality of Godhead; atha—then; padmam—the

Lord Hari, the master of the demigods, gave Her the lotus,

Rädhä gave Lord Hari His flute, stick, and yellow cloth, and They

continued to enjoy pastimes by the Yamunä's shone.

tataç ca bhäëòéravane priyäyäs

cakära çåìgäram alaà manojïam

paträvaléyävaka-kajjalädyaiù

puñpaiù su-ratnair vraja-gopa-ratnaù

tataù—then; ca—also; bhäëòéravane—in

Bhäëòéravana; priyäyäù—of His beloved;

cakära—did; çåìgäram—decoration; alam—greatly;

manojïam—beautiful; patra—pictures and designs;

avali-many; yävaka—red lac; kajjala—black

kajjala; ädyaiù—beginning with; puñpaiù—with

flowers; su-ratnaiù—with beautiful jewels; vraja—of

Vraja; gopa—of the cowherd people; ratnaù—the jewel.

Then, in Bhäëòéravana forest, with many flowers, beautiful

jewels, and pictures drawn in red yävaka, black kajjala, and many

other colors, He who is the jewel of the Vraja-gopas beautifully

decorated His beloved.

hareç ca çåìgäram alaà prakartuà

samudyatä tatra yadä hi rädhä

tadaiva kåñëas tu babhüva bälo

vihäya kaiçora-vapuù svayaà hi

As Rädhä was about to decorate Him, Lord Kåñëa suddenly

abandoned His teen-age form and again became an infant.

nandena dattaà çiçum eva yädåçaà

bhümau luöhantaà prarudantam äyayau

harià vilokyäçu rurodha rädhikä

tanoñi mäyäà nu kathaà hare mayi

nandena—by Nanda; dattam—given; çiçum—child;

eva—indeed; yädåçam—like which; bhümau—on the

ground; luöhantam—crawling; prarudantam—crying;

äyayau—went; harim—Lord Hari; vilokya—seeing;

He became an infant crawling on the ground and crying, just

as Nanda had given Him before. When She saw Lord Hari in this

way, Çré Rädhikä cried out, "O Lord Hari, why do You show

this illusion to Me?"

itthaà rudantéà sahasä viñaëëäm

äkäça-väg äha tadaiva rädhäm

çocaà nu rädhe iha mä kuru tvaà

manorathas te bhaviyä hi paçcät

ittham—thus; rudantém—weeping; sahasä—at

once; viñaëëäm—despondent; äkäça—from the sky;

väk—a voice; äha—spoke; tadä—then;

As despondent Rädhä wept, a voice from the sky said,

O Rädhä, don't lament. In time Your desire will be

fulfilled."

gatäçu gehe vraja-räja-patnyäù

dattvä ca bälaà kila nanda-patnyä

uväca dattaù pathi te ca bharträ

patnyäù—of the wife of Vraja's king; dattvä—giving;

Hearing this, Rädhä took Lord Hari and quickly went to the

home of Vraja's queen. Giving the child to Nanda's wife, She

said, "Your husband gave Him to Me on the path."

Text 55

uväca rädhäà nåpa-nanda-gehiné

dhanyäsi rädhe våñabhänu-kanyake

tvayä çiçur me parirakñito bhayän

meghävåte vyomni bhayäturo vane

uväca—said; rädhäm—to Rädhä; nåpa-nanda-

gehiné—the wife of King Nanda; dhanyä—fortunate;

asi—You are; rädhe—O Rädhä; våñabhänu-kanyake—O

daughter of Våñabhänu; tvayä—by You; çiçuù—child;

me—my; parirakñitaù—protected; bhayät—from

danger; megha—by clouds; ävåte—covered;

vyomni—when the sky; bhayäturaù—fearful; vane—in the

forest.

King Nanda's wife said to Rädhä, "O Rädhä, O

daughter of King Våñabhänu, You are fortunate. When the sky was

covered with clouds and my child became frightened in the forest,

You protected Him."

Text 56

sampüjitä çläghita-saò-guëä sä

su-nanditä çré-våñabhänu-putré

tadä hy anujïäpya yaçomatéà sä

çanaiù sva-gehaà hi jagäma rädhä

sampüjitä—worshiped; çläghita—praised;

sat—transcendental; guëä—virtues; sä—She; su-

nanditä—very pleased; çré-våñabhänu-putré—Çré Våñabhänu's

daughter; tadä—then; hi—indeed; anuj

24äpya—taking permission; yaçomatém—from Yaçodä;

sä—She; çanaiù—slowly; sva—to Her own;

After She was greatly honored and Her transcendental virtues

praised, Çré Våñabhänu's happy daughter, taking permission from

Mother Yaçodä, slowly returned to Her own home.

itthaà harer gupta-kathä ca varëitä

rädhä-vivähasya su-maìgalävåtä

çrutä ca yair vä paöhitä ca päöhitä

tän päpa-våndä na kadä spåçanti

Sins will never touch they who hear, read silently, or

recite aloud this auspicious and confidential narration of the

wedding of Çré Rädhä.
