Although Namacarya Haridasa Thakura chanted the holy name day and night, he also found time to read and hear scripture, and he discoursed on the glories of the holy name with reference to scripture. And although he was fully absorbed in chanting the holy name, he was affectionate to the devotees and always tried to help them

Sunday feast lecture on Bhagavad-gita Chapter 7, Text 1 given by Subhag Swami.
Dallas, TX 2010-08-01
TRANSLATION
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Now hear, O son of Pritha, how by practicing yoga in full consciousness of Me, with mind attached to Me, you can know Me in full, free from doubt.
PURPORT
In this Seventh Chapter of Bhagavad-gita, the nature of Krishna consciousness is fully described. Krishna is full in all opulences, and how He manifests such opulences is described herein. Also, four kinds of fortunate people who become attached to Krishna and four kinds of unfortunate people who never take to Krishna are described in this chapter.
In the first six chapters of Bhagavad-gita, the living entity has been described as nonmaterial spirit soul capable of elevating himself to self-realization by different types of yogas. At the end of the Sixth Chapter, it has been clearly stated that the steady concentration of the mind upon Krishna, or in other words Krishna consciousness, is the highest form of all yoga. By concentrating one's mind upon Krishna, one is able to know the Absolute Truth completely, but not otherwise. Impersonal brahmajyoti or localized Paramatma realization is not perfect knowledge of the Absolute Truth, because it is partial. Full and scientific knowledge is Krishna, and everything is revealed to the person in Krishna consciousness. In complete Krishna consciousness one knows that Krishna is ultimate knowledge beyond any doubts. Different types of yoga are only steppingstones on the path of Krishna consciousness. One who takes directly to Krishna consciousness automatically knows about brahmajyoti and Paramatma in full. By practice of Krishna consciousness yoga, one can know everything in full -- namely the Absolute Truth, the living entities, the material nature, and their manifestations with paraphernalia.
One should therefore begin yoga practice as directed in the last verse of the Sixth Chapter. Concentration of the mind upon Krishna the Supreme is made possible by prescribed devotional service in nine different forms, of which sravanam is the first and most important. The Lord therefore says to Arjuna, tac chrinu, or "Hear from Me." No one can be a greater authority than Krishna, and therefore by hearing from Him one receives the greatest opportunity to become a perfectly Krishna conscious person. One has therefore to learn from Krishna directly or from a pure devotee of Krishna -- and not from a nondevotee upstart, puffed up with academic education.
In the Srimad-Bhagavatam this process of understanding Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Absolute Truth, is described in the Second Chapter of the First Canto as follows:
"To hear about Krishna from Vedic literatures, or to hear from Him directly through the Bhagavad-gita, is itself righteous activity. And for one who hears about Krishna, Lord Krishna, who is dwelling in everyone's heart, acts as a best-wishing friend and purifies the devotee who constantly engages in hearing of Him. In this way, a devotee naturally develops his dormant transcendental knowledge. As he hears more about Krishna from the Bhagavatam and from the devotees, he becomes fixed in the devotional service of the Lord. By development of devotional service one becomes freed from the modes of passion and ignorance, and thus material lusts and avarice are diminished. When these impurities are wiped away, the candidate remains steady in his position of pure goodness, becomes enlivened by devotional service and understands the science of God perfectly. Thus bhakti-yoga severs the hard knot of material affection and enables one to come at once to the stage of asamsayam-samagram, understanding of the Supreme Absolute Truth Personality of Godhead." (Bhag. 1.2.17-21)
Therefore only by hearing from Krishna or from His devotee in Krishna consciousness can one understand the science of Krishna.
What am I trying to do? How am I trying to do it? What are my assumptions? What if my assumptions were wrong? What would I have to do differently if my key assumptions were wrong?
Sandra from Christchurch, New Zealand wrote me yesterday: "Hello Kurma, do you have any secrets for making chips that are crisp outside and soft inside? I love your website by the way."
My reply: "Thanks Sandra. I receive a lot of letters on this subject. Here's the step-by-step process":
Step One Begin by choosing the right kind of potatoes. This is the most important step. In different countries the ideal chip potato has different names. The best potato for chips should be neither too watery nor too high in sugar, which respectively give it a crispy texture and a light golden colour. In Australia, many feel Bintjes are the best, in UK it's King Edward. Not sure about USA. Or New Zealand for that matter. But you get the picture. Whatever the name, choose a floury potato.
Step Two Peel the potatoes, slice, and cut the slices into even batons. In different countries, the preferred chips can be thin or thick. Again, it's a matter of taste.
Step Three Once you have cut the chips you should rinse them thoroughly to remove the excess starch. Pat them dry with a clean tea towel or paper towel. Some even soak them in water first, before rinsing. Either way, they must be completely dried.
Step Four This step is called blanching; the chips are fried at 160°C (some prefer 170°C) for 4-6 minutes and lifted out just as they start to colour. Make sure you use clean oil to fry in (sunflower is good as it has a high smoking point). Personally, I like ghee. It has an even higher smoking point, and tastes divine. Not cheap, but the very, very best, taste-wise. To assure the correct oil temperature: if you do not have a mini deep-fryer at home it's worth investing in a thermometer to take out the guesswork.
Step Five So we're frying the chips in batches, allowing the oil to recover its heat before submerging the next batch. Don't overcrowd. The chips will be cooked on the inside but not crisp. Crisping comes next.
Step Seven After the initial batches of chips are all fried and set aside, increase the oil temperature to 180-190°C.
Step Eight Cook the chips a second time, again in batches, allowing the oil to recover its heat in between batches.
Step Nine Continue to fry until the chips have a nice crispy golden exterior.
Step Ten Drain on some paper towel, lightly season with sea salt and serve immediately.
By constantly chanting the maha-mantra, one makes progress in spiritual life and ultimately sees Krishna face to face:
"Srila Sridhara Svami quotes that to do what is good and to reject what is not good is called mangala, or auspicious. To do what is good means to accept everything favorable to the discharge of devotional service, and to reject what is not good means to reject everything not favorable for discharging devotional service. In our Krishna consciousness movement, we accept this principle by rejecting four prohibited items, namely illicit sex life, intoxication, gambling and flesh-eating, and accepting the daily chanting of at least sixteen rounds of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra and daily meditation three times a day by chanting the Gayatri mantra. In this way one can keep his brahminical culture and spiritual strength intact. By following these principles of devotional service, strictly chanting twenty-four hours a day the maha-mantra—Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare—one makes positive progress in spiritual life and ultimately becomes completely fit to see the Supreme Personality of Godhead face to face. Because the ultimate goal of studying or understanding the Vedic knowledge is to find Krishna, one who follows the Vedic principles as described above can from the very beginning see all the features of Lord Krishna, the Absolute Truth, very distinctly, as one can see one’s own face completely reflected in a clear mirror." (Srimad-Bhagavatam 4.21.42, purport)
The Lord reveals Himself to the offenseless chanter:
Chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra is the easiest process of meditation in this age. As soon as one chants the Hare Krishna mantra, he sees the forms of Krishna, Rama and Their energies, and that is the perfect stage of trance. One should not artificially try to see the form of the Lord while chanting Hare Krishna, but when the chanting is performed offenselessly the Lord will automatically reveal Himself to the view of the chanter. The chanter, therefore, has to concentrate on hearing the vibration, and without extra endeavor on his part, the Lord will automatically appear." (Srimad-Bhagavatam 4.8.53, purport)
Seeing Krishna is a very advanced stage of chanting the Hare Krishna mantra. One first has to concentrate on the hearing stage. In other places Prabhupada indicates that we should not overemphasize seeing, because it is only one of the senses and we should concentrate on hearing. But here he points out that hearing leads to seeing. In fact, he says, it will happen early in the chanting of the Hare Krishna. Of course, the arca-vigraha or Deity of Krishna gives us the chance to see the Lord, while we are chanting. But can see the original form of chanting Hare Krishna as a progressive stage in chanting the Hare Krishna mantra. From hearing next comes the quality of Krishna, then the form of Krishna and the pastimes of Krishna. Krishna wants us to see His form, and He wants us to be with Him. We should not be disappointed if we can not see Krishna right away, but should have confidence that this is a stage that will occur if we are determined and chant constantly. Seeing Krishna is a result of offenseless chanting which comes by attentive hearing of the transcendental sound vibration.
I slept the night through and woke at 1:30. I chanted my rounds quickly trying to reach the quota before it got too late. By 2:30 A.M. when Narayana came in I have chanted twelve rounds. My mind wondered to other topics and I had difficulty controlling it, I have persisted in the numerical count. From 2:30 to 3:30 A.M. I chanted my remaining rounds up to the sixteen ounds quota and chanted my gayatri mantra. Yesterday I spoke with a devotee who has stopped chanting his rounds. It was disturbing for me to hear this and I tried to encourage him but he was not inclined. At least I have this stage well under control by Krishna's grace, that without fail I chant my sixteen rounds daily. I hear of another devotee who is concentrating and achieving his sixteen rounds daily and that gave me encouragement. In the association of devotees we get encouraged or discouraged by hearing of performance of others. We should help each other by keeping to the standard.
Chanting sixteen rounds is the minimum quota. Our Founder-acarya has set it as low as possible and we should not fail to make it. It only takes about two and a half and we can spare that out of twenty-four.
How come we expect to see Krishna if we do not chant our minimum? The numerical count is only part of the work. The mind must be fixed on the sound vibration. We should live in such a way that many things are not distracting us. When the mind goes off the mantra we should gently bring it back. Japa is a total operation.
You explained your success: "I never compromised with anything which is not spoken by Krishna. Did you mark it or not?" I marked it, Srila Prabhupada and now you are marking me. Please keep me despite my defects, please don't give up in training me.
He lives in his books and in the memories of his disciples, Professor Rochford said. Some devotees dream of him. The GBC says even an uninitiated bhakta can dress the Prabhupada murti. No one is stopping anyone from going to him in his room in Vrndavana except at 7 p.m. on the annual observance of his disappearance. And then it's senior devotees only. (Unless you can squeeze in somehow) I was there, holding the arati flame, standing by his rose-covered bed, blowing the conch in the room packed with his devotees.
And so my dear master, you have gone to your nitya-lila, leaving us here quarreling (thus proving personalism). Sometimes the leaders get together and declare "Now we are cooperating as never before" while others say the leadership is uninspired.
Prabhupada left in 1977, it was what Krishna wanted. I am finding my way to serve you in separation.
This poem anticipates a meeting with a powerful, prestigious preacher but he is kind. You anxious to have the meeting and write it down. And then you talk about your God. And your illness. And you weigh your unwillingness to meet. Here it is:
2.
"Tell me what happened when they met. We are anxious to hear. Anxious to meet. Avoid the meeting you can't. "Stan is anxious. Did they tell a Swami Prabhupada story?
Embrace, of course.
"The main thing is I'm eager to get this down, it doesn't matter what.
"Stan is waiting. He's heard the hero is so popular he's been stopped along the way at various cities and demanded to appear to speak. "He's fun." He has an expert musician with him.
The main thing is to get this done. What about Prabhupada? Is he the center of your heart? We know so much of your advertised headaches and forgive you, but expect you to love and serve the master in your own invalid way, writing. But we've heard sick people become self centered. Your Prabhupada is being carried from India he can sit on the altar here. Can that improve things? Ahh, the lines are filling in. I'll get this in before they interrupt and say, "They're here, they want to see you briefly."
I'ven't got the uniform on exactly right, maybe I should change it and wear a kurta. It's getting warmer. Lord, Lord, the universe is running under His command. Yet He plays in the forest and at the same time sees you are filling this lines from your insect head with your none-accretive worries and agoraphobia and now you are even exaggerating it. 3.
They hugged as a formality. The preacher was on his way to another engagements. And didn't have much time Sten did not have enough stamina for intercourse so the feeling was mutual.
Prabhupada is the center of the relationship. It makes the feelings real. Why is he so eager to get something down in writing? Because that's his form of preaching.
Prabhupada being carried from India refers to a twelve inch murti. The recluse massages and bathes and puts cloths upon this guru everyday. It's a way to make up for not being his life-long permanent servant. You can do it through the murti, massage his head and shoulders and back just as you would do in real life.
He can't go out like the famous preacher because he is ill. But that's no excuse not to meet with a charismatic and be humbled and cheerful as best as you can be.
"Lord, Lord, the universe is running." –
Far beyond the power of those two brothers is the Supreme Lord Who guides and controls all. But He is very personal and bhakta-vatsala and watches closely how the Swami's disciples are doing.
Don't overdue your seclusion and unwillingness to meet. Don't exaggerate it. They may be different in extreme ways but they are both the Swami's cellas and the bond exists between them. One lectures to many and dances and the other stays in his room and write a poem of a meeting. Should Stan feel he is inferior? He takes the introvert advantage and accepts who he is.
I turned at random to Srimad-Bhagavatam Canto One, Chapter 2, text 8:
"Duties [dharma] executed by men, regardless of occupation, are only so much useless labor if they do not provoke attraction for the message of the Supreme Lord." Materialists see their duties only in terms of the senses. Their occupational duties are limited to concentrated and extended selfishness. Concentrated selfishness is centers around the personal body as is seen in the lower animals. Human beings sometimes manifest extended selfishness centered around the family, society, nation and world. But even then they are seeking a higher standard of living for gross bodily comforts. Above them are philosophers and poets or people propagating some –ism with reference with mind and body. Above the mind and body is the spirit soul, without which the mind and body are null and void, but less intelligent people have no information about the needs of the soul.
Without knowing the needs of the soul a person cannot be satisfied performing his occupational duty. Prabhupada gives the example, "Simply by cleaning the cage of the bird one does not satisfy the bird. One must know the needs of the bird himself."
The soul wants to get out of the coverings of the material bondage and attain full freedom. That freedom and satisfaction is found only when he serves and ultimately meets Supreme Personality of Godhead. We have to engage ourselves in the duties that will evoke our dormant love for God. This is done by hearing and chanting, the divine activities of the Lord.
How important it to read Prabhupada's books and hear the science of bhakti and the glorification of the pastimes of the Lord. Without chanting an hearing our work is a waste of time. If we ignore sravanam kirtanam and work to titillate the senses and mind, we find a temporary pleasure (as well as misery), but it will all end with the death of the body. Eternal pleasure only comes in devotional service, which is personal and in relation with the Lord. Being attracted to hearing of his activities and qualities is the real purpose of education. It should be personally developed and spread widely.
Yesterday I wrote something about the time of death. Muktavanya just mentioned something about it to me on the walk. He was somewhat incoherent. He has had two hear death heart-attacks. He said something about the occasion forcing him to sum-up what kind of a devotee he was, and he concluded he wasn't very good. I said it will be up to Krishna's will what happens to us and where we will go after death. I suppose we have a part to play in this, however. We don't just lie passive. We cry out to Krishna to please help us to remember Him and remember Prabhupada. There is that verse in Sri Isopanisad where devotee asks the Lord, krato smara krtam smara – "please remember all that I have done for You." Prabhupada remarks that the Lord doesn't have to be reminded. He knows what we have done. We may pray for mercy, for leniency, for going back to Godhead. Bhagavad-gita tells us whatever we think of at the time of death, we go to that destination. So we definitely have a role to play at the end. We should try to hear Hare Krishna mantra and pray to the spiritual master. Ask to be forgiven for our sins. It's a time for action in the direction of surrender to Krishna, it is a serious time. Try not be pre-occupied with the physical pain that may be attendant with passing out of the body. Here I am giving advice to myself.
In the afternoon I have an appointment to speak with a devotee who has multiple sclerosis. I don't know how I can help her. Do you tell someone like that to think of Krishna, to chant Hare Krishna, to surround themselves with lectures and readings of Krishna and stay in the company of devotees? Do what's possible to keep your consciousness taking shelter of Him, as far as you know Him. Surround yourself with Krishna. Have faith in Him and in the soul, in the best next life. Ask her to master her faith. It is better to have faith than to be faithless. I am preaching to myself and anything I say to her; when you actually see your time running out, that makes it different than thinking about it at an apparent distance. You get more emotional. There is more chance of fear and hopelessness. Weird things, like resentment of God may pop-up. "I'm being treated unfairly. Why is this happening to me?" But there is a chance to improve your consciousness. You can feel closer to Krishna. You can place yourself at His feet. Bhakti-tirtha Maharaja kept on preaching in the positive spirit.
[Srila Prabhupada said:] "We must maintain an ideal institution. Not necessarily for everyone. But there must be such an ideal institution that the most intelligent men can avail themselves." [TKG comments:] These remarks would be well heeded by many of our Godbrothers who, in their zealousness to have everyone accept Krsna consciousness, end up compromising, thus endangering the ideal Society.
Well, it was served last night. Tonight it will be “every man for himself leftovers.”
I’ve been enjoying the high capacity burners of my FiveStar range and, inspired by the tiny eggplant that grew in our pathetic, unfertilized garden, last night’s dinner had a certain standout. The flame roasted nightshades were delicious and very Tuscan/Bengali rustic.
Wrapping the vegetables-particularly the eggplant-in foil and then flaming allows for a steamed flesh with a charred and wilted exterior. No oil required. To make sure everything was well done, I baked the sliced vegetables for about 15 minutes with some salt. After removing from the oven, I drizzled the dish with a light touch of olive oil. Complete heaven.
This made me feel so Bangla.
EMBERS!
21,000 BTU's at work
Okay. Does this make you sing a Violent Femmes song? Because it totally couldn't resist.
Okay. I was just going to include a link to this vid but when I saw the mullet, I had to embed the full hairstyle here. On my blog:
Off the flame, sliced and into a dish with a little salt, pepper and dried Italian herbs.
Baked for about 15 minutes, out of the oven and drizzled with olive oil. Perfetto.
Look! I am not afraid of mixing marble with tomato. Take that!
For anyone out there contemplating marble countertops. So do it! Acid schmacid. It’s stone. Who cares if it doesn’t look stay all shiny guido new like granite? Isn’t that why you like marble anyway?
Chinese cabbage pakoras, pizza rolls & broccoli cheddar soup
Broccoli cheddar soup is out of my family’s normal eating zone. Son wouldn’t try it. He got a bye on that one since I know he is not a cheese fan. Daughter ate half a bowl and then declared she didn’t like it. Husband has yet to taste it, although the leftovers are running out so surely it will be on his menu tonite.
The recipe is from one of Kurma’s cookbooks and is simple and straight forward. I didn’t have a lot of cheese so I used a dash of turmeric and nutritional yeast to amplify the effects of what was in my larder. Also, milk. Ooops. I was all out. Meant to get some, but the boy was home sick so that didn’t happen. I had vanilla scented whey (thankfully it didn’t add any vanilla scent to the finished soup) and blended that with a quarter of a block of tofu to act as my milk sub. I used way more salt, black pepper and hing than the recipe called for, but I do that with most recipes. And parsley. The only herb still growing in my garden is oregano.
My son ate three pizza rolls! The rolls were inspired by my friend Kalindi in NC, who’s version is less bready. I will try to approximate that tonite since I need to have a snack on hand for my soccer team tomorrow.
Today is the 60th birthday of one of my daughter’s teachers, Ms. Kathleen. I really like Ms. Kathleen. She makes the kids eat their lunches, even if they don’t care for something. Not only has my daughter reported this, but these accounts have been confirmed by my son, who also had Ms. Kathleen as a teacher last year.
I like Ms. Kathleen, but what to get the woman who has everything? I mean, she already has the honor of spending 6 hours a day with my child! What more could she need?
Ms. Kathleen gives little hints through her wardrobe about the kind of woman she is. And that kind of woman is rock n’ roll. Boots. Pants that lace. Long hair. Blouses that billow in a peasant-top kind of way. Inside this kindergarten teacher is a real wild child. So I decided to make a spicy peach jam with nearby Georgia peaches to honor both her sugar and her spice.
I flavored the jam with lots of chili and ginger with some garam masala, cinnamon, hing, cumin seed and turmeric thrown in. Oh, and of course, sugar. And salt.
I have no idea if Ms. Kathleen likes her jam on the hot side, but this spread would really compliment grilled tofu, lettuce and tomato on a crusty bread. As shown below, this jam even works with sweet cakes, although I wouldn’t surprise anyone with it. I had a sample with some buckwheat spice cake and, I promise, it wasn’t bad. The sandwich idea is better.
You asked for it. Yes, you! From Moundsville, West Virginia. And here it is. Eggless Banana Cake Donut Recipe. If you are vegan, this is easily veganizeable.
Here are some preliminaries. Fry in ghee. Heat your ghee to 350 degrees. Seriously. Fry a few minutes on either side. Nice with a glaze of powder shoog and water.
Ingredients (mix it up like pasta primavera….okay, that’s a Beastie Boys reference. Nevermind):
Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill for an hour. Roll out dough with some flour on clean work surface and cut with round cutter. Stick your finger in the middle to make a hole! Fry. Cool. Dip in glaze.
We are currently celebrating the Maha-Mantra week at ISKCON Toronto! This festival celebrates the arrival of Srila Prabhupada to the west in 1965. This was a very significant movement as his arrival to the US began the Hare Krishna movement which began at a small storefront in New York and today has grown to numerous temples around the world.
We thought what better way to honour Srila Prabhupada than to watch movies about him and the Hare Krishna movement! Join us this Thursday as we watch a movie about Srila Prabhupada with popcorn and juice and a small surprise :)!
The movie will be played from 6:30pm - 8:00pm and will be in the temple room.
Hope to see you there!
Also, check out how we are doing on our Japa Challenge of collectively chanting 45,000 rounds! (Updated at 5:45pm EST)
Falsification or falsifiability is a theory popularized by Karl Popper. The theory fundamentally asserts that it is logically possible that a statement or theory can be shown false through observation or experiment. In other words, what it means is that if an idea or theory is indeed false, then that falsehood should be demonstrated. Till then, Popper concludes, the particular idea is considered scientifically valid.
This theory broadly falls under the inductive methods of modern testing upon which the entire field of modern science rests. It removes metaphysical aspects of science and keeps it purely physical. Unfortunately, a pure physical approach is dependent upon on machines and our ability to collect data both of which limits true knowledge. Therefore, religious statements or spiritual ideas are not considered scientific because if it is indeed false, then how will I demonstrate it? In a nutshell, this is the theory of falsifiability.
The theory is in existence because as humans we are limited in our abilities to know the truth in its entirety. Limited knowledge can result in false theories. Falsification accounts for this falsehood. Implied in this is that knowledge from a finite source is inherently filled with mistakes or considered "false". To flip this statement, knowledge from an infinite source is not false or perfect.
Krishna is considered the One Supreme Being who is Perfect thus making Him infinite. The Bhagavad Gita was spoken by Krishna and thus perfect. The million dollar question, then becomes, how do I know if Krishna is Perfect?
Serious seekers of truth, at this point, transcend material science & religion to spiritual science & religion based on the unseen and unheard. At this point, knowledge is not "studied externally" but "revealed internally". A serious student, following the guidance of expert master will question his internal consciousness in relation to external experiences. Constant questioning coupled with determined practice is the struggle the seeker has to patiently endure under all circumstances. This struggle for the truth will reveal in time the answer about perfect knowledge versus imperfect. At this point the seeker would have "no doubts" in his vision of the truth.
"True" knowledge away from falsifiable truths can be gained only if one has unflinching faith, constant practice and perseverance. The million dollar question that Krishna is the only Perfect Supreme Being will be revealed in time.
The Governor of California is jogging with his dog along a nature trail. A coyote jumps out and attacks the Governor’s dog, then bites the Governor.
1. The Governor starts to intervene, but reflects upon the movie “Bambi” and then realizes he should stop; the coyote is only doing what is natural.
2. He calls animal control. Animal Control captures the coyote and bills the State $200 testing it for diseases and $500 for relocating it.
3. He calls a veterinarian. The vet collects the dead dog and bills the State $200 testing it for diseases.
4. The Governor goes to hospital and spends $3,500 getting checked for diseases from the coyote and on getting his bite wound bandaged.
5. The running trail gets shut down for 6 months while Fish & Game conducts a $100,000 survey to make sure the area is free of dangerous animals.
6. The Governor spends $50,000 in state funds implementing a “coyote awareness program” for residents of the area.
7. The State Legislature spends $2 million to study how to better treat rabies and how to permanently eradicate the disease throughout the world.
8. The Governor’s security agent is fired for not stopping the attack. State spends $150,000 to hire and train a new agent with additional special training re: the nature of coyotes.
9. PETA protests the coyote’s relocation and files a $5 million suit against the State.

This past Friday we kicked off another year of wisdom for the body, mind, and soul with our Intro session for Bhagavad Gita-In Your Life. We set a template for our discussions this year with the clear idea that not only can the Gita be relevant to our contemporary lives, but it can also take us to a deeper and happier everyday level, where real spiritual wisdom can enter into our thoughts and actions and help us to become the person we want to be.
Curious newcomers and returning friends were welcomed and introduced to the setting of the Gita, and the great personalities, Arjuna and Krishna, at the heart of the discussion. Arjuna is the greatest warrior of his time drawn into an unimaginable situation, having to fight his dearest teachers and family members in a massive civil war. Krishna, as his chariot driver, dear friend, and incarnation of the Divine, has the duty of convincing the naturally reluctant Arjuna to fight.
What does this all mean? Isn't this another example of religious violence gone wrong, gone beyond morals and reason? We explored some of these tricky topics, and asked students to consider that the story of the Gita will reveal something much deeper beyond its challenging surface, setting the stage for next week when we will dive deeper into the crossroads Arjuna finds himself at, and the crossroads we often find ourselves at.

Whether an acquaintance dying of Alzheimers will benefit from her chanting Hare Krsna to him even if the person’s mind and intelligence are destroyed by the disease.

And although he was fully absorbed in chanting the holy name, he was affectionate to the devotees and always tried to help them
