Sri Srimad Gour Govinda Swami Maharaj

In this article, we pose certain commonly asked questions about institutions and spiritual life, with answers from the teachings of Sri Srimad Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja.

Should we accept someone as an authority if they have material attachments and are not situated on the spiritual platform?

We accept because we are in a society. Someone may be GBC of some region of the world, so according to the management system he is authority. But by the spiritual system, unless I am convinced, I cannot accept him as authority. That is up to me. I have independence. It is my choice. As far as the management system goes, I accept him because he is GBC. But as far as spiritual things go, unless I am convinced I cannot accept. “Please excuse me.” Acceptance of someone as a spiritual authority should not be forced or compulsory. That is a principle. For me to accept someone as a spiritual authority my heart must be convinced, because it is based on the desire of the heart. It is not an external thing. It is internal. Acting in that way is not offensive. I am not disregarding him. He is a vaisnava, so I offer him obeisances. We pay obeisances to all vaisnavas, regardless if they are kanistha, madhyama, or whatever. That is etiquette. But accepting someone as spiritual master, that is something else. (Evening darsana, Bhubaneswar, 1990)

Is there any harm in going and hearing from a saintly person outside of the guru’s mission?

My opinion is that Srila Prabhupada will not be happy with these senior devotees going outside of ISKCON. Srila Prabhupada has said that everything is in his books. If you try to understand this, then by the mercy of Srila Prabhupada it will all be made clear to you. It is a fact that if an elevated vaisnava is there, then one should go and take his association. There is no harm in that. But in this case, there is a danger that the discipline in our organization will be adversely affected. If the leaders are going outside of ISKCON, how will we be able to maintain discipline? Srila Prabhupada has formed this society, and this threat to his society will only cause him pain. With this consideration, they should not go. That will only lead to indiscipline in our society.

Two sides are there — philosophical and organizational. On the organizational side, this practice is not good. Therefore, we have this GBC body, which makes so many rules to maintain the discipline of the members of our society. But how will we be able to keep discipline now? No one will listen. “If the leaders are going, why should we listen. We will also go”. This will create only trouble. (Letter dated 3 November 1994)

It is often said that a genuine guru must be a pure devotee. Understanding that, how do we see that today so many persons are accepting the position of guru?

Two sides are there: the spiritual side and the organizational side. This is an organizational matter. Unless they are allowed to accept disciples, the organization will collapse. There will be no cooperation. Only quarrelling and dissension. “Oh, he wants to be guru. All right, you do this thing.” Anyhow, maintain the society. This is an organizational matter. They want to be gurus. They want some position. This is all material and nothing else. They are doing some work for the society. They are general heads, managing the zone. So how else can a worldwide organization be managed? (Evening darsana in Bhubaneswar, 4 July 1992)

In practice there may be many kanistha-adhikari gurus and madhyama-adhikari-gurus. There may also be very very few, if any, uttama-adhikari gurus who willingly decide to step down from that platform to preach. This is what Srila Gour Govinda Maharaja did after having drown for a number of days in deep ecstasy in Mayapur in 1977.

Besides, except ... Ver másfor false pride, nothing would prevent a kanishta or madhyama adhikari guru to accept such an uttama-adhikari pure devotee Guru as his siksa Guru. In that way, he along with all his disciples would be ensured to be liberated some day by following the sat Guru Parampara, the one composed of pure devotees only...

This question will arise gradually more and more, especially when the generation of Srila Prabhupada's disciples passes away, as one will still need to connect with a contemporary pure devotee, a sat Guru, in order to receive personal siksha from him, so as to practice tad viddhi pranipatena pariprasnena sevaya... and become eligible, under his merciful guidance, to go back to Godhead...

To say this is from the teachings of Srila Gour Govinda Swami is incorrect. His lectures, darsans and books published during his prakata lila represent his teachings. Srila Gurudeva rarely accepted evidence from Srila Prabhupada's letters and was opposed to their publication. If he did it was to illustrate a particular point and he would always ... Ver másquote to whom the letter was addressed and taken in context. Most of the "evidence" for the "jiva falls" theorists comes from letters. Using selective quotes to push ones own agenda is mischievous and spoils the rest of the nectar. I can quote many examples where Srila Gurudeva directly told disciples to disobey authorities in order to have instruction from him. Try to understand his mood, and that only comes from personal association.

Thanks for share this nectar. If someone accept Srila Gurudeva as pure devotee, then His instructions must to be accepted. Right now, a lot of devotees want to satisfy Srila Prabhupada doing things that Srila Prabhupada could not accept... Then, this kind of instructions are welcomed for anyone who is giving the life for Srila Prabhupada and His bonafide representant.

On the DVD that accompanies the "Darshan" book BBT made a few years ago, there is a track made by Krsna Prema that is called "The Future is Here". It is about the Panca-tattva installation in Mayapur and the background sound is Srila Gurudev reciting Sad-Goswami-Astaka! We have found a picture that seems to be of Srila Gurudev during the opening of the temple in Vrindavan. I enclose it. It is taken from a video recording of the event that is included in ITV's set of the complete Srila Prabhupada DVD-library.

Thanks Sunniva! If anyone else has any old pictures of Srila Gour Govinda Maharaja that they come across please write us or post them here. (Madhavananda Das)

Srila Gour Govinda Maharaja left his griha when he was 44 years old... He had raised a family and been a teacher and then a school headmaster... He had always been a vaishnava and had always been wearing tilaka on his forehead in the course of his activities. He was taking every opportunity to speak to his pupils about Krishna but was longing for ... Ver másthe day when he could dedicate his whole life to preaching Krishna consciousness... He then travelled all over India, from south to north and had put Vrindavana at the end of his list... He thought: "If I haven't found the Vaishnava Guru who would give me sannyasa by then, Lord Krishna will surely bless me in Vrindavana...". He met many saddhus and Gurus, associated with many a member of the Gaudiya matha... Yet, he had not accepted in the core of his hearty any Vaishnava sannyasi as his Guru yet... So, as he came to Vrindavana, he spend some time there and as usual, as a vanaprastha he was dressed in safron and was begging only once a day for his food, asking for "biksha"... So, as he wandered he saw a temple under construction under the name of "International Society for Krishna Consciousness" and immediately thought of the prediction of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, that the Holy Name would be spread and chanted all over the world. So he became very appreciative of that Vaishnava Guru who had managed to turn western born souls into devotees of Lord Krishna. He then decided to go and visit and ask for "biksha". So, as he entered the next day, he asked for "Biksha" and asked to meet the Vaishnava Guru at the head of this ISKCON Movement. The western devotee who greeted him understood that he was asking for "diksha" and said: "you are very fortunate as our Guru, Srila Prabhupada, is present...". So, he brought him to Srila Prabhupada's secretary who told Prabhupada: "Srila Prabhupada, there is a saddhu who would like to see you", to which Srila Prabhupada immediately answered "Let him in"...

That was the planned meeting arranged by Sri-Sri Radha-Krishna and Sri-Sri Gaura-Nitai... !

I remember reading that the first person he asked in the Krsna Balaram temple in Vrndavan did not want to let in this Indian Sadhu to see Prabhupada because he thought he was protecting Prabhupada.

Anyway Srila Gour Govinda Maharaja looked around on his own until he found the room and then got his way in there.
I also didn't hear that when he was ... Ver mástraveling looking for a Guru that he associated with many Gaudiya math devotees. But it is quite possible.
Not to say that he neccesarily associated with the acaryas at the time though of those maths.
