Vatsa-vatsapäla-haraëa

Kidnapping of the Calves and Cowherd Boys

Text 1

athänyac chåëu räjendra

çré-kåñëasya mahätmanaù

kaumäre kréòanaà cedaà

O king of kings, please listen as I describe other pastimes

Çré Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, enjoyed in His

kaumara and paugaëòa years.

Text 2

çré-kåñëo 'gha-mukhän måtyo

rakñitvä vatsa-vatsapän

yamunä-pulinaà gatvä

prähedaà harña-vardhanam

çré-kåñëaù—Lord Kåñëa; agha-mukhät—from Agha's

mouth; måtyaù—from death; rakñitvä—saving;

vatsa—the calves; vatsapän—and the calfherd-boys;

yamunä-pulinam—to the shore of the Yamunä; gatvä—going; präha—said; idam—this; harña—joy;

vardhanam—increasing.

After rescuing the calves and gopas from death in Aghäsura's

mouth, Çré Kåñëa went to the Yamunä's shore and spoke the

following delightful words:

ahaù—Oh; ati-ramyam—very beautiful;

pulinam—shore; priyam—favorite; komala—soft;

välukam—sand; çarat—autumn; praphulla—blooming;

padmänäm—of lotuses; parägaiù—with pollen;

paripüritam—filled; väyunä—by the breeze; tri-

vidhäkhyena—named trividha; sugandhena—with the

fragrance; sugandhitam—scented; madhupa—of bees; dhvani—the sound; samyuktam—with; kuïja—forest; druma—trees; latä—vines;

äkulam—filled; atra—here; upaviçya—entering;

gopälä—O gopas; dina—of the day; eka—one;

prahare—a period of three hourse; gate—passed;

bhojanasya—of lunch; api—also; samayam—the time; tasmät—from that; kuruta—do; bhojanam—lunch.

O gopas, let us go to this beautiful and pleasing riverbank

of soft sands, which is flooded with pollen from the lotuses

blossoming in autumn, fragrant with a breeze carrying three

scents, and filled with trees, vines, and the humming of bees,

and, now that three hours have passed and it is time for lunch,

let us take our lunch here.

atra bhojana-yogyä bhür

dåçyate mådu-välukä

vatsakäù salilaà pitvä

te cariñyanti çädvalam

atra—here; bhojana-yogya—suitable for lunch;

bhüù—place; dåçyate—was seen; mådu—soft;

välukä—sands; vatsakäù—the calves; salilam—water; pitvä—drinking; te—they; cariñyanti—will go;

çädvalam—to the new grasses.

I see that this place with soft sands is a very good place

for our lunch. The calves will drink the water here, and then

they will go to the new grasses there.

iti kåñëa-vacaù çrutvä

tathety ähuç ca bälakäù

prakartuà bhojanaà sarve

hy upaviñöäù sarit-taöe

iti—thus; kåñëa—of Kåñëa; vacaù—the words;

çrutvä—hearing; tathä—so be it; iti—thus;

ähuù—said; ca—and; bälakäù—the boys;

prakartum—to do; bhojanam—lunch; sarve—all;

hi—indeed; upaviñöäù—sat down; sarit—of the river; taöe—on the bank.

Hearing Kåñëa's words, the boys said, "So be it."

They all sat down on the riverbank to take lunch.

atha kecid bälakäç ca

yeñäà pärçve na bhojanam

te tu kåñëasya karëänte

jagadur dénayä girä

atha—then; kecit—some; bälakäù—boys;

ca—and; yeñäm—of them; pärçve—on the side;

na—not; bhojanam—lunch; te—they; tu—indeed; kåñëasya—of Kåñëa; karëänte—in the ear;

jagaduù—spoke; dénayä girä—with a whisper.

Some boys, who had not brought lunch, whispered in Kåñëa's

ear:

vayaà tu kià kariñyämo

'smät pärçve na tu bhojanam

nanda-grämaà tu düraà hi

gacchämo vatsakair vayaà

vayam—we; tu—indeed; kim—what;

kariñyämaù—will do; asmät—of us; pärçve—on the

side; na—not; tu—indeed; bhojanam—lunch;

nanda—of Nanda; grämam—the village; tu—indeed;

düram—far away; hi—indeed; gacchämaù—we go;

vatsakaiù—with the calves; vayam—we.

We did not bring any lunch. With the calves we have come

very far from Nanda's village.

Text 10

iti çrutvä hariù präha

mä çokaà kuruta priyäù

ahaà däsyämi sarveñäà

prayatnenäpi bhojanam

tasmän mad-väkya-niratäù

sarve bhavata bälakäù

iti—thus; çrutvä—hearing; hariù—Kåñëa;

präha—said; mä—don't; çokam—lament;

kuruta—do; priyäù—dear friends; aham—I;

däsyämi—will give; sarveñäm—of all;

prayatnena—carefully; api—also; bhojanam—the

lunch; tasmät—therefore; mat—of Me; väkya—on

the words; niratäù—intent; sarve—all;

bhavata—become; bälakäù—O boys;

Hearing this, Kåñëa said: Dear friends, don't lament. I will

carefully give lunch to everyone. All you boys just follow My

words.

iti kåñëasya vacanät

kåñëa-pärçve ca te sthitäù

muktvä çikyäni sarve 'nye

bubhujuù kåñëa-samyutäù

iti—thus; kåñëasya—of Kåñëa; vacanät—from the

words; kåñëa-pärçve—at Kåñëa's side; ca—and;

te—they; sthitäù—situated; muktvä—giving up;

çikyäni—ropes; sarve—all; anye—others;

bubhujuù—ate; kåñëa-samyutäù—in Kåñëa's company.

On Kåñëa's word all the boys assembled around Kåñëa, put

down their gopa-ropes, and ate their lunch in Kåñëa's company.

Text 12

cakära kåñëaù kila räja-maëòaléà

gopäla-bälaiù purataù prapüritaiù

aneka-varëair vasanaiù prakalpitair

madhye sthito péta-paöena bhüñitäù

cakära—made; kåñëaù—Kåñëa; kila—indeed;

räja-maëòalém—a royal circle; gopäla-bälaiù—with gopa

boys; purataù—in the presence;

prapüritaiù—filled; aneka-varëaiù—with many different

kinds; vasanaiù—with garments; prakalpitaiù—made; madhye—in the middle; sthitaù—situated; péta-

paöena—with a yellow garment; bhüñitäù—decorated.

With the gopa boys dressed in garments of many colors, Kåñëa

made a royal circle, with Himself, dressed in yellow, in the

center.

reje tataù so vara-gopa-därakair

yathämareço hy amaraiç ca sarvataù

punar yathämbhoruha-komalair dalair

madhye tu vaideha suvarëa-karëikä

reje—shone; tataù—then; saù—He; vara-gopa-

därakaiù—with the gopa boys; yathä—as; amara—of the

demigods; éçaù—the king; hi—indeed;

amaraiù—with the demigods; ca—and; sarvataù—all; punaù—again; yathä—as; ambhoruha—lotus;

komalaiù—soft; dalaiù—with petals; madhye—in the

middle; tu—indeed; vaideha—O king of Videha;

suvarëa—golden; karëikä—whorl.

O king of Videha, surrounded by the gopa boys as Indra is

surrounded by the demigods or a lotus whorl is surrounded by many

soft petals, Kåñëa shone with great splendor.

kusumair aìkuraiù kecit

pallavaiç ca dalaiù phalaiù

hastair dåçadbhiù çigbhiç ca

jakñus te kåta-bhäjanäù

kusumaiù—with flowers; aìkuraiù—with grass;

kecit—some; pallavaiù—with twigs; ca—and;

dalaiù—with leaves; phalaiù—with fruits; hastaiù—with

hands; dåçadbhiù—with stones; çigbhiù—with rope; ca—and; jakñuù—ate; te—they; kåta—having

made; bhäjanäù—dishes.

Making lunch-trays out of flowers, grass, twigs, leaves,

fruit, rocks, rope, or their hands, the boys ate.

Text 15

tatraiko bälakäù çéghraà

kåñëäya kavalaà dadau

kåñëas tu kavalaà bhuktvä

sarvän paçyann idaà jagau

tatra—there; ekaù—one; bälakäù—boy;

çéghram—quickly; kåñëäya—to Kåñëa; kavalam—a

morsel; dadau—gave; kåñëaù—Kåñëa;

tu—indeed; kavalam—the morsel; bhuktvä—ate;

sarvän—all; paçyann—seeing; idam—this;

jagau—said.

Then one boy suddenly gave a morsel to Kåñëa. Kåñëa ate it,

glanced at everyone, and said:

anyän nidarçayan svädu

nähaà jänämi vai sakhe

tathety uktvä sa bäläç ca

nétvänyän kavalän dadau

anyän—the others; nidarçayan—showing;

svädu—delicious; na—not; aham—I;

jänämi—know; vai—indeed; sakhe—O friend;

tathä—so be it; iti—thus; uktvä—saying;

sa—He; bälaù—the boy; ca—and;

nétvä—bringing; anyän—others; kavalän—morsels;

dadau—gave.

Showing the others, Kåñëa said: Friend, I do not know of

anything more delicious than this.

The boy said: It is so.

Then the boy gave morsels of that food to the others.

Text 17

bhuktvä te kathayäm äsuù

prahasantaù parasparam

punas taträpi subalo

haraye kavalaà dadau

bhuktvä—eating; te—they; kathayäm äsuù—said; prahasantaù—laughing; parasparam—among themselves;

punaù—again; tatra—there; api—also;

subalaù—Subala; haraye—to Kåñëa; kavalam— amorsel; dadau—gave.

Joking and laughing, the boys ate. Then Subala gave a morsel

of food to Kåñëa.

Text 18

kåñëas tu kavalaà kiïcid

bhuktvä tatra jahäsa ha

ye bhukta-kavalä bäläs

te sarve jahasuù sphuöam

kåñëaù—Kåñëa; tu—indeed; kavalam—the morsel; kiïcit—a little bit; bhuktvä—eating;

tatra—there; jahäsa—laughed; ha—Ah!; ye—who; bhukta—eating; kavalaù—the morsel; bäläù—the

boys; te—they; sarve—all; jahasuù—laughed; sphuöam—aloud.

Kåñëa tasted the morsel and laughed. All the boys that

tasted that food laughed aloud.

Text 19

çré-bäla ücuù

yasya mätämahä müòhä

çåëu nanda-kumäraka

na jïänaà bhojane tasya

tasmät svädu na vidyate

çré-bälaù ücuù—the boys said; yasya—of whom;

mätämahä—the grandmother; müòhä—bewildered;

çåëu—listen; nanda—of Nanda; kumäraka—O son;

na—not; jïänam—knowledge; bhojane—in

eating; tasya—of him; tasmät—therefore;

svädu—delicious; na—not; vidyate—is.

The boys said: O son of Nanda, his bewildered grandmother

does not know how to cook. That was not delicious.

Text 20

tato dadau ca kavalaà

çrédämä mädhaväya ca

anyän sarvän bahu-çreñöhaà

jaguù sarve vrajärbhakäù

tataù—then; dadau—gave; ca—and; kavalam—a

morsel; çrédämä—Çrédämä; mädhaväya—to Kåñëa;

ca—and; anyän—the others; sarvän—all; bahu-

çreñöham—the best; jaguù—said; sarve—all;

vraja—of Vraja; arbhakäù—the boys.

Then Çrédämä gave a morsel to Kåñëa and the other boys. All

the boys of Vraja declared, "This is the best."

Text 21

punaù kåñëäya pradadau

kavalaà ca varüthapaù

anyän bäläàs tathä sarvän

kiïcit kiïcit prayatnataù

punaù—again; kåñëäya—to Kåñëa; pradadau—gave; kavalam—a morsel; ca—and; varüthapaù—varüthapa; anyän—to the other; bälän—boys; tathä—then;

sarvän—all; kiïcit—something; kiïcit—something; prayatnataù—carefully.

Then Varüthapa earnestly gave a morsel to Kåñëa and all the

other boys.

Text 22

bhuktvä tu jahasuù sarve

çré-kåñëädyä vrajärbhakäù

çré-bäla ücuù

tädåçaà bhojanaà cäsya

yädåçaà subalasya vai

bhuktvä—eating; tu—indeed; jahasuù—laughed; sarve—all; çré-kåñëädyä—headed by Kåñëa;

vrajärbhakäù—the boys of Vraja; çré-bäläù ücuù—the boys

said; tädåçam—like that; bhojanam—food;

ca—and; asya—of him; yädåçam—like which;

subalasya—of Subala; vai—indeed.

When they ate it, Kåñëa and all the boys of Vraja laughed.

The boys said, "This is like Subala's food.

Text 23

bhuktväty-udvigna-manasaù

sarve vayam ataù kila

evaà påthak påthak sarve

darçayantaù sva-bhojanam

bhuktvä—eating; aty-udvigna-manasaù—very unhappy at

heart; sarve—all; vayam—we; ataù—therefore; kila—indeed; evam—thus; påthak

påthak—individually; sarve—all;

darçayantaù—showing; sva-bhojanam—own lunch.

"by eating this we have all become very unhappy at

heart." In this way each boy showed his lunch to the others.

Text 24

häsayanto hasantaç ca

cakruù kréòäà parasparam

jaöharasya paöe veëuà

vetraà çåìgaà ca kakñake

häsayantaù—making others laugh; hasantaù—laughing; ca—and; cakruù—did; kréòäm—pastimes;

parasparam—together; jaöharasya—of the abdomen;

paöe—in the cloth; veëum—flute; vetram—stick;

çåìgam—horn; ca—and; kakñake—in the hiding place.

Laughing and making each other laugh, the boys enjoyed

pastimes. Tucked into the cloth about His waist His flute, stick,

and horn, . . .

väme päëau ca kavalaà

hy aìguliñu phaläni ca

çirasä mukuöaà bibhrat

skandhe péta-paöaà tathä

väme—in the left; päëau—hand; ca—and;

kavalam—a morsel of food; hi—indeed; aìguliñu—in the

fingers; phaläni—fruits; ca—and; çirasä—by the

head; mukuöam—a crown; bibhrat—holding;

skandhe—on the shoulders; péta-paöam—yellow garments;

tathä—so.

. . . in His left hand a morsel of food, on His fingers pieces

of fruit, on His head a crown, over His shoulder a yellow cloth, . . .

hådaye vana-mäläà ca

kaöau käïcéà tathaiva ca

pädayor nüpurau bibhrac

chrévatsaà kaustubhaà hådi

hådaye—on the chest; vana-mäläm— a forest garland; ca—and; kaöau—on the hips; käïcém—

abelt; tathä—so; eva—indeed; ca—and;

pädayoù—on His feet; nüpurau—anklets;

bibhrat—wearing; çrévatsam—Çrévatsa; kaustubham—and

Kautubha; hådi—om His chest.

. . . on His chest a forest garland, on His hips a belt, on His

feet anklets, on His chest a Kaustubha jewel and Çrévatsa mark, . . .

Text 27

tiñöhan madhye gopa-goñöhyäà

häsayan narmabhiù svakaiù

svarge loke ca miñati

bubhuje yajïa-bhug ghariù

tiñöhan—situated; madhye—in the center; gopa-

goñöhyäm—of the gopas; häsayan—making laugh;

narmabhiù—with jokes; svakaiù—own; svarge—on

Svargaloka; loke—on the other planets; ca—and;

miñati—gazing; bubhuje—enjoyed; yajïa-bhuk—the

enjoyer of sacrifices; hariù—Lord Kåñëa.

. . . staying in the midst of the gopas and making them laugh

with His joking words as the people of Svargaloka and the other

planets gazed with wonder, Lord Kåñëa, the enjoyer of sacrifices,

enjoyed many pastimes.

Text 28

evaà kåñëätma-natheñu

bhuïjaneñv arbhakeñu ca

viviçur gahvare düraà

tåëa-lobhena vatsakäù

evam—thus; kåñëa—Kåñëa; ätma—own;

natheñu—Lord; bhuïjaneñu—eating;

arbhakeñu—among the boys; ca—and; viviçuù—entered; gahvare—the deep forest; düram—far away; tåëa-

lobhena—eager for grass; vatsakäù—the calves.

As the boys, for whom Kåñëa was the Lord of their lives,

ate, the calves, greedy for more grass, went far away, deep in

the forest.

vilokya tän bhaya-trastän

gopän kåñëa uväca ha

yüyaà gacchantu mähaà tu

hy äneñye vatsakän iha

vilokya—seeing; tän—them; bhaya-

trastän—frightened; gopän—teh gopas; kåñëa—Kåñëa; uväca—said; ha—O; yüyam—you;

gacchantugo; mä—don't; aham—I; tu—indeed; hi—indeed; äneñye—will bring; vatsakän—the

calves; iha—here.

Seeing that the gopas were frightened, Kåñëa said to them,

"Don't go. I shall bring the calves here."

Text 30

ity uktvä kåñëa utthäya

gåhitvä kavalaà kare

vicikäya daré-kuïja-

gahvare vatsakän svakän

iti—thus; uktvä—saying; kåñëa—Kåñëa;

utthäya—rising; gåhitvä—taking; kavalam—a morsel of

food; kare—in His hand; vicikäya—to search;

daréthe caves; kuïja-gahvare—and forest groves; vatsakän—the calves; svakän—own.

Saying this, Kåñëa stood up, took a morsel of food in His

hand, and left to search the caves and forests for the calves.

Text 31

tadaiva cämbhoja-bhavaù samägato

vilokya muktià hy agha-räkñasasya ca

dadarça kåñëaà puline yathä-ruci

bhuïjänam annaà vraja-bälakaiù saha

tadä—then; eva—indeed; ca—and; ambhoja-

bhavaù—Brahmä; samägataù—came; vilokya—seeing;

muktim—liberation; hi—indeed; agha-räkñasasya—of

Aghäsura; ca—and; dadarça—saw;

kåñëam—Kåñëa; puline—on the shore; yathä-ruci—as He

pleased; bhuïjänam—eating; annam—lunch; vraja-bälakaiù—the boys of Vraja; saha—with.

Then the demigod Brahmä, who had already seen the liberation

of Aghäsura, came and gazed at Kåñëa happily eating lunch with

the boys on the riverbank.

Text 32

dåñövä ca kåñëaà manasä sa üce

tv ayaà hi gopo na hi deva-devaù

harir yadi syäd bahu-kutsitänne

kathaà rato vä vraja-gopa-bälaiù

dåñövä—seeing; ca—and; kåñëam—Kåñëa;

manasä—in his mind; sa—he; üce—said;

tv—indeed; ayam—He; hi—indeed; gopaù—a gopa; na—not; hi—indeed; deva-devaù—the master of the

demigods; hariù—Lord Hari; yadi—if;

syät—is; bahu—very; kutsita—wretched; anne—in

food; katham—how?; rataù—enjoying; vä—or; vraja-gopa-bälaiù—with Vraja's gopa boys.

As he gazed at Kåñëa, Brahmä said in his mind, "This

must be a gopa. He cannot be Lord Hari, the Personality of

Godhead. Why would Lord Hari enjoy such wretched food with the

gopa boys of Vraja?"

Text 33

ity uktvä mohito brahmä

mäyayä paramätmanaù

drañöuà maïju mahattvaà tu

manaç cakre hy aho nåpa

iti—thus; uktvä—speaking; mohitaù—bewildered; brahmä—Brahmä; mäyayä—by the illusory potency;

paramätmanaù—of the Supreme Personality of Godhead;

drañöum—to see; maïju—beautiful;

mahattvam—glory; tu—indeed; manaù—mind;

cakre—did; hi—indeed; ahaù—Oh; nåpa—king.

After speaking these words, Brahmä became bewildered by the

Lord's illusory potency. O king, he set his heart on seeing the

beautiful glories of the Lord.

Text 34

sarvän vastän ito gopän

nétvä khe 'vasthitaù purä

antardadhe vismito 'jo

dåñöväghäsura-mokñaëam

sarvän—all; vastän—the calves; itaù—from

there; gopän—the gopas; nétvä—taking; khe—in

the sky; avasthitaù—situated; purä—before;

antardadhe—disappeared; vismitaù—surprised;

ajaù—Brahmä; dåñövä—having seen; aghäsura-mokñaëam—the

liberation of Aghäsura.

As he stood in the sky, Brahmä, and who was very surprised

to see Aghäsura's liberation, stole all the calves and boys and

disappeared.
