Rajaka-vayaka-sudämopakhyäna

The Stories of the Washerman, Weaver, and Florist

Text 1

çré-bahuläçva uväca

çré-kåñëa-caritaà puëyaà

mayä tava mukhäc chrutam

punaù çrotuà manaç cädya

tåñito vä jalaà gataù

çré-bahuläçva uväca—Çré Bahuläçva said; çré-kåñëa-

caritam—Çré Kåñëa's pastimes; puëyam—sacred; mayä—by

me; tava—of you; mukhät—from the mouth;

çrutam——heard; punaù—again; çrotum—to hear;

manaù—heart; ca—and; adya—npow;

tåñitaù—thirsty; vä—or; jalam—to water;

gataù—gone.

Çré Bahuläçva said: Although my heart has already heard Lord

Kåñëa's sacred pastimes from your mouth, it thirsts to hear them

again. Although it has already drunk this nectar, it thirsts to

drink it again.

Text 2

kaàsasya janma-karmäëi

tvayoktäni çrutäni me

keçy-ädi-daitya-varyäëäà

pürva-janma-kåtaà çrutam

kaàsasya—of Kaàsa; janma-karmäëi—the birth and

deeds; tvayä—by you; uktäni—spoken;

çrutäni—heard; me—by me; keçy-ädi-daitya-varyäëäm—of

the demons headed by Kesi; pürva-janma-kåtam—done in the

previous birth; çrutam—heard.

I have already heard from you the description of the deeds

of Kaàsa in his previous birth and the deeds of Keçé and other

demons in their previous births.

Text 3

ko 'yaà tu rajakaù pürvaà

avadhéd yaà hariù katham

aho yasya mahaj-jyotiù

kåñëe lénaà babhüva ha

kaù—who?; ayam—he; tu—indeed; rajakaù—the

washerman; pürvam—before; avadhét—killed;

yam—whom; hariù—Kåñëa; katham—why?; ahaù—Oh; yasya—of whom; mahaj-jyotiù—the greqat light;

kåñëe—in Lord Kåñëa; lénam—merged; babhüva—was;

ha—certainly.

Who was the washerman in his previous birth? Why did Lord

Kåñëa kill him? Why did his spiritual effulgence merge in Lord

Kåñëa's body?

Text 4

çré-närada uväca

tretä-yuge tv ayodhyäyäà

räma-räjye videha-räö

caraëaà çåëvatäà kaçcid

rajako hy avadat priyäm

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; tretä-yuge—in Tretä-

yuga; tv—indeed; ayodhyäyäm—in Ayodhyä; räma-

räjye—in Lord Räma's kingdom; videha-räö—O king of

Videha; cäräëäm—of ther king's spies;

çåëvatäm—hearing; kaçcit—someone;

rajakaù—washerman; hi—indeed; avadat—said;

priyäm—to his wife.

Çré Närada said: O king of Videha, in Tretä-yuga, in Lord

Räma's kingdom, in Ayodhyä, as Lord Räma's spies overheard, this

same washerman said to his wife:

nähaà bibharmi tväà duñöäà

uñatéà para-veñma-gäm

stré-lobhé bibhryät sétäà

rämo nähaà bhaje punaù

na—not; aham—I; bibharmi—maintain;

tvam—you; duñöam—wicked; uñatém—at sunrise;

para-veñma-gäm—returning from another's house; stré—after

His wife; lobhé—greedy; bibhryät—may maintain;

sétäm—Sétä; rämaù—Räma; na—not; aham—I;

bhaje—do; punaù—again.

I will not maintain you, a sinner that returns at dawn from

another's house. Rämacandra, who is greedy to enjoy with His

wife, may continue to maintain His Sétä, but I am not like Him.

Text 6

iti lokäd bahu-mukhäd

väkyaà çrutvätha räghavaù

sétäà tatyäja sahasä

vane lokäpavädataù

iti—thus; lokät—from the people; bahu-mukhät—many

mouths; väkyam—the words; çrutvä—hearing;

atha—then; räghavaù—Lord Räma; sétäm—Sétä;

tatyäja—rejected; sahasä—at once; vane—in the

forest; loka—of the people; apavädataù—because of the

criticsm.

Hearing from many mouths that the people were criticizing

Him, Lord Rämacandra at once exiled Sétä to the forest.

Text 7

tasmai daëòaà dätum icchäà

na cakre räghavottamaù

mathuräyäà dväparänte

rajakaù sa babhüva ha

tasmai—to him; daëòam—punishment; dätum—to

give; icchäm—desire; na—not; cakre—did;

räghavottamaù—Lord Räma; mathuräyäm—in Mathurä;

dväparänte—at the end of Dvapara-yuga;

rajakaù—washerman; sa—he; babhüva—became;

ha—indeed.

Lord Rämacandra had no wish to punish him, and in due course

this person became a washerman in Mathurä at the end of Dvas_para-

yuga.

Text 8

ku-väkya-dosa-çänty-arthaà

taà jaghäna hariù svayam

tad api pradadau mokñaà

tasmai çré-karuëä-nidhiù

ku-väkya—of bad words; doña—the fault;

çänti—peace; artham—for the purpose; tam—him;

jaghäna—killed; hariù—Kåñëa; svayam—Himself;

tat—that; api—also; pradadau—gave;

mokñam—liberation; tasmai—to him; çré-karuëä-nidhiù—an

ocean of mercy.

To stop his blasphemy, however, Lord Kåñëa killed him. Then

the Lord, who is an ocean of mercy, gave him liberation.

Text 9

dayäloù kåñëacandrasya

caritraà paramädbhutam

etat te kathitaà räjan

kià bhüyaù çrotum icchasi

dayäloù—merciful; kåñëacandrasya—of Lord Kåñëa;

caritram—the pastimes; paramädbhutam—very wonderful;

etat—this; te—to you; kathitam—spoken; räjan—O

king; kim—what?; bhüyaù—more; çrotum—to

hear; icchasi—you wish.

O king, now I have spoke to you Lord Kåñëacandra's very

wonderful pastimes. What more do you wish to hear?

Text 10

çré-bahuläçva uväca

purä vai väyakaù ko 'pi

nitaräà muni-sattama

yasmai dadau ca särüpyaà

çré-kåñëo bhagavän hariù

çré-bahuläçva uväca—Çré Bahuläçva said;

purä—before; vai—indeed; väyakaù—the weaver;

kaù—who?; api—also; nitaräm—greatly; muni-

sattama—O best of sages; yasmai—to whom;

dadau—gave; ca—and; särüpyam—a form like His;

çré-kåñëaù—Çré Kåñëa; bhagavän—the Supreme Personality of

Godhead; hariù—Kåñëa.

Çré Bahuläçva said: O best of sages, in his previous life

who was the weaver that received from Lord Kåñëa a transcendental

form like His own?

çré-närada uväca

mithilä-nagare pürvaà

väyako hari-bhakti-kåt

çré-rämodväha-samaye

çiradhvaja-nåpäjïayä

räma-lakñmaëa-veñärthaà

väsäàsi racayan kila

laghu-sütraiù parivayan

kuçalo vastra-karmasu

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; mithilä-nagare—in

Mithila City; pürvam—before; väyakaù—a weaver;

hari-bhakti-kåt—a devotee of Lord Kåñëa; çré-rämodväha-

samaye—at the time of Lord Räma's wedding; çiradhvaja-

nåpäjïayä—by the order of King Siradhvaja; räma-

lakñmaëa—for Räma and Lakñmaëa; veñärtham—for garments; väsäàsi—garments; racayan—making; kila—indeed; laghu-sütraiù—with fine threads; parivayan—weaving; kuçalaù—expert; vastra-karmasu—in making garments.

Çré Närada said: In his previous life he was a weaver in

Mithilä City. A great devotee of the Lord and an expert weaver,

on King Çiradhvaja's order he made very fine garments for Räma

and Lakñmaëa to wear on Lord Räma's wedding day.

Text 13

koöi-kandarpa-lävaëyau

sundarau räma-lakñmaëau

tau vékñya väyako räjan

mohito 'bhün mahä-manäù

koöi—millions; kandarpa—of Kämadevas;

lävaëyau—handsome; sundarau—handsome; räma-

lakñmaëau—Räma and Lakñmaëa; tau—Them;

vékñya—seeing; väyakaù—the weaver; räjan—O king; mohitaù—charmed; abhüt; mahä-manäù—noble-hearted.

O king, when he saw Räma and Lakñmaëa, who are more handsome

than millions of Kämadevas, the noble-hearted weaver became

enchanted.

Text 14

ahaà sva-hastair vasträëi

tayor aìgeñu sarvataù

paridhänaà kärayämi

cakre cetthaà manoratham

aham—I; sva-hastaiù—with my own hand;

vasträëi—garments; tayoù—of Them; aìgeñu—on the

limbs; sarvataù—in all respects;

paridhänam—placing; kärayämi—I will cause;

cakre—did; ca—and; ittham—thus; manoratham—the

desire.

In his heart he desired, "I wish with my own hands I

could make garments to place on Their limbs."

Text 15

manasäpi varaà rämo

dadau tasmä açeña-vit

dväparänte bhärate ca

bhaviñyati manorathaù

manasä—with a thought; api—also;

varam—benediction; rämaù—Lord Räma; dadau—gave;

tasmä—to him; açeña-vit—omniscient; dväparänte—at the

ende of Dvapara-yuga; bhärate—ion Bharata-varsa;

ca—and; bhaviñyati—will be; manorathaù—the desire.

In His heart all-knowing Lord Räma blessed him that his

desire would be fulfilled in Bharata-varña at the end of Dväpara-

yuga.

Text 16

çré-rämasya varät so 'yaà

mathuräyäà babhüva ha

tayor veñaà kärayitvä

tat-särüpyaà jagäma ha

çré-rämasya—of Lord Räma; varät—from the blessing; saù—he; ayam—he; mathuräyäm—in Mathurä;

babhüva—became; ha—indeed; tayoù—of Them;

veñam—the garment; kärayitvä—making; tat-särüpyam—a

transcendental form like Theirs; jagäma—attained;

ha—indeed.

By the blessings of Lord Räma he took birth in Mathurä City.

He personally made garments for Kåñëa and Balaräma, and he

attained a transcendental form like Theirs.

Text 17

çré-bahuläçva uväca

sudämnä malinä brahman

kià kåtaà sukåtaà vada

yad-gåhaà jagmatuù säkñäd

räma-kåñëau manoharau

çré-bahuläçva uväca—Çré Bahuläçva said;

sudämnä—Sudama; malinä—the florist; brahman—O

brähmaëa; kim—what?; kåtam—done; sukåtam—pious

deed; vada—please tell; yad-gåham—in whose home; jagmatuù—went; säkñät—directly; räma-kåñëau—Kåñëa

and Balaräma; manoharau—hansome.

Çré Bahuläçva said: O brähmaëa, what pious deeds did the

florist Sudämä perform that handsome Kåñëa and Balaräma

personally came to his home? Please describe that to me.

Text 18

çré-närada uväca

räja-räja-vanaà ramyaà

nämnä caitrarathaà çubham

tasya vai puñpa-baöuko

hemamäléti-näma-bhäk

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; räja-räja-vanam—the

forest of Kuvera; ramyam—beautriful; nämnä——by

name; caitraratham—Caitraratha; çubham—glorious; tasya—of that; vai—indeed; puñpa-baöukaù—a puspa-

batuka; hemamälé—Hemamali; iti—thus; näma-

bhäk—named.

In Kuvera's beautiful Caitraratha gardens there was a

florist named Hemamälé.

Text 19

viñëu-bhakti-rataù çänto

däné sat-saìga-kån mahän

çré-viñëudeva-präpty-arthaà

deva-püjäà cakära ha

viñëu-bhakti-rataù—devoted to Lord Viñëu;

çäntaù—peaceful; däné—generous; sat-saìga-

kån—asscoiating with devotees; mahän—noble; çré-

viñëudeva-präpty-arthaàto attain Lord Viñëu; deva-püjäm—the

worship of the demigods; cakära—did; ha—indeed.

He was peaceful, generous, and devoted to Lord Viñëu. He

associated with saintly persons. He worshiped Lord Çiva to attain

the company of Lord Viñëu.

Text 20

samäù païca-sahasräëi

padmänäà ca çata-trayaà

nityaà nétvä dhürjaöaye

puro dhåtvä nanäma ha

samäù—years; païca-sahasräëi—five

thousdand; padmänäm—of lotus flowers; ca—and;

çata-trayam—three hundred; nityam—always;

nétvä—taking; dhürjaöaye—to Lord Çiva;

puraù—before; dhåtvä—taking; nanäma—bowed;

ha—certainly.

For five thousand years he daily took three hundred lotus

flowers, placed them before Lord Çiva, and bowed down.

Text 21

ekadäti-prasanno 'bhüt

try-abjakaù karuëä-nidhiù

mäläkära mahä-buddhe

varaà brühéty uväca ha

ekadä—one day; ati-prasannaù—very pleased;

abhüt—became; try-abjakaù—Lord çiva; karuëä-nidhiù—an

ocean of mercy; mäläkära—O garland-maker; mahä-

buddhe—intelligent; varam—a blessing; brühi—ask; iti—thus; uväca—said; ha—indeed.

Lord Çiva, who is an ocean of mercy, was very pleased. One

day he said, "Intelligent florist, ask for a boon."

Text 22

hemamälé tadä devaà

namaskåtya kåtäïjaliù

pradakñiëé-kåtya puraù

sthitvä präha natänanaù

hemamälé—Hemamali; tadä—then; devam—to the

Lord; namaskåtya—bowing; kåtäïjaliù—with

folded hands; pradakñiëé-kåtya—circumambulating;

puraù—before; sthitvä—standing; präha—said;

natänanaù—his head bowed.

With folded hands bowing before Lord Çiva, circumambulating

him, and standing before him with bowed head, Hemamälé spoke.

Text 23

çré-hemamäly uväca

paripürëatamaà kåñëaà

kvacin no gåham ägatam

paçyämi dågbhyäà taà säkñät

tvad-vareëa bhaved idam

çré-hemamäly uväca—Çré Hemamali said;

paripürëatamam—the Supreme Personality of Godhead;

kåñëam—Kåñëa; kvacin—somewhere; naù—of us;

gåham—home; ägatam—come; paçyämi—I see;

dågbhyäm—with both eyes; tam—Him; säkñät—directly; tvad-vareëa—by Your blessing; bhavet—may be;

idam—this.

Çré Hemamälé said: By your blessings may I be able to see

with my own eyes the perfect Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord

Kåñëa, enter my home.

Text 24

çré-mahädeva uväca

dväparänte bhärate ca

mathuräyäà mahä-mate

manorathas te sa-phalo

bhaviñyati na saàçayaù

çré-mahädeva uväca—Lord Çuva said; dväparänte—at the

end of Dvbapara-yuga; bhärate—in Bharata-varsa;

ca—and; mathuräyäm—in Mathurä; mahä-mate—O noble-

hearted one; manorathaù—the desire; te—of you;

sa-phalaù—fruitful; bhaviñyati—will be; na—no;

saàçayaù—doubt.

Lord Çiva said: O noble-hearted one, at the end of Dväpara-

yuga, in Bharata-varña, in Mathurä City, your desire will bear

fruit. Of this there is no doubt.

Text 25

çré-närada uväca

maheçvara-vareëäsau

hemamälé mahä-manäù

mäläkäro dväparänte

sudämä sambabhüva ha

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; maheçvara—of Lord

çuva; vareëa—by the blessings; asau—he;

hemamälé—Hemamali; mahä-manäù—noble-hearted;

mäläkäraù—florist; dväparänte—at the end of Dvapara-

yuga; sudämä—Sudama; sambabhüva—became;

ha—indeed.

Çré Närada said: By Lord Çiva's blessings, at the end of

Dväpara-yuga noble-hearted Hemamälé was born as the florist

Sudämä.

Text 26

tasmäd asya gåhaà säkñäj

jagmatü räma-keçavau

çiva-väkyam åtaà kartuà

kià bhüyaù çrotum icchasi

tasmät—because of that; asya—of him; gåham—to the

home; säkñäj—directlky; jagmatü—came; räma-

keçavau—Kåñëa and Balaräma; çiva-väkyam—the words of Lord

Çiva; åtam—true; kartum—to do; kim—what?; bhüyaù—more; çrotum—to hear; icchasi—you wish.

To keep Lord Çiva's promise, Kåñëa and Balaräma entered

Sudämä's home. What more do you wish to hear?
