Kurma dasa, AU: Kurma's Summer Garden

In this world of duality, my garden shimmers in summer haze, while many of my Euro-readers are crunching through snowdrifts.

So be it. What goes up must come down. Our time to shiver will come, soon enough. In the meantime, I tend to my little green brothers and sisters who are living out their herbal lives in pots on my patio.

Here's a brief photographic update.

greek basil 2010:

This is Greek Basil. The leaves are small, and the flavour is subtle and floral. I think this plant will grow very profusely.

radish 2010:

My radish plants, soon to yield their crunchy pink offerings, are this big after only twelve days. Remarkably fast-growing.

2010 rocket:

Nice peppery leaves of rocket. The more I pick, the more they grow. Great with sourdough bread and fresh cream cheese.

2010 rainbow chard:

I regularly cull leaves from my ten pots of rainbow chard. I throw it into whatever I'm cooking to add the required 'greens'.

2010 habaneros:

This is year three of my Habanero chilies. You can see how thick the trunk is. The chilies are inferior in size this year, so I might (speaking quietly here so he doesn't hear me) 'take out' this plant after it's fruiting season is over and send it to plant heaven.

2010 basil:

Lovely large-leaved fragrant basil. My eight plants (four varieties) will easily see me through summer salads, sandwiches and pastas.

2010 lettuce:

Tiny lettuce plants look so fragile and lovable, like all baby plants and animals. This is nature's arrangement so we love them and give them shelter.

ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Today's Darsana

13/12/10
Chota Jaganatha, Baladeva and Subhadra Mayi have got new golden shoes today, so They can walk down the path of Vraja!
Talking about Vrindavana, we wish to share this little excerpt by Raghunatha Dasa Goswami from the Vraja Vilasa Stava:

"Even if I have the opportunity to bathe in the nectarean ocean of pure love of Krsna, and even if I have the pure devotees of the infallible Supreme Personality of Godhead as my associates, I will not consent to live, even for a single moment, in any sacred place other than Vrajabhumi. Even if the residents of Vraja appear to be ordinary, and even if they fill my ears with useless gossip, I pray that I may remain among them, eternally residing here in Vraja".

Here's a slideshow of our sacred little Vrindavana, here in Melbourne.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: CREATIVITY IN KRSNA CONSCIOUSNESS

An Artist Speaks

Navayauvana: What is your background as an artist?

Jayarama: I can say that my painting started off with music, because as a child I studied music more than I studied art. I spent most of my time practicing and playing the piano. When I reached sixteen or seventeen I started to become more interested in visual arts, and I began drawing quite a bit.

Then I went to study drawing at Washington University, In St. Louis, at the school of fine arts there. I studied under one teacher for two years, and in my third year I was majoring in painting.

A lot of problems came up, because my idea of painting and the idea of the teachers was entirely different. They were into very contemporary trends, and I guess they thought of me as a reactionary, because all my paintings were full of detail and mostly visionary. They thought my work was too insubstantial; it wasn't outrageous enough.

So I spent my whole third year in college fighting it out with these teachers. Finally I just left, about six weeks before the end of that year, and I went to Europe to see the museums and all the great paintings that I'd been studying for years.

Then I came back and kept painting. I went to live in an isolated little spot in Arkansas for awhile so that I could paint in a more peaceful atmosphere. Then I went back to St. Louis, where I started finding out about Krsna consciousness - going to the temple now and then, and learning about Krsna. I was always looking for beauty in art, truth in art, and I always appreciated art that pointed in a high direction.

I was looking for beautiful form, and when I started to hear about Krsna, His form was something I naturally became interested in. So I read the Bhagavad-gita As It Is and got to know a few devotees. It was all very attractive. It made a lot of sense to me, and I turned toward Krsna consciousness for inspiration in my art work.

Navayauvana: Previous to this, were there any influences in your art work?

Jayarama: I've always been influenced by Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo's work -- the more I study it, the more real it become to me. His landscapes are so endlessly deep and mysterious. They're full of a vital, creative energy that's always pulling upwards. Also, Fra Angelico, as far as devotional painters go -- to me he's the greatest.

He said that before he would even pick up a paintbrush he'd pray, and as he was painting the face of Christ he would be crying. For him Christ was a very real experience. That devotion he felt for Christ can be seen in his compositions.

Everything he painted was glowing with devotion and simplicity. It's the sort of simplicity that reflects higher truths, right in the line and right in the color. Also, I've always like Indian sculpture, because it's the finest example of perfect form and ideal beauty. The, too, there's always the symmetry of a leaf, or the color of sky.... All these things influence me as an artist.

Navayauvana: Now that you're painting for Krsna, do you find any difference in your role as an artist?

Jayarama: I've always felt a kind of need to glorify God in my work, because painting is something He's given me. And now I have that desire even more. I'm mostly interested in trying to show how beautiful Krsna is. He's great and H's beautiful; He's kind and He's compassionate.

I just want to try to remind people that God is actually a very beautiful and kind Person. Whether it takes me ten years to do a painting or ten days, I have to glorify Krsna the best I can. Anything less than that I consider very unsatisfactory and very frustrating.

Navayauvana: Did you ever want to become a great artist?

Jayarama: I don't care if I'm a ‘great artist' or not. I just want my art to point toward the mysteries and the beauties of the truth, that's all. Whether it comes into the context of being great or famous, that doesn't matter so much If I feel that it evokes the desire to understand something higher and to appreciate a higher beauty, that's what I care about -- because that's the experience I have with it, and that's the experience I would like to share. And if it becomes ‘great,' fine; if it doesn't, fine. That doesn't matter, as long as I can somehow point toward that higher direction.

Navayauvana: How has chanting Hare Krsna affected your work?

Jayarama: Well, I can just follow my own progression. My conception of form, my standards of beauty - they've all become so much higher since I've taken chanting seriously.

Navayauvana: Specifically, I'd like to know how the chanting affects your creativity.

Jayarama: I guess a lot of people think that it limits individuality and kind of groups everyone together, right? Because everyone's chanting in the same place, doing the same thing, externally it seems very uninteresting. But, internally, I know if you take it seriously... I mean, I don't take chanting nearly as seriously as I should... but when I do take it seriously, there's nothing but very positive results.

Chanting is a link with God, and we're eternally individual parts of God - whole, complete parts. When you chant, your completeness, your individuality, becomes more manifest. And as your individual personality begins to come out, your higher perceptions begin to open up. It's a spiritual vibration, so naturally spiritual vibrations are going to open up all those higher channels of consciousness.

And chanting can also manifest itself in form. Not that I've experienced this directly myself, but indirectly I've experienced it within my work - a spiritual sense of beauty, color, and form. Chanting opens a new spiritual dimension.

Navayauvana: In other words, rather than restricting your creativity, chanting does just the opposite.

Jayarama: Oh, definitely. Anyone who can think that chanting is restricting creativity doesn't know anything about chanting.

Navayauvana: So overall, creativity seems to have an important role in your devotional life.

Jayarama: I think creativity should be there in all aspects of life. Why be uncreative? Krsna is the most creative person, and we all come from Him. So why not be creative? We can create beautiful things and give them back to Krsna.

Navayauvana: In what ways do you think Krsna conscious art is unique?

Jayarama: It's unique in that it's presenting a clear understanding of what truth is, a clear understanding of the original person, Krsna - what He looks like, what He does, how He relates to people... When we talk about truth, until we talk about Krsna we're missing so much.

Even if Krsna is not mentioned, there are still high forms of art. But art remains incomplete until it contains an awareness of Krsna. Then art can express the highest aspects of truth.

Navayauvana: Do you have any personal goals as an artist?

Jayarama: Oh, yes. I just want to become more honest and sincere in my work. Hopefully, that will give some pleasure to my spiritual master and anyone else who sees it.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 160

4:25 A.M.

Excerpts from Sri Harinama Cintamani (spoken by Haridasa Thakura to Lord Caitanya and written by Bhaktivinoda Thakura):

Considering the demigods independent of Krishna:

Srila Haridas Thakura continued speaking with folded hands: “O Lord of the Universe, now I pray that You may listen to my explanation of the second offense to the holy name.”

Equating the Lord with demigods is ignorance:

“People who are ignorant of the vishnu-tattva principle of the Supreme Godhead try to equate the Supreme Lord with the demigods. Lord Siva and all the other demigods are the order-carriers of the Supreme Lord Visnu. Mayavadis say that impersonal Brahman is formless, whereas Siva, Brahma and Vishnu, the predominating deities of the three material modes (ignorance, passion and goodness, respectively) have forms.  The scriptures unequivocally declare that Lord Brahma creates the material world and Lord Siva destroys it; but Lord Narayana or Vishnu, the maintainer is the eternal worshipable Lord. Whoever worships other demigods and disregards Vasudeva, the Supreme Lord Narayana, rots eternally in the hell of material existence.
” . . . Due to the advent of Kali-yuga and the contamination of impersonalism, people have become polytheists and have disregarded the supreme position of Lord Vishnu. Individual demigods can offer only limited benefits, while the Supreme Lord Vishnu alone can offer all benedictions. He is the maintainer of everyone. If only these greedy materialists would realize the advantage of worshiping Lord Vishnu, they would abandon  all demigod worship.”
I had a good night’s sleep and woke up at 2:30 A.M. when Narayana came in. I chanted my rounds but could not maintain a rapid pace. I had chanted only about thirteen rounds by 4:30 A.M. I will have to find good time to be alert and chant the balance of the holy names later.

To equate the names of the
demigods with the holy names of
Vishnu is a great offense. The
demigods are servants of the Supreme
and chanting their names
cannot bring real benefit.
Praying the names of Siva
and Brahma and the others
can bring no good.
Lord Vishnu’s name alone
brings freedom from the
transmigration in material species.
To abide with Lord Vishnu
is the only good.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Prabhupada Meditations

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Faithful Meditation

“When Krishna appeared on the battlefield of Kuruksetra, He was about ninety-nine years old, Prabhupada said. By that time in His life, Krishna had married 16,108 wives. Each of His wives had ten children by the Lord, and each of those children had married and had their own children as well. So Krishna was a great-grandfather with a family numbering in the millions, and yet He looked like a beautiful youth of no more than sixteen or twenty years old. Whenever I hear these ‘fantastic’ details of Krishna’s life, I put myself into the position of an innocent person who never heard of Krishna before. ‘What will they think?’ And then I remember how I first thought when I heard of Krishna and His wives and gopis.

“How did Srila Prabhupada convince us? He did it on the basis of perfect Vedic authority. He also gave the evidence of powerful scholars and sages who accept everything that Krishna says and does. Prabhupada explained: Since Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, nothing is impossible for Him. Why be astounded that He had 16,000 wives, since He lives in the hearts of all the innumerable living entities?

“I have become faithful in accepting the way that Prabhupada thinks about Krishna. When I hear that Krishna married 16,000 wives, I accept it calmly because I accept Srila Prabhupada. I can empathize with the cynics, but I reject their reductionist explanation of Krishna consciousness. I can defend myself against the atheists, and yet I admit to this simple faith: I accept Krishna as God because Prabhupada said He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

“ . . . Prabhupada criticized the speculations of an imperfect philosopher, but he encouraged us to think, meditate, worship. It is not dogmatic. We are not afraid to look and think. But for subjects that are beyond the human jurisdiction, we take guidance from the Lord and His pure devotee.

“When I meditate on Srila Prabhupada or Sri Krishna, it is they who are meditating within me, just as when you pray it is Krishna and the spiritual master who are praying with you. This is faithful meditation. And when the devotee becomes confused or doubtful, he places his inquiry before the Lord: ‘This is my doubt, O Krishna, and but for Yourself, I have found no one who can answer it.’”

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Silent Japa

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

He said, “You start right off
with Krishna” while he approaches
Him after a few lines. Krishna
is where I want to go, so I start
with His names as soon as possible.

Speak of His glories, His feet,
my feelings for Him. Is there
supposed to be a prelude, a buildup?
He’s here. But I’m crying to
Him as from a distance.

Imagine a small boy in a coma.
You whisper “Krishna”
He opens His eyes.
I’m like that boy, waiting for you to say
your names to awaken me.
You pass by like a silent
fish, I don’t hear Your
name

because I chant silently.
But I see the elegant schools
of fish go by colored yellow
and silver and red.

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna
keep my eyes open so I can hear and shut out
other sounds, the footfalls below.

It takes up your attention. You’ll get strong,
keeping the eyes open
and hearing the holy names.

Work hard
pray with ardor.
It’s all silent, but you’re here.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Free Write

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

I turned at random to Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 3, Chapter 25, text 29:

“The mystic yoga system, as You have explained, aims at the Supreme Personality of Godhead and is meant for completely ending material existence. Please tell me the nature of that yoga system. How many ways are there by which one can understand in truth that sublime yoga?”

There are different kinds of mystic yoga systems aiming for different phases of the Absolute Truth. The jñāna-yoga system aims at the impersonal Brahman effulgence, and the haṭha-yoga system aims at the localized personal aspect, the Paramātmā feature of the Absolute Truth is localized, whereas bhakti-yoga, or devotional service, which is executed in nine different ways, headed by hearing and chanting, aims at complete realization of the Supreme Lord. There are different methods of self-realization. But here Devahūti refers to the bhakti-yoga system, which has already been primarily explained by the Lord. The different parts of the bhakti-yoga system are hearing, chanting, remembering, offering prayers, worshiping the Lord in the temple, accepting service to Him, carrying out His orders, making friendship with Him and ultimately surrendering everything to the service of the Lord.

In about twenty-five minutes I’ll go on the air with my video broadcast. I’ll be reading poems about Prabhupada and the devotees in Mayapur. I’m a little nervous, but not much. I improvise answers to questions I have already written out, and some new questions may arrive in while I’m broadcasting. I go for about forty minutes and then take the final questions. I’ll tell them where I got the title for the volume, “Let There Be a Temple.” It comes from a text and purport of Srimad-Bhagavatam. It describes Lord Vishnu smiling with a willingness to fulfill the desires of His devotees. The purport says, “There was once there was a deserted field in Ramana-reti in Vrndavana, and a devotee desired, ‘Let there be a temple,’ and now the beautiful Krishna-Balarama mandira has manifested. The collecting party for the temple amassed the money by questionable means but with the right intent. The architect, Surabhi, was frequently criticized by Prabhupada. When the job was finally done Prabhupada said, “Everyone says what a wonderful job Surabhi has done. But I am constantly chastising him. Because that is my job, I am his spiritual master.” Start off with the history of Mayapur. Prabhupada demanded that Tamala Krishna Maharaja stop delaying and build something. So they ordered the workers to start a crude brick construction, and the building was underway.

The ISKCON GBC is a boat that has been rocking through rough waters for years. It has suffered disrepute, especially during about nine years after Srila Prabhupada’s disappearance. Much reform has been done since then. The boat is the system of management that Prabhupada has given us to manage his ISKCON. It is his legacy. Anyone who directly attacks the boat or tries to destroy it is working against Prabhupada’s desires. Loyal dissent is always valid but not outright attacks against the legitimacy of the GBC. I try to keep my journal free of controversy, but I also want to be open about my loyalty to ISKCON and its GBC. I daily make it clear that I am a Prabhupada man, and to my way of thinking that makes me an ISKCON man.

And so we are going to the Hawthorne School’s production of Handel’s Messiah. The lead singer is a professional opera singer. The supporting cast is amateur schoolchildren. Kaulini and Subhadra are among the choir-singers. Saci said that Kaulini didn’t stand up straight but was slouching while she sang last night. Maybe she’ll do better today. When Laksmana heard the concert was an hour long, he said, “Oh, no!” (He had to go, otherwise he would have had to stay home alone.) He was sitting on Saci’s lap. Saci said, “Laksmana and I are not very cultural.” They are more interested in hearing whether ace baseball pitcher Cliff Lee decides to sign a contract with either the New York Yankees or the Texas Rangers.

The Messiah was enjoyable. None of the men were deep baritones, so the line, “O Death, where is thy sting?” lacked a little depth, a defiance. But the orchestra and conductor and the solo singers were good. The church was so crowded it was standing-room only, but Keli-lalita saved a seat for me. She said she had to “hold off the masses” to save it. I’m quite familiar with the Messiah, and so recognized the favorite parts. They ended with the Hallelujah choruses and left off the parts that come after that. There was a lovely stained-glass window of Christ when he was with his arms open and unwounded in peace. The stained-glass window was behind the singers. Hare Krishnas attended in the crowd with their tilaka, at least me.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: “Cartoon Physics, part 1″ by Nick Flynn

Children under, say, ten, shouldn’t know
that the universe is ever-expanding,
inexorably pushing into the vacuum, galaxies

swallowed by galaxies, whole

solar systems collapsing, all of it
acted out in silence. At ten we are still learning

the rules of cartoon animation,

that if a man draws a door on a rock
only he can pass through it.
Anyone else who tries

will crash into the rock. Ten-year-olds
should stick with burning houses, car wrecks,
ships going down—earthbound, tangible

disasters, arenas

where they can be heroes. You can run
back into a burning house, sinking ships

have lifeboats, the trucks will come
with their ladders, if you jump

you will be saved. A child

places her hand on the roof of a schoolbus,
& drives across a city of sand. She knows

the exact spot it will skid, at which point
the bridge will give, who will swim to safety
& who will be pulled under by sharks. She will learn

that if a man runs off the edge of a cliff
he will not fall

until he notices his mistake.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Harinam Sankirtan ki Jaya!

"Oh, for that day when the fortunate English, French, Russian, German and American people will take up banners, mrdangas, and kartals and raise kirtana through their streets and towns."

~ Srila Bhaktivinode Thakura ~ 1885
As written in Sajjana-Tosani

Srila Bhaktivinode Thakura did not write Polish but of course he meant people of every caste, creed and nationality and Srila Prabhupada has fulfilled his prediction.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's Harinam Sankirtan ki Jaya!

H.H. Bhaktimarg Swami: Friday, December 10th, 2010

We are all some kind of Hindu.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

By the mercy of Krsna I covered 7 kilometers on foot before embarking on an Air Canada flight to Halifax. To greet me at the airport was a young family who moved here from Montreal. Manu dasa, Satarupa dasi and their 4 year old son Nikunja Bihari established themselves here for Manu's masters degree in the fine art jewelry department at NSCAD University. We stopped at a pharmacy to pick up a few items for the evening gathering of chanters.

I am not a shopper so I chose to not stay in the line-up for purchasing. Two women behind Manu noticed he and I had been talking.

"Excuse me, but could you explain the orange (referring to the robes)?" Asked one of the ladies.
"Well he is a monk" replied Manu.
"Is it like Hindu?"
"It is the origins of Hindu, we are devotees of Krsna." Manu continued.
"I thought so. I took a religion course. That is how I know."

God bless those religion courses taken by the public. Although peripheral by nature these educational classes have done more good to inform people of alternative approaches to the Absolute. Fifty years ago you might believe that Christianity was the only thing going on in North America. In reality Christian doctrine only arrived from France in the early 17th century with the zealousness of the Jesuits. Before that all of the Americas were more Hindu than anything else. There was a firm belief in the elemental powers that were often personified. The world was for everyone to share. Rivers were the veins of God. Trees were the hairs on his body. God as a spirit and God as a form, known as Manitou.

You study the African continent with its culture, Australia, early Europe, just about everywhere, universal concepts were shared across the board. Practically the whole world thought "Hindu" without saying the word.

At the home of Manu and Satarupa a small gathering came to honour "kirtan" chanting which is an offering of sound to the Supreme and all that is within, the Gods, Goddesses, elements, time and nature.

Japa Group: Present By The Vibration

Hare Krsna dear devotees, I hope your chanting has been focused and you have been able to chant good rounds. Here in Brazil is very hot, yesterday was 31 degrees and now there is a storm coming.

Every single day of chanting makes us more aware of our relationship with Krsna - we think He is the supreme and we are His servants....our natural position as eternal servants shines more and more, and the holy names take control of our mind and we surrender to the Lord through chanting.
All kinds of obstacles are vanquished when we make efforts to improve chanting. The Lord and His devotees help us to achieve our spiritual goals and we realize we are on the right path back home, back to Godhead.
We will always notice we are improving if we have this desire to serve devotees and offer the best to the Lord and not to ourselves.
Reading a lecture by Srila Prabhupada he mentions we should always associate with the Lord by His vibration, this means when we hear the sastras, and when we chant He is present in the sound, by doing that we will never be far, the Lord will always be with us:

So next time you associate with the Lord give Him your full attention and remember this is your time with Him, dedicate to it and make Him a feast with your love.

your servant,

Aruna devi
