Govardhan Realizations July 24, 2010

Govardhan Realizations July 24, 2010

There is a town on the side of Govardhan called Aniyor. In Hindi this means: “give me more.” The story behind this name is quite interesting.

When the residents of Vraja were offering Govardhan mountains of food during the annakuta ceremony, Govardhan assumed a gigantic form and demanded more and more foodstuff. He could not be satisfied. Finally the Vrajavasis remembered that Krishna is satisfied with Tulasi leafs and Ganges water, so He was offered Tulasi leafs and the water of the Manasi Ganga (the Ganges manifested from Krishna’s mind. This body of water is located in the present town of Govardhan). He was immediately pacified by this simple offering.

My experience however is that although Krishna is pleased with whatever service we can perform for Him, he is always demanding more and more.

When we first took up Krishna consciousness in this lifetime, we experienced so many deep realizations just by performing a little sadhana bhakti-for example, by eating prasadam. Then if we wanted to continue experiencing realizations quickly we needed to increase our service both in quality and quantity.

Govardhan has certainly made this point with me.

During the 1970’s I started associating with Govardhan by circumambulating Him. The experience was overwhelming. I would dream about Krishna and His associates, as well as having intense dreams of serving Srila Prabhupada.

A few years ago, Govardhan actually allowed me to stay at the ISKCON Palace (which was arranged by the mercy of Srila Tamal Krishna Maharaja). I had never experienced so much happiness and purification before.

Then by Govardhan’s mercy my dear disciples (Mayapur Candra, Campakalata, and Padmavati) moved to Govardhan and invited me to stay with them for extended periods of time. Again my attachment for Govardhan, happiness, and spiritual realization expanded dramatically.

Then Govardhan revealed that He did not bring me there to enjoy, but rather to serve His dear devotees, the Vrajavasis. I gladly accepted this instruction of His.

I contacted Rupa Raghunatha, who is a great saintly devotee dedicated to helping the children of Vraja. I asked him if he would be interested in running a school, doing prasad distribution, and helping the residents of Govardhan. He enthusiastically agreed. So, the Govardhan Sandipani Muni School project was started with the expected groundbreaking in October 2010.

In July of 2010 I went to Govardhan for a spiritual retreat, to deepen my connection with Govardhan. Then Govardhan revealed to me He wanted more from me. During my visit I was thinking: “I am chanting, I am reading, I am serving, and I am assisting Rupa in helping Your dear devotees. What more do You want from me?”

The final day of my visit this was revealed to me.
It was two days before Guru Purnima which draws up to ten million people to Govardhan yearly. That morning I started on my normal parikrama around Govardhan. However there were so many people, circumambulating Govardhan, that I decided to cut short my parikrama.

When I arrived back home (where I am staying), I immediately said to Mayapur and family, “Let’s get going, we are going on harinam.” I felt that Govardhan was speaking through me. I was as if I was a spectator listening to the words of a third person.

Everyone assembled quickly and the four of us walked out to the parikrama path with a mrdanga drum and cartals. Sitting down on the path (we did not bring a blanket, but it seemed natural to sit in the soft Vraja sand), we got ready to chant, but before we could begin, newspaper reporters and photographers came up to us to take picture and interview us. This was definitely a sign from Govardhan.

Then we began to chant the Maha Mantra loudly. The experience of chanting was something that I can not describe in words. It was beyond the experiences that I have had of visiting the holy places while chanting japa. This is the Yuga dharma-Krishna Nama Sankirtana!

I looked up to see a multitude of smiling faces surrounding us. The deep devotion of the Vraja Vasis was clearly manifest to my eyes. I was astounded. Many sat down, closed their eyes and entered into a spiritual trance as they responded to the chanting.

The chanting of Govinda Jaya Jaya Gopala Jaya Jaya Radha Ramana Hari Govinda Jaya Jaya, interspersed with the Hare Krishna Mahamantra brought participation from most of the crowd.

I had never experienced a Hari Nama like this before.

This is what Govardhan was asking of me.

We have the great fortune of being connected to Radharani’s dear devotee Srila Prabhupada, so when we transmit the Holy Names as Prabhupada’s servants, there is something very special in it. This is not because of our own qualification but because of Prabhupada’s position and our being deputized by His Divine Grace. Therefore as servants of Srila Prabhupada we have a very special empowerment and a very special responsibility.

I lamented that I had to leave the next day, but resolved to continue the Harinams when I return to Govardhan in October. In addition we will make book distribution, and prasad distribution part of our program.

In this way Govardhan continues to ask me to do more for Him. Serving His devotees is the best service. I am sure He will make more and more requests of me in the future as He continues to say, Aniyor, Aniyor (“give me more, give me more”)!

Govardhan, the Boss!
