Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: Distribution in Chennai

I had a nice experience distributing books recently at West Mambalam Station Road in Chennai, South India).

A boy was cycling towards me. He was in his early twenties and wore a sleeveless T-shirt and white shorts. He was riding a sporty bicycle. And he wore bright Sri Vaishnava tilak. As he came nearby I showed him the books I had. He said he was interested in reading religious books and has lots of them at home. I explained to him the glories of the Karttik month and why he must read these books. He said he didn't have the cash to buy them at the moment and thought a bit. He then got a bright idea: he would help me sell the books. I agreed, but I first told him to offer a ghee lamp to Lord Damodar and then come to me. He agreed and when he came back to me he got another bright idea.

He said that he will go home and change to traditional dhoti-kurta dress and come. I immediately agreed and sure enough he came back dressed like a Vaishnava. I gave him a couple of small books and a Tamil BTG. As I was showing my books to others, I noticed that he wasn't showing the books and was simply holding them in his hand. I advised him to catch the attention of the people by showing the books. He said that he is waiting for the right man to come and then he will show the books. I told him that such a thing doesn't happen and the person whom you expect to buy the book will not buy and the person who you least expect to buy the books will come forward to buy. He didn't believe me.

The minutes passed by, and the few people he showed the books to had absolutely no interest in the books whatsoever. Ten minutes later an elderly gentleman approached me looking at the books. He appeared to be in his seventies and was wearing a tattered shirt over his dhoti. I showed him the books, and he asked me questions in crisp and clean English. He made a suggestion that ISKCON should have a library like the Ramakrishna Mission where people can read the books without having to buy them. I promised him that I will convey his suggestion to the temple president.

After a little while he was convinced he needed to buy a book and bought one. All the while the boy next to me was observing the exchange, and after the elderly gentleman left he said, "You were right. I never thought that this man would buy the book." He was now fired up, and soon a person came up and bought a BTG from him. He was really pleased that he was able to render some service.

Later on I saw him enthusiastically preach to other boys of his age. By that time it was 8.30 PM, and we all left for the Ashram on KR Koil St. to have dinner prasadam. The youth was happy to meet the devotees and promised to come again.

Earlier one man came to me and took a selection of small books. He said he wanted some other books but was not interested in the Bhagavad Gita as he already had one. We agreed that I would deliver the books to him at his office.

The next day I called him in the morning to ask him if it was OK to meet him and he said yes. Just before I left, he called me again to tell me to bring all the books I have so that he can tell his colleagues too about these wonderful books. I braved the heavy rain and traffic to reach his office in Egmore. There he took a Ramayan and the Krsna book and then called his colleagues. Some of them came forward to buy books. He then suggested I set up a book table for a few hours in the near future and that way everyone in the office will have an opportunity to buy the books. He also wanted a list of the books so that he can forward it to his colleagues in advance so that they will come prepared with the money.

I now understand why some book distributors want to distribute books all the time. The bliss of distributing books is different from the bliss experienced when serving in the temple or from any other service for that matter. I have now realised that spiritual bliss comes in many varieties and this is what makes practicing Krsna consciousness so sweet.

Kurma dasa, AU: A Christmas Meditation

"You have dined, and however scrupulously the slaughterhouse is concealed in the graceful distance of miles, there is complicity." (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

cows:

For even a moderate meat eater, the idea of doing without some sort of meat over Christmas produces a vague sense of guilt and apprehension, as though they were breaking an ancient taboo. Why is this, and from where does this idea originate?

The pre-occupation with and consumption of large quantities of flesh foods at Christmas time can be traced back to the medieval European church. In "The Heretic's Feast - A History of Vegetarianism"

, Colin Spencer points out:

"From November to April there was no pasture; the little hay that could be cut had to be saved for the oxen, the war horses, and the breeding stock. The slaughter of hogs began in September, while cattle were killed on The Feast of St. Martin, Martinmas.

On this day, as it could not be preserved, the offal was cooked and eaten, so chitterlings, tripe, black puddings, pasties of liver, and dishes of kidneys were all consumed with great gusto, in the knowledge that such dishes in such profusion would not be available for another year.

This feast and annual slaughter was called Yule. The Church managed to move the date towards Christmas, and unite the two."

The spirit of 'good will to all men', the catch-cry of all pious folk does not extend to the millions of unfortunate chickens, pigs, cows and sheep that are victims of the gastronomic carnage that is called Christmas.

And still, for all the adoration of meat that pervades the Christmas season, the majority of meat-eaters would prefer to remain ignorant of the reality of flesh foods. They would still rather keep their illusion and continue to think of meat as an inert substance. Think again.

A Trail Proposal

Port Royal, Pennsylvania

I have been trying to talk up a subtle storm to several members of the community, about establishing an exciting japa trail for in and around the property. In this approximate 350 acre plot of land you have a river, a creek, hills, flatlands, forests and fields. You have the Appalachian Mountain backdrop. There’s also an historic covered bridge and quiet winding roads graced with charming country homes that would be inclusive of a well planned trail.

Stave Priya, the young farmhand and I walked a portion of what could be a real attraction for pilgrims from the city. You could hold walking workshops and invite locals to come see nature from another perspective. The trail would be ideal for helping to reduce pounds of unwanted flesh. Stava had not yet been through the covered bridge so here was an opportunity. I suggested to plant a field of coniferous trees to add some diversity to the plant residents at the farm as long as ecology freaks don’t mind.

The trail can be designed for health and overall welfare especially used for the japa meditation aspect. One of the biggest attractions of the trail would be a visit to the temple, let’s not forget the barn and the cows.

The countryside here is stunning. “So, why not?” I asked myself. I asked Stava. A well maintained japa walking trail – forever! Little does he know that I’ve tried to stir up a trail hype in West Virginia community and the BC Saranagati. Why not dot the map with trails?

Prepare!

Carlisle, Pennsylvania

Kids stay home from school today even though Thanksgiving is behind us. Hunting season has begun in Pennsylvania. The Amish get little involved in the cultural activity, so I’ve been told. The Krishnas abstain altogether.
Sounds of shot -guns can be heard from all directions so it is advisable to avoid a forest walk. I had made it a point to stick to the roads this morning for my daily trek.

The major chunk of today took me away from pastures and trees altogether. The peaceful plane was downtown. In the heart of university town, Carlisle, is an old movie house converted into a theatre. One small theatre company which we have unofficially labeled as “Swami Productions” held a 12 hour stint on stage for the filming of our comedy “Lonely People”. The subject is to do with the topic loneliness as a form of depression.

Time sped by so quickly. All my three actors bore some kind of illness, fever and what not, but like troopers, patience & tolerance prevailed. We all come prepared psychologically for the long haul. You will find that sufficient preparedness will always lay out certain expectations. It brings about realistic acceptance.
Let’s say a group of us were to go on a safari expedition totally unprepared through the meanest of Amazon jungle where you find deadly biting bugs, thick and prickly bushes, streams of man-eating piranhas, prowling jaguars, poisonous creatures and pythons, swamps and the most intense heat and humidity. How long would you last? But with a well informed scenario you have a better chance to deal with a tough situation.

In spiritual circles there are often discussions about preparedness for life and death. These topics of “getting ready” are found in the books we call Sastras, spiritual texts.

On that note I would like to announce the parting of a dear soul and friend, Godbrother Dadhi Harta from Saranagati British Columbia. He passed away from a heart attack over the weekend. He was a very, very gentle soul. We are going to miss him.

ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Snana Yatra - Sunday 26 December

snana
This year's Snana Yatra will be celebrated once again on Boxing Day, Sunday 26 December.

The program will start at 10am, with arati and kirtana at 12.30pm and the highlight of the day:

Panihati auction at 2pm.

What is so special about this celebration is that SS Jaganatha, Baladeva and Subhadra Mayi mercifully come off the altar and allow all of Their devotees to perform abhishek to Them!

As a result of such an extended bathing session, They perform Their transcendental pastime of catching a cold and retrieve to Their private quarters to recuperate for 2 weeks.

The Snana Yatra program will conclude with the feast at 4pm which will then lead us into the Sunday Feast program to conclude this day of festivity with joy and laughter.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: not to sit with their back to the Deities

On numerous occasions during your lecture(s), you stopped the class to tell someone not to sit with their back to the Deities, and if we were all turned towards the Deities, you made it clear not to sit with our backs to you. Therefore, we learned to sit sideways, so as to not make obvious offences in the temple. I am putting this in my offering to you because I feel this is something that has been lost with time, and you made a great impression on me that it was important to you.

Excerpts from Sri Harinama Cintamani (spoken by Haridasa Thakura to Lord Caitanya and written by Bhaktivinoda Thakura):
Chaya-namabhasa can lead to suddha-nama:

“If the chaya-namabhasa chanter is not contaminated by atheistic concepts, then he has a good chance. His position is that he is ignorant about the potency of the holy name, but it is the inherent nature of the holy name to impregnate that knowledge into the chanter’s heart. For example, the sun may not be visible when the sky is cloudy, but once the clouds are dispersed, the sun shines through in full glory. The chanter gains great benefit from taking shelter of a bona fide spiritual master, and in a short time is able to attain the pure name and krishna-prema.”

Chaya-namabhasa is the “faint, shadowy name.” As a pure Vaisnava is compassionate, he respects a neophyte devotee who is not contaminated by the Mayavadi philosophy. The elevated Vaisnava considers such neophytes to be innocent always, and he showers mercy on them. This will resuscitate the small spark of the devotees, and they will develop their quality of namabhasa.

Devotees must not associate with Mayavadis:

Some people say that any chanting of the holy name is equally benefit. They do not make a distinction between the person who is chanting. But this is not a fact. The Mayavadis are like a serpent who touches milk. Milk touched by the lips of a serpent causes poisonous effects. Although the holy name is absolute, hearing from the nondevotee can mislead one and hold him up in his progress of chanting the holy names. Haridasa Thakura prays to Lord Caitanya to please bless him so that he can reject bad association and take shelter at the Lord’s lotus feet. There is no other way.

I woke up and got out of bed a little after twelve midnight today. My chanting was slow, and by 3:30 A.M. I had only chanted 12 rounds. But it was a little mysterious why this was so, since I felt alert and attentive in chanting. Slow is not necessarily bad if you are actually paying attention to the names. As I chanted I thought of the excerpts from today’s Harinama Cintamani, the quality of chaya-namabhasa, which is beneficial, and the deadly effect of receiving the holy name from the Mayavadi. One has to be very careful in where he takes the holy name from, and he must protect his faithfulness and not underestimate it.

If the chaya-namabhasa chanter
is not contaminated by atheistic concepts
he has a good chance. He chants in
the faint shadow of the name.
His chanting shines through
the clouds and shines
in full glory. Taking shelter
of the pure spiritual master
he is soon able to chant the pure name.
But one must never associate
with the Mayavadis even
if he is distributing the so-
called the holy name.
Those who disregard this advice
suffer without relief.
We pray to be spared from the association of the
Mayavadi and take shelter
at Krishna’s lotus feet.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Prabhupada Meditations

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Excerpt #6:

“An active student of Srila Prabhupada may see my attempts as idle, but what can I say? It is not idle. I am fighting for the survival of dear memories, and refusing to allow my everyday consciousness to deteriorate into a watered-down following of Srila Prabhupada. Of course, Prabhupada can be very heavy as the breaker of illusion. So when I say I want to remember him, I want to open myself up to that too.

“We often think, ‘What would Prabhupada do or say in a situation like this?’ And as the Bhaktivedanta Archives surprise us with all of Srila Prabhupada’s spoken and written words, we can push a computer button and bring up what he said on ‘walking in the woods,” “when the body feels cold,’ ‘nailbiting,’– almost anything. But even Prabhupada’s instructions have to be applied (as they were by him) according to time, place and person. We must ponder on the meaning.  If Prabhupada said that, ‘Woodland walks are all right provided you think of Krishna,’ then should we justify spending all our time in the woods? If we find a statement by Prabhupada that woods walking is useless, should we give it up for all time? We have to think and feel what he meant—and what it means to us.

We want to surrender to his order. That means becoming disciplined by him; don’t invent or interpret, accept the parampara: krishnas tu bhagavan svayam. ‘If there’s no surrendering,’ Prabhupada says, ‘then there is no beginning even, what to speak of advancement. Discipline means . . .  one who accepts discipline. As soon as the discipline is broken, then everything is lost.’ (Conversation, Melbourne, July 1, 1974)

But surrender also means love. You don’t just posit yourself like a ‘surrendered’ stone at your guru’s lotus feet. You grow as a person and live for him and his mission. You attain your maturity and you turn to Krishna within, you try your best—and it’s all offered to guru and Krishna. Your offering should be thoughtful, painstaking—a garland of hand-picked wildflowers, an artistically arranged plate of fruits, an innovative way to preach. ‘Whatever you do, do it for Me.’ And as you work to make a thoughtful project on His behalf, you always stand ready to be told, ‘That’s wrong, do it over.’

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: A Poem

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

1.
I sing of Krishna the fountainhead,
the cause of all causes . . .
but what about the bad and
perverted—do they
come from Him? They have come to compete:
‘Why should Krishna be glorified?
I am as good as Krishna.’
They sit together,
eating their turkeys.

They are nothing compared to Him.
Krishna’s saints and devotees,
great and low—they exist
in the spiritual world.

They are bare-chested and
painted with the letters of
their football team.
The half-time commentator on television tells who is the
best quarterback and
why he is enmeshed
in a scandal.

The commercials cost thousands of dollars.
“Go to the Super Bowl
game for the rest of your life
on a Visa card.”
But how long will you live?

“‘Round Midnight” is mixed in.
I like the poems of W. C. Williams and
his praising Henry Miller.

This is a mingle at 6:00 A.M.
He suggested I try
to write poems later
after breakfast, since 1:30 A.M.,
chanting and writing—I’ll be too tired
to write for the poem.
I won’t be able to keep my eyes open.
But I think it’s okay.
You can enter your last gasp.

2.
I sing of Krishna the fountainhead
the cause of all causes, and they ask
about the cruelty and torture.
You sit writing in your socks in early
hours in your comfortable chair.
Why is there so much envy
and violence and killing?
Why so much trivia
you watch on TV? Why eat cashews
when you’ve already digested enough?
Krishna has made a world of mystery,
and you better just be quiet
and ask for His mercy.
Avoid the sin if you can,
the pressure of falling.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Free Write

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

So it’s settled that Bhakti-rasa and Kirtida will be staying here for three months. I was a bit taken-aback by it because I hadn’t been asked permission, and I didn’t know if Saci-suta had been asked permission. But this morning he told me he had been asked permission. Baladeva is eager for them to come because Narayana Kavaca is away so many times (to Mexico and India), and Baladeva needs help in running the house and finds it taxing to be all by himself. So Bhakti-rasa will help with cleaning and cooking and caretaking for me. I will have to get accustomed to associating with him, and I can’t associate much with Kirtida-dasi. But Saci remarked this morning that he has heard they are both very nice, and this is true. So I’m at ease about it. C.c. will be coming for a few days, but then he’s renting a car and driving to temples in the Northeast states so he can preach. I will have, more or less, my usual time for seclusion and writing, I think.

But what do you want to write about? I write paraphrases of the books they are reading to me. We have completely finished the Caitanya-bhagavata edition without purports, and we will be starting Srimad-Bhagavatam, First Canto (three volumes), published in India. We want to read it for the special flavor of Prabhupada without editors. Then at the other times of the day, they will read from the Krishna book. We just finished the wives of the yajnic brahmanas going to Krishna in the forest. A high point was the cowherd boys getting rejected by the brahmanas and Krishna smiling to them and telling them, “You can’t expect to be always successful when you go begging.” Then He told them the brahmanas’ wives were nearby, and they would be willing to serve Krishna the feast they had prepared for their husbands’ yajna. The wives go to the forest, and a high point is a description of how Krishna appears in golden garments, twirling a lotus and standing by the cows. The wives say they don’t want to return home because their husbands have rejected them. Krishna says, “Go home and you’ll find that your husbands will gladly accept you. Anyone who is a devotee of Mine is beloved by everyone.” The husbands will gladly accept them. The wives are a little reluctant, but they embrace Krishna in their hearts and return to their homes, where their husbands are very repentant and affectionate towards them. The husbands curse themselves for rejecting Krishna’s gopas. They say it was a trick arranged by one who is capable of everything. They apologize to the cowherd boys.

“Ways of Writing”

There are varieties of ways of writing
and you can choose your method of expression.

The temporarily formal: he frowns his forehead:

“I am concerned,” he says, “and you should be too because
if one word is wrong you
will be walking with that group of friends instead of riding in the car.”

If you hold the book sideways it won’t fit in your hand
or on the bookshelf, and you’ll be stuck. The binding
could crack open, and your pages would spill out.
So in writing and printing
together a book, all care
should be taken at every step.

My sannyasi friend accompanied
his words with a little wink, but
I had heard his words with the utmost
sobriety.

You write what comes to your head. I want to tell stories of the acaryas. But I’d like to write wild original things again. J.S. asked me, am I writing more conservatively parampara now because I was criticized by the GBC, or is it a natural evolution? I replied that it was a little of both. But the GBC scared me with their threats. I received a letter from Gita-nagari dasa, and he wrote (appreciating Japa Transformations): “My feeling was after reading that book, ‘Oh, how nice, my spiritual master has finally returned to a place I can relate to.’ You know me, I don’t care what Kierkegaard said, or St. Theresa of Avila said or any other Christian mystics. I care what Rupa Goswami says (etc.). I like to hear that line of thought (and only that line of thought). This is the real wheat and the other stuff is like chaff. I was really disappointed and confused when you started going to other places, to other sources of wisdom, so much that for my own sanity, I had to back off from the relationship. This is something I, as one of your disciples, really need to hear from you—this stuff and only this stuff.” My interest in the Christian saints turned out to be a temporary thing, but I still am attracted to creative writing, autobiography, poetry, and fantasy, to writing about writing, and free writing. Can I not go back to writing in various ways just because conservative readers don’t like it? I keep room in my daily journal for straight quoting and paraphrasing about japa from the acaryas and my own confessed statements about my japa. I have a section with a photo of Prabhupada, and a reminiscence or reflection about him. But then I have a poem. In the poem I write it in a non-dogmatic way, try to use a personal poetic voice. Then I write a “free write” section. This section is writing what comes to my mind. One sentence follows another without planning, without theme. Of course there is Krishna conscious stuff, but I also use other means to write in. I want to be able to keep that, and if every day I have strictly Krishna conscious things like japa and Prabhupada and Krishna conscious themes and poetry, then I should allow myself more freedom too. Like mentioning that the Rockies shortstop Tulowitzki is getting a three-year contract for 140 million dollars, but New York shortstop Derek Jeter doesn’t like his offered contract, thinks it is too little and may be going to another team. Like W. C. W. saying Rene Char saw so much of suffering that he turned his poems to themes of nature, like Nazim Hazmit writing of the suffering. Like me still trying to find a fresh voice at 71 years old and what I will say on Vyasa-puja day. Say it doesn’t matter much, just take a substantial section from Srimad-Bhagavatam or Caitanya-caritamrta.

We sometimes think of ourselves as being good adjudicators of who is serious in Krishna consciousness, and who is not. Who is pure, or not. Expecting that “More people will leave Krishna consciousness than stay,” we easily become proud of being one of the “privileged few” to remain.

If we do not become very simple servant of Krsna, problems will increase. It will never be solved. If you have got any other desire than to serve Krsna, then the problems will increase. It will never decrease. Therefore bhakti begins, anyabhilasita-sunyam [Brs. 1.1.11]. No other purpose than to serve Krsna. This is only purpose.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Cheesecake recipe with a Message...

Picture
Below is a recipe for Cheesecake as made by Kishori. You can top it off with fresh berries for the ultimate treat.

Ingredients:
1/2 pound of graham or sweet hard biscuits
1/4 cup butter (melted)
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/2 regular sour cream
1 1/2 cans  sweetened condense milk
1 square pack of regular cream cheese
1 pack of strawberries or berries of your choice

Preperation/Cooking:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit
- Grease pie plate with Butter
- Mix biscuits and melted butter together using a hand blender or food processor till cookie crumbs are fine and pressable to bottom and 1/2 of pie plate side
- Mix remaining ingredients (lemon juice, sour cream, sweetened condensed milk, regular cream cheese) together with a hand mixer or the stick blender until is smooth.
- Pour into pie plate
- Bake for 10 minutes
- Let cool for 1/2 an hour outside & then refrigerate overnight or for at least a few hours

Final Touch
- Top it off with berries and Tulsi
- Offer it!
- Feed it to family, friends & devotees...and of course a piece for yourself.

MESSAGE
This cheesecake will taste very yummy if you follow the recipe. Now some may want to SKIP an ingredient or step and then the whole thing gets spoiled. Others may want to SUBSTITUTE an easier or cheaper ingredient and the final product might "look" the same but it will not taste the same.

Perhaps I am not talking about "Cheesecake" any more but try to understand the deeper meaning since in spirtual life what you put "into" the recipe affects the ultimate result.

Hare Krishna!
Jaya Srila Prabhupada!

ISKCON News.com: Hindu Group Stirs a Debate Over Yoga’s Soul

By Hiroko Masuike for The New York Times on 27 Nov 2010

Yoga is practiced by about 15 million people in the United States, for numerous reasons. Religion, for the most part, has nothing to do with it. But a group of Indian-Americans has ignited a surprisingly fierce debate in the gentle world of yoga by mounting a campaign to acquaint Westerners with the faith that it says underlies every single yoga style followed in gyms, ashrams and spas: Hinduism.

Hari Sauri das, Mayapura, IN: Q&As: Ardhangini – the better half of man

Here’s some interesting questions from Nityananda-priya mataji, who lives in Germany:

You have helped me so wonderful in the past with my Forum. Now I have three questions and cannot find a solution. Please forgive me that I dare to ask you:
Q1. SB 6.18.30:
“In the beginning of creation, Lord Brahma, the father of the living entities of the universe, saw that all the living entities were unattached. To increase population, he then created woman from the better half of man’s body, for woman’s behavior carries away a man’s mind.”
What is the best part of man from which the woman was created?
Answer:
I am not expert on this, but from a lecture I heard Srila Prabhupada give in 1976, I would say the best part of a man is his left side, which contains his heart:
Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.7.45-46 — Vrndavana, October 5, 1976
“So according to Vedic culture, if one woman has got son, she is not considered to be widow. Widow means one who hasn’t got husband or husband is dead. So if the husband’s representative is there, so, strictly speaking, she is not widow. So praja-rupena vartate. Again the wife is considered ardhangini. I think in English also it is said, “better half.” Wife is considered half the body. The left hand side half… Perhaps you have seen the picture that Krsna and Radharani, one body. The left-hand side is Radharani, right-hand side is Krsna. Srila Jiva Gosvami has explained this, radha krsna-pranaya-vikrtir hladini-saktir asmad ekatmanav api [Cc. Adi 1.5]. Radha and Krsna, They are one, but for pastimes they have become two. Ekatmanav api bhuvi pura deha-bhedam gatau tau. Again Radha-Krsna united, caitanyakhyam prakatam adhuna tad-dvayam caikyam aptam. So these things are there. So wife is considered better half. Ardhangini.”

Q2. There is an expression, meaning controlled by love: prema vashia or bashia or….?
Answer:
I think you mean “prema vasyata” or “vasyatva“. There are a couple of references where Srila Prabhupada mentions this:
SB 9.11.16
Purport:
Grief in separation exists even in the Absolute, but such feelings of separation in the spiritual world are transcendentally blissful. Such feelings are a sign of tasya prema-vasyatva-svabhava, being under the influence of hladini-sakti and being controlled by love.
SB 10.9.19
Purport:
Yamaraja, the controller of all living entities, fears the order of Krsna, yet Krsna is afraid of His mother’s stick. These contradictions cannot be understood by one who is not a devotee, but a devotee can understand how powerful is unalloyed devotional service to Krsna; it is so powerful that Krsna can be controlled by an unalloyed devotee. This bhrtya-vasyata does not mean that He is under the control of the servant; rather, He is under the control of the servant’s pure love.
Room Conversation With Son (Vrindavan De) — July 5, 1977, Vrndavana
I have now explained how Krsna became subordinate to devotee. (turns on dictaphone, plays back from tape:) “Yamaraja, controller of all living entities, is afraid of the order of Krsna. Still, Krsna is afraid of mother’s stick. This contradictory thing cannot be understood by one who is not devotee. Devotee can understand how much powerful is unalloyed devotional service to Krsna, so much so He can be controlled by such devotee. Bhrtya-vasyata. That means under the control of the servant, but He is under the control of pure love by the servant. In the Bhagavad-gita also, we see, Krsna became the chariot driver of Arjuna. Arjuna is ordering Him, senayor ubhayor madhye ratham sthapaya me acyuta [Bg. 1.21]. Here Krsna has agreed… [break] ‘…my chariot…’ [break] ‘…to execute my order. Place my chariot between the two party soldiers.’ Krsna immediately executed his order. One may argue in this connection that Krsna is also not independent. This is ajnana, ignorance. Krsna is fully independent. When He becomes subordinate to the devotees He is ananda-cinmaya-rasa. Humor of transcendental qualities increases transcendental pleasure. One who worships Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, therefore sometimes desires to be controlled by somebody controller. Nobody else… [break] …pure devotee.” (end of tape playback section) Everyone worships Him as the Supreme, but sometimes He desires, “Somebody will control over.”

Q3. It is said in the SB, that earthly connections are finished after death. But why can you read in the Puranas and SB, that a devotee liberates 14 or 100 generations? Why are all these generations [genealogical tables] mentioned in the 9th Canto, when there is no contact?
Answer:
Finished at death means that the person moves on and takes another birth. They have no recollection of their previous life and its family and friends connection. So in that sense, in a present conscious sense, we have no connection.
However in a karmic sense one’s connection may continue because when we are born in a particular family we become automatically indebted to the forefathers. We inherit social status, we inherit their wealth, we inherit their reputation and what to speak of all the facilities provided by father, mother, grandparents and other friends and relatives etc. This is karmic entanglement. This is ‘paid back’ by the peformance of yajna or samskara. For instance, a son is expected to do the sraddha ceremony. He is called putra which means ‘one who saves his father from hell’
SB 2.7.9
Purport:
Maharaja Prthu, the incarnation of God, descended by the prayer of the brahmanas to rectify the disorders on earth. He produced all kinds of crops. But, at the same time, he performed the duty of a son who delivers his father from hellish conditions. The word putra means one who delivers from hell, called put. That is a worthy son.”

If the children do not perform yajnas to repay their debt to their family and forefathers, they may remain entangled karmically for many births until their debts are expunged.
However, for a devotee, that karmic connection is finished and there are no further obligations to anyone in the karmic circle as soon as devotional service is taken up. But there is no loss because Krsna is so pleased when someone becomes His devotee that he automatically liberates many generations back and forth of that devotee’s ‘family’. Srila Prabhupada uses the example of the government compensating the family of a returning soldier, or the family of a soldier who dies in action. It is a similar idea.

Your humble servant,

Hari-sauri dasa

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: Colgate Accused Of Stealing Thousand-Year Old Toothpaste

By NewsCore for www.myfoxorlando.com on 21 Oct 2010
From ISKCON News

A legal dispute between the U.S. and India over a herbal toothpaste was leaving a bitter aftertaste between the two countries Thursday, with Colgate Palmolive accused of filing a bogus patent.

Colgate, the world’s largest producer of toothpaste, patented a toothcleaning powder in the hope that it would take the multibillion-dollar Indian oral hygiene market by storm.

However, Indian activists claim that the patent is bogus because the ingredients -- including clove oil, camphor, black pepper and spearmint -- have been used for the same purpose for hundreds, “if not thousands,” of years on the subcontinent.

The dispute is likely to become a test case for who owns India’s folk medicines -- a repository potentially worth billions.

The American household goods giant was granted the patent in the U.S. in June for what it claimed was a groundbreaking “red herbal dentifrice.” The patent, the Indian activists allege, is the latest act of “biopiracy” -- whereby Western corporations plunder techniques, plants or genes used in the emerging world for centuries, for commercial profit.

“This toothpowder is classical in origin,” said Devender Triguna, the president of the Association of Manufactures of Ayurvedic Medicines, an Indian body that promotes traditional remedies. It is demanding that the Indian government take legal action against Colgate.

“The ingredients date back to antiquity. They have been used by the common Indian man for thousands of years. So how can it possibly be patented?” Triguna asked.

Colgate did not respond to a request for comment. However, its patent filing argues that the use of red iron oxide, which is less abrasive than ingredients in traditional toothpaste, is new.

The case is the latest to anger India as it becomes increasingly vocal over the alleged pillaging of its ancient knowledge for commercial gain. It is one of 17 nations to form the Group of Like-Minded Megadiverse Countries, an alliance that has accused richer countries of tapping the emerging world’s natural resources for medicines and cosmetics without paying royalties.

India is in the process of creating 34 million webpages to document its ancient medicinal techniques to stop them from being claimed by foreign profiteers.
