Pütanä-mokña


The Liberation of Pütanä

çré-näradaù uväca—Çré Närada said; çauri—of Vasudeva; anämaya—the welfare; påcchä—question; artham—for the purpose; karam—tax; dätum—to give; nåpasya—to the king; ca—also; putra—of his son; utsavam—the festival; kathayitum—to describe; nande—when Nanda; çré-mathuram—to Çré Mathurä; gate—went; kaàsena—by Kaàsa; preñitä—sent; duñöä—demon; pütanä—Pütanä; ghäta-käriëé—murderess; pureñu in cities; gräma—towns; ghoñeñu—and cowherd villages; caranté—going; gharghara-svanä—making a rumbling sound.


While, to ask about Vasudeva's welfare, to pay his tax to the king, and to describe his son's birth-festival, Nanda was in Çré Mathurä, the murderess Pütanä, sent by Kaàsa, was traveling among cities, towns, and cowherd villages, making a menacing rumbling sound.

gopa-gopé-gaëäkulam
rüpaà dadhära sä divyaà
vapuù ñoòaça-varñikam


atha—then; gokulam—Gokula; äsädya—attaining; gopa—of gopas; gopé—and gopés; gaëa—with multitudes; äkulam—filled; rüpam—a form; dadhära—assumed; sä—she; divyam—glorious; vapuù—form; ñoòaça—sixteen; varñikam—years.


Coming to Gokula, which was filled with many gopas and gopés, the demoness assumed the form of a splendid sixteen-year old girl.

na ke 'pi rurudhur gopäù
sundaréà täà ca gopikäù
çacéà väëéà ramäà rambhäà
ratià ca kñipatém iva


na—not; ke api—anyone; rurudhuù—stopped; gopäù—gopas; sundarém—beautiful; täm—her; ca—also; gopikäù—gopés; çacém—Çacé; väëém—Sarasvaté; ramäàlakñmé; rambhäm—Rambhä; ratim—Rati; ca—also; kñipatém—eclipsing; iva—as if.


No gopa or gopé stopped this beautiful girl, who seemed to eclipse the goddesses Çacé, Sarasvaté, Lakñmé, Rambhä, and Rati.

rohiëyäà ca yaçodäyäà

dharñitäyäà sphurat-kucä
aìkam ädäya taà bälaà

lälayanté punaù punaù


rohiëyäm—when Rohiëé; ca—also; yaçodäyäm—Yaçodä; dharñitäyäm—were arrogantly ignored; sphurat—manifest; kucä—breasts; aìkam—on her lap; ädäya—taking; tam—Him; bälam—the infant; lälayanté—fondling; punaù punaù—again andagain.


Ignoring Rohiëé and Yaçodä, she took the infant on her lap, fondled Him again and again, and then exposed her breasts.

dadau çiçor mahä-ghorä
käläkütävåtaà stanam

präëaiù särdhaà papau dugdhaà
kaöuà roñävåto hariù



dadau—placed; çiçoù—of the infant; mahä—very; ghorä—terrible; käläküta—with poison; ävåtam—covered; stanam—breast; präëaiù—lifebreath; särdham—with; papau—drank; dugdham—milk; kaöum—bitter; roña—with anger; ävåtaù—filled; hariù—Lord Hari.


When the very horrible demoness gave her poison-covered breast to Him, infant Lord Hari became angry and drank her life- breath along with the bitter milk.

dhavanté piòita-stanä

nétvä bahir gatä taà vai
gata-mäyä babhüva ha



muïca—leave!; muïca—leave!; vadanté—saying; ittham—thus; dhavanté—running; piòita—tortured; stanä—breasts; nétvä—bringing; bahiù—outside; gatä—gone; tam—Him; vai—indeed; gata—gone; mäyä—illusion; babhüva—became; ha—indeed.


Screaming "Leave me! Leave me!", and her breast filled with pain, she ran outside, bringing the infant with her and her magical illusion now gone.

patan-neträ çveta-gäträ

rudanté patitä bhuvi

nanäda tena brahmäëòaà
sapta lokair bilaiù saha


patat—falling; neträ—eyes; çveta—perspiring; gäträ—limbs; rudanté—screaming; patitä—fallen; bhuvi—to the ground; nanäda—made a sound; tena—by that; brahmäëòam—the universe; sapta-lokaiù—the seven planetary systems; bilaiù—and the expanses of outer space; saha—with.


Screaming, her eyes bulging and limbs perspiring, she fell to the ground, making a sound that filled the universe with its seven planetary systems and empty regions of outer space.

cacäla—moved; vasudhä—the earth; dvépaiù—with its continents; tat—that; adbhutam—a wonder; iva—like; abhavat—was; ñaö-kroçam—twelve miles; sä—she; dåòhän—hard; dérghän—tall; våkñän—trees; påñöha-tale—to the ground; gatän—went; cürëé-cakära—broke into pieces; vapuñä—with the body; vajräagena—lightning bolt; nåpeçvara—O king of kings; vadantaù—saying; te—they; gopa-gaëäù—the gopas; vékñya—seeing; ghoram—horrible; vapuù—form; mahat—great.


A great wonder happened. The earth and all its continents moved. She became twelve mils long and her thunderbolt body broke many tall and strong trees and made them fall to the ground. O king of kings, when the gopas saw her horrible gigantic body, they said:

asyäù—of her; aìguli-gaù—gone on a finger; bälaù—infant; na—not; jévati—lives; kadäcana—ever; tasyäù—of her; urasi—on the breast; sänandam—happily; kréòantam—playing; su- smitam—smiling; çiçum—child; dugdham—milk; pitvä—having drunk; jåmbhamänam—yawning; tam—Him; dåñövä—seeing; jagåhuù—grabbed; striyaù—the women; yaçodayä—by Yaçodä; ca—also; rohiëyä—by Rohiëé; nidhäya—placing; urasi—on the breast; vismitäù—astonished.


"The child was crushed by her fingers. He could not have remained alive." Then, seeing the smiling infant yawn after drinking the demoness' milk, and then play on her breast, the astonished women, along with Yaçodä and Rohiëia, grabbed Him, and pulled Him down from the breast.

sarvato bälakaà nétvä
rakñäà cakrur vidhänataù
kälindé-puëya-måt-toyair
go-puccha-bhramaëädibhiù


sarvataù—completely; bälakam—the infant; nétvä—taking; rakñäm—protection; cakruù—did; vidhänataù—properly; kälindé—of the Yamunä; puëya—sacred; måt—with mud; toyaiù—and water; gaù—of the cows; puccha—tails; bhramaëa—with the movements; ädibhiù—beginning.


Then they took the child and acted to give Him protection by anointing Him with the Yamunä's sacred water and clay, by having a cow wave its tail before Him, and by doing other things also.

snäpayitvä tv idaà jaguù



gaù—cow; mutra—urine; gaù—cow; rajobhiù—with dust; ca—and; snäpayitvä—bathing; tu—indeed; idam—this; jaguù—sang.


Bathing Him with cow dust and cow urine, they chanted:

çré-gopya ücuù

çré-kåñëas te çiraù pätu

vaikuëöhaù kaëöham eva hi

çvetadvépa-patiù karëau
näsikaà yajïa-rüpa-dhåk



çré-gopyaù ücuù—the gopés said; çré-kåñëaù—may Çré Kåñëa; te—Your; çiraù—head; pätu—protect; vaikuëöhaù—may Lord Vaikuëöha; kaëöham—neck; eva—certainly; hi—indeed; çvetadvépa-patiù—the Lord od Çvetadvépa; karëau—ears; näsikam—nose; yajïa-rüpa-dhåk—He who has the form of Lord Yajïa.


The gopés said: May Çré Kåñëa protect Your head. May Lord Vaikuëöha protect Your neck. May the Lord of Çvetadvépa protect Your ears. May Lord Yajïa protect Your nose.

nåsiàho netra-yugmaà ca

jihväà daçarathätmajaù

adharäv avatäà te tu
nara-näräyanäv åñé



nåsiàhaù—Nåsiàha; netra—eyes; yugmam—pair; ca—and; jihväm—tongue; daçarathätmajaù—Lord Räma, the son of Daçaratha; adharau—lips; avatäm—may protect; te—Your; tu—indeed; nara-näräyanau åñé—Nara-Näräyaëa Åñi.


May Lord Nåsiàha protect Your two eyes. May Lord Räma protect Your tongue. May Lord Nara-Näräyaëa Åñi protect Your lips.

kapolau päntu te säkñät
sanakädyäù kalä hareù
bhalaà te sveta-väräho

närado bhrü-late 'vatu


kapolau—cheeks; päntu—may protect; te—they; säkñät—directly; sanakädyäù—the four Kumäras; kaläù—kalä expansions; hareù—of Lord Hari; bhalam—forehead; te—Your; sveta-värähaù—Çveta Varäha; näradaù—Närada; bhrü-late—the two vines of Your eyebrows; avatu—may protect.


May the four Kumäras. who are Lord Hari's kalä expansions, protect Your cheeks. May Lord Çveta Varäha protect Your forehead. May Lord Närada protect the two vines of Your eyebrows.

skandhau dväv åñabhaù pätu
karau matsyaù prapätu te



cibukam—chin; kapilaù—Kapila; pätu—may protect; dattätreya—Dattätreya; uraù—chest; avatu—may protect; skandhau—shoulders; dvau—two; åñabhaù—Åñabha; pätu—may protect; karau—hands; matsyaù—Matsya; prapätu—may protect; te—Your.


May Lord Kapila protect Your chin. May Lord Dattätreya protect Your chest. May Lord Åñabha protect both Your shoulders. May Lord Matsya protect Your hands.

påthuù påthula-vikramaù

udaraà kamaöhaù pätu
näbhià dhanvantariç ca te


dor-daëòam—arms; satatam—always; rakñet—may protect; påthuù—Påthu; påthula-vikramaù—very powerful; udaram—belly; kamaöhaù—Lord Kürma; pätu—may protect; näbhim—navel; dhanvantariù—Dhanvantari; ca—and; te—Your.


May powerful Lord Påthu always protect Your arms. May Lord Kürma protect Your abdomen. May Lord Dhanvantari protect Your navel.

mohiné guhya-deçaà ca

kaöià te vämano 'vatu

påñöhaà paraçurämaç ca
tavorü bädaräyaëaù



mohiné—Mohiné; guhya-deçam—private parts; ca—also; kaöim—hips; te—Your; vämanaù—Vämana; avatu—may protect; påñöham—back; paraçurämaù—Paraçuräma; ca—also; tava—Your; ürü—thighs;' bädaräyaëaù—Vyäsa.


May Çrématé Mohiné protect Your private parts. My Lord
Vämana protect Your hips. May Lord Paraçuräma protect Your back. May Lord Vyäsa protect Your thighs.

balo jänu-dvayaà pätu

jaìghe buddhaù prapätu te

padau pätu sa-gulphau ca

kalkir dharma-patiù prabhuù



balaù—Balaräma; jänu-dvayam—two knees; pätu—may protect; jaìghe—legs; buddhaù—Buddha; prapätu—may protect; te—Your; padau—feet; pätu—may protect; sa—with; gulphau—ankles; ca—also; kalkiù—Kalki; dharma—of religion; patiù—the master; prabhuù—the Lord.


May Lord Balaräma protect Your knees. May Lord Buddha protect Your shins. May Lord Kalki, the master of religion, protect Your ankles and feet.


Text 22


sarva-rakñä-karaà divyaà

çré-kåñëa-kavacaà param

idaà bhagavatä dattaà
brahmaëe näbhi-paìkaje


sarva-rakñä-karam—all protection; divyam—glorious; çré-kåñëa—of Çré Kåñëa; kavacam—the armor; param—great; idam—this; bhagavatä—by the Lord; dattam—given; brahmaëe—to Brahmä; näbhi—navel; paìkaje—on the lotus.


The Supreme Personality of Godhead gave this glorious and transcendental Çré Kåñëa-kavaca (armor of Lord Kåñëa), which gives all protection, to the demigod Brahmä on the lotus flower of His navel.


Text 23



brahmaëä çambhave dattaà
çambhur durväsase dadau

durväsäù çré-yaçomatyai
prädäc chré-nanda-mandire



brahmaëä—by Brahmä; çambhave—to Lord Çiva; dattam—givem; çambhuù—Lord Çiva; durväsase—to Durväsä; dadau—gave; durväsäù—Durväsä; çré- yaçomatyai—to Çré Yaçodä; prädät—gave; çré-nanda—of Çré Nanda; mandire—in the palace.


Then Brahmä gave it to Lord Çiva. Lord Çiva gave it to Durväsä Muni. Durväsä Muni gave it to Çré Yaçodä in Çré Nanda's palace.


Text 24



anena rakñäà kåtväsya

gopébhiù çré-yaçomaté
päyayitvä stanaà dänaà

viprebhyaù pradadau mahat



anena—by it; rakñäm—protection; kåtvä—doing; asya—of Him; gopébhiù—by the gopés; çré- yaçomaté—Çré Yaçodä; päyayitvä—causing to drink; stanam—breast; dänam—charity; viprebhyaù—to the brähmaëas; pradadau—gave; mahat—great.


In this way Çré Yaçodä and the gopés gave protection to (infant Kåñëa). Then Çré Yaçodä gave Him her breast milk to drink, and then she gave great charity to the brähmaëas.

tadä nandädayo gopä

ägatä mathurä-purät

dåñövä ghoraà pütanäkhyaà
babhüvur bhaya-vihvaläù



tadä—then; nanda-ädayaù—headed by Nanda; gopäù—the gopas; ägatäù—arrived; mathurä-purät—from the city of Mathurä; dåñövä—seeing; ghoram—horror; pütanä-äkhyam—named Pütanä; babhüvuù—became; bhaya—with fear; vihvaläù—overwhelmed.


When, just returned from Mathurä City, the gopas headed by Nanda saw horrible Pütanä, they were overcome with fear.

chitvä kuöhärais tad-dehaà
gopäù çré-yamunä-taöe

anekäç ca citäù kåtvä
dahayäm äsur eva tam



chitvä—cutting; kuöhäraiù—with axes; tad- deham—her body; gopäù—the gopas; çré-yamunä-taöe—on the Yamunä's shore; anekäù—many; ca—also; citäù—pyres; kåtvä—making; dahayäm äsuù—burned; eva—indeed; tam—it.


Cutting it up with axes, and making many pyres by Çré Yamunä's shore, the gopas burned her body.


Text 27



elä-lavaìga-çrékhaëòa-

tagaräguru-gandhi-bhåt

dhümo dagdhasya dehasya
pavitrasya samutthitaù



elä-lavaìga-çrékhaëòa—of elä, lavaìga, and çrékhaëòa; tagara—of tagara; äguru—and of aguru; gandhi—the scent; bhåt—manifesting; dhümaù—smoke; dagdhasya—of the burned; dehasya—body; pavitrasya—purified; samutthitaù—risen.


The smoke that rose from her now purified burning body was fragrant as elä, lavaìga, çrékhaëòa, tagra, and aguru.

aho kåñëam åte kaà vä
vrajäma çaraëaà tv iha
pütanäyai mokña-gatià
dadau patita-pävanaù


ahaù—oh; kåñëam—for Kåñëa; åte—except; kam—to whom?; vä—or; vrajäma—we go; çaraëam—shelter; tu—certainly; iha—here; pütanäyai—to Pütanä; mokña-gatim—the destination of liberation; dadau—gave; patita—of the fallen; pävanaù—the purifier.


Of whom else but Kåñëa will we take shelter? The purifier of the fallen, He gave liberation to Pütanä.

çré-bahuläçva uväca

keyaà vä rakñasé pürvaà

pütanä bäla-ghätiné

viña-stanä duñöa-bhävä

paraà mokñaà kathaà gatä



çré-bahuläçvaù uväca—Çré Bahuläçva said; kä—who?; iyam—she; vä—or; rakñasé—the demoness; pürvam—before; pütanä—Pütanä; bäla—of children; ghätiné—the murderess; viña—poison; stanä—breast; duñöa-bhävä—wicked; param—ultimate; mokñam—libreation; katham—how?; gatä—attained.


Çré Bahuläçva said: Who was this demoness in her previous
birth? Why did evil Pütanä, who murdered children by giving them her poisoned breast, attain ultimate liberation?

bali-yajïe vämanasya
dåñövä rüpam ataù param
bali-kanyä ratnamälä

putra-snehaà cakära ha



çré-närada uväca—Çré Närada said; bali—of Bali Mahäräja; yajïe—in the sacrifice; vämanasya—of Lord Vämana; dåñövä—seeing; rüpam—the form; ataù param—then; bali—of Bali; kanyä—the daughter; ratnamälä—Ratnamälä; putra—to a son; sneham—affection; cakära ha—did.


Seeing the form of Lord Vämana in Bali Mahäraja's yajïa, Bali's daughter Ratnamälä felt for the Lord (a mother's) love for her son.

etädåço yadi bhaved

bälas taà hi çuci-smitam

päyayämi stanaà tena

prasannaà me manas tadä



etädåçaù—like that; yadi—if; bhavet—would be; bälaù—boy; tam—Him; hi—certainly; çuci—pure; smitam—smile; päyayämi—I give to drink; stanam—breast; tena—by that; prasannam—happy; me—my; manaù—heart; tadä—then.


(She thought:) If I had a son like Him, then I would give that gloriously smiling son the milk from my breast to drink. In that way my heart would become happy.

baleù parama-bhaktasya
sutäyai vämano hariù
manorathas tu te bhuyän

manasy api varaà dadau


baleù—of Bali Mahäräja; parama—great; bhaktasya—devotee; sutäyai—to the daughter; vämanaù—Vämana; hariù—the Supreme Personality of Godhead; manorathaù—the desire; tu—certainly; te—of you; bhuyät—may be; manasi—in His heart; api—also; varam—the benediction; dadau—gave. "may your desire be fulfilled."


In this way the Personality of Godhead, Lord Vämana, gave a blessing in his heart to the daughter of His great devotee Bali Mahäräja.


Text 33


säbhavad dväparänte vai

pütanä näma viçrutä

çré-kåñëa-sparça-sambhütä
paraà präpta-manorathä



sä—she; abhavat—became; dväpara-ante—at the end of Dväpara-yuga; vai—indeed; pütanä—Pütanä; näma—named; viçrutä—famous; çré-kåñëa—of Çré Kåñëa; sparça—by the touch; sambhütä—manifested; param—then; präpta—attained; manorathä—desire.


At the end of Dväpara-yuga she became known as Pütanä. Then, by Lord Kåñëa's touch, she attained her desire.


Text 34



yaù pütanä-mokñam imaà çåëoti

kåñëasya devasya parät parasya

bhaktir bhavet prema-yutäpi tasya
tri-varga-çuddhiù kim u maithilendra



yaù—who; pütanä—of Pütanä; mokñam—liberation; imam—the; çåëoti—hears; kåñëasya devasya—of Lord Kåñëa; parät parasya—greater than the greatest; bhaktiù—devotion; bhavet—is; prema-yutä—with love; api—also; tasya—of Him; tri-varga—in the three goals of life; çuddhiù—purification; kim u—what to speak of?; maithila-indra—O king of Mithilä.


O king of Mithilä, a person who hears of Pütanä's liberation will become purified of the three material desires and will attain pure love and devotion for Lord Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is greater than the greatest.
