H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 169

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Last night I slept twelve hours, from 7:30 P. M. to 7:30 A.M. When I woke up I had a headache, so there was no question of an early-morning japa session. Throughout the morning, however, I did one thing only; I chanted my sixteen rounds and completed them by noontime, on time for lunch. My body is tired, and I am still recovering from the illness. I had to take a shower sitting down, and I felt relief to be able to bathe after four days. I have to be careful in walking on the stairs so that I don’t trip and fall down. My walking is unsteady, and my joints are unused and weak.

I’m not making my normal format this morning with the japa sections and the Prabhupada smaranam sections.  I don’t have the strength. But what’s easier for me to do and what’s more on my mind is to tell you more reminisces from the hospital.

One of the most provoking things was the needles I got. Many a day: one in the belly, several in the arms, for different purposes. One of the most important ones was, I’m told, called a “port” needle, which reached an artery and then held a bit of blood that was attached to this tube. Through this tube they could re-enter into my blood other substances such as saline or antibiotics without having to enter new needles. But the first port blood shot that I got fell out of my arm after a while,  and it began bleeding down my arm. I called the nurse, and she got another nurse to come to put a new one in. The first one was in the left arm, so the second one they tried on the right arm. But the nurse, an elderly, heavyset woman, tried three times and couldn’t hit a vein. I had never had that experience. Usually every time I have to go to the doctor I have to get blood work done, and it’s always a matter of one shot by a technician to get a vein and to draw blood. But this nurse tried three times and couldn’t find a vein. She said she wasn’t going to try again but was going to get the supervisor. The supervisor, a sophisticated, older-looking woman, came in and said she was good at this. She looked at the back of my hand, which is an unusual spot for someone to give me shots, but I already had so many shots on the other parts of my arm, she thought she would have a better chance. She reached the vein on her first attempt, but it was a little awkwardly placed with a twist in the tube. She taped it down and told me to be very careful not to move my arm so that it would come out. Living with that needle in my arm for a day and a half was a big trial. I was afraid at any moment that it might fall out. And then when I started needing to use the bathroom, I had to move my arm in such a way that I wouldn’t pull out the needle. But there was barely enough room to reach the toilet. Twice in the middle of the night I had to wake Baladeva and have him help me unwind myself from my bedsheets, from two ankle braces that were holding my legs to the bed, and get off my pajamas and wiggle myself into the bathroom without stretching the needle so that it would pull out. Fortunately it didn’t pull out, but each time there was strain on it, it caused me anxiety. That was the experience of living with the “port” needle.
I was visited throughout the day and night by technicians who had to disturb me to take data. It started at 11:00 P.M. when a person would come by to check my vitals. Then at 1:00 A.M. another person came. It wasn’t possible to get solid sleep, plus the fact that there were other noises. All the technicians were polite, and each expressed their personality in different ways. Mostly there were women but a few men. Some of the women were very motherly and even stroked my feet. One of the women was a tough-minded jokester, but affectionate. Some of them were more businesslike without too much effusion, but they all were nice people or had a nice bedside demeanor.

It wasn’t possible for me to chant my gayatris in the hospital. I just didn’t have the presence of mind to note the time of day and to concentrate to say the words in my mind. Similarly, my chanting was not good. I chanted with a clicker, but I couldn’t always see with my poor vision or dark lights what number I was on.

Baladeva has been warning me not to push myself with self-imposed writing quotas. The reason I wound up in the hospital was due to overexertion culminating in the trip to Philadelphia and the lecturing there. Plus other mystifying things that led to my pneumonia. But it’s so important for me to keep in touch with readers that I do want to attempt a semblance of a writing format.

Excerpts from Sri Harinama Cintamani (spoken by Haridasa Thakura to Lord Caitanya and written by Bhaktivinode Thakura):

“Criticism of the Holy Name:

Abhideya:  The Nine Limbs of Devotional Service

“The nine limbs of devotional service are hearing, chanting, remembering, worshiping, praying, rendering service, carrying out the orders of the Lord, being a friend of the Lord and completely surrendering to the Lord. The chanting of the holy name is the most important devotional activity. The Vedas have volumes describing the glories of the holy name.

“The prayojana (necessity) is Krishna-prema
“The jiva must take shelter of the pure devotional process. By the mercy of Lord Krishna he will attain Krishna-prema, or love of Godhead. Pure devotion is indicated by the human proclivity to always render favorable devotional service to Krishna. Pure devotees strive only for further excellence in devotion, being satisfied with nothing else. It is unencumbered by the desire for fruitive action or empirical knowledge. Pure devotion is uncontaminated by fruitive activity or empirical knowledge. The Vedas recommend that one can cultivate pure devotion by taking full shelter of the holy name: this is essential.”

So I beg Krishna’s forgiveness for my hospitalized days in which I was not able to chant my sixteen rounds to completion or with attention. Now today I have returned to my quota, and I hope there will be no difficulty in continuing it and in concentrating on it to improve.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Prabhupada Meditations

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

From Prabhupada Meditations, Volume I:

“I like to remember Srila Prabhupada’s emphasis on the importance of chanting Hare Krishna mantra. When Srila Prabhupada teaches that the topmost stage of God realization can be attained simply by chanting the holy names, we are pleased and convinced. Even though I can’t take up the chanting properly, still it is a solace and inspiration to hear Prabhupada tell us about it. I don’t tire of his repetitions on this theme. It’s a treat to see him spell out the maha-mantra in many Bhaktivedanta purports. Each time he praises the holy names we are reminded, ‘Yes, chant Hare Krishna. Just see how Prabhupada emphasizes it.’

“An outstanding example is in the Eighth Chapter of the Bhagavad-gita, where Lord Krishna teaches Arjuna to ‘remember Me’ at the end of life. Srila Prabhupada explains this remembrance can be attained by chanting. “Therefore the chanting of Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare is the best process for successfully changing one’s state of being at the end of one’s life.” (Bg. 8.6 purport.) As many times as Krishna says, ‘Think of Me,’ Prabhupada reminds us, ‘By chanting Krishna’s names, one will be transferred to the supreme planet Krishna-loka without doubt . . . ’”

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Returning Home

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Returning to my home, my
room, my own chair, after
living in a hospital. It was
like a pleasant jail.
One day Baladeva, as a visitor
to the hospital, was wandering in
the hallways. The nurse told me she
saw him and thought he was me,
and so she said, “I was thinking
of calling for Doctor Jonesy and
telling him to take you down.”
She thought he was me trying to escape.

Now I am free to worship.
I can write about
Radha and Krishna,
I am out of the hospital.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Free Write

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

I’m free to write like a drunken sailor. My chest is wheezing with phlegm. He says I’m looking better, but that may be his way of seeing me. It’s all right to be slowly recuperating. You don’t have to write much every night. But you’d like to be able to. You’d like to be a healthy young boy, bellywhopping on your sleigh down Samson Avenue and making a risky turn at the bottom of the hill at Caton Avenue, right in front of your house. The sled goes all the way down to the bottom of the hill if it’s an icy day. Neighbors coming to see me and ask how I’m doing. Dashing through the woods on a one-horse open sleigh. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.

Jazz musicians expert on their drums, on their horns, but living too fast and too long. Some of them live longer. Trivikram went to Sonny Rollins’ concert and met him backstage and spoke to him. Sonny Rollins said he thought the next life will be better than this one. Reading of soldiers’ lives in World War II. The human element: the anxiety, the fear, the carrying out of duty.

Thank you, Muslim doctor, for deciding to let me go home from the hospital. Thank you, Nurse Jessica, for pushing my release papers through so that I was able to get out early. Now I hope I don’t get into trouble again with bad health, falling unconscious.  You have to take care of yourself. Exercise. Drink plenty of water, a kind of exercise you are capable of.

Try to chant better tomorrow. My kind of activity is mostly sedentary. I have to reach for something to write. A literature of reflection and recovery. I called myself an old man once. The hospital psychiatrist then said seventy-one years is not so old. She said I looked younger. “Seventy-one isn’t old. What are you going to do when you’re eighty-one years old?” Encouraging words. Sonny Rollins keeps playing tenor sax in his seventies. The journalist’s tale of a bombing mission. You never wrote about the mission on the Saratoga. You were too rebellious and aloof from the actual mission of the ship. Now I’m a journalist, not for ISKCON’s mission or a department of ISKCON. I write of one person and his journey, and I hope it helps others.

Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: bookdistribution in Bangladesh

For the BD conference

At the end of November we held an an istha ghosthi with the department leaders of our Swamibag temple in Dhaka/Bangladesh to prepare for the upcoming Prabhupada marathon. I appealed to everyone assembled to make some little extra endeavor for the marathon to distribute Prabhupada's books more widely, and we decided to read for a few minutes every morning after mangal artik from the wonderful book "The Nectar of Book Distribution" in order to help our devotees to cultivate Sankirtan consciousness.

I myself had promised to our two traveling Sankirtan parties to accompany them for some days. It would be nice for me to get out there and help to distribute some books, and I might be able to give some little inspiration to the devotees, demonstrating with my personal example that book distribution is indeed a very important service which is so pleasing to Srila Prabhupada.

We spent one week traveling from town to town, distributing Bhagavad Gita's.

In every place we could find congregational devotees or 'Krsna's friends' who eagerly welcomed us to stay overnight in their homes. Lilakanta Krsna Prabhu who is usually cooking for me had agreed to come along, ensuring that I would get my regular light and simple prasad without chili. Since book distribution is not firmly established throughout Bangladesh, the devotees of other yatra's don't mind us coming to their area to distribute. Infact they are even willing to take us to their congregational members and favorable people and introduce us, and we were selling lots of BG's to them. And at the same time they are learning the art of distributing books.

Fortunately Krsna was so kind to speak Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna during the Prabhupada marathon - this year Gita Jayanti falls on the 17th of December!

I simply can't take this to be a coincidence! Surely Krsna would have known already five thousand years ago that He would have to request Srila Prabhupada to take birth in this world to spread the knowledge of BG all over the world, and He would have known that the Western world would be Christian at this time, and Prabhupada would establish the book marathon during the month of December to use the Xmas madness to distribute more books. So maybe therefore Krsna chose to speak BG during the time of December - so it would help the devotees in the Eastern world to distribute lots of books for the Prabhupada marathon....! And in this part of the world Gita Jayanti is indeed an excellent line for book distribution. We try to inspire people to not only buy one BG, but many in order to distribute them to friends, neighbors, collegues and customers. In this way they can get Krsna's and Prabhupada's mercy during this month of Gita Jayanti - by engaging in book distribution themselves. And it really works! Many people bought five or ten books, and one cloth merchant even agreed to buy 108 BG's - the "lucky number"! In great jubilation we carried the boxes of BG's into his house, performed artik to one book, and afterwards I signed it with "Always chant Hare Krishna and be happy"! Everybody was very joyful and fully satisfied.

Some evenings the devotees had arranged little programs for us, which were centered around book distribution. We would start with tulasi puja and Gaur artik kirtan, then I would give a little speech about the importance of Srila Prabhupada's books, finally requesting everyone to come forward to buy some BG's and offering to sign the book with blessings. Some programs we sold fourty BG's within one hour!

The devotees had arranged for ten thousand BG's thinking this would be enough for the Bangladeshi yatra for the whole marathon. But after two weeks these ten thousand books were already distributed - not only by our Swamibag devotees, but also by other yatras, who eagerly followed our example. So more BG's had to be ordered from Mayapur. After three weeks our traveling Sankirtan devotees had distributed more than four thousand BG's - an average of more than two hundred per day....! And of course they also distributed smaller books and sets of SB and CC.

And of course all the Swamibag departments also are distributing lots of books - the exact scores are not even recorded. Our temple property is decorated with nice posters promoting book distribution - downloaded from Vaisnavaseva Prabhu's desiretree website. It helps to cultivate Sankirtan consciousness.

Who would have ever thought that Bangladesh, being a Muslim country is one of the best places for book distribution on this planet....!

Your servant, Devaki dd

ISKCON News.com: Vaishnava Care: A Russian Tale of True Christmas Spirit

By Madhava Smullen on 24 Dec 2010
Bhaktimati and her mother

During this time of year, we are all aware to some degree of the idea of “Christmas spirit,” of making some endeavor to give to others in the season of goodwill. But few of us embody this caring spirit as much as a quiet, uncelebrated group of Russian devotees did this winter.

Kripamoya dasa, UK: Special Christmas Eve treat: Christmas pudding halavah

One old tradition in England is that we English like to eat a mixed dried-fruit pudding every Christmas. Known as Christmas Pudding or sometimes Plum Pudding, it is a staple part of the Christmas dinner. Our devotees Candra Mohini and Madhurya Gaurangi thought that since it was the day before Christmas – known as Christmas Eve – they would invite the people of Norwich to sample a Vaishnava version of this pudding, so they cooked up two large batches of halava with dried fruits, nuts and crystallized ginger. Served steaming hot in traditional Indian leaf cups with wooden spoons, the passers-by loved it. Five hundred cups were served at the end of the afternoon and many invitations to local meetings distributed while the maha-mantra played sweetly from a sound system.

Many people came back for second helpings and the Christian vicar and the elderly Christian preacher with his sign-board cart all enjoyed the unusual seasonal fare.

ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Today's Darsana

25/12/10
Hari Christmas everyone!

May the true spirit of Christmas which is genuine compassion, humility and forgiveness govern our hearts on this day especially.

Lord Jesus Christ has been declared 'a real vaisnava' by Srila Prabhupada on many occasions;
Prabhupada would call Jesus 'my guru', as confirmed again this morning by Vaiyasaki Prabhu in Srimad Bhagavatam class.

Here is the
slideshow of the Deities playing Their part in the traditional mood of Christmas, dressed in red and green.
They have a beautiful gift for us: the darsana of the sweet lotus feet of Sri Sri Jaganatha and Balarama!

We also celebrate the glorious disappearance of another great saint, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada;
we are observing a half-day fast in his honour.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Srila Bhaktisiddhanta wanted preaching

Our preachers are Visnudutas, just to give protection to any person who is slightly inclined to worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is pancaratra-vidhi. We shall give all help, all assistance, to such persons. That is our business. It is not sleeping business, it is not lazying business. We should be always active. We shall always make plan, think how to protect this miserable condition of the material... They cannot understand. They are fools. They are rascals. So you have to give them knowledge. You have to give them help. That is missionary activity. Missionary activity is not laziness or sleeping. My Guru Maharaja used to say that prana ache yara sei hetu pracara, that "I have got some dozens of disciples, and I have got a temple, and people are contributing. Now I have got good arrangement for eating and sleeping. Now I am perfect. Because I am getting some food without any work, and honor, then I am perfect." This is not the mentality. Prana ache yara. You must be engaged continually for these missionary activity. The Gaudiya Mission has failed in preaching work because they adopted this principle. As soon as they got a little shelter under the name of Matha, or temple, and a few dozen of..., not few dozen, one dozen, then he is settled up there. Now he is bhajana, "Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna," showing that he is very great chanter. And what is your preaching? Lord Caitanya ordered you prthivite ache yata nagaradi. Why don't you go? How you are Indian? Therefore my Guru Maharaja condemned this policy. Mana tumi kisera vaisnava: "What kind of Vaisnava you are?" Pratisthara tare nirjanera ghare: "And simply for cheap popularity, 'Oh, he is a Vaisnava. He is chanting. All right.' " Pratisthara tare nirjanera ghare tava hari..., nirjanera ghare. No botheration, because if there is no preaching, there is no botheration. You can sit down and show people, "I have now become a very liberated soul," and chant and meditate. That means sleeping. This sort of business is condemned by my Guru Maharaja. Pratisthara tare nirjanera ghare tava hari-nama kevala. This is simply cheating. He did not approve this kind of business. He did not approve. He wanted to see that everyone is engaged in preaching work, some sort of preaching work, either indoor or outdoor. When you are indoor you have to be busy writing articles for a magazine and proofread and so many things indoors. And outdoors you have to go door to door, make them members, make them interested in this movement, collect money for expenses, outdoor. Preaching, you have to meet opposing elements. So many will criticize, so many will attack. Nityananda Prabhu was hurt personally, but still, outdoor. This is missionary work, not that "Whenever I find some opportunity, go to some solitary place and sleep." This is not missionary life. So we should adjust things, not that "All right, it is going on. That's all." You have got very responsible business, this Krsna consciousness. It is genuine, it is authorized, and Lord Caitanya wants us to do it all over the world. The things should be adjusted and keep us always alive to our self responsibility. That is missionary life...

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Fw: Kashi yatra ?

Varanasi is a major holy place, venerated by all members of Vedic culture, including Vaisnavas, but particularly by Saivas and votaries of Ramacaritamanasa. Although the devotee Candrasekhara expressed unhappiness in residing there (Cc Madhya 17.95) this was not because he perceived any inherent fault in Varanasi, but because of the preponderance of Mayavadis there.

ISKCON News.com: Pedofile Priests, ISKCON, and Sentimentalized Compassion

By Kripamoya Das for deshika.wordpress.com on 20 Dec 2010

The ancient Greeks said that even virtues, when overly applied (and in the wrong circumstances) can become vices, and do a lot of harm. Compassion is one of the virtues, and its a great virtue; indeed. However, there is a time for compassionate action to become transformed to measures of discipline, so that a person may ultimately improve themselves, and that others may be protected.

H.H. Prahladananda Swami: Lecture – BG 15.8 Guna Vision – Video

posted by

Arkadiusz108 | October 28, 2010 | Dni Kultury Wedyjskiej – Prahladananda Swami

on 2010-05-01 Wroclaw Poland

Bhagavad-gita As It Is 15.8

sariram yad avapnoti

yac capy utkramatisvarah

grihitvaitani samyati

vayur gandhan ivasayat

TRANSLATION

The living entity in the material world carries his different conceptions of life from one body to another as the air carries aromas. Thus he takes one kind of body and again quits it to take another.

PURPORT

Here the living entity is described as isvara, the controller of his own body. If he likes, he can change his body to a higher grade, and if he likes he can move to a lower class. Minute independence is there. The change his body undergoes depends upon him. At the time of death, the consciousness he has created will carry him on to the next type of body. If he has made his consciousness like that of a cat or dog, he is sure to change to a cat’s or dog’s body. And if he has fixed his consciousness on godly qualities, he will change into the form of a demigod. And if he is in Krishna consciousness, he will be transferred to Krishnaloka in the spiritual world and will associate with Krishna. It is a false claim that after the annihilation of this body everything is finished. The individual soul is transmigrating from one body to another, and his present body and present activities are the background of his next body. One gets a different body according to karma, and he has to quit this body in due course. It is stated here that the subtle body, which carries the conception of the next body, develops another body in the next life. This process of transmigrating from one body to another and struggling while in the body is called karshati, or struggle for existence.

Sutapa das, BV Manor, UK: Rolling Stones

This month has been an interesting one to say the least. While I’ve been ‘off the grid’ with regards to the e-world, I’ve been very much ‘on the grid’ in terms of the real world. Along with my good friends Sundara and Vicaru, we embarked on a month-long project to share the ancient wisdom literature of the Vedas with as many people as possible. The rough route - London - Norwich - Birmingham - Manchester - Sheffield - Nottingham - Leicester - Northampton - London. We clocked around 1600 miles in just over 3 weeks (that’s the distance to Moscow, Russia!)

Although the temperatures were cold (-10 at one point), the wonderful experiences and interactions with different individuals warmed my heart. The purpose was to share wisdom with others, but at the end of each day I felt as though it was me who was learning so much from them! Even though many of them had not read into the Vedas, their insights, personalities and ways of living were so reminiscent of those teachings. The opportunity to travel to far-flung places and meet so many interesting individuals from diverse backgrounds is undoubtedly a priceless one.

One of the best perks of being a monk is this freedom to “keep the wheels turning”. In fact, ancient scriptures enjoin it as the duty of renunciates to keep traveling, lest they become attached and entangled in temporal situations. To this day, itinerants in India are careful not to even sleep under the same tree for two nights in a row. We come into this world empty, we leave empty, and in the middle we must be cautious to remain unattached. This world, after all, is just like an airport transit lounge... and baggage restrictions are extremely strict.

Speaking of airports, on Tuesday I fly to India for a month of reflection, introspection and spiritual retreat. The travels continue. As they say, a rolling stone gathers no moss...

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Recipe : Gluten Free / Vegan / Banana Avocado Quick Bread

Rough Sliced : Better to wait until cooled. See the leaves? It's finally autumn in Florida!

Bananas. I always buy them, thinking they are the perfect snack to have on hand for my hungry children and their visiting friends. But, when faced with the choice of a brownie or a banana, what do you think most kids choose?

No worries. I get other fruit into these guys. But that does leave me trying to figure out what to do with all those bananas. We’ve done banana nut chip cookies, banana cake donuts, gluten free buckwheat muffins and of course, regular banana bread.

After surveying the ingredients in my cupboards–of which there are not many–I decided to convert a stand-by quick bread recipe to a gluten free version. My bulk section is running low, but I do have a bag of rice flour. The rice flour isn’t going anywhere; I have no plans for it so might as well use it up. Additionally, I had a few avocados sitting in the fridge, making it their longtime home. After reading all these crazy vegan egg nog recipes incorporating avocados, I decided to put them to work in a  quick bread of unwanted ingredients.

The result was quite desirable!

Moms and kids (and even Dads) quite enjoyed it. The flavor of the avocado is undetectable and the final product is sweet and moist. And, well, I guess a little bit healthy. This gluten free / vegan quick bread definitely falls into the category of “easy bake,” so go ahead and give your digestion a break while loading up on potassium, vitamin C, fiber and iron.

Recipe below…

Ripe Bananas + Ripe Avocados

Mix-a-mix-a-mix-a

Oven ready.

Pack 'n' Play : The out of the oven, uncooled quick bread packed up for a play date--letting off some steam sans lids.

Equipment

  • potato masher/food processor/hand or stand mixer
  • mixing bowl
  • measuring spoons
  • measuring cups
  • 2 loaf pans
  • parchment paper
  • oven

Ingredients

  • 6 ripe bananas
  • 3 ripe haas avocados
  • 4.5 cups rice flour
  • 1/2 c olive oil (or other quality oil)
  • 2.5 cups sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon powdered ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • pinch o’ salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1.5 tablespoon baking powder

Second loaf, cooled.

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees
  • Mash bananas and avocado with a potato masher, in a food processor or with a fork. If really soft, you can use a hand or stand mixer.
  • Add remaining ingredients, sifting in baking powder and baking soda so that there are no clumpies.
  • Combine using whisk, mixer or food processor.
  • Line 2 loaf pans with parchment paper.
  • Evenly divide mixture into loaf pans. Mixture will be thick.
  • Reduce oven to 350 degrees and insert loaf pans into oven.
  • Bake 35-40 minutes or until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean.
  • Lift bread out of pan by edges of parchment. Cool on wire rack and then slice and serve.

Once cooled, this loaf slices perfectly.

Notes

  • I already began using the stand mixer before I realized my avocado was not as soft as I anticipated. Being lazy, I did not hand mash avocado, so my end product had visible avocado bits. Not a big deal but next time will make sure that avocado is better mushed up.
  • If your bananas are very ripe, you may want to reduce the sugar a 1/2 cup. My results were very sweet. Our family likes that.
  • Omit cardamom if you hate it. Which I can’t understand why you would.
  • Virgin coconut oil would be lovely.
  • Chopped nuts or dried fruit can easily be added to the mix.
  • For extra crunchy sugary sweetness, sprinkle turbinado sugar on top before placing in oven.

Kripamoya dasa, UK: Second Krishna-Avanti school to open in Leicester, UK

Evington Hall, Leicester, in the Midlands region of Britain, around 100 miles north of London. Evington Hall was built in 1830

LEICESTER’S FIRST HINDU SCHOOL
TO OPEN AT EVINGTON HALL

The I-Foundation has unveiled Evington Hall on Spencefield Lane in Evington as the site of Leicester’s first Hindu state school.  The school will open next September and is currently accepting applications for its first sixty reception-aged pupils, until 15th January 2011.

When it opens, the Krishna-Avanti Primary School, Leicester, will become the UK’s first cross-community Hindu school, providing a Hindu ethos but with half its places allocated purely on the distance that parents live from the school, regardless of their faith.  Opening year by year, it will grow by 2018 to provide 420 places for children aged 4-11 years old.

The school – which is being modelled on the hugely successful Krishna-Avanti Primary School in Harrow (North London) – is expected to appeal to both Hindus and non-Hindus alike.  The Harrow school – now in its third year - has five applicants for every one place, having won a number of awards and following its recent Ofsted report, which praised its “many outstanding features”.

Contracts were exchanged on the grade II listed building yesterday (23rd December) and the sale will be completed early in the New Year.  Set in five acres of grounds – which will provide room for a large playground and extensive playing fields – Evington Hall was, until 2007, home to the Leicester Grammar Junior School.

A major refurbishment will be undertaken to provide state-of-the-art facilities throughout the school, including the latest IT and sports equipment, as well as a brand new vegetarian kitchen.  The playground will receive a major overhaul, with the introduction of new climbing frames, outside toys and soft surfaces.

The I-Foundation, the educational charity behind the school, is currently engaged in a global hunt for its first headteacher and, with the purchase of the site, the key components are now in place for the school to open for its first cohort of students in September 2011.

Commenting on the purchase, I-Foundation Project Director, Pradip Gajjar, says:

“This is a major step forward for us.  The fact that we will be able to takeover a building which was, until as recently as three years ago, a fully functioning school means that we could open our doors tomorrow if we had to.

“As the Government releases funding, we will be able to undertake a full refurbishment, to turn what is already a beautiful site into a flagship school for Leicester and the Hindu community.”

For more information about the school and to find out how to submit an application, go to www.krishna-avanti-leicester.org.uk.

ENDS

For further information please call Ben Rich on 07713 509134 or email ben@benrich.co.uk

There will be tour of the site, together with a full media briefing, early in the New Year.  This is provisionally fixed for 7th January 2011 and the exact arrangements will be confirmed nearer the time.

NOTES

Evington Hall is built on land which, in the 12th century, formed part of the estate of Sir Richard de Grey, the Constable of Dover Castle.  In 1616, it was sold to William Cavendish, Earl of Devonshire, whose family in turn sold it to Dr. James Sherrard of Eltham.  When he died in 1737, the estate was divided between Dr Sherrard’s five nieces, including Ann Coleman of Market Harborough.  It was her descendent, Henry Coleman, who built Evington Hall in about 1830 and who later becoming High Sheriff of Leicestershire.

The Hall remained as a private home until the early 1900s, when it was purchased as a Convent.  It then became a girls’ Catholic boarding school, which was attended by the sister of current Evington Ward councillor, Michael Johnson.  It was sold again, becoming Leicester Grammar Junior School.  When LGJS merged with the senior school, the new purchasers put forward plans to develop the site for housing.  The latest purchase by the I-Foundation, however, means that the Hall will retain its community use for the foreseeable future.

Forces United

Victoria, Vancouver Island

It seemed that various forces came together to form a truce. At least you can say the brahminical and ksatriya forces united. Let me explain.

At the home of a Guatemala family, (Guatemala has its share of civil war issues) my brother Paul came to see me. Paul is a retired naval officer. Also Sydney Hart, a dear friend of mine, who retired from the army, showed up for our gathering of peace makers. I shouldn't fail to mention my dear God-sister, Radhika, origins-Holland, who declares herself as a war baby. Born in 1941, (and looking well) she remembers the bombs of World War Two. Whether civilian or a member of the official forces, all delegates came together to chant mantras.

Oh! I almost forgot to mention the brahminical force (priestly power). That would be represented by myself, being the swami in attendance, along with Jaya Govinda, a duly second-initiated brahmin from our Vancouver temple. We would be traditionally regarded as the pro-active spiritual teachers in a Vedic context. The other boys of regimentation mentioned above would be ksatriya; reactive martial protectors. How else to see this coming together of the forces? Well, soft and hardware dynamics perhaps.

In any event, forces united with a spiritual intent. I was proud of my brother who belched out the Maha-mantra "Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare" over my drumming when it came to his turn to lead the chant. Never would they allow that while on duty on a naval ship.

Albert, a martial artist from the Philippines, was present. He delighted in this soft approach against the enemy. Others were there also who engaged in the strategic attack against the identified foe, Maya (the illusory world).

The fact of the matter is that we all have little demons within us. The Bhagavad-gita identifies the enemies as lust, anger, and greed. Most of us will admit that there has been some kind of infiltration of the little devils.

That is why forces of various kinds united. There was a genuine interest to strive for peace on earth and good will towards all. At least in our little corner of a modest apartment at the far reaches of the western hemisphere, we were feeling our peace. It was not an official gathering of sorts; just a collection of calm comrades. It would be nice to see more of this type of thing going on.

Seasons Greetings! Namaste!

ISKCON News.com: World Leadership: Where Are We Going?

By Sesa Das for ISKCON News on 24 Dec 2010

My fellow Americans it’s time to face the truth, the era of the lead-dog is over. As described by Srila Prabhupada, world leadership today requires a collaborative effort: “The blind man of the Western countries and the lame man of India should combine together in this Krishna consciousness movement. The material advancement of the Western countries and the spiritual assets of India should combine for the elevation of all human society.”

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: Marathon - Daily Update & Inspiration

"Rise and Shine! Santa Clause has personally employed you to distribute presents from the spiritual world today - books, prasad candies, smiles and happiness. Join the sankirtan party at the Dufferin Mall TODAY at 12 noon till about 4pm! Yummy prasad served afterwards"

With unwaivering enthusiasm several devotees continue to head out everyday in spite of the extreme cold! Yesterday a team of about 8 young devotees (who are offschool or work now) went out to Yonge and Eglinton (which we only later found out is the coldest area in the city because of the windtunnel effect!!!)They distributed several books and befriended manymore people.

Today is the last day of big-pre-christmas shopping and we will besetting up our sankirtan party outside the Dufferin Mall at Bloor andDufferin from 12 till whenever we can. And delicious warm prasadamwill be served afterwards.

Our scores as of the eod yesterday were 4316 books! We only have 8more days and we need 684 books!Do you think we will meet/beat ourgoals? Please join in...the final leg of the marathon has started! Weneed ALL your help, prayers and blessings.

Looking forward to serving Srila Prabhupada with you!

Inspiration for the dayThis is an example in preaching. Āpani ācari' bhakti śikhāimu sabāre.Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu teaches us that those whom preachers meet arealmost all offenders who are opposed to Krsna consciousness, but itis a preacher's duty to convince them of the Krsna consciousnessmovement and then induce them to chant the Hare Krsna mahā-mantra.Our propagation of the sańkīrtana movement is continuing, despite manyopponents, and people are taking up this chanting process even inremote parts of the world like Africa. By inducing the offenders tochant the Hare Krsna mantra, Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu exemplifiedthe success of the Krsna consciousness movement. We should followvery respectfully in the footsteps of Lord Caitanya, and there is nodoubt that we shall be successful in our attempts.CC Adi 7.150
