Japa Group: Simply By Chanting The Holy Names

I like to remember Srila Prabhupada’s emphasis on the importance of chanting Hare Krishna mantra. When Srila Prabhupada teaches that the topmost stage of God realization can be attained simply by chanting the holy names, we are pleased and convinced. Even though I can’t take up the chanting properly, still it is a solace and inspiration to hear Prabhupada tell us about it.

H.H. Sivarama Swami: It’s All About Me…

Braja Sevaki send this article in response to Bh Adrian’s question about people in ISKCON acting badly:

It’s possibly safe to say that we’re all aware of the poor standards of human dealings that we have most likely experienced, or in truth, that we’ve inflicted on others. The topic leads me to thoughts of superficial relationships and dealings; I admit to being fond of the word ‘superficial,’ as it seems to capture the true failings of our dealings with each other.

No one wants to be accused of being superficial or shallow, two adjectives that literally indicate a lack of depth. According to the Oxford American Dictionary, superficial “suggests too much concern with the surface or obvious aspects of something, and is considered a derogatory term because it connotes a personality that is not genuine or sincere.”

Of the word shallow, the Oxford says it is “even more derogatory because it implies not only a refusal to explore something deeply but an inability to feel, sympathize, or understand. It is unlikely that a shallowperson, in other words, will ever have more than superficial relationships with his or her peers.”

Sounds like it was written for ISKCON, doesn’t it? Sure…and every other society, group, institution, or individual in the world. It is a grave consideration to contemplate that those around us—and even we ourselves—may not be “genuine or sincere.” Dealings are difficult when the one we’re dealing with is lacking in these two qualities. Actually close to impossible. At some point or another, the absence of both will result in mortal blows being inflicted on the dealings or relationship, rendering it useless.

It’s not an insult to speak of someone as being neither genuine nor sincere; Srila Rupa Goswami and Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura both give guidelines for distinguishing the symptoms and characteristics of a devotee who is guided by sincerity and acts in a genuine manner. If we’re intelligent, possessed of basic knowledge, following the teachings of our previous acaryas, and—most importantly—sincere and genuine ourselves, we will find association with the right people.

In terms of the word superficial, the “concern with the surface or obvious aspects of something” is a factor that seems to be most prominent in the breakdown of relationships and the negative dealings between people. That someone is only concerned in the superficial aspects of a situation denotes that they themselves are lacking sincerity or a genuine concern for either the situation or the people involved. How can one apply something that they themselves lack?

But for the spiritualist, there is an added factor: that the deeper problem, without doubt, stems from within themselves. The response to situations they find themselves in, therefore, will not be to blame the other person, to lean on superficialities, to act without a genuine concern for truth or a sincere effort for spiritual solutions, but rather to consider the “it’s all about me” factor. It’s an apparent contradiction in spiritual life to live by such a factor. We’re aiming for selflessness, right? So where does the thought pattern of “it’s all about me” fit in?

It’s not a difficult or deep concept: it’s plain and simple. On the path to spiritual selflessness, we need to remember that every situation that arises is not “for” someone else, nor “because of” someone else, nor “caused by” someone else. No matter how cruel, nasty, offensive, wrong, heavy, hurtful, or dismissive “someone else” is to us, one fact remains: “it’s all about me.”

That means that any situation we find ourselves in is all about how we will respond, how we will react to something we find wrong or bad, how we will turn to Krishna for shelter, how we will treat the person who has been the party bringing these unwanted things before us. It’s honestly all about me. Not in a selfish way, not in an “I’m the centre” way. But in a way that gives us eyes to view everything in the right way: how Krishna wants us to see it.

And taking this approach allows us to view the other person in a neutral and compassionate way. They’re not the “aggressor,” they’re not the “violent offender,” or “wrong party.” They are simply someone that Krishna is using to show us our own faults and weaknesses. Of course, He doesn’t choose an “innocent” person to inflict wrath or pain or violence on us: He allows someone who wants to exert those qualities on others to do so, but He allows us the chance to use the situation as something that is, simply, all about us. In doing so, the result is a genuine compassion for the other party; after all, it is natural for one who is genuine and sincere to feel a deep sympathy for one who is controlled by lower qualities…

Japa Group: Conscious Chanting

It's a situation we all find ourselves in at one time or another....when we are trying to chant with attention but it becomes unconscious or inattentive - like a drone in the background of the mind's many thoughts.

The alternative is to be conscious of the sound of Krsna....to be conscious of each and every syllable and word of the mantra. By doing this we can become unconscious of the mind's ramblings and be fully focused on Krsna in the form of the Holy names.

Let us all try hard to become conscious of our chanting and of the Holy names, and to turn off the mind, at least for the time that we chant our Japa.
