ISKCON was honoured with various gifts at this Summit, for the movement's selfless efforts in creating an awakening about and preserving Sanatana Dharma in the worldwide media. Sutapa das, BV Manor, UK: Chapter One - D.O.U.B.T

Our spiritual journey usually starts with a doubt. Friends, family, society and the media, paint the perfect picture of 'success', and we subsequently shape our lives around that image. At a certain point, however, we may question whether that picture will actually bring happiness. We begin to challenge the materialistic goals, aspirations and measures of success that have become deeply engrained in us over many years. This initial doubt is the beginning of our spiritual journey. It is this very doubt that is expressed by Arjuna right at the beginning of the Bhagavad-gita.

D - Dhrtarasata & Duryodhana (Verses 1-12) - These two characters are the root cause of this conflict. King Dhrtarastra inquires about the latest events on the battlefield, whereas his son Duryodhana is busy geeing up the armies as they prepare for a fratricidal war. Dhrtarastra is physically blind, but he and his son are also blinded by greed and material desire. When a living entity starts to think in terms of "I, me and mine", primarily interested in selfish gain and benefit, then anxiety, frustration and disappointment are inevitable. One who is materialistically entangled, become oblivious to the ill-effects of his actions.

O - Ominous result (13-20) - Despite Duryodhana's encouraging words, the ominous result of this confrontation is made clear from the onset. Too many signs indicate the inevitable defeat he will face. Those who stand on the side of selflessness will always be victorious, regardless of whether the odds seem stacked against them. One who does good will never be overcome by evil.

U - Uncertainty (21-27) - Despite this understanding, Arjuna is still uncertain about fighting. The chariots are readied, arrows are drawn, battle cries are being sounded, but Arjuna still wants to take a final look at all the armies. He orders Krishna to draw the chariot to the middle of the battlefield. To his credit, despite the intensity of the situation he does take time to reflect. Life may be crammed with responsibilities and pressing matters, but attendance to such demands should not be at the cost of quality reflection and introspection. Unfortunately, the response of 'no time' when it comes to such soul-searching, really is the chronic disease of modern man.

B - Bewilderment (28-30) - Arjuna's uncertainty intensifies, leading to complete disillusionment. When one is in ignorance of his spiritual identity, his relationship with God, and the purpose behind this world, one exhibits bewilderment and frustration at different points in life. Later, Krishna will readjust Arjuna's defective vision by imparting spiritual knowledge to him. However, presently bereft of that knowledge, Arjuna can see no solution to his dilemma.

T - Turning point (31-42) – Arjuna further rationalises his decision not to fight: 1) There is no happiness to be found in such warfare (even if he wins) 2) He will suffer from bad karma as a result of violence 3) the brutal killing involved will destroy the family unit and social structure, causing havoc for future generations. Arjuna sets aside his weapons, his mind overwhelmed by grief, determined not to fight.

Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: be convinced what kind of civilization we are trying to introduce

Your material desires, eating, sleeping, mating--fulfill it like a gentleman and save time and make spiritual advancement. This is to be introduced. Why you are inventing so strenuous work and spoil time, valuable time of human life? This we want to preach. Save time, be spiritually advanced, and other necessities, make it gentlemanly short-cut. If you save time, you can read all these literatures, understand what is value of life. Therefore, the literature here. Not for all. The brahmanas, educated. And they'll distribute the knowledge by speaking. Others, those who are less intelligent, simply by hearing, they will be guided. Just be convinced what kind of civilization we are trying to introduce. We should not be carried away. Then finished. In order to check others, if we become carried away, (laughing) then finish all business. To save them from being washed away by maya, if we become washed away, then where is the hope? Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, janma sarthaka kari' kara para-upakara [Cc. Adi 9.41]. Be strong so that you may not be rascal, and then you can do; others you can check. Otherwise, it will be impossible. How it is possible? A man is drowning. If you are strong enough, you can save. But if you also become drowned, then how you'll save him? So the everything is there. Save yourself, save others. This is our Krsna consciousness movement. First of all save yourself; then try to save others. Or both things can go on simultaneously. The same example. If you want to save somebody who's drowning you must know that I may not be washed away. I have to remain strong; then I can save him.

Matsyavatara das (ACBSP), Italy: Imitating or following someone's footprints – Part I

By Matsya Avatara Dasa

Should we imitate wise men, the spiritual master, the acarya and the prophets or follow their footsteps?

Imitation or simulation of a behavior results in copying someone, sometimes it can be some kind of deceit, which is much different from following the footsteps of an elevated model in an honest and sincere attempt to activate latent faculties within ourselves that are still unexpressed. Following the steps of elevated people will allow us to grow and will help us if we practice it with humbleness by giving benefits to others.

The spiritual master must not be imitated, but followed and used as a model to creatively apply his teachings on one's life. If we humbly strive to follow his footsteps, we gradually build in ourselves all of our inner requirements that will turn his model into our model. This would be an experience and a patrimony that step by step we can capitalize on. Vice versa, if we imitate him without performing a deep inner work, we will have the illusion to fly but we will discover that we have no wings to fly on. Only he who follows the footsteps, slowly gets close to who imprints these footsteps.

Therefore, imitating doesn't bring any long term benefits. Instead it exposes us to many dangers. Following the footsteps allows us to develop and earn the qualities that we take as a model.

Shila Prabhupada used to say: "If you are not humble, act as if you where, If you are not a devotee yet, act like a devotee."

"Acting as if" is a practice that can help us significantly in our spiritual journey. If I act as if I was a devotee, by maintain conscience of my limits and trying to overcome them, gradually, I will become a devotee. "Acting as if" allow us to progress in the same measure as we practice without pride and haughtiness, without pretending to ourselves and to others that we have already arrived.

If we follow the footsteps of those that are humble, we can also gradually become humble without making the mistake of building an illusion, however sincerely striving to find in ourselves that elevate quality of the soul. In reality virtue and knowledge already reside within us. We must realize existence and free ourselves from conditioners. Socrates used to define this teaching with the concept of maieutica and used to explain it as follows: what I do is simply putting people in the right conditions to
"give birth" to their knowledge. We can teach a child how to speak only because he already has in himself the faculty of speech, instead we could never do it with a monkey no matter how much effort we would put in it. By cultivating spiritual knowledge already intrinsic in our inner self and by practicing it in our life, we can awake in ourselves our superior nature, the only one that really belongs to us.

If we think that goodness, humbleness, justice, truthfulness, compassion, tolerance, mercy and love are qualities of our inner self, by practicing these values with faith and under the guide of who lives them coherently, we can gradually rediscover them by realizing who we are. We won't realize it only at the intellectual level, but also by experiencing a superior flavor of those values, on the strength of an emotional wave that connects us permanently to our inner world. By doing this and predisposing ourselves in the best way with prayers and meditation, by looking for help from Shri Shri Guru and Krishna, we can achieve excellent progress, even though we are still prisoners in our bodies. This is because we will reconnect to the universal archetypes and to that cosmic harmony that guarantees evolution and wellbeing of all the creatures and that allows us to transcend the narrow limits of conditioners: space and time.

Imitating means depriving ourselves of that very precious personal contribution called creativity. Knowledge applied without creativity and artificially emulated, does not bring results. This is why we should not imitate the acaryas but instead follow their footsteps, by acquiring their teachings and making them ours, by expressing them through our individuality and personality with our peculiar feelings, with faith and purity. We need to ensure that those teaching become our voice, our perfume and our existence.

When a person imitates someone, that person is not himself. He can act well his part but inside him there won't be tangible and significant changes as soon as the mask is off. If instead a person engages himself to apply the received teachings without fakeness, by expressing himself in every circumstance, without putting up any artifice, even if sometimes it would be evident that he doesn't understand or he makes some errors, he would however have a bigger chance to evolve spiritually in comparison to a perfect imitator.

The Guru's teachings must serve as orientation. The compass shows the destination, but we must undertake the journey to reach it.

To follow the Spiritual Master's footsteps we must engage ourselves by utilizing every resource to continue on the indicated path. Our path leads to the same goal that we have undertaken as a model, but if we reach it on our own, maybe out feathers will be a little worn out, but we are the ones who reached the goal after we have undertaken the entire journey.

By imitating, we don't do a true job on ourselves and therefore we don't feel satisfied, instead by following the footsteps we experiment a great joy and a continuous increment of our gratitude toward he who has showed us the way and helped us undertaking it.

Along the path we can sometimes encounter some obstacles such a stream that interferes and confuses us because we cannot see footprints in water. That would then become the chance to deeply question ourselves, to internalize even more the received teachings and understand how to proceed by using all the means at our disposal. Following footprints requires all of our participation and this allows us to develop a taste for knowledge and for its application. When we can climb some evolutionary step, it becomes our conquest and the gratitude toward those that have inspired and educated us on our journey becomes ever greater.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: '439' from The Yellow Submarine

4:12 A.M.

I woke with a headache last night but quieted it down. I slept well and got up from bed at 2:00 A.M. My chanting was at an average speed, and I've done twelve rounds so far. My eyes burned a little bit, but I was not drowsy. My chanting was mechanical but with good rhythm and attention to the names. I watched the clock and pushed myself to finish the twelve rounds before 4:15. I did it easily. It was not deeply prayerful, but it kept a good pace. I am not sorry about my chanting but feel that it was the best I could do.

The numbers tumbled speedily,
around the track like a NASCAR racer.
My engine roared. I was among the
front runners, my eyes wide open
although straining. The trees blurred
by, and I did not crash although
for a few moments my hands had
to grip the steering wheel with a tightened
grip. Four more rounds to go,
and I'll finish them before
breakfast. You are a
good chanter but not a
samadhi man. That has
to come in the future.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'On a Ratha-yatra' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Prabhupada Smaranam

Srila Prabhupada is sitting on a highly ornamented vyasasana. He is on a Ratha-yatra cart which has stopped at the end of the parade. The microphone stand is placed before him, and he is leading kirtana playing the gong. Thousands of people are facing him joining the musical chant. Prabhupada is accustomed to this, and he knows what to do. Soon he will give his lecture. He will speak spontaneously, and it will come out coherent and comprehensive, a talk about Krishna the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Many people in the audience have never heard him before. If they listen carefully, he will open up new concepts to them, that God is a non-material person, and to please Him in devotional service is the highest goal of life. To those who have already heard this, they will become inspired and touched at their core of faith, krishnas tu bhagavan svayam. This person Krishna is the summum bonum, their dear beloved and best friend. Prabhupada is personally carrying Krishna, distributing Him free of charge and directly. His words are the culmination of the Ratha-yatra parade. The pageantry is wonderful, but his words are the most important part of the celebration, his words and the kirtana. This is the Gauidya Vaisnava method of imbibing the supreme truth. Prabhupada is delivering the parampara of the previous acaryas like the six Gosvamis, Lord Caitanya and Krishna Himself. Most people hearing him, even his disciples, don't appreciate the magnitude of the moment, but it is happening—Krishna is appearing in person on the tongue of Prabhupada. It is a tremendously auspicious occasion.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'The Songs of A Hare Krishna Man (take seven)' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

"With each chorus of Kerouac
I'm getting more tired of it…
It's all over for me…I had
to get it out of my system.
Prabhupada wrote to Hayagriva in
1968, "If you have any affinity for
the hippies, give it up. Don't put it
into Back to Godhead magazine."

Gurudasa asked me if I were to place
a theoretical thousand dollar bet
on a horse in the Preakness, who
would I choose? I said "Supersaver.
But I don't bet." Supersaver
came in eighth. The two to
one favorite, "Lucky" won the
race. I watched the Phillies
beating Milwaukee.

Why weren't you reading the
Gita? I can't do it all the time.
I need a break, to relax.
But I'll read it again
today. Haridasa suggested
I write in my journal how
Prabhupada's writing is
so lovable and warm. I
have to read him and
feel it in order to do so.

"I am not the judge or condemner
of all these people. I have
not become better than them—
see spirit soul in all living beings,
see with the eyes of scripture,
that's best enlightenment,
act it out by serving the spiritual
master, by chanting the
holy names of God
harinama eva kevalam.

In Songs I wrote that
controversial line, "If I
meet an ex-American living in
Vrndavana who seems to be
now a Hindu Gaudiya I
won't believe him." I
heard an advanced devotee
took offense. I wrote him
a letter of apology and said
that line was the cynical
voice of a persona in my poem,
not my actual belief. I
never received an answer.

At about this point I
get tired and seek reserve
energy. I turn to music,
and it helps a little. You
want to write about Krishna, but
you are not Krishnaized. You
grasp for Him—cry "O Lord
please come to me and abide
with me. I'm drowning without
You." But yesterday you
watched Frank Sinatra at
Carnegie Hall in 1980, in
the autumn of his career,
that's not going to help you.

In Songs you wrote, "We've
been gone from the world thirty
years and millions of years and
species and now it's coming right
and you want to play it strong
until your end, no harm,
don't skip it, feel it,
what Bhagavad-gita says
and how you tried but missed."

Have I missed?
I don't think so. I'm hanging on to
the dhoti of Srila Prabhupada,
onto his lotus feet.
I've missed attaining the very best, but
I'm hanging on, these poems are
my testimony.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Spirit of Yukta-vairagya' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Free write

I work with a digital Dictaphone because it has an easy to operate configuration, but there is no way I am going to learn how to run a computer, Internet, Twitter, A-Pod, iPod, Apple and BlackBerry. To use them however is not against Krishna consciousness. Fortunately I have assistants who operate these machines for me. Devotees use them in the spirit of yukta-vairagya. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati championed Rupa Gosvami's verse that refusing to use material things was phalgu (artificial) renunciation. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati was criticized for using cars and printing presses, but he saw them as spiritual instruments to further the cause of Krishna consciousness in the modern age. He even had a drawing of a printing press on a logo of his magazine Gaudiya, treating it as a sacred object along with the form of Radha and Krishna and the paraphernalia for Deity worship and a volume of Srimad-Bhagavatam.

One has to be careful not to become too immersed in the world of technological gadgets. They should never compromise one's sadhana. No electric machine replaces the old-fashioned tulasi japa mala. It is possible to burn out from overuse of email. One should not spend all one's waking hours on the computer or internet. But when used with balance, Apple and BlackBerry can be useful in devotional service.

New Vrndavan, USA: Nrisimha Chaturdasi Wednesday May 26th

On May 26th 2010 we will be celebrating Nrisimha Chaturdasi. This day is the appearance day of Lord Nrsimhadeva who is Lord Krishna's incarnation as half man, half lion. When the evil king Hiranyakashipu found that his son Prahlad was continuously praying to Krishna and coaxing his schoolmates to become devotees of the Lord, he was furious. He began to terrorize and torture his young son, until finally Krishna, in the form of Nrsimhadeva, burst from a pillar in Hiranyakashipu's palace and slew the evil king to protect His devotee. Vaishnavas the world over pray to Lord Nrsimhadeva for protection, particularly in dangerous circumstances.

During Nrisimha Chaturdasi devotees and temples all over the world celebrate the apprearance and the pastimes of Lord Nrisimhadeva.

On the auspicious occasion of Nrsimha-caturdasi, we pray to Lord Nrsimhadeva that just as He saved Prahlada from the demon Hiranyakasipu, He will appear in our hearts and save us from the demon like desires for fruitive activity in this world–and from the desire to escape the world by merging into the existence of God, by becoming one with God. He should free us from every desire or tendency other than to serve and please Krsna, which we can best accomplish, especially in this age, by chanting His holy names: Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Donna Simpson Eats 12,000 Calories A Day, Wants To Weigh 1,000 Pounds

“There is no possibility of one’s becoming a yogi, O Arjuna, if one eats too much or eats too little, sleeps too much or does not sleep enough.”

Bg 6.16

In America the bit about eating too little is practically incomprehensible to the average consumer totally conditioned to enjoy in a land of abundance.  The eating too much though is something easily related to.

Let’s face it, the struggle is with eating too much and I bet everyone reading the following has, even if for just a nanosecond,  experienced a twinge of envy of this woman who has totally caved into overeating.

From Huffington Post

Donna Simpson currently weighs 600 pounds, so she’s going on a diet in hopes of reaching what she considers her ideal weight: 1,000 pounds. The 42-year-old mother, a resident of Old Bridge, NJ, consumes a whopping 12,000 calories a day in an effort to reach her goal.

Simpson already holds the Guinness World Record for world’s fattest mother. She insists she’s healthy despite the fact that she cannot walk more than 20 feet independently.

The grocery bills frequently reach $750 a week and Simpson supports her diet with money earned from a website where people pay to watch her eat. Her husband, Phillipe, who weighs a 150 pounds, fully supports her plans.

“I love eating and people love watching me eat,” she said. “It makes people happy, and I’m not harming anyone.”

But experts say tax payers could end up paying for Simpson’s resulting health problems.

(End story)

FYI, there doesn’t seem to be an actual website where she blogs for her fans, at least not one available to the public.

Gauranga Kishore das,USA: Srila Prabhupada's Achievement being Recognized on CNN

An article recently appeared on CNN's Living section entitled Famous Folks Lauched Careers After 50.

Srila Prabhupada's accomplishment is truly staggering, just from a material point of view. I am sure gradually it will begin to be recognized more and more as time goes on. Below is the excerpt from the article describing him, you you see the original article here.

A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
The founder of the Hare Krishna movement was 69 years old before he started the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.
In his native India, Prabhupada had been a chemist and a Sanskrit scholar in Calcutta, but in 1965 he came to New York City with just fifty bucks, a pair of cymbals, and a desire to spread the teachings of Lord Krishna.
Prabhupada got off to a modest start by sitting on a sidewalk in the East Village and chanting, but by the time of his death in 1977 his legions of followers were rumored to be thousands strong.

Madri dd, South Africa: Mini Pearl Festival!

Sri Sri Nitai Saci-suta
Sri Giri Govardhana

This is darsan of Their Lordships Sri Sri Nitai Gaura Hari currently being worship @ Iskcon in Johannesburg, South Africa - 16 May 2010, Sunday

"I offer my respectful obeisances unto Sri Krsna Caitanya and Lord Nityananda, who are like the sun and moon. They have arisen simultaneously on the horizon of Gauda to dissipate the darkness of ignorance and thus wonderfully bestow benediction upon all." [Adi 1.3]

"Sangopangastra-parsadam further indicates that Lord Caitanya is Lord Krsna. His body is always decorated with ornaments of sandalwood and with sandalwood paste. By His superexcellent beauty He subdues all the people of the age. In other descents the Lord sometimes used weapons to defeat the demoniac, but in this age the Lord subdues them with His all-attractive figure as Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Srila Jiva Gosvami explains that His beauty is His astra, or weapon, to subdue the demons. Because He is all-attractive, it is to be understood that all the demigods lived with Him as His companions. His acts were uncommon and His associates wonderful. When He propagated the sankirtana movement, He attracted many great scholars and acaryas, especially in Bengal and Orissa. Lord Caitanya is always accompanied by His best associates like Lord Nityananda, Advaita, Gadadhara and Srivasa." [SB 11.5.32]

Their Lordships Sri Sri Chota Nitai Gaura-Hari. ""Behold the great fortune of the devotee Kholaveca. Lord Brahma and Siva shed tears upon seeing his greatness. One cannot attain Lord Krsna by any amount of wealth, followers, or learning. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is controlled only by pure devotion. "Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu had a very sincere devotee whose name was Kholaveca Sridhara and whose only business was to sell pots made of the skin of banana trees. Whatever income he had, he used fifty percent for the worship of mother Ganges, and with the other fifty percent he provided for his necessities. On the whole, he was so very poor that he lived in a cottage that had a broken roof with many holes in it. He could not afford brass utensils, and therefore he drank water from an iron pot. Nevertheless, he was a great devotee of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He is a typical example of how a poor man with no material possessions can become a most exalted devotee of the Lord. The conclusion is that one cannot attain shelter at the lotus feet of Lord Krishna or Sri Caitanya through material opulence; that shelter is attainable only by pure devotional service." [SB 5.19.7]

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: The People-And The Shame-Behind Our Food

From Gavin Newsom, the mayor of San Francisco, at the Huffington Post

Our current culture has an unprecedented awareness of food and its source. Organic, locavore, sustainable, free-range, farm-raised: these have all become household terms. We pay more attention than ever before to what goes into our shopping carts and into our stomachs. Food has even become a major source of entertainment: we watch chefs compete on TV for the best culinary creation and those struggling with obesity to lose the most weight.

We may carefully inspect the food we buy for certain ingredients or where it comes from, but we're still not getting the full story.

Mainstream America was awakened to the plight of millions of farm workers when legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow broadcast his documentary, "The Harvest of Shame" in 1960. Cesar Chavez called on Americans to "Boycott Grapes" in the 1960s and won the first union
contract protections for farm workers in America's history.

Now, it is our turn.

Let's ask ourselves why we are so aware of what we eat, yet so unaware of the abuse that California's 500,000 farm workers endure. They live in squalor among us, suffering from sexual harassment, inadequate drinking water and housing, lack of shade, and sky-high disease rates. More farm workers have died from heat in the last few years than at
any time in decades. That these conditions persist into the 21st century is appalling, and we ought to be ashamed.

When farm workers organize, they are threatened with deportation. When they complain to the government, they are so often ignored. When they try to defend themselves, they are fired.

Today's leaders of the United Farm Workers are a remarkable group of young men and women. I've marched with them and seen first hand their struggle for fairness and equality.

I have worked for Californians' civil rights before, and I will continue to do so by standing with the workers who help us get our state's produce to the table and keep our agricultural economy
running. Farmworkers in California harvest and produce a majority of fresh food for the U.S., which helps preserve our food security and maintains a sustainable, local source of food. Without farmworkers, our national security, economy, and environment would suffer.

This year, the United Farm Workers has decided to do something new, and it's an opportunity for us all to participate in improving the living and working conditions of those who need and deserve it.

They are organizing "Fair Harvest Meals" on college campuses across California. Farm workers will share both the fruits and vegetables they pick and their stories with students. They hope to inspire a new generation of young people to do more than take a day off work or school to honor the legacy of Cesar Chavez. They hope that young people will take what they learn to pressure the food stores we patronize to require humane working conditions from growers.'

One of my political heroes, Robert F. Kennedy, supported striking UFW workers under Cesar Chavez's leadership in the 1960s. I want to honor both of these civil rights activists by doing all that I can for those who give so much to feed us. I want to see "Fair Harvest Foods" as
much a part of our consciousness and consumption as "Free Trade Coffee."

Our state's farm workers deserve every opportunity to participate in the California dream. We have the ability to stop the indignities, to end the suffering, to ease the fears -- and it is our moral imperative to do so.

Therefore both of you come to an agreement and let us join together in the service of the Lord."
