ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Today's Darsana

26/11/10
"I am only an instrument in the hands of my Spiritual Master. I do not know how far I have got the capacity to carry His order, but I may say that I have a sincere desire to do it" -
Srila Prabhupada, letter dated 1970.

This can be a very nice meditation for those distributing Srila Prabhupada's books on Day-5 of his book marathon.

Let his wise words and the merciful darsana of our beautiful Deities be our inspiration for the day and for many more days to come.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 143

3:46 A.M.
Excerpts from Sri Harinama-cintamani (spoken by Haridasa Thakura to Lord Caitanya, and written by Bhaktivinoda Thakura):
Namabhasa, or the unclarified Name.
Lord Caitanya takes the role of the inquiring student and asks Haridasa Thakura to explain about namabhasa. The Lord gives the example that the sunshine is covered by clouds. The sun is too big to actually be covered by any cloud, but the jiva may take a position where he cannot see the sun. An example of this is that a person is confused about the supremacy of Krishna. He doesn’t know that the jiva is spiritual and that he remains in ignorance.
Haridasa Thakura is very happy that Lord Caitanya wants him to speak about namabhasa. He says that, “The Lord understands everything fully, but He wants me to speak, and that is my great fortune.” The items that one has to be aware of are: the spiritual nature of the holy name; the Lord’s supremacy over all; the demigods’ position as the Lord’s servitors; the jiva’s transcendental nature; and maya as the covering of the jiva. One has to be aware of these things in order to be free from ignorance. As long as the jiva is not firmly established in the knowledge of sambandha-tattva, or the correct understanding of the relationship between God, His energies, and the jiva, he will continue to chant in the namabhasa stage. When the jiva takes full shelter of a bona-fide spiritual master he becomes expert in executing devotional service under his guru’s guidance; then gradually the clouds and mist are dispersed.
There are three anarthas to be avoided. One is called asat-trsna, which means thirsting after desires for things not related to Lord Krishna, or craving for material gains. Another anartha is called hrdaya-durbalyam, or propensities of the heart and mind that arise from a condition of spiritual weakness. And the third anartha is aparadha, or offenses. These are the three anarthas that form a cloud that hides the sun of the holy name.
At Lord Caitanya’s bidding, Haridasa Thakura is explaining these things in a technical and systematic way. They are best understood with the Sanskrit terminology that defines them. And then one has to actually work to eliminate the anarthas and come to the higher stages. Step by step, Haridasa Thakura will speak of the offenses in chanting and tell briefly how they can be overcome.
This morning I woke about 12:30 and got up to chant. I did not have any pain and was able to chant quickly. I thought of the subject matters of Harinama-cintamani but found it difficult to understand them all technically. The book is very analytical, and one has to study it scrutinizingly. At least I understand the basic points about the need to chant with attention and without material desires. I am aware that there are many things that can obfuscate or get in the way of pure chanting. One has to realize his relationship with Krishna and expose himself to the sun of the rays of the holy name. As I chanted I did not do so in the perfect stage, and so I will carefully read each of the offenses and the anatomy of their debilitation of perfect chanting. Then I will try to take the tips, even if they are not fully developed, on how to avoid the offenses. This morning my chanting, as usual, concentrated on getting through the quota and staying awake. I was able to do both of these things and chanted sixteen rounds before 3:45 A.M.
Harinama-cintamani is difficult
to understand. It is filled with
Sanskrit terminology and the
obstacles and the progression
throughout the different stages of chanting.
If you just allow Haridasa
Thakura to teach you, you
can follow the general
instructions. It’s a handbook
for enlightenment in harinama.
Today I’ve followed the simple
commands, and while not
grasping all the technical points,
I made progress in chanting
in the clearing stage. It is
not so impossible if you
read it carefully and repeatedly.
The mist clears with the
expert guidance of the guru.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Balai dasi's wedding

Balai Mataji remembers: April 28, 1968. Srila Prabhupada was in New York and he installed the first Radha Krsna deities and he installed Lord Jaganntha, Srimati Subhadra, Lord Baladeva, and he initiated some devotees and married some devotees and there was a tape that is no longer in existence so I'm going to read some of the transcription that I had at the time. So Srila Prabhupada was marrying me to Advaita, and my mother first said--Srila Prabhupada told her what to say--she said, "My girl was so long under my guidance; now I entrust this girl under your guidance." And Advaita said "I accept this girl for life." And Balai says "I accept you as my husband, to serve you through my whole life." Then Srila Prabhupada said "You are promising before Radha and Krishna so you must take this responsibility. I speak to the husbands especially. According to Vedic principles a woman is always to be given protection. They have no freedom. Women are like children. If you give freedom to a child it means death to them. They are tender, feeble, and weak. People will exploit them. So long as a girl is young she is under the protection of her parents. In India girls don't mix with boys. Then she is handed over to a suitable boy to take charge of her. In old age the husband leaves home and takes sannyasa. There is no question of divorce or separation. If there is any misunderstanding between husband and wife it should be neglected, not taken seriously. Just like if there is fighting between two goats it shoud not be taken seriously; they cannot hurt each other. If there is a thunder sound in the morning it should not be taken seriously; there is no rain. Nobody should go to court. This is the misuse of understanding. No question of divorce. It is lifelong. You are promising before the Supreme Lord Krishna. If you break this promise there will be serious reaction. I am very happy. As a sannyasi I am not to perform marriage ceremonies, but for the benefit of my disciples I am doing it. Please remember your responsibility and be happy and chant Hare Krishna. There is no need of abstinence but don't beget children like cats and dogs. A person in Krishna consciousness must be serious about his position. If you can produce children in Krishna consciousness then you may have hundreds of children; otherwise no children.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: One Hundred Prabhupada Poems

#100
“O Prabhupada, you told Professor Kotovsky he didn’t know real communism. You told us that the Russian professor said, “After death, everything is finished,” thus proving himself less intelligent, like Professor Zahner, who you called “the lowest of mankind” because he blasphemed Krishna as a misleader.
O Prabhupada, I see you as an elderly sannyasi strong to lead the Krishna consciousness movement. You said Lord Caitanya wanted many Indians to take His message out of India, but you were the only one to do it effectively. Everyone should cooperate with you. I wish to do that and help others to do it.
O Prabhupada, you joked with us (“Saraswati, where is Krishna?”), and taught us seriously (there should be a Vedic planetarium), and expressed your candid opinion that America was going to hell. “Don’t mind,” you said, just in case we were still attached to our material country. How could we object when you spoke the truth, cutting our illusion and attachments?
“O Prabhupada, I was there at the end and can attest you were noble all the way, brave and perfect in the act of disappearance from this world. In the last two days you went inside yourself. That was glorious. But up until then was also wonderful, how you preached from your bed encouraging devotees to be ambitious preachers, sending them to Russia, Bangladesh, back to Mayapur despite the gundas—to push on in America against those who would fight us.
“Prabhupada, you honored prasadam slowly and with care, Hari-sauri has told us. We watched you eat, although we were not supposed to, but we wanted to see you doing everything.
“Prabhupada, I pray that Lord Krishna will allow me to go on praising your qualities and deeds in words and to serve you with my own words and deeds and thoughts. We will worship you and guard your temples and your samadhi mandirs.
“O Prabhupada, who kicked out TV and cosmetic makeup and doughnuts and Ravi Shankar, and the comic section of the newspaper, and the whole newspaper, and boring jobs, and illicit sex, and put in their place kirtana, prasadam, the dressing and worshiping of Radha-Krishna, and the challenge to read and distribute rare books, to lecture in the college.
“O Prabhupada, I’m running out of life to praise you. Please give me more inspiration and time, if not in this life then in the next life. Let me tag along, give me some service . . . and please bless all your disciples so that we can truly become the army of pure devotees you envision to deliver the unfortunate souls who are drowning in the Kali-yuga flood.”

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Memories Foggy

Krishna is in the temple, and
He is outdoors in the forest
listening to the prayers of Lord
Brahma. He is slightly bored.
He prefers to be with the gopis.
The girl in the TV serial
was shot three times in the
stomach and ketchup-blood
appeared as she fell to the
bank floor, a good actress.
The boy, or young man
24 years old, fell from
the fourth floor of the building
and broke his bones.
His parents examined his apartment
and found his private
poems. They let him stay
in their house in his
childhood room while
he recovered.
Krishna had not yet appeared
in his life, not even
as a bird. And no mugger appeared
when he went to
the city on crutches to
visit his friend.
He was lucky because
it wasn’t a year from then that he
met his spiritual master.
His heels had healed.
He didn’t know the pain
would return when he
grew older, and the tendon would
stretch out of shape
and he couldn’t walk properly.
But Krishna was in his
life for good. He was lucky, the luck of
the Irish—to have a
bona-fide spiritual master
and big red beads
for chanting the Hare
Krishna mantra. He
was sent to Boston
alone to start a
center.
He went alone and wasn’t
very bold, but he maintained
the center until they
sent some help, and they went
out chanting on the Boston
Commons on Sunday.
Some of the crowd taunted,
some of them listened oddly,
a few even joined
and got initiated.
They were some of the best
years of his life,
serving the Vaisnava.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Free Write

I turned at random to Srimad-Bhagavatam, Canto 3, chapter 28, text 36:
“Thus situated in the highest transcendental stage, the mind ceases from all material reaction and becomes situated in its own glory, transcendental to all material conceptions of happiness and distress. At that time the yogi realizes the truth of his relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He discovers that pleasure and pain as well as their interactions, which he attributed to his own self, are actually due to the false ego, which is a product of ignorance.”
“When the mind is dovetailed to act according to the desire of the Lord, one has attained the transcendental stage. The desire to lord it over material nature is the cause of ignorance, and when that desire is completely extinguished and the desires are dovetailed with those of the Supreme Lord, one has reached the perfectional stage. . . . Realization necessarily indicates individuality. In the perfectional, liberated stage, there is actual realization. . . . In the Supreme Lord there is nothing but happiness. The Lord is by nature full of transcendental happiness. In the liberated stage, oneness with the Supreme Lord means that one has no realization other than happiness. But the individual still exists.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam, Canto 3, chapter 28, text 36, purport)
“Because he has achieved his real identity, the perfectly realized soul has no conception of how the material body is moving or acting, just as an intoxicated person cannot understand whether or not he has clothing on his body.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam, Canto 3, chapter 28, text 37)
One has to fix his mind on the Supreme Personality of Godhead constantly. This is confirmed in Brahma-samhita. When one has anointed his eyes with the love of Godhead, he always sees the Supreme Personality of Godhead within his heart. The form of Vishnu is the highest identity and is always visible to sages and saintly persons. The process of meditating on the form of the Lord within and the process of chanting the names of the Lord are the same. The only difference is that hearing and fixing the mind on the pastimes of the Lord is easier than visualizing the form of the Lord. Especially in this age, as soon as one tries to visualize the Lord within, the mind is interrupted. Hearing the pastimes of the Lord includes applying the mind, and it is recommended by Lord Caitanya. Chanting the holy names is the most recommended process.
When Brahma had finished his prayers, Krishna gave him a signal he could leave and go back to his abode. Then Krishna immediately returned to His activities where He had left them off a year ago. He went to the lunch spot where all the boys were cheerfully waiting for Him. It seemed to them that only a moment had passed since Krishna’s disappearance, and they had no memory of being put into yoga-nidra in the cave by Brahma. They were amused that Krishna seemed to be in such a hurry to rejoin them. “Don’t worry,” they laughed, “we haven’t eaten a morsel without You.” They all sat together and began to eat their lunch with joking and happy conversation. Krishna then herded the calves and returned to the village with the boys. On the way they passed the corpse of the Aghasura demon. Theyt enojoyed the sights of Govardhana, which supplied them with colored dyes with which they decorated their bodies.  The gopis were poised at their homes, thrilled to get a sight of Krishna returning home. When the boys reached their homes they began telling their mothers how Krishna had killed a gigantic serpent that day. They did not know that a year had passed since the killing of Aghasura.
Maharaja Pariksit then had a question for Sukadeva Goswami. He asked him how come the parents had increased their love for their children during the year in which Krishna had taken their places in His expanded forms, and how come the cows were so affectionate to their calves during that time. Sukadeva began replying by saying the dearest object for each person is his own self. If in danger, a person first tries to save himself and then tends to others. If you are spiritually advanced, you know that your body is dear to you because the soul, the real self, is within the body. Persons with further transcendental knowledge know that the eternal self is a product of the supreme self. And the Supersoul is an expansion of Krishna. Therefore, Krishna is the all-attractive divine Self and the Cause of all causes.  It is because of Krishna that we have attraction for anything in the world. His very name means “all-attractive.” In this way, Sukadeva Goswami explained Krishna consciousness to Maharaja Pariksit.  He even recited the prayers of Lord Brahma. These descriptions of Krishna’s pastimes with His cowherd boys, His sitting on the bank of the Yamuna with them, and Brahma’s prayers are all transcendental subject matters. Anyone who hears, recites or chants them gets all his spiritual desires fulfilled.

Rupa Madhurya das, TX, USA: KuliMela 2009 - Main Movie

In the ancient Sanskrit language, Kuli refers to a member of a community. Mela means a festive gathering. Combined, "Kuli Mela" transforms into "a Celebration of Community."
The year 2009 marked the 20th Anniversary of the Los Angeles Gurukuli Reunion, an annual gathering of second-generation Hare Krishnas (known informally as Gurukulis, or Kulis).
Throughout this five-day festival, over one thousand Vaishnavas from around the world came together in an amazing cultural experience-called KulimeLA-to share, reflect, and appreciate what the Gurukulis have accomplished over the past 20 years.
This film offers a look at the events of the festival, including the performances at the Ford Theater, the many seminars, and the LA Rathayatra.

Japa Group: It Must Be Done Often And Regularly

Accepting things favorable to chanting and avoiding things unfavorable is the first item in saranagati, or surrender. Constant chanting means it must be done often and regularly. Srila Prabhupada had given us a minimum of sixteen rounds, but he said that we should do sixteen rounds on the beads and innumerable rounds off the beads.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Happy Thanksgiving

“Such knowledge in Krsna consciousness can be achieved by a faithful person who believes firmly in Krsna. One is called a faithful man who thinks that simply by acting in Krsna consciousness he can attain the highest perfection. This faith is attained by the discharge of devotional service, and by chanting Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, which cleanses one’s heart of all material dirt.”
Bhagavad Gita 4.39
“Prayer is then the first and most important step. All through the life of faith one must resort constantly to prayer, because faith is not simply a gift which we receive once for all in our first act of belief. Every new development of faith,  every new increment of supernatural light, even though we may earnestly working to acquire it, remains a pure gift of God.”
Thomas Merton, Life and Holiness (New York: Image, 1963). p. 81. Prayer is therefore the very heart of the life of faith.

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Vegan Cranberry Shortbread Bars : Recipe

Thanksgiving Dessert : Cranberry Shortbread Bars
I was so enchanted by yesterday’s post on The Kitchn for Cranberry Curd Bars that I *had to* attempt a veganized version. Check out that post and just try to tell me those pictures are not magical. Makes me want to dance The Nutcracker or something. Great dessert for Thanksgiving, even better for Christmas.
The challenge though would be the 8 eggs in the recipe. When you get into numbers like that, you just have to know that what you come up with is going to be a variation on a theme and not an exact replica.
*I used too much shortbread, so I am halving my recipe here, which is coincidentally super similar to The Kitchn recipe.
*I didn’t do the jelly technique for the cranberry like the original recipe. Too time consuming for an 8 month pregnant mom of 2 and to be honest, I could use the fiber.
*Have you seen the price of walnuts lately? Ridiculous. Used to be one of the cheaper nuts, now it is way high. I don’t know if this is a seasonal hike or what, but I used almonds and my shortbread is no worse for the crunch.
*Coconut oil. I would have used Earth Balance Buttery Sticks but I only buy it for specific projects and I did that this weekend and now it is all gone. This is not the first time I’ve used coconut oil for vegan baking (cookies and pie crusts) and it works just fine in my opinion. And, I think if you buy it in larger quantities, it is most likely cheaper than the Buttery Sticks. But it doesn’t taste buttery, so your call.
*I don’t refrigerate the crust before baking. What’s that about anyway?
Okay. On to the specifics.
9 x 13 baking pan (I love parchment paper but didn’t use any with this recipe)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
1 c flour
1 c ground nuts (walnuts, almonds, pecans, etc.)
1/2 c coconut oil
1 tspn lemon juice
1/2 tspn salt
Combine in food processor (make sure nuts ground first). Press into baking pan and bake for 20-25 minutes.
While the crust is in the oven, make your cranberry topping, which will not be like curd.
3 cups fresh cranberries, minced in food processor
1 cup sugar
2 TBSP lemon juice
pinch salt
1/4 tspn cardamon
1/2 tspn cinnamon
1 can (13.6 oz) coconut milk
1/4 cup arrowroot powder (or cornstarch)
Combine ingredients in a wide bottomed pot with tallish sides. Cook over medium heat, whisking more frequently as cooking progresses–approximately 15 minutes total. Cooking is done when cranberry concoction is bubbling, spitting at you and pulling away from bottom of pan.
When shortbread is done baking in oven, gently spread cranberry mixture on top. Return to oven for approximately 15-20 minutes. Remove from oven, cool. When cooled, refrigerate and then cut.
Garnish with powdered sugar, which will melt into cranberry, creating sweet glaze.
To be cut...

Maddy Jean-claude Durr, New Govardhana, AU: Winter Life Settling In and Narottama's Arrival

It was a typical day in the Castle.  Down and up the stairs for the purifying shower – the hot water on the brink but not enough to break any man’s moral.  I looked over at my wall, posted up with countless sheets of paper – slokas and reading schedules – trying to fill in that last remaining slot of free time in the day (the time it take for my tilaka to dry).  There is a sound of rolling thunder, as we rush to mangala arati; the sound is occasionally broken by loud thuds, as people leap down whole staircases, displaying ninja-like agility.
I had to take a break out of my usual japa session for some scheduled reading.  I was starting to adopt the student lifestyle, flipping days upside-down to make deadlines.  The advantage of studying Bhakti Sastri and Bhakti Vaibhava was that all my deadlines were devotional deadlines, in the sense that it was not difficult to instantly link the subject matter with Krsna (as opposed to academic courses, which one must appreciate through the garb of “dovetailing” in Krsna consciousness).
We crammed into the Bhakti Sastri classroom, after the morning program, for Bhakti Vaibhava (as you can see, the Bhakti Sastri classroom can be more accurately described as a regular classroom but it has somehow earned its name in relation to Bhakti Sastri, which may or may not take place in its vicinity).  A stack of first year and second year students packed the classroom full and HH Yadunandana Swami systematically broke down the verses for us, leading into lively discussion.
Today was special for a few reasons; the first obvious reason was that Narottama was coming.  It was almost like a legend now: “Narottama is coming”, a boy who seemed confident that he was coming to the college but seemed to have endless, delayed visa issues (or so the folk tale went).  Today was the actual day.  This event was slightly more significant for me personally because he was going to be my roommate.  Jaya Krsna Prabhu snuck into the Bhakti Vaibhava class for a moment to inform me of some arrangements that I would need to make – breakfast for Narottama and his parents, and Narottama’s bed.  “Bed?!” I thought to myself; we’ve never had beds in our room (although all the other rooms have them fitted in).
Manoj and I arranged breakfast, only to find that someone else also organized breakfast.  Then Manoj and I moved the bed, from the College building across the street, to the Castle.  It took a few trips and the air was nippy.  Then there was the Climb – bed pieces and over seven flights of stairs, wriggled with narrow corridors.
By the time I had organized the bedding, which now filled up a sizable portion of our room, I went down to the reception to wait for our new guests.  I quickly noticed that their arranged breakfasts (both our arrangement and the other separate arrangements) were missing (if not completely missing, partly missing).  It looked like I was expected to greet people without their scheduled breakfast, nor did the arranged meeting time seem to stick either.  My ears were burning for the sound of rolling wheels on gravel and I was anxious to find some competent person to find the robbed prasadam.
Eventually I found out that I had been bypassed – the meals had been moved to the guest house (while I was trotting around the Castle somewhere) and the car had taken another road, directly to the guest house.  I popped over and gave their room a little knock.  I talked to Krsna Kesava Prabhu (Narottama’s father) at their door and offered to give them a little tour of the Castle (as if I knew the place well enough already).
We rushed into the Castle, away from the cold and I began to show them around.  It was nice to show people the Castle so you could remind yourself of your fortune.  In my writing and daily routine I am guilty of contempt, produced from familiarity, and I feel there is no justice of appreciation for my current scenic and spiritual residence.  The paintings of Krsna and His devotees decorated the walls, under the high ceilings, and the Castle’s elegance was very easy to appreciate through others’ eyes.  It was very easy for our guests to notice the excessive amount of stairs, as I took them to the turret tower for the view.  Finally I ended the tour with a tour of kitchens and other prasadam related areas, before taking them over to the College buildings.
I exited tour mode for Bhakti Sastri mode (actually in the Bhakti Sastri classroom – believe it or not).  Crowds of new students were always joining our class so the numbers constantly chopped and changed (due to so many people who had “half” completed or “partly” completed Bhakti Sastri now participating in certain pieces of it with us, all at different times).  HH Yadunandana Swami had us again, bringing out some vibrant points from the Sri Isopanisad.
By the end of the night, when the fight for hot milk had been lost (a rare failure on my part), I was informed by Manoj that there was snow outside.  We walked out in the dark but I could barely see anything, what to speak of believing that it was true.  I went again when it picked up and could finally appreciate it.  I had never been in snow so it was my first experience.  It looked like cotton wool in the air, mixed with ice-cream, but as it came closer, its icy particles were visible.  It was wet and still slightly warm on the ground so the snow dissolved into nothing on impact.  It was my first experience but I knew to expect much more, decorating the countryside soon enough.  I could now safely say that summer life was over in Radhadesh and that winter life was soon to sink in.

The Service Attitude

Atlanta/Toronto

The middle-aged good-looking man in front of us turned around and asked about our yoga clothes. Dhruva, my monk assistant, and I were standing in line at the Buenos Aires Airport when this Antarctica tourist from Philadelphia struck the curious question. When we told him of our Krishna Consciousness he identified himself as a former follower of Yoga Amrta Desai.

"Oh, yes," I said, "Our guru, Srila Prabhupada, had a gracious meeting with him in the 70's." I remarked to Dhruva how this yogi truly appreciated Prabhupada's bringing bhakti (devotional service) to the west.

We ran into our new friend again at the Atlanta airport only to share space in another line-up. Here it was a curse. Although boasting to have a huge facility the service was weak. The line-ups were long and slow and our boarding time for Canada was fast approaching and very little effort was made to help us despite appeals to the service people. I bless those people though, for their tardiness. I learned from them what not to do when dealing with the public. Since I'm a member of an organization I serve the public and sometimes become embarrassed with the lack of quality in service. Service is the thing, so we are taught by our guru.

By evening time after settling down back home, I decided for a much needed walk. Leaving Roxborough St. to cross Yonge St. a woman with three children approached me.

"I used to see you guys in Vancouver. Do you need something? Donations? Is the church looking after you?" I answered her questions letting her know I'm fine and gave her an invite to our Sunday Open House. I was touched by her warmth. Speaking of warm versus cold, another woman walking her dog told me not to mind him as he came for a sniff.

"Oh, don't mind him! Are you warm enough?" as she saw my attire. Perhaps I gave the "poor monk" impression, although the late November weather didn't feel to be its usual knippy self.

Not but five minutes later a van with two adult women (again) demonstrated kindness. "Can we give you a ride somewhere?" was their question. I admit I was floored by the hospitality and this was in a rather snobby neighbourhood.

"No thank you. I'm a monk and I walk every day. You are very kind." They left in smiles.

I learned from this batch of people how to express the service attitude. Now Michael Moore might say that there's a difference between the U.S. and Canada. But I don't necessarily agree. Everyone is good-hearted. Grumpiness sometimes stands in the way.
