Sastra Dana, San Diego, USA: Journey of Self Discovery

The following is a synopses of actual phone calls received at the BBT office in Los Angeles. They testify the glory of Srila Prabhupada’s books.

Beau M. (Vancouver, WA)

I’m originally from the Los Angeles area but I’m visiting my cousin in Vancouver, Washington, due to the current ecomomic downturn. Several years ago I got a book at the airport in Los Angeles and skimmed through it, but I never took the time to really read it. Now that I have time on my hands I’ve been reading the book, The Journey of Self-Discovery, and I am really impressed with it. Reading The Journey of Self-Discovery makes me feel good. It has opened my eyes to a lot of things and I am now interested to read more books by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupäda. Please send me a BBT catalog.

Antonia G. (Elgin, IL)

I would like to order several copies of the book Coming Back for myself, and to give to friends and family members. I borrowed a copy of Coming Back from an acquaintance of mine who is a healer and I have to return it. When I took the book home my three-year old daughter took the book and said that the child on the cover was her. I’m an avid reader. I keep one hundred books under my bed to read at night. My daughter cannot read as yet but she likes me to read to her from Coming Back. After reading the book I went to a local used-book store and purchased some other BBT books, The Science of Self-Realization and Dharma: The Way of Transcendence, but I especially like Coming Back. I’m very much attracted to the illustration entitled the Cycle of Birth and Death. If there is a poster of this illustration available I would like to order several as well. Please send me a BBT catalog so that I can order more books. Thank you!

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Tolerate, Don't Become Agitated

My dear King, do not be agitated and anxious because your sacrifices have not been properly executed due to providential impediments. Kindly take my words with great respect. We should always remember that if something happens by providential arrangement, we should not be very sorry. The more we try to rectify such reversals, the more we enter into the darkest region of materialistic thought.

PURPORT Sometimes the saintly or very religious person also has to meet with reversals in life. Such incidents should be taken as providential. Although there may be sufficient cause for being unhappy, one should avoid counteracting such reversals, for the more we become implicated in rectifying such reversals, the more we enter into the darkest regions of material anxiety. Lord Krsna has also advised us in this connection. We should tolerate things instead of becoming agitated.

4:12 A.M.

Sri Harinama Cintamani (spoken by Haridasa Thakura to Lord Caitanya and written by Bhaktivinoda Thakura):

Vaisnava-ninda:

An offender against a sadhu is one who criticizes a Vaisnava about his caste, or some unpremeditated accidental fall-down, or the last traces of his previous sins or his sinful activities prior to awakening to Lord Krishna.  This offender will never develop a taste for chanting the name of Lord Krishna. One who has taken complete shelter of the pure devotional process is considered a pure Vaisnava. The four abovementioned faults may be present in him, but he is totally free from all other shortcomings. Hence, criticizing him spells doom for the offender.  The glories of the holy name are propagated by the Vaisnava; Lord Krishna does not tolerate criticism against him.  One may discard all other activities like religiosity, yoga, sacrifices, fruitive activities, empirical speculation and so on; if one simply chants the holy name, that is the quintessence of spiritual culture.

Srila Prabhupada separates the offending of the chanter as distinct from the other offenses. It is the most grievous. All the other impurities of the Vaisnava are considered nullified if he takes to chanting Hare Krishna mantra in earnest. So the glories of the holy name free one from all the shortcomings remaining or still present offenses are considered nullified for the person who holds them. Finding fault with the chanter of the holy name is the greatest of all the offenses.

I woke up with an alarm clock at 2:30 A.M., and Narayana Kavaca was already in my room. He was helping me already with a few things. I was aware that if I chant without attention it will lead me down the bad road. I should try for the most to stay on the auspicious track. I kept pretty much attentive in the accumulation but did not get to chant very fast, I kept them steady.

On the score against the envy and ignorance
which would make me commit this offense,
of serious flaws I am not important compared to the glory of sincere hari-nama.

In the Puranas it is said that Krishna sees the best in a sincere soul. He had declared it about it Himself. Since it is true about Supreme I might get there.

Since the slightest chanting
delivers a devotee to the highest stage
let me join with You and chant again
and praise the good chanters,
live without offense to them.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Prabhupada Meditations

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Prabhupada meditation needn’t be thought of as something esoteric and elusive. It’s remembering your spiritual father. You’re sorry that you’re not serving him better. But you know you shouldn’t just dwell on that in a negative way. Prabhupada writes, “If one has faith, even if for the time being he can’t fully carry out the injunctions of the Lord—as long as he doesn’t admit defeat and hopelessness—then gradually he will be elevated to the right position.”

So you remember your spiritual father, and you live by his instructions.

Another point: Are Prabhupada meditations private or public? They’re both. Sometimes it is shared among the devotees, as when everyone gathers for the Prabhupada guru-puja and sings the same prayers. There should be agreed upon conclusions as to what Prabhupada meant in his teachings and what he intended for his followers. He’s not just one person’s Prabhupada. One of the best ways to remember him is to work with his followers even when it’s difficult.

And as a complement to the public worship, there is a private relationship with him. It must be so, and we don’t want it otherwise. Sometimes we even feel disturbed when someone starts talking about Prabhupada. We think, “Prabhupada remembrance . . . is not so easy to attain him as this.” Or we think, “They have asked me to speak of Prabhupada, but how can I do it? It is not something to be so openly discussed.”

Then it is esoteric? Yes and no. It is an open secret; it is pure love—which you cannot weigh and put into a package. We each have our pure devotion for Prabhupada, and it is not always touched on in the general recitation of his glories.

Sometimes we are unsure, “Does Prabhupada know I’m here? Does he love me? Does he understand my inner nature?” The answer to this is yes, but you have to enter a real relationship as menial servant, as disciplined follower, practicing devotee. Srila Prabhupada will shower his blessings on you, and you will know him, without a doubt.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Who I Am

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Reaching out to Krishna
you can not touch Him
you are too poor-hearted.
They cried, “What do you think
you are, a saint?”

You are a chit centered
on your body
or your mind
or your false conception of yourself.
You dwell on memories of a machine
that you put a penny into and out comes
a photo of Joe Louis or Ezzard
Charles. You played marbles in
the street, and you were too
shy to approach girls. You were
afraid of big kids walking
in your direction in
the street, and you were afraid of
big dogs on a tight leash.

You didn’t think of God.
No one taught you in
an interesting or convincing way.
So how could you at 71 years old
say you would reach
out to Krishna.
Isn’t it too late?
Oh, but you just heard He’s
very forgiving. But you have
to go to Him repentant
and very much wanting Him.
That does not sound like me.

I just like to write poems
with snappy lines and sit in
my reclining chair.

I am feeling short of breath,
and my ankle hurts.
I welcome my headaches
because then I can take painkillers.
I don’t need to put myself
down this way,
but it’s what I see when I look at myself.
I don’t have much money
or a big heart.
I’m selfish, and I’m a tart.
Prabhupada has planted a
bhakti
lata bija
in my heart,
but winter is coming and they don’t survive
well in the cold and dark.

You are a devotee much better than I’m,
and I see you coming and going
in your preaching and bhakti activities.
I don’t want to be envious of you.
And I wish you well.
I wouldn’t approach you for a
friendship, but I’ll accept myself for who I am.
I’m praying and crying
to improve.
Please accept me Lord,
I want to reach out to you.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Free Write

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

I did a painting today on my birthday, and I hope to post a photo of it on the Web. It’s a primitive portrait of Radha and Krishna. But when you look at it close it has nice details. Layers of blue clouds and a sunburst with yellow rays coming down from the upper right hand corner. And as I look at it I want to add some words to it. Add the words “Hare Krishna.” There are some paint drops from the wet brush from the sky. Make this one of many. Don’t leave them wide open with loads of white spaces but fill them up.

An ordinary person is forbidden from hearing the rasa-lila talks between Radha and Krishna and the gopis because the pastimes appear like the ordinary affairs between boys and girls. They only increase people’s lusty desires. Especially when a Mayavadi speaker talks on rasa-dance he contaminates the whole affair. But if one is taught by a real spiritual master to a faithful hearer it will banish his material lust and will clean the heart of sinful intentions. Such is the effect of eternal talks about the rasa dance. The rasa dance lasts for a period of a night of Lord Brahma and only when Brahma’s brahma-muhurta (one and a half hours before dawn) did Krishna tell the gopis to go home. They were reluctant, but they were obedient to Him. Another miracle that took place was that they went to Krishna in their spiritual bodies and their material bodies remained in bed beside their husbands.

It is the most wonderful and outstanding part of the Srimad-Bhagavatam, consisting of five chapters in the Tenth Canto. It must be appreciated with great care—avoiding material attitudes, hearing by unqualified students, from Mayavadis, or academic professors—but when it is approached carefully it is the medicine for the worst diseases of material contamination.

I’ve been getting headaches as usual, everyday, and maybe a little more than a usual, not much more than usual. The varieties of medicines I take usually stabilize but recent new problem is that my handwriting has been illegible and when I try to dictate the day’s poem back I can not read it. That’s why yesterday no poem was printed. I actually wrote a nice poem about Lord Rama and Sita, I wrote how he didn’t want Her to be alone in the forest but against His better judgement He obeyed Her wish that He go capture a fascinating deer, who was actually an evil apparition send by Ravana (Rama told Sita to stay with Laksmana and not to go out of a protective circle of fire he built around to protect Her, but a disaster occurred and Sita accused Laksmana of infidelity and Ravana came and kidnapped her). After telling the pastime I then said I should never step out of the protective fire pattern given to me by Prabhupada. I did step out of it and had my reputation burned. But I have been reinstated and within the positive circle again. I wrote some other things in the poem, but eventually the handwriting deteriorated to the point where I couldn’t read it to dictate it on my dictaphone. Today was better. When I’m too sleepy it happens. Sometimes it happens in my prose, and I have to omit a section from the journal because it is illegible. I hope this doesn’t become a permanently deteriorating phenomenon. If I write slowly and half-printed and also write it as largely as possible then I will be able to read it.

I don’t think it’s senility, dementia or anything like that. I just have to print rather than write (and I’m doing it now) and think it will be readable.

The house is full now. I have removed my long headache, I’ll skip going to the gym this morning for the exercises however. Caitanya-candrodaya is doing the cooking. Bhakti-rasa and Kirtida are here, and I find them nice company. Narayana is back. He is working with CC on the Srila Prabhupada Position website. Baladeva is in the kitchen. Narayana wrote me a letter saying he cares for me very much and is worried that I’m getting headaches, taking medicine and pushing myself, to produce writing, I felt ashamed to receive such a caring letter from him.

Bhakti Lata, Alachua, USA: Live Forever. Die Tomorrow.

"Live your material life like you will live forever; live your spiritual life as though you will die tomorrow."
 - Unknown

Tomorrow I leave for India.

It was around 5pm this evening when I pressed "Send" on my last school assignment of the Fall 2010 semester. I was a week early. In every area of my life, I have striven to tie up all loose ends by December 8th. I even registered for classes for next semester, and I have my weekly schedule mapped out.

But this evening, I've put it all aside for a month. I bundled up in the bitingly cold weather and drove over to the temple for Sayana Arati to bid goodnight to Radhe Shyam one last time. Only two or three people were there when the curtains gently swooshed open, and I sang for Them.

I prayed and prayed to Radhe Shyam to please protect my heart on this voyage to India - I prayed that I would not be a tourist, that I would not socialize, and - because this is one of my greatest challenges - I prayed that I would gain even a morsel of appreciation for the holy dham.

And then I meditated on the above opening quote - I have planned out my material life... so now how do I live my spiritual life?

After all, like a countdown, my last day in this world will come. On the eve of my departure from New Raman Reti as I sang for Radhe Shyam, I imagined that I would never return. I imagined that this would be the last time I would ever get to offer my obeisance when the curtains swoosh open, and this would be the last time I would sing for Radhe Shyam.

This is my last time.

Suddenly, the pain of the moment became as beautiful as cut glass.

I pray to live every day like my last.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: THE TURN OF THE TIDE – THE FOUR PRESCRIPTIONS

Arthur Gordon shares a wonderful, intimate story of his own spiritual renewal in a little story called “The Turn of the Tide.” It tells of a time in his life when he began to feel that everything was stale and flat. His enthusiasm waned; his writing efforts were fruitless. And the situation was growing worse day by day.

Finally, he determined to get help from a medical doctor. Observing nothing physically wrong, the doctor asked him if he would be able to follow his instructions for one day.

When Gordon replied that he could, the doctor told him to spend the following day in the place where he was happiest as a child. He could take food, but he was not to talk to anyone or to read or write or listen to the radio. He then wrote out four prescriptions and told him to open one at nine, twelve, three, and six o’clock.

“Are you serious?” Gordon asked him.

“You won’t think I’m joking when you get my bill!” was the reply.

So the next morning, Gordon went to the beach. As he opened the first prescription, he read “Listen carefully.” He thought the doctor was insane. How could he listen for three hours? But he had agreed to follow the doctor’s orders, so he listened.

He heard the usual sounds of the sea and the birds. After a while, he could hear the other sounds that weren’t so apparent at first. As he listened, he began to think of lessons the sea had taught him as a child—patience, respect, an awareness of the interdependence of things. He began to listen to the sounds—and the silence—and to feel a growing peace.

At noon, he opened the second slip of paper and read “Try reaching back.” “Reaching back to what?” he wondered. Perhaps to childhood, perhaps to memories of happy times. He thought about his past, about the many little moments of joy. He tried to remember them with exactness. And in remembering, he found a growing warmth inside.

At three o’clock, he opened the third piece of paper. Until now, the prescriptions had been easy to take. But this one was different; it said “Examine your motives.”

At first he was defensive. He thought about what he wanted—success, recognition, security, and he justified them all. But then the thought occurred to him that those motives weren’t good enough, and that perhaps therein was the answer to his stagnant situation.

He considered his motives deeply. He thought about past happiness. And at last, the answer came to him.

“In a flash of certainty,” he wrote, “I saw that if one’s motives are wrong, nothing can be right. It makes no difference whether you are a mailman, a hairdresser, an insurance salesman, a housewife—whatever. As long as you feel you are serving others, you do the job well. When you are concerned only with helping yourself, you do it less well—a law as inexorable as gravity.”

When six o’clock came, the final prescription didn’t take long to fill. “Write your worries on the sand,” it said. He knelt and wrote several words with a piece of broken shell; then he turned and walked away. He didn’t look back; he knew the tide would come in.

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Recipe : Vegan French Toast

Délicieux petit-déjeuner...

Better than pancakes, easier than waffles, French toast made from fresh bread proved just the perfect breakfast on this freezing Florida morning. I even cut some into sticks for le enfants to take to school today. Ahhh, winter. We will not be defeated by you.

This weeks loaf: braided bread. Turned out well (my kids ate multiple slices, in rapid succession, with butter). But I didn't have bread flour--only King Arthur Unbleached AP. So white! I added a few tablespoons of gluten flour to the mix and it turned out so very...spongey. Like an unbromated Wonder Bread. Very strange. I need some money to restock my bulk supplies. In the meantime, it's KA white flour from Sam's club, $6 for 10 lbs. That's how we suffer.

This morning was freezing cold in Florida! I decided to be a good mom and actually feed my children breakfast! Inspired by the wonder of yesterday's spongey bread, I gave my hand at vegan French toast. Only we are lacto-vegetarians, so I did use butter and cow milk. But the recipe below can go either way.

Recipe : Toast de France

2 cups milk (vanilla nondairy milk, coconut milk or moo milk)
1/4 cup flour
1 TBSPN sugar
1/2 tspn cinnamon
5 slices of bread cut half inch thick
cooking oil, such as coconut, or butter/buttery stick
optionals: pinch of cardamom, fresh grate of nutmeg, splash of vanilla, etc.

1)Combine milk, sugar, cinnamon, flour with whisk in shallow bowl.

2)Let sit a bit to thicken.

3)Warm cast iron skillet or whatever your pan of preference is.

4)Dredge bread through the mixture, coating both sides.

5)Melt/heat butter/oil/buttery stick.

6)Place coated bread in pan, fry over moderate heat. Flip, repeat. Remove from pan.

7) Serve with powdered sugar or maple syrup. Or both.

My son, Grégoire, was loving the cinnamon-y aroma from the get go. Here he is settling down to his breakfast. Okay, he ate it standing up--but he was at the table, which is a good thing.

Here's my little Manon, thoroughly enjoying her French toast breakfast. Notice she is sitting at a separate table from her brother. We Mirels need our personal space.

While my kids were thinking of this:

I couldn’t help remembering this:

Sadly, I had more batter left after making breakfast for the birdies. When I returned home from dropping them at school, I proceeded to cook more.

Looks good, no? Yes. I ate it. All. Now I need to sleep it off, sumo wrestler style. Such will be my Wednesday. I hear this is how French women stay so thin.

Japa Group: In The Presence Of A Pure Chanter

The power of just being in the presence of a pure chanter of the holy name cannot be overestimated. The potency “exudes” from his person. You want to chant because you see how blissful he is in chanting, and if you talk to him you hear the gems of wisdom.

Deva Gaura Hari, AU: Depending on our eternal Father

My four year old son likes to draw pictures with the Windows 'Paint' program, and today I showed him that you could save the pictures also. He loved the idea that he could keep his artworks, and we saved two of his pictures this afternoon.

This evening he was doing a third picture, and I told him we had to turn off the computer now to do some other work. He looked at me with concern and said, "Daddy, can we also save this one?" He was thinking that we didn't have enough room, or that we would have to delete the other pictures.

I told him we could easily save thousands, even millions, of such small files, and he was happy.

The incident started me thinking about how we have a similar limited mentality when it comes to Krishna, and the gifts He can provide, both spiritual and material.

Like my little boy, with our limited brains, we think that we could have either 'this' or 'that', but if we depend on Krishna, we can often have both things, and much more too.

The key is that we have to rely on Krishna, and not our own mental projections and intellectual ponderings. With our limited viewpoint we cannot conceive of the solutions and wonderous outcomes Krishna can bring into our life, if we just sincerely admit our incompetence to understand things, and rely on His guidance.

In the incident of Narada Muni saving the hunter mrigari the hunter, Srila Prabhupada explains:

"The source of our income is not actually the source of our maintenance. Every living being—from the great Brahma down to an insignificant ant—is being maintained by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Eko bahünäm yo vidadhäti kämän. The one Supreme Being, Krishna, maintains everyone. Our so-called source of income is our own choice only. If I wish to be a hunter, it will appear that hunting is the source of my maintenance. If I become a brähmana and completely depend on Krishna, I do not conduct a business, but nonetheless my maintenance is supplied by Krishna. The hunter was disturbed about breaking his bow because he was worried about his income. Närada Muni assured the hunter because he knew that the hunter was not being maintained by the bow but by Krishna. Being the agent of Krishna, Närada Muni knew very well that the hunter would not suffer by breaking the bow. There was no doubt that Krishna would supply him food."

If we practice to always rely on the superior intelligence of Krishna, we can always be open to His hand in our lives, and we will be ready to accept His guidance, and His plan for our happiness, which is far, far, beyond our current conception.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Clips from 24 hour kirtan (Ashalata & Indresh) and thoughts.

Below are 2 chanting clips posted on YouTube with my son and my wife.

The kirtan was at a Hindu temple and the main congregation came in around 5pm on Sunday. They were very supportive and when Japa was done in the main temple room not only did everyone participate but all the Japa beads were taken, with sincere hope that they continue on at home.

A lot of young people wanted beads but even the book table ran out with some youngsters very disappointed. But it shows the "hunger" for the maha-mantra and the attraction where teenagers were more enthused than their parents to take the holy name.

The other highlight was too see some old faces that used to come to ISKCON regularly and for whatever reason have fallen off. There were also some faces that I did not recognize that said they come irregularly as well. Both groups promised to come more and hopefully they will follow through to take shelter of Srila Prabhupada and Sri Sri Radha Gopinatha.

Mutual encouragement came from an unexpected source, an old devotee that we hardly see anymore. He is not as active in devotional service as he wants to be but he was very happy to see my son and daughter, who he has known since they were kids, still serving Srila Prabhupada. He talked about all the "tests" we face and had supportive words for our continued service to Srila Prabhupada. I encouraged him to do the same and later on he took some books from the table as well. When he met my daughter-in-law, Kishori, he told about a Prabhupada memory that even I did not know and my son  does not remember. He told Kishori that when her husband was a kid he was fussing and then Srila Prabhupada gave him his garland and Indresh quieted down. It was a nice and heart warming encounter.

Kripamoya dasa, UK: Protecting Children: Thought for the Day

There has been discussion amongst UK politicians recently on the role of commercialism in the premature sexualization of children. Companies manufacturing children’s clothes exist to maximize their profits, and may therefore show no ethical discretion in the clothing they design, produce, and offer for sale.

Children are bombarded with sexual references and overt messages. Sex sells, and it seems that clothing companies are now targeting an even younger audience. Children pester their parents for the latest fashions and it is increasingly hard for the beleaguered parents to make the right choices.

And what does this reveal about the ‘grown-up’ culture we are protecting our children from?

Akhandadhi Das speaks on this morning’s Thought for the Day on BBC Radio 4

Australian News: World Enlightenent Day – Brisbane

Many years ago the GBC changed the name to “The Prabhupada Marathon.” That was appropriate, since Srila Prabhupada was on a constant marathon to please Krsna and save us, literally sacrificing his life. We go on only a short marathon. What an example he set for us! This is a marathon to please Prabhupada, to showsome gratitude for what he has done for us and for the world. He wanted everyone to hear about Krsna, and we want everyone to hear about Krsna and Srila Prabhupada.

In the Bhagavad-gita (9.29) purport he says, “When a diamond is set in a golden ring, it looks very nice. The gold is glorified, and at the same time the diamond is glorified. The Lord and the living entity eternally glitter, and when a living entity becomes inclined to the service of the Supreme Lord he looks like gold. The Lord is a diamond, and so this combination is very nice.”

During this Prabhupada Marathon let’s meditate on giving these valuable jewels to as many souls as we can so that they can also become golden and bright-faced. This is the Iron Age of Kali, but we are within Lord Caitanya’s 10,000-year-long golden age.

World Enlightenment Day is on Saturday December 11th

Program
8.30am Prasadam
9.00am Meeting
9.30am Departure from the Temple
10.00am – 1.00pm Sankirtan and Book distribution
1.30pm Prasadam at the Temple

Hari Sauri das, Mayapura, IN: Q&A: can eternal relationships change? – part 2

One obvious example of an eternally liberated devotee who changed her form for the pleasure of the Lord is Srimati Tulasi devi.

Tulasi Maharani is an expansion of Srimati Vrnda devi, the expansion of Srimati Radharani who has the service of organizing all the necessary requirements to facilitate Lord Krsna’s lilas.

We worship Tulasi devi in her form as a plant

and there is a story how she came to take that form:

Tulasi devi becomes a plant (from www. salagram.net)
**********************
Pastimes involving pure devotees are only for the benefit of conditioned souls in the material world. This pastime, given in the Padma purana and in the Brahma-vaivarta purana involvong Tulasi devi reveals this clearly.

Once Tulasi devi descended as the daughter of King Kushadvaja. She was married to Jalhandara. It is said that Samudra deva the demigod controlling the nether regions had Lakshmi devi as a daughter (since she appeared from him at time of the churning of the ocean) and Jalandara (one who is born from water).

Jalandara was married to Tulasi devi and drew strength from her purity and chastity. So firm was her chastity that even Lord Shiva could not defeat Jalandara in battle and all the demigods went to Lord Vishnu for help.

At this time, Lord Vishnu went to Tulasi devi assuming the form of her husband, Jalandara. When Tulasi devi greeted Him, thinking Him to be her husband, her chastity was momentarily broken. Taking advantage of this the demigods killed Jalandara.

When Tulasi devi understood what happened, Lord Vishnu revealed His original form. An enraged Tulasi devi cursed Lord Vishnu for His stone hearted behavior to become a stone. Honoring His pure devotee, Lord Vishnu accepted this curse and promised to appear as the Saligrama shila in the Gandika river (now in Nepal).

He also gave Tulsai devi the benediction that she will eternally reside with Him as His consort in Vaikuntha. He said that for the benefit of every one she will assume the form of a plant which will be most auspicious for anyone performing devotional service.

Thus devotees never offer anything to Krishna without a Tulasi leaf. He always adorns Himself with a Tulasi garland. The goddess of fortune, Laksmi, is sometimes envious of the Tulasi leaves which are placed at the lotus feet of the Lord, for they remain fixed there and do not move, whereas Laksmiji, although stationed by the chest of the Lord, sometimes has to please other devotees who pray for her favor. Laksmiji sometimes has to go to satisfy her numerous devotees, but tulasi leaves never forsake their position, and the Lord therefore appreciates the service of the tulasi more than the service of Laksmi.

In October 1976 Srila Prabhupada received a long list of questions from Vidya dasi, who was the tulasi pujari in Los Angeles:

TD vol 5 – October 25 1976 – Sri Vrndavan dhama
There was an interesting letter today from Vidya dasi, the pujari for Srimati Tulasi devi in Los Angeles. She wrote at length asking about the care of Tulasi plants. She has been experimenting with trying to grow Tulasi in the open ground but has not met with much success. She asked if they should build a special Tulasi house.
Prabhupada replied to the affirmative. “If it is not possible for Tulasi to survive the winters when planted in the ground, then a suitable house should be provided for her. Even the Canadian temples, which are in a much colder climate, are keeping Tulasi nicely. Why should there be so much difficulty in Los Angeles, which has such a nice climate? Just do everything very carefully. Tulasi Flourishes where there is love and devotion.”
Vidya dasi also included a series of eighteen specific questions, some of which, I gathered from Prabhupada’s reaction, he considered a bit trivial, but he answered them nevertheless. As he sat in the sunshine on a straw mat in the back garden receiving his massage, surrounded by Tulasi plants growing around the perimeter of the lawn, he listened carefully as Jagadisa asked the questions and replied them one by one.

The first two questions were:

Q1) Is each Tulasi a separate jiva soul or an expansion of one pure devotee?

Q2) Where does her spirit soul go when she leaves this body?

Srila Prabhupada answered:

1)  Tulasi is one devotee who appears wherever there is devotion to Krsna.

2)  Tulasi’s body is spiritual.

Tulasi Maharani is therefore the best example of an eternal associate of Krsna who changed her eternal body just for the pleasure of the Lord. She is worshiped in all ISKCON temples
and indeed, in the homes of all pious Hindus.
