Sri Radha-Kundastakam
by Srimad Raghunatha dasa Gosvami

"After the killig of Aristasura, Srimati Radhika and Her sakhis exchanged many joking words with Sri Krsna concerning the necessary atonement for one who has committed the offence of killing a bull. As a result, the Queen of Vrndavana, Srimati Radhika, and Her sakhis joyfully excavated and filled Sri Radha-kunda with their own hands. May that immensely fragrant Radha-kunda be my shelter.

"In the land of the hearts of those who bathe in Radha-kunda, a desire tree of the superlative prema, which is not attainable even for Krsna's principal queens in Dvaraka, will arise. May that supremely charming Radha-kunda be my shelter.

"For the pleasure of Srimati Radhika, even Sri Krsna Himself, yearning to attain Her merciful sidelong glance, regularly bathes in Radha-kunda, carefully observing all the appropriate rituals. May that supremely enchanting Radha-kunda be my shelter.

"May that supremely enchanting Radha-kunda, which the moon of Vraja, Sri Krsna, loves as much as He loves the crown-jewel amongst the sweet girls of Vraja, Srimati Radhika, and which He has made known by the name of Radhika Herself, be my shelter.

"The mercy obtained by serving Radha-kunda makes the desire-creeper of prema for the prince of Vraja sprout and is celebrated for bearing the flower of service to my svamini Srimati Radhika. May that supremely charming Radha-kunda be my shelter.

"Gloriously manifest on the banks of Radha-kunda are eight kunjas named after Radhika's principal sakhis. Acting as stimuli for the amorous pastimes of the Divine Couple, these kunjas are filled with the sweet humming of bumblebees and are desired by everyone. May that supremely enchanting Radha-kunda be the shelter of my life.

"Situated on an exquisite dais on the bank of Radha-kunda and accompanied by Her beloved sakhis, our svamini Srimati Radhika charmingly engages in sweet, joking words with Sri Krsna, the moon of Vraja. These playful verbal exchanges are enhanced by the suggestion of so many innuendoes. May that Radha-kunda be the shelter of my life.

"May that very charming and especially fragrant Radha-kunda, where intoxicated with love the Divine Couple and the sakhis daily sport with great joy in the water so fragrant with exquisite lotus flowers, be the sole shelter of my life.

"To that devotee who, in a resolute mood of aspiring to serve Srimati Radhika, reads this charming prayer describing Sri Radha-kunda, even in their present body Sri Krsna will quickly grant them darsana of not only His beloved Radhika, but also of Their many variegated amorous pastimes. Witnessing these pastimes and envisioning himself serving Yugala-kisora in various ways, such a devotee will feel immense jubilation. This astaka is recited in the poetic meter known as 'Malini'."

Bahulastami - Disappearance

On the eighth day of the waning phase of the damodara month the appearance day of Radha Kunda is celebrated by the residents. Bathing in Radha Kunda is especially benefical on this day. By this one gains the favor of Radha, by which one gains the favor of Krsna. Radha Kunda appeared at midnight. People go to Radha Kunda and offer prasadam, garlands and pumkins (gords) into the water, then at midnight take bath in Radha Kunda and then bathe in Syama Kunda. Many people like to bathe at a ghat where Lord Nityananda's sakti, Jahnava Mata used to bathe. But wherever you go you better get there early as thousands of people/devotees will be there. And bring some warm clothing for afterwards, as it is sooooo "cooling".

The holy place known as Mathura is spiritually superior to Vaikuntha, the transcendental world, because the Lord appeared there. Superior to Mathura puri is the transcendental forest of Vrndavana because of Krsna's rasalila pastimes. And superior to the forest of Vrndavana is Goverdhana Hill, for it was raised by the divine hand of Sri Krsna and was the site of his various loving pastimes. And, above all, the superexcellent Sri Radha Kunda stands supreme, for it is overflooded with the ambrosial nectarean prema of the Lord of gokula, Sri Krsna. Where, then, is that intelligent person who is unwilling to serve this divine Radha Kunda, which is situated at the foot of Goverdhana Hill?

Srila Rupa Goswami's Nectar of Instruction (Upadeshamritam)

The Origin of Radha-kund

After killing a bull-demon named Aristasura, Krishna approached Radharani to engage in loving affairs. However, She rebuked Him, stating He was impure because of committing the sin of killing a bull, the symbol of religion. She suggested that to counteract this sin He should bathe in all the sacred rivers.

Krishna, being eager to engage in loving affairs with Srimati Radharani, immediately shoved His lotus foot into the ground, making a large hole, and called all the sacred rivers to enter into it. They appeared before Him and formed Syama-kunda (the bathing place of Syama--one who is the color of a dark rain cloud).

After bathing, Krishna stated that He had become pure by bathing in Syama-kunda, but that the gopis had become impure, having sided with a demon, even though he appeared in the form of a bull. Radharani, along with some of Her gopi friends, broke their bangles and dug a hole with the broken pieces. But there was no water - so Krishna laughed. The gopis then formed a line to the Manasi Ganga and started to fill the hole with water that was passed from one gopi to another. At that time, all the sacred rivers again arrived in person and requested permission to enter into Radharani's kunda, which they did after receiving Radharani's blessing.

Srila Gurudeva’s health update

Subject: Srila Gurudeva’s health update

Dear Devotees and dear Friends,

please accept our dandavats pranams. All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga and all glories to Sri Sri Radha Vinode Bihariji.

We know that all of you are waiting for more news about Srila Gurudeva’s physical condition. The last days have been very trying for all us, sometimes moving forwards, and sometimes moving backwards. At times we are very hopeful and other times we are hopeless. Srila Gurudeva is churning our hearts, uniting us as a real family, and making us more and more attached to him.
Srila Gurudeva is resting well, his bowel movements are good and all his vital signs are normal. He very patiently takes the medical protocols that we described in our previous update. He tries to drink & eat the liquid preparations that we offer him. But this is not always easy due to mucus buildup and due to his lack of appetite. Since today we are using a nebulizer to get rid of excessive mucus. This has brought a lot of relief.
Almost every m orning and afternoon he sits outside on the swing for more than an hour, giving darshan to the devotees assembled on the lawn below. Srila Gurudeva is very merciful and allows so many devotees to render affectionate services.
But we are still a long way from complete success. It can go either way, all depending on the causeless mercy of Sri Giriraja, Srila Gurudeva’s own desire, and our prayers. Please continue to pray and serve together for the pleasure of Srila Gurudeva. He is our everything, the life of our lives, the only wealth in the entire universe.
Vaisnavadasanudasa & aspirant for the service of Sri Guru and Vaisnavas
Swami B.V. Madhava & Brajanath dasa

Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: Happy Radhastami!

Here's some nectar from the Nectar of Devotion

Because Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, it is very difficult to approach Him. But the devotees, taking advantage of His compassionate nature, which is represented by Radharani, always pray to Radharani for Krsna's compassion.

The behavior of the confidential friends of Krsna is described by a friend of Radharani who told Radharani, "My dear graceful Radharani, Your intimate friend Krsna is also served by His intimate boyfriends. Some of them cut jokes with Him in mild voices and please Him very much by this." For example, Krsna had one brahmana friend whose name was Madhumangala. This boy would joke by playing the part of a greedy brahmana. Whenever the friends ate, he would eat more than all others, especially laddus, of which he was very fond. Then after eating more laddus than anyone else, Madhumangala would still not be satisfied, and he would say to Krsna, "If You give me one more laddu, then I shall be pleased to give You my blessings so that Your friend Radharani will be very much pleased with You." The brahmanas are supposed to give blessings to the vaisyas (farming and merchant caste), and Krsna presented Himself as the son of Maharaja Nanda, a vaisya; so the brahmana boy was right in giving blessings to Krsna. Thus Krsna was very pleased by His friend's blessings, and He would supply him with more and more laddus.

After He had stolen some yogurt from the pots of two gopis, Krsna told one of His gopi friends, "My dear beautiful friend, I can take oath that I have not stolen even a drop of yogurt from your pot! But still your friend Radharani is very shamelessly smelling the flavor of My mouth. Kindly forbid Her from this devious policy of putting Her face near Mine." When Krsna was speaking like this, the friends of Radharani could not check their laughter.

>From the Srimad Bhagavatam 2.3.23 purport

In Vrndavana all the pure devotees pray for the mercy of Srimati Radharani, the pleasure potency of Lord Krsna. Srimati Radharani is a tenderhearted feminine counterpart of the supreme whole, resembling the perfectional stage of the worldly feminine nature. Therefore, the mercy of Radharani is available very readily to the sincere devotees, and once She recommends such a devotee to Lord Krsna, the Lord at once accepts the devotee's admittance into His association.

>From the Caitanya Caritamrta Madhya test 87-91

“‘Srimati Radharani's twenty-five chief transcendental qualities are: (1) She is very sweet. (2) She is always freshly youthful. (3) Her eyes are restless. (4) She smiles brightly. (5) She has beautiful, auspicious lines. (6) She makes Krsna happy with Her bodily aroma. (7) She is very expert in singing. (8) Her speech is charming. (9) She is very expert in joking and speaking pleasantly. (10) She is very humble and meek. (11) She is always full of mercy. (12) She is cunning. (13) She is expert in executing Her duties. (14) She is shy. (15) She is always respectful. (16) She is always calm. (17) She is always grave. (18) She is expert in enjoying life. (19) She is situated at the topmost level of ecstatic love. (20) She is the reservoir of loving affairs in Gokula. (21) She is the most famous of submissive devotees. (22) She is very affectionate to elderly people. (23) She is very submissive to the love of Her friends. (24) She is the chief gopé. (25) She always keeps Kåñëa under Her control. In short, She possesses unlimited transcendental qualities, just as Lord Krsna does.’

All glories to Srimati Radharani!

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Flashback Photo - 1972

Today is Radhastami, the appearance day of Shrimati Radharani. However this day holds special significance for New Remuna Dhama, as it was on Radhastami in 1972 that our beloved Deities, Sri Sri Radha Ksira-Chora Gopinatha were installed (welcomed through various vedic ceremonies where a 'contract' for worship is established)! Above is a picture of Sri Sri Radha Krisa-Chora Gopinatha receiving their first arati ceremony.

Namamrta by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:

'If one chants His holy name, Krishna becomes pleased and obliged.

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead exists everywhere. Therefore when one chants His transcendental names—Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare—the Supreme Personality of Godhead is automatically pleased by such sankirtana. It is not that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is absent. He is present there and when a devotee utters the transcendental name it is not a material sound. Therefore the Supreme Personality of Godhead is naturally pleased. A devotee knows that the Lord is present everywhere and that one can please Him simply by chanting His holy name." (Srimad-Bhagavatam 8.17.24)

This is a wonderful quality of chanting Krishna's names. It attracts the attention of the Lord who always remains obliged to the devotees. In another purport Prabhupada writes that Krishna says, "When I was away from Draupadi, she cried with the words "Hey Govinda!" This call for Me has put me in her debt and that indebtedness is gradually increasing in my heart. This statement by Krishna gives evidence of how one can please the Supreme Lord simply by addressing Him. Krishna has the same characteristics as the individual living beings. As we like to be called by our names, Krishna has the same psychology and likes to be called by His names. It is not a false egoism but a natural sentiment of love. Chanting creates a loving exchange between Krishna and the chanter. He likes it when we call on His holy names and a bond is created. A devotee is grateful to Krishna and Krishna becomes grateful to the devotee. Krishna cannot be pleased by any amount of material offerings or displays of scholarship or austerity as much as He can be pleased by the simple sincere uttering of His name by a humble devotee.

A had a bad night last night. Yesterday I had a headache in the afternoon and took extra rest. It may have been because of that that I was not able to sleep at night. I woke at nine and despite taking some sleep medicine I could not get back to deep rest. I got up from bed at twelve and began my chanting. It was a good session of quick-paced japa in which I chanted all sixteen rounds by 2:30. But at two o'clock I developed a twinge in my right eye which became a migraine headache and required medicine. At least I was able to chant well with attention and concentration for the japa period. I will have to pay later for the lack of sleep. Narayana Kavaca has mentioned to me lately about his increased feelings of devotion to his chanting. He's especially attached to getting up early in the morning, no later than two and chanting in the quiet atmosphere. He uses an eye-mask and earplugs to keep himself isolated from outside disturbances. He feels there is no chanting time that equals the early hours and keeps his schedule so that he can do it that way. It is encouraging to see him chanting in this fashion.

Krishna is grateful when
you chant His names.
Just try to imagine
that power of japa
and kirtana. They can
accomplish such a great
thing. By other methods
it is not easy to please
Krishna who is atmarama,
fully satisfied in himself.
How can one presume
to make the all-great
grateful? Yet this simple
gesture which He has
introduced and endorsed
can do it. You
have to chant nicely,
without offenses.
Offensive chanting won't
make Him grateful,
but the pure outpouring
of the heart makes Him
obliged and He never forgets the
chanter and grows
in affection toward
His devotee.

5 a.m. but it's light outside, German
lush foliage of summer.
Like this all over Europe now,
almost July.
Last night Astha-ratha took the evening
train to Berlin and after some initial
engine trouble, Krishna-ksetra got his
van onto the highway headed for Belgium.
I lingered overnight. They handed me the
Nectar of Devotion and I read our master's
words about practicing of bhakti.
He said it is latent in the heart of
every living entity; even the aborigines
recognize something wonderful in nature.
When this consciousness is matured it is
Krishna consciousness.

"Keep the wheels moving," you told
the sannyasis. I'm one of them.
May I keep in mind the regal image
of you in saffron,
wrapped in light shawl for summer,
and devotees coming to be with you.
I hope to read your books and
write in my way and honor
the vows I made before you.
That's the purpose of human life
and you don't want me to keep it to myself
but tell others—
Krishna consciousness is the greatest need
for all the world.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Poem from Under Dark Stars

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

1.
The UDS poem openly
admits horns and drums
give him a lift. He even
makes the controversial claim
they cry and bring him to
Radha and Krishna. That's
a hard one to support and
I can't whole-heartedly
endorse it. Say it even
as a weakness or as
a proclivity of a maverick.
The poem turns to my first
entrance into the presence
of my spiritual master. Let me talk
about it.

2.
Here is the poem:
"Be aware that storms come
and rock the boat and skies clear
and head rocks with pain
sometimes. I like the music

God has allowed to emit from
the horns and drums
of angels and strugglers.

Go fast. We always want
to be free of sadness and in mellow
grudge. Give us the best.

Radha-Krishna are the summit.
I'm a climber who believes the
blues bring us there, lift
us instantly and take
cry! I'm afraid but I know my
Lord and I know His
kind followers. You came to
Krishna through the door at
26th Second Avenue because
there was a little sign pasted
on the window.

Classes Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
You checked it out. You
entered and met the Swami.

Now I'm scared. I've become distant. I am
desiring he drag
me back to him. Call
loudly to him—Swamiji!
I've done some wrong things but
they weren't that bad.
Don't…
Do…Give me courage to face what
comes. You're in my blood
and soul. I do know you."

Kurma dasa, AU: Srimati Radharani

Today is a special day on my spiritual calendar. It's the day celebrating the Birthday of Sri Radha, the girl you always see pictured with Krishna.

Sri Radhastami Festival.jpg:

Over five millenia ago in a place now called Northern India on a half moon night in the month of Bhadra, King Vrishabhanu came to the Jamuna River to bathe and found himself engulfed in a golden aura that was emanating from a lotus, which had a baby girl standing on its whorl. When the king returned to the palace with the baby, Queen Kirtida was delighted. But, she was also shocked to find that the girl was blind.

Lord Krishna's mother Yashoda heard that her best friend Kirtida had a baby, so she came to visit along with her husband and her son. Krishna crawled up to the cradle and pulled Himself up and looked in. At that moment, Srimati Radharani's eyes fluttered and opened wide and blossomed like lotuses. It seems that she did not want to see anything of this world, only the form of Sri Krishna. Everyone was delighted.

Srimati Radharani is the mother of the universe, the spiritual mother of all souls. The concept of mother is the most sacred symbol - that of purity, selflessness, caring, sharing, nurturing, and love. When the Holy Names are chanted:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

Hare means Radharani. It is a plaintive desperate cry for the mother. 'Radharani! Please wake us up from this nightmare of mortal life! Remind us of the father we have forgotten and take us home!'"

In the Krishna consciousness movement, devotees carefully worship Srimati Radharani as the bestower of devotional service to Krishna, by attentively chanting her names in the Maha-mantra, by worshiping her Deity form, and by following her instructions.

Two years ago I was invited to cook a giant feast for the festivities celebrating Sri Radha at the Sydney Hare Krishna Temple. I look forward to getting that opportunity again.

In the meantime, please enjoy this visit to the archives.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Radhastami, 1966 From Srila Prabhupada's lecture

Today, the twenty-third of September, is Radha's birthday. She is fifteen days younger than Krishna. When Krishna was a boy, He played with the children of the countryside. Because He was so beautiful, all the girls prayed that someday He would be their husband. Radha loved Krishna the most, even more than the others. She is the symbol of the greatest worship. Krishna and the girls were of the same age. Because girls are married earlier than boys, the girls were all married before Krishna. Despite their marriages, the girls all loved Krishna so much that whenever He played His flute, they would leave their homes and go to Him. This continued until Krishna was sixteen. At the age of sixteen Krishna left His friends and went to live with His real father. All His friends spent the rest of their lives weeping and longing for Him. This too, is worship. Radha and Krishna met again during a solar eclipse at Kurukshetra. It was a meeting of love, but they were again separated. Radha is Krishna's beloved. By her blessing, Krishna will accept us. Hare also means Radha, so when we chant "Hare Krishna" we chant "Radha Krishna."

Kripamoya dasa, UK: The Pope visits Britain

Last month, while I was in Rome, I was able to have a morning audience with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.  I have always wanted to meet the spiritual leader of two billion people so it was a rewarding event. In the afternoon I was invited to take a vegetarian lunch deep inside the heart of the Vatican.

The spiritual experience was only slightly diluted by the presence of 50,000 other people there at the same time. And I was standing at the back. The lunch was in the Vatican cafeteria.

I have always wanted to be in St. Peter’s Square when the Pope gives a blessing. As readers will already know, I like blessings – and who better to bless you than the Holy Father himself?

On this occasion it was 50,000 Germans waving flags and cheering their leader on a balcony who was giving a rousing speech in German. So spiritually invigorating – and ever so slightly chilling at the same time.

I love good oratory, and I like spectacle and music and flag-waving. And when its all combined to honour God’s representative on earth I’m a real sucker.

But I most likely won’t be at any of the events taking place over the next week when the Pope visits Britain – the first Pontiff to do so for 28 years, and the first Pope to come on a state visit. I am very happy for those that will, though. Everyone’s faith needs a boost in these atheistic times, and as the representative of Jesus Christ walks amongst those of flagging faith, you can bet that many will experience a religious re-awakening – and that can only be a good thing.

As Vaishnavas we feel unity with the Pope and his mission, even as we recognize the divergence of theology and approach. In loyal defence of his own tradition, and in keeping with his history as Prefect of the Doctrine of the Faith, he may have relegated other religions as being ‘gravely deficient’ but one of his several titles is ‘Servant of the servants of God’ and we appreciate the humility in that term.

It can’t be easy being the head of the Catholic Church at this point in history. Ravaged by repeated scandal of the worst kind, and unable to placate the numerous victims or accusers, the Church struggles to hold its position of trust. Criticized even by altruists for its unfashionable firmness on religious principles, and relegated by intellectuals as adherents of medieval nonsense, the Church is embattled, but has sufficient genuine spiritual power to survive and prosper.

I wish the Pope well when he arrives in Britain on Thursday.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Radhastami Katha

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Free Write

I turned at random to Srimad-Bhagavatam, Second Canto, Chapter 8, "Questions by King Pariksit", Text 1.

"King Pariksit inquired from Sukadeva Gosvami: How did Narada Muni, whose hearers are as fortunate as those instructed by Lord Brahma, explain the transcendental qualities of the Lord, who is without material qualities, and before whom did he speak?"

Narada Muni was directly instructed by Lord Brahma, who is also directly instructed by the Supreme Lord, therefore the instructions of Narada to his various disciples are as good as those of the Supreme Lord. This is the way of understanding Vedic knowledge. It comes down from the Supreme Lord by disciplic succession, and the transcendental knowledge is distributed to the world even today by this descending process. There is no chance, however, to receive the Vedic knowledge from mental speculators. The test for bonafide spiritual masters is that there should be no difference between the instruction of the Lord originally imparted to His devotee. What Srila Prabhupada brought and delivered to America in 1966 was the teachings of his spiritual master, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, who received it from his teachers Bhaktivinoda Thakura and Gaurkisora das Babaji, who in turn received it from their spiritual masters in the Gaudiya sampradaya coming down from Lord Caitanya, who is Krishna Himself. Nothing is changed in the message, although it is delivered according to time, place and persons by the different acaryas. The written accounts are all in the sastras and in the authorized written tikas by the acaryas.

The verse also stated that the Lord is "without material qualities." This means He existed prior to the material creation. It does not mean, however, that He has no quality but that He has no material quality, such as the modes of goodness, passion and ignorance as the conditioned souls have. He is transcendental to all qualities and is therefore called aguna.

Radhastami is coming. We will have a small observation in our community. Rama-raya of Vrndavana is visiting. I will ask him to lead the kirtana and speak on Radharani. Then we can participate in a feast. I've been reading the section of Srimad-Bhagavatam, "The Gopis Search for Krishna," and it is very wonderful. There is one verse in which the name of Radharani appears in a covered way. The gopis see that Krishna has left the rasa dance, and He has taken one gopi with Him. They examine the footprints of Krishna and this one gopi, who is Srimati Radharani. In one verse they say, "Certainly this particular gopi has perfectly worshiped the all-powerful Personality of Godhead, Govinda, since He was so pleased with Her that He abandoned the rest of us and brought Her to a particular place." (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.30.28) The word used to describe the particular gopi is aradhitah, “She who has perfectly worshiped Bhagavan Hari.” In his commentary to the verse, Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura states, "The sage (Sukadeva Gosvami) has tried with all endeavor to keep Her name hidden, but now it is automatically springing forth from the moon of Sukadeva Gosvami's mouth. This is indeed Her mercy, and it is like the rumbling of a kettledrum to announce Her great fortune."

By examining the two lovers’ footsteps, the gopis (who consist of members of Radha's group and members who are rivals to Radha) conclude that at a certain point Krishna has picked up Radha in His arms and carried Her. Then they see a space where only the front of Krishna's toes are impressed in the earth, and they conclude He is standing tiptoe to collect some flowers to decorate Radharani from the branches of a tree. Then, by their detective work, the gopis ascertain that the Two are finally sitting together.

What happens next is that Krishna suggests they walk further but Radharani, out of amorous pride, tells Krishna that He should carry Her because She is tired and cannot walk any further. Krishna ask Radha to climb onto His shoulders, whereupon He disappears. Radharani is then stricken with the grief of separation. She cries out to Him to return. The gopis find Radharani alone in the forest, and both groups of gopis immediately sympathize with Her and reprimand Krishna for abandoning Her. All the gopis then wander in the forest searching for Krishna. They cannot find Him, and they wind up at the bank of the Yamuna and chant His names until He finally reappears.

New Vrndavan, USA: Humble Request On Behalf Of NV Ashram Mothers

Hare Krishna! Dear Devotees: All good fortune to you!

The hallway floor in the Ladies Ashram looks like something out of a worst scenario ghetto. It sorely needs to be replaced, as in ten years ago! Currently, I was able to paint most of the rooms and that has made a HUGH difference but, when you step out to the hallway, it’s back to the hellish planet. Is there anyone out there who would be so generous as to sponsor a new floor for the Ashram Hallway (or, perhaps, two or three persons together)? Please thinks about it and if you can, find a way to step forward and help create a more civil environment for the ladies who are most often behind the scenes, holding up the fort. You can contact me at malatidevi@aol.com or 304-845-959.1 Thanking you all for giving thought and consideration to this humble request.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada! Dandevats, malati dd

Gauranga Kishore das,USA: Morality, Love, and Srimati Radharani

This is a post that I started a while ago when we had some discussion about the source of morality, I had attempted to answer the Question posed by Socrates in the Euthyphro but hadn't had much luck, and then, what I think is the answer it just kinda hit me. But that was a while ago and I never got around to writing the post, so I thought in honor Srimati Radharani's upcoming appearance day I would finish it as an offering to Her.

Socrates original challenge, which has been a challenge for divine command theories of morality ever since, was "Is something good because the god's love it or do they love it because it is good." And when you ask this question the answer seems obvious that it doesn't just make sense to say something is arbitrarily good because the God/the god's love it.

On the one hand there can't be anything higher than God. But on the other had socrates' question does seem to raise a doubt about God's role in morality. Is morality a separate and higher power than God?

The first question we have to answer is what is morality. I think the simple answer is that morality is an expression of love. It is, as Kant said, treating others as ends in themselves. Or acting selflessly rather than selfishly. Of course morality is an approximation of those ideals that govern our behavior in this world.

Our intuition is that God cannot decree that someone should cause suffering to another, and that it would actually be wrong even if he did. What is this standard that we would judge even God by.

It is love. Which is of course is God's very nature, and of course God would never do anything contrary. But is it true that even He, in all His glory and power, is limited or controlled by love?

In Western philosophy this has seemed like a strange idea that God could be limited or controlled by something else. And it is strange if we think of God in the most simplistic way as the most powerful being, but this is a very limited conception of God. Unfortunately Western philosophy has been limited in its progress the by limited conception of God contained in the Judeo-Christian religious tradtions.

But in the devotional religious traditions of India where Krishna is worshiped as God the idea that God is controlled by love is what makes God so glorious. God is not glorious because He is God, the supreme controller, the creator and destroyer of everything. God is not a cosmic dictator that we must all swear allegiance to or perish. God is all loving, and moreover He is subservient to love. In Gaudiya Vaisnava theology Srimati Radharani is the embodiment of God's loving nature. Together Radha and Krishna, with all their associates, are worshipped as the complete form of God.

There is a story about a great saint named Jayadeva Goswami. He was writing a very special book of poetry called the Gita Govinda in which he was describing the very intimate conjugal pastimes of Radha and Krishna in Vrindavan as he was personally witnessing them in his meditation. He came to one point in his meditation where Radha had become angry and Krishna and stopped talking to Him, and then Jayadev saw Krishna approach Radha and touch her feet and beg forgiveness from her. But he felt that he could not write this down, that it would be inappropriate to show Krishna, God Himself, touching the feet of Radha and begging her forgiveness. So he decided to take a break from writing, it was almost lunch time anyways, so he went down to the river to take his midday bath and do his midday rituals. When He returned home and asked for lunch his wife was quite surprised and told him that she just fed him lunch, and she said that after eating he had gone back to writing. Very bewildered to hear this Jayadev went over to his desk and saw that the verse he had been contemplating was written there. Then he realized that Krishna had personally come disguised as Jayadev and blessed his home by eating there and personally written the verse down.

Krishna is not only subservient to the love of His devotees but He wants to make it known to everyone that He is always controlled by the love of His devotees, especially the love of Srimati Radharani.

When we consider this conception of God it becomes clear that there is no contradiction in seeing that God subservient to His own divine loving nature. This is a philosophical truth and it is expressed practically in His many pastimes of love with His pure devotees.

Jai Sri Radhe!

Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA: How to be free from miseries and anxiety?

As long as the motivation for your activities is your own pleasure, you will find so much pain in your life.

As long as the motivation for your activities is your own happiness, you will find so much distress in your life.

As long as the motivation for your activities is to find honor you will suffer so much dishonor in your life.

Until you work and you act for the pleasure of Krishna you have to suffer the dualities of material existence. So as long as we do what we like to do we should understand that we are extending the perplexities of our own bondage in material existence.

But as soon as we do what Krishna wants us to do, what the great devotees on behalf of Krishna are telling us to do, through that process we gradually become free from all the miseries and anxieties of the material world.

Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA: Forgiveness

Two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey, they had an argument and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand, "today my best friend slapped me in the face".

They kept on walking until they found an oasis where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone, "today my best friend saved my life".

The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "after I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone. Why?" the friend replied, "when someone hurts us we should write it down in sand, where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it".

Learn to write your hurt in the sand of forgiveness and carve the good by others in stone.

Dream and Live

Edmonton/Toronto

Security at the Edmonton Airport was very thorough at their job. Line-ups were slow. In the wake of surging religious zealots in various parts of the world and the ninth anniversary of New York's twin towers going down, it is no wonder. Once through security my three companions and I were glad the tension was over, at least, for us, much less for those screening everyone.

Next to me a nice couple from Edmonton in the plane enroute to Halifax looked down to see the vast number of wind turbines. They were curious and asked if I had seen them before. My response was, "Oh yes, quite close up." But I refrained from telling them that I did indeed walk through the area once as I have much of Canada's major roads. In this case it was the huge wind giants of southern central Ontario that I had witnessed from the ground level.

I did wish to be there instead of in the air. Lately the passion for long distance walking has truly struck me out of sheer love for it. I'm not sure just when the hankering will turn into reality. I haven't yet written a letter to my Australian devotee friends telling them I can't walk Australia next year as MRI scans reveal cartilage wear down and therefore I must reduce extreme daily lengths on foot. I pondered on the fun of the Fijian trek of a year ago.

When I look at a map I lust over the roads not yet trekked and I think of all those souls whom I could still meet and who will eventually chance upon a BBT book for enlightenment. If ever there was to be a serious long walk it would have to be cut down in daily length. 40 kilometers a day won't do anymore. That's just the way it is.

And here's a mild phrase tacked onto the wall of a public washroom while on our trip to Edmonton:

'Dream as if you have forever.

Live as if you only have today.'

The Last Yawn

Edmonton, Alberta

In an unknown to us suburb in Edmonton, Goura and I poked around with several directions guessing where to find a trail of beauty. It seemed like we were surrounded by the burb dynamic, residential road curves, until we came upon some resemblance of a straight path with some vegetation.

We were "doing our rounds"; not a routine walking although our feet were in stride. "Rounds" refers to the chanting on our meditation beads, a strand of 108 beads.. It is our morning ritual and I appreciate Goura's diligence in this regard. Even though Goura's body demands more sleep than mine and even though he may be tired from some physical exertion from the day prior provoking that extra yawn here and there, Goura will rise early enough to be my companion. He religiously chants each day.

I pointed out to him the local ruler's of the low sky. Staying close to the ground, sailing on his wings is the notorious magpie. They are in abundance in this part of Alberta. They seem to party all day and show that some life does in fact grace the Prairies They have a different version of "doing rounds".

And after our walk, as was done in the past few days, our little drama troupe, "Swami Productions", held a morning sadhana which included today a talk about how selfless service can transcend politics and spare someone from insanity. Our host, Nitin, posed great questions about what to do in what seems an undoable circumstance.

Our visit to Edmonton marks the end of our Prairies tour, if you will, and also our season's tour of "Lonely People". To prepare for our last performance, as always, I have our troupe invoke good fortune and blessings by chanting mantras. As we were completing our recitation Goura let out the biggest yawn. It could have rivaled a python's mouth stretch. We giggled.

I am happy to report that no one yawned during the show. Quite the contrary. The audience loved it and became highly animated.

Aboard the Louis S. St-Laurent

STANDING on the deck of this floating laboratory for Arctic science, which is part of Canada's Coast Guard fleet and one of the world's most powerful icebreakers, I can see vivid evidence of climate change. Channels through the Canadian Arctic archipelago that were choked with ice at this time of year two decades ago are now expanses of open water or vast patchworks of tiny islands of melting ice.

In 1994, the "Louie," as the crew calls the ship, and a United States Coast Guard icebreaker, the Polar Sea, smashed their way to the North Pole through thousands of miles of pack ice six- to nine-feet thick. "The sea conditions in the Arctic Ocean were rarely an issue for us in those days, because the thick continuous ice kept waves from forming," Marc Rothwell, the Louie's captain, told me. "Now, there's so much open water that we have to account for heavy swells that undulate through the sea ice. It's almost like a dream: the swells move in slow motion, like nothing I've seen elsewhere."

The Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet, and this summer its sea ice is melting at a near-record pace. The sun is heating the newly open water, so it will take longer to refreeze this winter, and the resulting thinner ice will melt more easily next summer.

At the same time, warm Pacific Ocean water is pulsing through the Bering Strait into the Arctic basin, helping melt a large area of sea ice between Alaska and eastern Siberia. Scientists are just beginning to learn how this exposed water has changed the movement of heat energy and major air currents across the Arctic basin, in turn producing winds that push remaining sea ice down the coasts of Greenland into the Atlantic.

Globally, 2010 is on track to be the warmest year on record. In regions around the world, indications abound that earth's climate is quickly changing, like the devastating mudslides in China and weeks of searing heat in Russia. But in the world's capitals, movement on climate policy has nearly stopped.

Lord Caitanya ordered to go out and preach Krsna consciousness. Not that I stay in Vrndavana, and if anyone comes to me, I will teach. We must go out and go to them. Caitanya Mahaprabhu ordered like that.
