H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Monday 28 February 2011--Know God Only to the Extent You Love God--and--What Does Your Name Mean?

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(tm) Monday 28 February 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Know God Only to the Extent You Love God Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram--Austin, Texas USA God cann0t be understood by mental speculation. The most you can understand by mental speculation is what God is not. If you actually want to understand what is God positively, this is only possible when He reveals Himself to you. And this He will only do to the extent that you awaken your dormant love for Him. That supreme munificent person gives you all facility to awaken our love for Him. Now it is up to you to take full advantage of His unlimited mercy. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: What Does Your Name Mean? What does your name Sankarshan Das Adhikari translate to in English? Jurgen Answer: Supreme Attractor's Empowered Servant Sankarshan Das Adhikari means the empowered servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the attractor of all living entities. On 12 August 1971, while in London, England Srila Prabhupada wrote me a letter accepting me as his disciple and giving me the name Sankarshan Das. The title adhikari, which means one who is empowered, is a suffix which he gave to all his initiated disciples who were married men. It is easy enough to be friendly to one’s friends. But to befriend the one who regards himself as your enemy is the quintessence of true religion. The other is mere business.

Japa Group: It Will Come Out New And Fresh

In the material world, if one engages in chanting a material name, he will feel tired after chanting a few times. However, one can chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra all day and night and never feel tired. As chanting is increased, it will come out new and fresh.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: The demon test

One test is sufficient. If one is not devotee, if one is not Krsna conscious, he's a demon, has finished our conclusion. We simply ask whether you are Krsna conscious, whether you know Krsna. If he says, "No, I don't know..." I think our Syamasundara's daughter is... She used to preach. She used to go to any elderly person when she was four years old. "Do you know Krsna?" she said. So he says, "No, I don't know." "Oh, the Supreme Personality of Godhead." This is preaching. Finish, preaching. A child can preach. A child can understand, "Do you know God?" "No." "You are a demon." (laughter) Finished. Where is the difficulty? As soon as you say "I do not know God," you are a demon. Bas. First-class demon. "I am scientist." "You are rascal." "No, I have studied, I have got my degrees." "Mayayapahrta-jnana. (laughter) Rascal, you have studied so long, simply waste of time. Your real knowledge is taken away because you do not know God." That is described. We have got very simple test in Krsna consciousness movement how to distinguish between an intelligent man a rascal. As soon as we understand that he's not Krsna conscious, he's a rascal. Bas. There is no need of testing. Even though he's M.A., Ph.D, D.H.C. and so on, so on, still we shall call him a rascal. This is open challenge; it is not secret. How? Canakya Pandita has said, tyaja durjana-samsargam vidyaya 'pi alankrto san. He very nicely says that rascals and fools, must give up their company. Tyaja durjana-samsargam. "No, I have got many friends, they are university educated." But he says, vidyayalankrto 'pi san. Even they are with degrees of M.A. Ph.D., tyaja durjana samsargam vidyayalankrto 'pi san. Even he is educated, so-called educated, he's not educated. Anyone who does not know God, he's not educated, he's a rascal. This is our conclusion. Not our conclusions, this is sastra's conclusion.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Animal Slaughter Equals Social Unrest. The U.N. And U.S. Fed Chair, Bernake, Back It Up

Picture
In recent weeks you have probably noticed more social unrest and rioting around the world. This is being directly caused by increased slaughter of animals. The most influential and recognized economist in the world, U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke recognized this issue this month and so does the United Nation.

I watched the news clip live a few weeks ago as Ben Bernanke talked about the co-relation of eating beef and rising food prices and it drove me to find the quote from Reuters and write this article.

Some excerpts:

The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation Food Price Index on Thursday touched its highest level since records began in 1990 as rising food prices showed no sign of relenting, prompting concerns of social unrest.

He (Bernanke) said higher food prices were stoked by increasing consumer demand in emerging economies for such things as meat.

As people’s diets are becoming more sophisticated and as they eat more beef and less grains and so on, the demand for food and energy rise and that’s the primary long-term factor affecting the real price of commodity and food,” Bernanke said.
—end—

Bernanke says their diets are becoming more “sophisticated” but in reality “barbarian” is more apt of a term. Now it does not take a genius economist to figure out how to resolve this social unrest and looming crisis for inflation and food prices. It will simply take a return to a natural human diet of vegetarian food.

To explain the crisis some simple stats comparing the production of beef to wheat. It takes 18 times more fossil fuel per calorie to produce beef compared to wheat. It takes 15 times the land to produce beef. It takes a whopping 200 times the water to produce a pound of beef compared to wheat. The ratios are similarly disproportionate for all major categories of grains. This animals are bred by meat producers and fattened up by giving them about 16 pounds of grain for every pound of beef produced.

All of the above stats do not take into account the inhumane conditions and countless suffering animals are put through just to feed a barbarian diet. Of course, the serious karmic reactions of animal killing is on top of all of these basic arguments.

As Srila Prabhupada said:

“We simply request, Don’t kill. Don’t maintain slaughterhouses. That is very sinful. It brings down very severe karmic reactions upon society. Stop these slaughterhouses”.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Toronto 24 hour Kirtan Ecstasy along with Prabhupada Book Distribution Bliss

Last weekend, Toronto’s west end was the venue for an ecstatic 24 hours of non-stop kirtan of the maha mantra. A group of local youth organized a weekend which saw kirtan “stars” like the Mayapuris, Bada Hari das, Vrndavan das, wonder kid Ayush, Hari Bhakti Dey, Gaura Mani dasi and Param Prabhu, Amala Kirtan das, our very own Ajamil das and many others bring the holy names to Toronto. The kirtan was estatic and although we were tempted to relax and enjoy the kirtan, we had the opportunity to distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books throughout the event and that was absolutely blissful.

Our target was to do 24 hours of book distribution and at least 108 books. We did end up closing the book table overnight but we kept the table going even after the official 24 hour kirtan wrapped up and ended up doing over 20 hours of book distribution and with Srila Prabhupada’s mercy we did more than double our book target.

Beyond the numbers, the book table ended up being more of a preaching centre. There were many families attracted by the holy name and did not realize that we had an ISKCON centre in Brampton. [In fact the ISKCON Brampton centre already had new families visit on the Sunday of the same weekend]. There were the youth that wanted to connect with other youth and volunteer and ISKCON Toronto provides that fit. There were the young western kirtan/yoga enthusiasts and Urban Edge Yoga can provide them with the intimate learning environment that they need.

Kirtan provides the attraction and books “gel” that interest and together can spark the fire of bhakti.

There is more book distribution nectar...but you will need to wait for another post. But in the mean time here are a few pictures. Note Srila Prabhupada smiling and presiding over the book table!

Jaya Srila Prabhupada! Param Vijayate Sri Krishna Sankirtanam!

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Video Testimonial : Non-stick Properties of Cast Iron Skillet

Often I get email inquiries about what kind of non-stick cookware I use. I don’t use any of the popular coated brands like Calphalon or Anolon. I am freaked out by anything sounding remotely similar to Teflon. That stuff is carcinogenic when heated and I don’t want to risk flakes of coating getting into my food. Basically, I avoid non-stick cookware for the same reason I avoid nail polish. Totally unnecessary.

But that doesn’t mean I eat my pan fried swimming in oil. By properly seasoning a cast iron skillet, you get the non-stick results without compromising your health. Plus, your food will pick up a little extra iron–always a good thing for vegetarians and women of child-bearing intent–and you don’t have to use icky plastic spoons and spatulas.

Below is a video I shot last night of a slightly busy me using my skillet. It is a video testimonial. Watch it and witness the amazing non-stick qualities of cast iron on difficult to fry dry tofu. And remember the key to cast iron success. Use a well seasoned skillet and preheat your pan 3-5 minutes on the highest heat.

Vande

Mayapura, India

I had expressed to the room of 75+ people that I have certain passions. As facilitator of a Creative Arts Initiative I spoke daringly ( you see, speaking to peers in volume is a little intimidating for me). I mentioned that I have passions apart from walking and one of them is the arts. I've been called different names for this reason. Put "Walking Monk" aside. There's "Dancing Monk", "Singing Monk", and "Drama Swami."

I addressed the group. "We have a great team for the initiative. And here's our vision statement.

"To inspire, nurture and network artistic talent, thereby creating a fraternal community spirit for artists, thus attracting the public and patrons of the arts through quality presentations. These presentations will serve to bring to life the cultural and spiritual values of the Vedic teachings as delivered by Srila Prabhupada."

This vision statement appeared to get a positive response from the group. They also reacted well to our name which is "VANDE" meaning "Vaishnava Arts for a New Devotional Era."

The presentation that was made to introduce to the body of senior men and women at this year's AGM was made on the previous day. It kick-started all other presenters. I contemplated on the positive reaction while walking the rural lane behind our temple. It was soothing contemplation. Now our group "Vande" need only act on the initiative.

Proposing to do something is one thing. Acting on it is another.

Gopal from L.A.

Mayapura, India

His first words were, "Come in!"

I had rung his door bell in anticipation for a trek to see the elephants. His voice was deep and grave. Being a very effective facilitator yet very busy, Gopal Bhatta expressed to me on the previous day that he hadn't had the chance to get out of the building. Has been immersed in meetings. So I suggested to take a break.

"I'll take you to see the elephants." He agreed. Along with two monks (brahmacaris) Gopal and I took to the path when fog lifted and the sun poked into the sky.

Whether the brief walk opened up chakras for Gopal and cleansed cobwebs to get him out of his congested feeling, whether the few minutes observing the two elephants' bonding inspired him or not, I personally felt honored to be in the presence of such an empowered soul.

It was certain words at the end of the day that were delivered to the entire body of AGM members that were inspiring. He stressed fair points to implement the mission for improving the spiritual quality of life:
1) Be result - oriented
2) Be risk - oriented
3) Exercise co - operation
4) Enjoy your service/work

An additional remark he made in regard to the status-quo is to "Make a new normal."

Pilgrims have come to Mayapura for a purification through the techniques of chanting and hearing. In addition to this, encouraging words come our way from a person who is highly analytical in his sincere effort to improve and heal an ailing world.

Thank you, Gopal.

I Fudged

Mayapura, India

I misjudged something today. I saw a fellow, a devotee in dhoti, whiz by in his scooter. He parked not far from where I had been pacing on foot when I questioned him.

"Can't you walk?" I asked. Disgusted with these motorized conveyances I just couldn't contain my attitude.

Defensively he spoke, "I actually do, Maharaja." I didn't wait to here an explanation on why this sacred campus called Mayapura is taxed by just another noisy machine that's dangerous, a pollutant and the cause of much more grief. Perhaps it was a rare journey for the bikes or maybe he was running a very important errand.

In any event I went about my business and made some attempt towards a mild apology. When he said "I actually do," without sarcasm I respected the man saying in assurance, "I'm sure you do," hoping that still the messages of cutting down on traffic would be nice. It was our guru's vision at one time that residents in Mayapura would either walk or travel via canals on boats. I don't believe he cared for all the high tech madness for travel. There was talk of an airport; if I recall that was his wish, however, some areas of quiet and safety should have to be honored. I'm confident it was his vision.

It was and is a bit annoying to see the increase of scooters and such.

My mind calmed to receive a new release in the way of books by Torchlight Publishing.

Mukunda Goswami's "Miracle on Second Avenue" details the Hare Krishna arrival in New York, San Francisco and London 1966-96. As one of the earliest of the stray hippie genre of people to join, the author really pulls you in to those magical days of the 60's, the flower power, the days of wonder and change.

The read is great. I really recommend the book. It's candid and Mukunda Goswami is an admirable monk who speaks about his pre-monk adventures as a devotee.

Dandavats.com: Ghee Lamps in a Bag and the Lord in My Hands

By Indradyumna Swami

"Out of His causeless mercy, the Supreme Personality of Godhead presents Himself before us so that we can see Him. Since we have no transcendental vision, we cannot see the spiritual sac-cid-ananda-vigraha ... We can only see material things like stone and wood, and therefore He accepts a form of stone and wood and thus accepts our service in the temple..."

New Vrindavan, USA: Shiva Ratri 2011

Shiva Ratri is on 3rd March 2011. Shiva (Lord Shiva) and ratri (night), so Shivaratri means the night of Lord Shiva. Every lunar month on the 13th or 14th day of the dark half of the moon phase there is a Shivaratri but in the Vedic month of Phalgun (February-March) there is a Maha Shivaratri. This year it falls on the 16th or 17th February depending where you are on the planet. The ceremony takes place mainly at night. This festival observed in the honour of Lord Shiva, who was married to Parvati (Mother Durga/Mother Gauri) on this day.

Some dvevotees observe a strict fast on this day. Some really strict devotees perform a nirjal fast i.e. they do not even have a sip of water. They keep virgil the entire night. The Shiva lingam is worshipped throughout the night by washing it every three hours with milk, yogurt, ghee, honey and so forth, whilst chanting of the mantra “Om namah shivaya”, continues. Offering of bael leaves are made to the Lingam. Bael leaves are very sacred (as Tulsi to Lord Vishnu and dhar to Mother Durga are very pleasing to Them) and Lord Shiva becomes pleased with that offering. Many different hymns glorifying Lord Shiva are sung with intense fervour and devotion. Aspirants perform japa of the Panchakshara mantra “ Om namah Shivaya” (At the end of this article there is a very detail explanation of each syllable of this mantra.)

He who utters the names of Lord Shiva during Shivaratri with perfect devotion and concentration is freed from all sins that he/she have committed. He/she reaches the abode of Lord Shiva and resides very happily there.

NOTE: the Vaishnava/ aspiring Vaishnava however, worships Lord Shiva on this day in order to receive His blessings to become a better devotee of Lord Krishna (Vishnu) and not to attain residence in the abode of Shiva.

Bhakti Lata, Alachua, USA: Vyasa Puja Offering 2010

Dear Radhanath Swami,

Please accept my respects, and please offer my humble respects to Srila Prabhupad.

A couple years ago, there was a fad here in America where thousands, even millions, of people decided to wear bracelets embroidered with the letters: “WWJD?”

What Would Jesus Do?

I guess it was a reminder to Christians to be compassionate and loving, and to act in such a way to exemplify the life of Christ every moment of their lives. But I have come to believe that we can apply this principle to anyone that we admire as a beacon of love and compassion. So for the past year, something rather spontaneous has happened: more and more I ask myself a similar question: “WWRNSD?”

What Would Radhanath Swami Do?

Every day, I apply this question to the decisions I make in my life, from school and career choices, down to how I interact with the cashier at Wal-Mart. It has been a revolutionary experience for my heart.

I feel inspired by your example because I can’t help but feel that that every moment of your life you are living by the principles taught by Srila Prabhupad. And for you to stay in touch with those principles, and to apply them practically into your life, maybe every day you ask yourself, “WWSPD?”

What Would Srila Prabhupad Do?

Isn’t that the most beautiful question?

Sincerely,

Bhakti lata dasi
