Akrura das, Gita Coaching: IF YOU WANT FRUITS WATER THE ROOTS

If you water the root of a tree, all the branches and leaves and flowers will be nourished and will give fruits.

Similarly, if you want to achieve results in any area, find out what foundation you need.

For example, if you want to be a successful devotee or a bhakti yogi, you have to master the chanting of the holy names of the Lord and understand and follow the Bhagavad Gita As It Is.

The principle is: always get back to basics, again and again. When the basics are in place, possibilities for development and success are manifold.

Hearing and chanting about Krsna are the basics for devotee's success. By hearing and chanting, the devotional creeper, bhakti lata, is watered and nourished. And by deliberate spiritual intelligence and the sword of knowledge, the weeds of unwanted habits and qualities are being removed regularly.

"This year another abhisek of Lord Nrsimha took place over a two day period, oils on one day and milk products and sweet fruit juice liquids on the next. Buckets of offerings were poured onto the Lord, marking another year of protection for the work in Mayapur, what to speak of the Iskcon collective. One can not help but appreciate the satisfaction that Lord has had as the best of milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juice happened to fall into His mouth and splash or ooze out the other side on such a hot humid day. Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: Executing the will of the spiritual master...

SB 4.28.51 purport

After the death of Maharaja Pandu, his wives settled that one should remain and the other should go. Madri would perish with her husband in the fire, and Kunti would remain to take charge of the five Pandava children. Even as late as 1936 we saw a devoted wife voluntarily enter the fire of her husband. This indicates that a devotee's wife must be prepared to act in such a way. Similarly, a devoted disciple of the spiritual master would rather die with the spiritual master than fail to execute the spiritual master's mission. As the Supreme Personality of Godhead comes down upon this earth to reestablish the principles of religion, so His representative, the spiritual master, also comes to reestablish religious principles. It is the duty of the disciples to take charge of the mission of the spiritual master and execute it properly. Otherwise the disciple should decide to die along with the spiritual master. In other words, to execute the will of the spiritual master, the disciple should be prepared to lay down his life and abandon all personal considerations.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: NOTES FROM A FRIEND

It is not that only spiritual advancement is important. Sometimes we need to sort out in our head head our health, our family and other factors.

How can I work on my spirituality if I am burdened with other things?

First be a human, then a devotee.

How can we develop characteristics of a devotee, if we have no humanity in life, and we cannot deny that we do not live where we live.

There are no devotees and non-devotees, just particles of Krsna, His creatures, some of them in a human form.

In order to help a person we should see him as a whole.

When a person seeks help do not push him away because he does not talk about spiritual topics. Help is help.

Help people in all aspects as they are closely linked to their spiritual progress.

To help their spiritual progress, help them to establish their internal balance between good and less good.

Then the person will be open to receive spiritual knowledge.

If he is quiet and calm, naturally he will be able to listen, change and improve.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: we must hear

... we have to purify ourself. The prescription is there, very simple thing, to become purified, srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah punya-sravana-kirtanah [SB 1.2.17]. If we simply recite all these mantras... The Srimad-Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-gita, all these slokas, they're all mantras, just like as good as Hare Krsna mantra. There is no difference. So if we hear... That is the prescription given by Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and we are trying to introduce this.....It is not that everyone will understand each word, but simply if he hears, it will be beneficial, the mantra. Simply if one hears Hare Krsna mantra chanting, he'll be purified. If he hears this mantra, a verse from Bhagavad-gita, a verse from Srimad-Bhagavatam, attentively, even he does not understand the meaning, the purport, still, he'll get benefit. That is the way. So we must hear...

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: '451' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

4:00 A.M.

Last night I had no headache and slept well. I woke up without a headache and began chanting. My first four rounds were very slow and distracted, but then I perked up and chanted the next four fast like a jackrabbit. So I've chanted eight rounds, but I'm not very satisfied with them. I've stopped chanting because I'll go on to my writing now and try to get that done early. When I complained to Baladeva that I was chanting slowly he said, "Slow and steady wins the race." He said his mother always told him that. I know that quality is what counts, more than the jackrabbit speed, but the spaced out slowness is no good either. It seems this morning I've had either one extreme or the other. Now I have to get a grip on myself and do the rounds with concentration on the meanings of the names and with feelings of devotion. Those are the real essences, not just speed or lack of speed.

First you were the turtle,
then you were the hare.
The point is to chant
evenly with attention
to the prayer. And so
I'll do it rightly with
my consciousness fixed
holy and let the speed
take care of itself.
Remember what the
Swami taught you,
whose names you're
chanting and the importance
of doing it with priti,
love. The mechanics
are the side-issue and
the quality is the
heart of it.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Prabhupada Accepting Disciples' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Prabhupada Smaranam

Prabhupada is chanting on the beads of an initiate. His tall secretary, Pradyumna, stands beside him. It is a small temple somewhere on his world travels. Prabhupada travels around the world and initiates qualified persons with the diksa-mantra. In the early years, when there were not too many devotees in an initiation, he would chant on each disciple's beads individually. These beads appear to belong to a woman devotee who is sitting before him waiting in loving anticipation for him to complete the round and hand her the eternally blessed japa-mala. The mood is subdued and patient, but ecstatic. Prabhupada has kindly come to this place to take souls to Krishna in the Gaudiya sampradaya. She will repeat out loud her vow to follow the four rules, and he will give her her spiritual Sanskrit name, ______ Devi-dasi. It appears to be the early years, when the girls and boys were wearing plain saffron colors. Prabhupada is not rushing through the ritual but carefully chanting in his own voice a complete round of 108 beads.

A spiritual master is advised not to accept many disciples because if they do not follow, he has to accept the burden. One of the offenses in chanting is to give the holy names to faithless persons. But Srila Jiva Gosvami states (as quoted in Nectar of Devotion) that the Krishna consciousness movement must be increased. So the bona fide spiritual master takes the risk and accepts many disciples in a compassionate mood. Because he is vigorously and sincerely preaching, Krishna protects him from any reaction from unfaithful disciples. At the time of initiation the disciples are usually very dedicated and enthusiastic. They just have to keep their determination, and if they try, Krishna will help them to become lifelong faithful disciples.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Praying for Faith in My Lord' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

1.
My head is calm.
Now if I can only think
of some pastimes of my Lord,
I can make a decent poem.

Turn to the many lessons, readings,
and live and recorded lectures
and talks I've heard from the
lotus mouth of my spiritual
master, Srila Prabhupada.

From the very beginning, he did
not hesitate to tell us of
Krishna, the Supreme Personality
of Godhead. He defended,
with theology and faith and
logic, how God can be a
person in a humanlike
form, and yet, His energies
and expansions encompass
all existence. I accepted it
as true, and it has
become matter of fact
reality despite the
inconceivable nature
of His position.

He does not tally with the
limited reality of persons and
expressions that we know in this
world. As Jiva Gosvami
says, unless you accept
God's inconceivable nature
you can't understand Him
a whit. He's beyond the
normal ken.

My realized knowledge of God,
what He's permitted me to see,
doesn't go very deep
or clear, but I possess
a simple faith in
Gurudeva and that goes
to my core.

2.
Krishna's pastimes are not
mythological stories but actual
adventures He performs in
Goloka and in Gokula when
He comes here. He acts
as a little child but
shows His mother all
the universes in His opened
mouth.
As an infant, He sucks out
the poison and life air of a
gigantic witch, Putana, and
His kinsmen can't even believe
it was done by their child.
They take it otherwise.

But sometimes His feats are so
obviously, perceivably miraculous
that they can't brush it off
as the work of Vishnu or
the fact that Krishna was
saved by His own piety.
This happened when He lifted
the Govardhana mountain on His left
pinky when He was only seven
years old. For seven days He
sheltered all the residents of
Vraja, and they were forced
to inquire from Krishna's
father, Nanda, "What is
the nature of your child? Sometimes
He appears to be a baby in need of
coddling and instruction but
then we see Him lift a mountain!
Just who is He?"

Nanda told them what
the astrologer Garga had
predicted at His name-giving
ceremony, that "This child
will be as good as Narayana."
And so they accepted it
although they mainly reverted
to treating Him as their
beloved son or friend or
lover because that was more
believable and relishable
to them.

I accept Krishna in both ways,
as Almighty and as an
adolescent, an enchanting
youth. I pray for
non-sectarian, deep
faith. I pray to say His
names earnestly and
turn to Him to take me
at my death. Please
Lord, let me be a staunch
believer in You
and Radha and the whole
spiritual realm and give me
the inspiration to
join You there.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'The Holy Cow' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Free write

They have brought a calf into a clean building used by humans. They have put garlands around his neck and want him to take part in a religious ceremony. His hooves are awkward on the marble floor, and he may get nervous and even pass stool or urine indoors, which would be an embarrassment. Of course, if the Lord personally arranges for the calf to take part, it will go smoothly. In general, however, the calf is more at home outdoors as in the second picture, where he is snuggled in some hay with his mother nearby. But the devotees sometimes drag a calf into the temple to show they have affection for them and consider their presence in a yajna important and symbolic. Whether indoors or out, the calves and cows are important animals in Vedic culture, and the devotees wish to make this known. This is done not just by a token appearance of a calf but by describing their importance and actually engaging her in practical service. Every creature has a dharma or occupational duty, but the duty of a wolf or tiger is not very useful to human society or religious activity. By contrast, the cow—which is not an animal that can defend itself well—should be protected and utilized by humans in the service of Krishna.

Cows give milk, one of the most important foods for human consumption. A cow gives much more milk than is needed by its offspring of a couple of calves, and this should be collected for the service of Krishna. It should be offered to Krishna as milk, or cooked in milk preparations, and the remnants should be distributed for human consumption. Even the dung of cows is useful in house walls or floors or as fuel for cooking.

Cows and calves should never be killed and their flesh eaten. This is a highly irreligious act, and cow slaughter incurs widespread bad karma for human civilization when it is indulged in. Aside from the practical usefulness of cows, they are dear to Krishna and are His favorite animal kept in the spiritual world. Krishna is called Govinda, the lover of the cows, and He does not tolerate their mistreatment. We can just imagine the scope of the ghastly reaction that is occurring in human society as a result of the huge amount of cow slaughter that goes on daily due to the fastidious tongues of the meat-eaters.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: SOPHISTICATED EXCUSES

We all have various excuses as to why we are not more happy within and more productive without.

There are simple excuses like: I am not good enough, I have no skills, I am not qualified, Who am I to do this, Who am I to say something. These are more or less obvious.

There are also more sophisticated excuses that is much harder to get free from. They seem to be based on logic and reason and even on Krsna conscious philosophy, Vedic knowledge or scripture.

It is much harder to get rid of them.

Here are some examples: I don't know if Krsna wants me to do this, I wait to see what Krsna wants me to do, I am humble therefore I do not want to take a position of responsibility, I am waiting for Krsna's sign.

What are your favorite excuses? Write them down and read them out loud. It will give you some important insight into how you think against your own interest.

Instead of saying why something meaningful or valuable that you want to do cannot be done, try finding reasons why it can be done.

We have a choice. We can have excuses in our lives or we can have results. If we want results we need to stop making excuses and start setting goals, making action plans and taking action.

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: Rise Of The Superweeds

To read the full article from the New York Times, click here.

Roundup — originally made by Monsanto but now also sold by others under the generic name glyphosate — has been little short of a miracle chemical for farmers. It kills a broad spectrum of weeds, is easy and safe to work with, and breaks down quickly, reducing its environmental impact.

Sales took off in the late 1990s, after Monsanto created its brand of Roundup Ready crops that were genetically modified to tolerate the chemical, allowing farmers to spray their fields to kill the weeds while leaving the crop unharmed. Today, Roundup Ready crops account for about 90 percent of the soybeans and 70 percent of the corn and cotton grown in the United States.

But farmers sprayed so much Roundup that weeds quickly evolved to survive it. "What we're talking about here is Darwinian evolution in fast-forward," Mike Owen, a weed scientist at Iowa State University, said.

Now, Roundup-resistant weeds like horseweed and giant ragweed are forcing farmers to go back to more expensive techniques that they had long ago abandoned.

Mr. Anderson, the farmer, is wrestling with a particularly tenacious species of glyphosate-resistant pest called Palmer amaranth, or pigweed, whose resistant form began seriously infesting farms in western Tennessee only last year.

Pigweed can grow three inches a day and reach seven feet or more, choking out crops; it is so sturdy that it can damage harvesting equipment. In an attempt to kill the pest before it becomes that big, Mr. Anderson and his neighbors are plowing their fields and mixing herbicides into the soil.

That threatens to reverse one of the agricultural advances bolstered by the Roundup revolution: minimum-till farming. By combining Roundup and Roundup Ready crops, farmers did not have to plow under the weeds to control them. That reduced erosion, the runoff of chemicals into waterways and the use of fuel for tractors.

If frequent plowing becomes necessary again, "that is certainly a major concern for our environment," Ken Smith, a weed scientist at the University of Arkansas, said. In addition, some critics of genetically engineered crops say that the use of extra herbicides, including some old ones that are less environmentally tolerable than Roundup, belies the claims made by the biotechnology industry that its crops would be better for the environment.

"The biotech industry is taking us into a more pesticide-dependent agriculture when they've always promised, and we need to be going in, the opposite direction," said Bill Freese, a science policy analyst for the Center for Food Safety in Washington.
