Çré Ramä-vaikuëöha-çvetadvépordhva-vaikuëöhäjita-pada-çré-

lokäcala-väsiné-çré-sakhénäm upäkhyänam

The Story of the Gopés That were Residents of Ramä-vaikuëöha,

Çvetadvépa, Urdhva-vaikuëöha, Ajita-pada, and Çré Lokäcala

anyäsäà caiva gopénäà

varëanaà çåëu maithila

sarva-päpa-haraà puëyaà

hari-bhakti-vivardhanam

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; anyäsäm—of the

other; ca—and; eva—indeed; gopénäm—gopés; varëanam—description; çåëu—please hear; maithila—O

king of Mithilä; sarva-päpa—all sins;

haram—removing; puëyam—sacred; hari-bhakti-

vivardhanam—increasing devotion for Lord Kåñëa.

Çré Närada said: O king of Mithilä, please hear the story of

the other gopés, a sacred story that removes all sins, and

increases one's love for Lord Kåñëa.

néti-vin märgadaù çuklaù

pataìgo divya-vähanaù

gopeñöäç ca vraje räjan

jätä ñaò våñabhänavaù

néti-vit—Nitivit; märgadaù—Margada;

çuklaù—Sukla; pataìgaù—Patanga; divya-

vähanaù—Divyavahana; gopeñöäç—Gopesta; ca—and;

vraje—in Vraja; räjan—O king; jätä—born; ñaò—the

six; våñabhänavaù—Våñabhänus.

O king, the six Våñabhänus: Nétivit, Märgada, Çukla,

Pataìga, Divyavähana, and Gopeñöa, were born in Vraja.

lakñmé-pati-varät prajäù

ramä-vaikuëöha-väsinyaù

çré-sakhyo 'pi samudra-jäù

ürdhvaà vaikuëöha-väsinyas

tathäjita-padäçritäù

çré-lokäcala-väsinyaù

çré-sakhyo 'pi samudra-jäù

teñäm—of them; gåheñu—in the homes; saïjätaù—born; lakñmé-pati-varät—from the blessing of Lord

Näräyaëa, the husband of the goddess of fortune;

prajäù—daughters; ramä-vaikuëöha-väsinyaù—the residents of

Ramä-Vaikuëöha; çré-sakhyaù—the friends of the goddess of

fortune; api—even; samudra-jäù—born from the

ocean; ürdhvaà vaikuëöha-väsinyaù—the residents of Urdhva-

Vaikuntha; tathäjita-padäçritäù—they who had taken shelter

of Lord Ajita; çré-lokäcala-väsinyaù—the residents of

Lokacala; çré-sakhyaù—the friends of the goddess of

fortune; api—also; samudra-jäù—born from the ocean.

In their homes, by a benediction granted by Lord Näräyaëa,

were born the girls of Ramä-Vaikuëöha, Urdhva-Vaikuëöha,

Lokäcala, and Ajitapada, who had all been born from the ocean of

milk and who were all friends of the goddess of fortune.

cintayantyaù sadä çrémad-

govinda-caraëämbujam

çré-kåñëasya prasädärthaà

täbhir mägha-vrataà kåtam

cintayantyaù—meditating; sadä—always; çrémad-

govinda-caraëämbujam—on Lord Kåñëa's lotus feet; çré-

kåñëasya—of Lord Kåñëa; prasädärtham—to gain the favor; täbhiù—by them; mägha-vratam—the vow of Magha;

kåtam—was performed.

Always thinking of Lord Kåñëa's lotus feet, to gain His

favor they followed the vow of Mägha-vrata.

Text 6

mäghasya çukla-païcamyäà

vasantädau hariù svayam

täsäà prema-parékñärthaà

kåñëo vai tad-gåhän gataù

mäghasya—of the month of Magha; çukla-païcamyäm—on the fifth day of the bright fortnight;

vasantädau—at the beginning of spring; hariù—Kåñëa;

svayam—personally; täsäm—of them; prema—the love; parékña-artham—to test; kåñëaù—Kåñëa;

vai—indeed; tad-gåhän—to their homes; gataù—went.

On the fifth day of the bright fortnight of the month of

Mägha (January-February), as springtime was about to begin, to

test their love for Him, Lord Kåñëa went to these gopés' homes

vyäghra-carmämbaraà bibhran

jaöa-mukuöa-maëòitaù

vibhüti-dhüsaro veëuà

vädayan mohayan jagat

vyäghra-carmämbaram—a tiger's sking garment;

bibhran—wearing; jäta-mukuöa-maëòitaù—with matted locks; vibhüti—opulences; dhüsaraù—covered;

veëum—flute; vädayan—playing; mohayan—charming;

jagat—the universe.

Dressed in a tigerskin, His hair matted, and His natural

opulences concealed, by playing the flute he enchanted all the

worlds.

Text 8

täsäà véthiñu sampräptià

vékñya gopyo 'pi sarvataù

äyayur darçanaà kartuà

mohitäù prema-vihvaläù

täsäm—of them; véthiñu—on the opathways;

sampräptim—attainment; vékñya—seeing; gopyaù—the

gopés; api—also; sarvataù—in all respects;

äyayuù—arrived; darçanam—seeing; kartum—to do;

mohitäù—enchanted; prema-vihvaläù—overcome with love.

Seeing Him on the path, the enchanted gopés were overcome

with love. To gaze at Him, they came close.

Text 9

atéva sundaraà dåñövä

yoginaà gopa-kanyakäù

ücuù parasparaà sarväù

premänanda-samäkuläù

atéva—very; sundaram—handsome; dåñövä—seeing; yoginam—the yogi; gopa-kanyakäù—the gopés;

ücuù—said; parasparam—among themselves;

sarväù—all; premänanda-samäkuläù—filled with bliss.

As they gazed at this very handsome yogé, the blissful gopés

spoke among themselves.

çré-gopya ücuù

ko 'yaà çiçur nanda-sutäkåtir vä

kasyäpi putro dhanino nåpasya

naré-ku-väg-bäëa-vibhinna-marmä

jäto virakto gata-kåtya-karmä

çré-gopya ücuù—the gopés said; kaù—who?;

ayam—this; çiçuù—boy; nanda-sutäkåtiù—the from of

Nanda's son; vä—or; kasyäpi—of someone;

putraù—the son; dhaninaù—of a wealthy man; nåpasya—of

a king; naré—of a woman; ku—harsh;

väg—words; bäëa—arrows; vibhinna—broken;

marmä—heart; jätaù—born; viraktaù—renounced;

gata-kåtya-karmä—performed pious deeds.

Thwe gopés said: Who is this? Is this Nanda's son or the

song of a wealthy king? Is He renounced because His heart was

broken by a woman's harsh words or because He has performed many

pious deeds?

Text 11

atéva-ramyaù sumkumära-deho

manoja-vad-viçva-mano-haro 'yam

aho kathaà jévati cäsya mätä

pitä ca bhäryä bhaginé vinainam

ativa-ramyaù—very handsome; sumkumära-dehaù—delicate

features; manoja—Kämadeva; vat—like; viçva—of

everyone; manaù—the herarts; haraù—enchanting;

ayam—He; ahaù—Oh; katham—how?; jévati—lives; ca—and; asya—of Him; mätä—the mother;

pitä—father; ca—and; bhäryä—wife;

bhaginé—sister; vinä—without; enam—Him.

He is very handsome. His features are graceful and delicate.

Like Kämadeva, He charms the hearts of the entire world. Ah! How

can He live without mother, father, sister, and wife?

Text 12

evaà täù sarvato yüthé-

bhütvä sarvä vrajäìganäù

papracchus taà yogi-varaà

vismitäù prema-vihvaläù

evam—thusd; täù—they; sarvataù—all; yüthé-

bhütvä—gtahered together; sarvä—all; vrajäìganäù—the

girls of Vraja; papracchuù—asked; tam—Him;

yogi-varam—the best of yogis; vismitäù—struck with

wonder; prema-vihvaläù—overcome with love.

Filled with wonder and love, the assembled girls of Vraja

asked many questions.

çré-gopya ücuù

kas tvaà yogin näma kià te

kutra väsas tu te mune

kä våttis tava kä siddhir

vada no vadataà vara

çré-gopya ücuù—the gopés said; kaù—who?;

tvam—You; yogin—O yogi; näma—name;

kim—what?; te—of You; kutra—where;

väsaù—residence; tu—indfeed; te—of You; mune—O

sage; kä—what?; våttiù—activity; tava—of

You; kä—what?; siddhiù—perfection;

vada—tell; naù—to us; vadatäm—of speakers;

vara—O best.

The gopés said: O yogé, who are You? What is Your name? O

sage, where do You live? What do You do? What mystic powers have

You attained? O best of eloquent speakers, please tell us.

Text 14

çré-siddha uväca

yogeçvaro 'haà me väsaù

sadä mäna-sarovare

nämnä svayamprakäço 'haà

nirannaù sva-balät sadä

çré-siddha uväca—the perfect yogi said; yogeçvaraù—a

master of yoga; aham—I; me—of Me; väsaù—the

residence; sadä—always; mäna-sarovare—in Mana-

sarovara; nämnä—by name;

svayamprakäçaù—Svayamprakäça; aham—I;

nirannaù—fasting; sva-balät—by My own power;

sadä—always.

The perfect yogé said: I am a master of yoga. I always stay

at Mäna-sarovara. My name is Svayamprakäça. I never eat. My own

mystic power keeps Me alive.

Text 15

särthe paramahäàsänäà

yämy ahaà te vrajäìganäù

bhütaà bhävyaà vartamänaà

vedmy ahaà divya-darçanaù

särthe—in the treasure; paramahäàsänäm—of the great

swans; yämy—I go; aham—I; te—these;

vrajäìganäù—O girls of Vraja; bhütam—past;

bhävyam—future; vartamänam—present; vedmy—I know; aham—I; divya-darçanaù—spiritual vision.

O girls of Vraja, I have attained the great treasure of the

paramahaàsas. I have spiritual eyes. I can see the past, present, and future.

Text 16

uccäöanaà märaëaà ca

mohanaà stambhanaà tathä

janämi mantra-vidyäbhir

vaçé-karaëam eva ca

uccäöanam—ruin; märaëam—death; ca—and;

mohanam—bewilderment; stambhanam—being stunned;

tathä—so; janämi—I know; mantra-vidyäbhiù—with the

knowledge of mantras; vaçé-karaëam—to bring under

control; eva—indeed; ca—also.

I know mantras that can ruin people, kill them, bewilder

them, paralyze them, or bring them under My control.

Text 17

çré-gopya ücuù

yadi jänäsi yogiàs tvaà

värtäà käla-trayodbhaväm

kià vartate no manasi

vada tarhi mahä-mate

çré-gopya ücuù—the gopés said; yadi—if;

jänäsi—You know; yogiàù—O yogi; tvam—You;

värtäm—news; käla—time; traya—three phases;

udbhaväm—manifested; kim—what?; vartate—is;

naù—of us; manasi—in the mind; vada—please tell; tarhi—then; mahä-mate—O wise one.

Thw gopés said: O wise yogé, if You know the past, present,

and future, then please tell us one thing: What are we thinking

at this moment?

Text 18

çré-siddha uväca

bhävaténäà ca karëänte

kathanéyam idaà vacaù

yusmad-äjïayä vä vakñye

sarveñäà çåëvatäm iha

çré-siddha uväca—the perfect yogi said; bhävaténäm—of

you; ca—and; karëänte—whispered into the ear;

kathanéyam—should be spoken; idam—this;

vacaù—word; yusmad-äjïayä—by your order;

vä—or; vakñye—I will speak aloud; sarveñäm—of all; çåëvatäm—listening; iha—here.

The perfect yogé said: The answer to this question I will now whisper in each girl's ear, or, if you request, I will speak

it aloud so all may hear.

Texts 19 and 20

çré-gopya ücuù

satyaà yogeçvaro 'si tvaà

tri-käla-jïo na saàçayaù

vaçé-karaëa-mantreëa

sadyaù paöhana-mätrataù

yadi so 'traiva cäyäti

cintito yo 'sti vai mune

tadä manyämahe tväà vai

mantriëäà pravaraà param

çré-gopya ücuù—the gopés said; satyam—the truth;

yogeçvaraù—the master of yoga; asi—are; tvam—You; tri-käla-jïaù—understanding the three phases of

time; na—no; saàçayaù—doubt; vaçé-karaëa-

mantreëa—by a mantra to bring others under Your control;

sadyaù—at once; paöhana-mätrataù—simply by reciting;

yadi—if; saù—He; atra—here; eva—indeed;

ca—and; äyäti—goes; cintitaù—considered; yaù—one

who; asti—is; vai—indeed; mune—O sage;

tadä—then; manyämahe—we consider; tväm—You;

vai—indeed; mantriëäm—of mantra-chanters; pravaraà

param—the best.

The gopés said: O sage, if it is true that You are a master

of yoga, and if without doubt that You know the past, present,

and future, and if by merely chanting a mantra You can actually

bring others under Your control, then we think You must be the

best of all mantra-chanters.

Text 21

çré-siddha uväca

durlabho durghaöo bhävo

yusmäbhir gaditaù striyaù

tathäpy ahaà kariñyämi

väkyaà na calate satäm

çré-siddha uväca—the perfect yogi said;

durlabhaù—unattainable; durghaöaù—impossible;

bhävaù—nature; yusmäbhiù—by you; gaditaù—said;

striyaù—O women; tathäpy—still; aham—I;

kariñyämi—will do; väkyam—words; na—not;

calate—wavers; satäm—of the saintly devotees.

The perfect yogé said: Any impossible thing you ask, I can

do. The words of saintly persons do not prove false.

Text 22

nimélayata neträëi

mä çocäà kuruta striyaù

bhaviñyati na sandeho

yuñmäkaà käryam eva ca

nimélayata—closing; neträëi—eyes; mä—don't; çocäm—lament; kuruta—do; striyaù—O girls;

bhaviñyati—will be; na—not; sandehaù—doubt;

yuñmäkam—of you; käryam—to be done; eva—indeed;

ca—and.

O girls, don't lament. Close your eyes and you will attain

your wish. Of this there is no doubt.

Text 23

çré-närada uväca

tatheti mélitäkñiñu

gopéñu bhagavän hariù

vihäya tad-yogi-rüpaà

babhau çré-nanda-nandanaù

çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; tathä—so be it; iti—thus; mélita—closed; akñiñu—eyes;

gopéñu—gopés; bhagavän—Lord; hariù—Hari;

vihäya—taking; tad-yogi-rüpam—that yogi's form;

babhau—manifested; çré-nanda-nandanaù—the son of nanda.

Çré Närada said: As the gopés stood with closed eyes, the

Lord abandoned the form of a yogé and again became Kåñëa, the son

of Nanda.

Text 24

neträëy unmélya dadåçuù

sänandaà nanda-nandanam

vismitäs tat-prabhäva-jïä

harñitä moham ägatäù

neträëy—eyes; unmélya—opening; dadåçuù—saw; sänandam—with bliss; nanda-nandanam—the son of Nanda; vismitäù—filled with wonder; tat-prabhäva-jïäù—understanding His transcendental power;

harñitä—delighted; moham—enchantment; ägatäù—attained.

Opening their eyes, they happily gazed at Kåñëa, the son of

Nanda. Delighted, filled with wonder, and now aware of His

transcendental powers, the gopés fainted unconscious.

Text 25

mägha-mäse mahä-räse

puëye våndävane vane

täbhiù särdhaà haré reme

surébhiù sura-räò iva

mägha-mäse—in the month of Magha; mahä-räse—in the

great rasa dance; puëye—dascred; våndävane—in

Våndävana; vane—forest; täbhiù—them;

särdham—with; hariù—Lord Kåñëa; reme—enjoyed;

surébhiù—with the demiugoddesses; sura-räò—the king of

heaven; iva—like.

As Indra enjoys with the girls of Suraloka, so Lord Kåñëa

enjoyed with these gopés in a great räsa-dance in sacred

Våndävana forest during the month of Mägha.
