Massive Rally for Cow Protection

By Rajaram Dasa

THE EVENT
On November 15th, 2009, the streets of Hyderabad were painted with saffron color when thousands of devotees of Mother Cow took to the streets demanding a total ban on cow slaughter and a declaration that the cow be named as India’s national animal. The massive Vehicle Rally was headed by H.H. Bhakti Raghava Swami, who was recently appointed the Minister for ISKCON Varnashrama-based Rural Development Ministry in India.

OUR FUNDAMENTAL DUTY
Speaking on the occasion to newspaper reporters just before the start of the rally, Maharaj stated that unless and until people realize the importance of cow protection and make a collective effort to protect the cows, we should not expect peace and prosperity in today’s troubled world. He went on to explain that the welfare of a nation begins with the welfare of her cows. Quoting from the Bhagavad-gita, he reminded those present that Lord Krishna descends from time to time to punish the miscreants, to give protection to His devotees and to re-establish the principles of dharma. Maharaj urged that as devotees of Lord Krishna it is our fundamental duty to strive for cow protection. He concluded by stating that Srila Prabhupada, the Founder-Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, ISKCON, introduced the noble service of cow protection not only in India but also in the western world where beef has become the staple diet.

The TV and Print media of Andhra Pradesh covered the rally very extensively thereby taking the message of Cow Protection to millions of viewers.

The rally started from Marredpally passing trough main the streets of Secunderabad and Hyderabad with about 100 motorcycles, 25 cars, 5 buses and 6 mass transport vehicles, along with hundreds of people wearing attractive T-shirts depicting a beautiful picture of our Mother Cow and a declaration stating “I will protect Mother Cow”.

Devotees, Youth, Women, Children, Environmentalist and Animal rights activists participated in the rally enthusiastically.

GLOBAL APPEAL

Latter in the evening, H.H. Bhakti Raghava Swami attended a mammoth public meeting of “Vishwa Mangala Gou Grama Yatra” where about 10,000 people had gathered. Maharaja shared the dais with H.H. Raghaveshwara Bharati who is leading the 108 day Ratha Yatra across India. Addressing the public meeting, Maharaj congratulated Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati for taking up this program and stated that the Vishwa Mangala Gou Grama Yatra is aptly named because cow protection is meant for the welfare of the entire universe ( Vishwa Mangala). He stressed that only when cows are protected and our villages safe and taken care of can there be real happiness and harmony in this world. Maharaj reiterated the 3 Point Formula of Land, Cows & Krishna as the only solution to all the problems mankind is undergoing today.

SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN

One of the objectives of the yatra is to solicit signatures totaling 21 crores or 210 million from those caring for our Mother Cow calling for a total ban on cow slaughter in India. The signature campaign ends in January 2009. To show solidarity for protecting our Mother Cow who is the fundamental pillar of dharma, you can participate in this herculean endeavor by signing on line at the official website of the organizers, www.gougram.org direct link to page http://eng.gougram.org/signature-campaign-for-the-welfare-of-indian-cows/

Eternal Gems – Reminiscing Divine Instructions of H.H. Bhaktisvarupa Damodara Swami on his 72nd vyasa puja day

Jaganmohini devi dasi: Nov. 23rd, 2009 is 72nd vyasa-puja day of my most beloved spiritual master H.H. Bhaktisvarupa Damodara Swami Srila Sripada maharaj who was specially blessed by Srila Prabhupada to present the principles of Bhagavata culture in a creative and practical format amongst the intellectual and scientific community.

Srila Prabhupada said, “There are two ways of association – by vani(words) and by vapu(physical presence). Physical presence is sometimes appreciable and sometimes not, but vani continues to exist eternally.”
Indeed it is in the physical absence of a pure devotee that a serious practitioner begins to taste the nectar of his vani. He sees the vani as Eternal gems, a treasure whose possession and association protects his bhakti seed from ruining and also helps to nurture the seed to grow further. Besides, this treasure provides valuable solace during testing times rejuvenating the practitioner with fresh energy.

On this auspicious occasion, I am sharing some Eternal Gems for my own purification and for the pleasure of my gurumaharaj and his well-wishers and followers.

What triggered me to study some of the instructions of my spiritual master again is one of the last questions asked by Srila Prabhupada to my spiritual master that I was reminded of recently on Srila Prabhupada’s disappearance day.

It is interesting to hear one of the last conversations that took place between my spiritual master and Srila Prabhupada. It happened barely few days before Srila Prabhupada left this planet, when my spiritual master had his night duty of taking care of Srila Prabhupada at Sri Vrndavan Dham. When both were alone in the room, the conversations during those moments were extremely intimate. One day, Srila Prabhupada asked my gurumaharaj with regard to the lessons given by Srila Prabhupada, “Are you convinced?…(pause).., Are you convinced?..(pause) Are you convinced?”. ..three times.., to which my spiritual master replied, “yes”. It is amazing because this question was asked after ‘empowering’ my spiritual master in scientific preaching, and in response my gurumaharaj answered ‘affirmatively’ to Srila Prabhupada, ‘greatest spiritual master who could never be defeated’. To me, from both the sides it was more of a confirmation about their respective roles, one of an exalted spiritual master and another of an exalted obedient disciple or in other words role of a perfect guru and a perfect disciple. This conversation also instructs us that the relation between a guru and a disciple is not mechanically arranged but they are eternal and it happens by the blessings of the Lord. My gurumaharaj would repeat the above exchanges to us on specific occasions when his focus exclusively would be to educate us on examining our foundations of Krishna Consciousness instead of having anxiety about the result of the seva undertaken.

How seriously my gurumaharaj took to his heart, the question which he was asked or how firmly he was convinced is reflected in his each and every instruction that he has given to his followers. It is also reflected in his lectures, seminars, publications and different conversations/dialogue that he had with his intellectual associates in the subject matter of spirituality as well as Krishna Consciousness, in the international conferences that he organized during his lifetime while present in this planet and also in the various cultural programs which he directed to promote the vaishnava culture of Manipur state. Besides, the same conviction was also evident when he mixed up very smoothly with other spiritual groups and several religious leaders.

Srila Prabhupada gave valuable tips during his last phase of life. He wanted my gurumaharaj to take the lead in adopting a suitable preaching technique to convince the intellectual community. He gave a broad explanation of Hari Kirtan and minutely guided on the application of Hari Kirtan. Srila Prabhupada told my gurumaharaj to preach in a suitable format considering the trend of generation then, which had changed significantly since Srila Prabhupada’s times. Following his spiritual master’s order, my gurumaharaj adopted consistently a dignified preaching technique till the end.

He never condemned science nor affirmed that one cannot realize truth through science. Instead he presented new science as an alternative to mechanistic paradigm, where new science can adopt an approach based on the synthesis of Science and Vedanta/Religion. He acknowledged different levels of human endeavors towards perfection in life. He never spoke against demigod worshippers or mayavadis or atheist or any other category who couldn’t be accommodated under Gaudiya Vaishnava sect. He discouraged us from adopting the narrow approach or an approach biased towards absolute claim. Once he even told us, the people whom we identify as atheists need not be an atheist, but we frame everybody under atheist class or we condemn others because they fail to fit into our realization of Krishna Consciousness. Once he explained to us the meaning of 10th offense of chanting, “One should not instruct a faithless person about the glories of the Holy name.” He would say if we are unable to convince; we must refer that person to an authority who is having higher standing in the spiritual world, before concluding about the atheistic nature of a human being. His point was, it is not just theoretical knowledge but revealed knowledge helps us in convincing others. He said, according to our devotional strength or the desire that we have knowledge is revealed in different ways. Quoting Srila Prabhupada, he also discouraged us strongly from making statements like, “Actually we belong to Goloka Vrndavan, but now we have fallen down to material world …..”.

I take pleasure in presenting below, the prominent guidelines which he gave us with regard to journey of our devotional life. I thank my good husband H.G. Subal Shyam Das for providing valuable inputs while compiling the following guidelines. We are eternally indebted to our spiritual master for guiding us in our devotional journey for almost a decade.

1)Foundation of devotional life
My Guru Maharaj never encouraged the approach of taking up the bhakti process blindly and quickly without undergoing appropriate lessons in the science of foundations of bhakti. He emphasized this very much while introducing the path of spirituality or KC among intellectuals. He would several times quote the example of an earth quake, saying, when natural calamities strike, the houses which are weakly built collapse while those with strong foundations can withstand any calamities. From another perspective, he also said how the wrong foundational seed can create confusion in our life. He used to give the example of Darwinism and neo-Darwinism which had become responsible to create disorientation in the minds of several intellectuals. He said, although Darwin regretted during his later stage of life for the mistake committed, it was of no use because the impact of his theory has resulted in a civilization where people have lost respect for life. Quoting this example my gurumaharaj strongly emphasized on the appropriate foundation to be laid in all our endeavors. He said when people get used to one type of thinking or paradigm; it was not very easy to change. This he said is true even in our spiritual foundation. Thus he was clear that we need to spend sufficient time or years in understanding and strengthening our spiritual (Bhakti) foundation.

“It is very simple that you have to become very strong in your understanding of the process of the Krishna Consciousness. So that even if the Himalayan Mountain is falling on your head you should remain stable”

2)Meaningful goal in life
He said that we must live a life with meaningful goal and always think about the final destination of the goal. The moment we become convinced about it, we must stick to it and should go ahead with full determination and full strength.

3)Importance of Human form of life
He said, human form is meant for developing awareness of life’s journey.
“When you get up in the morning before you put your feet on the ground, you have to remember that this body can be finished at any moment. In other words death will be a reality.”

A living entity can become thoughtful only in human form. Hence we have to be very serious to utilize this rare human form to always do the right thing. We should not be attracted by false and imaginary conceptions or to the jugglery of words.
“We should engage our lives practically so that we can make tangible progress on our journey of Krishna Consciousness.”

My gurumaharaj categorically emphasized on understanding the values of life in this human form and for this purpose he advised us to read the scriptures regularly and assimilate the essence.

4)Conviction on knowledge about life and matter
My spiritual master undoubtedly excelled in this art of presenting the message of Bhagavad Gita or Bhagavad Purana effortlessly amongst the intelligent circle, for which he would feel indebted to Srila Prabhupada. Following in the footsteps of Srila Prabhupada, he would time and again impart basic education on the necessity of acquiring atma-gyan in the human form of life. He had a special skill of presenting this.

“Once you understand the distinction between life and matter you will develop all good qualities.”

He was always concerned that if we are having weak initial conviction or weak basic foundation on understanding the distinction between life and matter, then it will have repercussions at our later stage of life especially when perplexities of different natures start bothering us. Hence in all his discourses or conversations, he would repeatedly emphasize on Raja Vidya as given in Bhagavat Gita. He would sweetly elaborate saying, that Raja Vidya or confidential knowledge is meant only for human form. He would present this knowledge as a valuable treasure to help us grow as a human being. He would say, if we have to become successful in any endeavor, one must possess this treasure.
“So therefore this conviction that I must be firmly convinced that yes I would like to get this knowledge, the knowledge of science of soul, science of Absolute spirit….so that you are fixed, your duty is fixed and no one else change your commitment and then you are not interested in wasting your time.”

5)Mind control
My Gurumaharaj said one of the most important things in Krishna Consciousness is that the mind has to be tuned properly so that it is suitable to receive the message of the science of Krishna Consciousness.

Regarding the mind control exercise he said,
“It is not very easy to control the mind. Unless you are guided properly from the platform of spiritual understanding or spiritual realization the mind is always going to be revolting. When the mind is always revolting, and one follows the dictates of the mind that is called falling into ocean of Maya. As human beings, as intelligent human beings, our business is how to get out of this Maya.”

He said we must not attempt any artificial method to control the mind.
“Unless you have a mercy of Supreme Personality of Godhead or the mercy of the representative of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, it is not very easy, to control the mind because anything that you try will be artificial. Anything done artificially is not going to last long.”

When we practice mind control based on artificial methods, then it can have unfavorable influence in our consciousness which in turn can affect our present life as well as our future life.
“If your consciousness is aimed towards a certain object or to a certain idea then you will be forced to accept that type of body where that type of consciousness can be cultivated.”

6) Exemplary actions and quality service
My gurumaharaj’s every action was exemplary and it was always of high quality. He used to tell us that we should always set an example to project Krishna Consciousness in the right spirit. Our practice of spirituality must be reflected in our quality of consciousness.
“The way we dress, the way we work and the way we speak should be exemplary to everyone. We may be farmers or we may be woodcutters, or we may be planting vegetables, or we may be writers, but every action that we do should be exemplary.”

“Make sure that anybody around you develops good consciousness, a good sprit of service attitude. Even if it is two people or three people if you form a nucleus like that then whatever you build around you will be of that quality.”

7) Internal discipline through Sadhana
Regarding the importance of sadhana in our life he said,
“The seed of devotion will grow with special care and special attention, i.e. sadhana. Sadhana means discipline. One must become very much disciplined.”

8)Simplicity
My gurumaharaj’s simplicity attracted all categories of people whether he was a common man, or a Nobel Laureate. He thus had a transcendental aura around him which influenced whomsoever he met.
“If you maintain a culture of simplicity then you will remain strong on life’s journey.”

9) Seva Attitude
We have seen our gurumaharaj’s mood of serving the vaishnavas whenever he got an opportunity. Even a small person like driver used to be influenced by his divine qualities of serving prasadam joyfully to everybody. We have personally seen how he used to get pleasure while serving prasadam to his guests who included his own disciples and scholarly associates at his ashrams(Manipur, Nabdweep and Radhakund.) Like a child he used to enjoy serving all categories of guests. He saw all as part and parcel of Krishna and obtained peace through prasadam seva.
“If the mind is engaged properly in the service of Lord Sri Krishna then the mind will become very peaceful and all other senses will also become peaceful. When there is peace of mind then there will be peace in the individual jiva.”

10)Devotional frame of mind
My gurumaharaj frequently spoke about setting our frame of mind appropriately while performing any kind of devotional service.
“In order to become devotee of Krishna the whole framework of one’s mind, thoughts, words, and association must be completely lined up in the devotional environment”

He always used to say before we take up any service, we must be convinced about the intention of that service:
“The foundation is that we have to be firmly convinced yes, that what I am doing is by the mercy of the Lord and mercy of my spiritual master, vaishnavas therefore I must do it.”
“Once you are fixed and once you are fully convinced to what you are doing then you proceed and in that activity you pray everyday and every moment for the blessings of the spiritual master, and of course for the blessings of the supreme Lord, then you get strength. Strength does not mean physical strength, you get spiritual strength. When you get spiritual strength then generally you will be so enthusiastic …even if, say for e.g. nobody helps you, but by your commitment the help will come by the mercy of the Lord, it is definite.”

11)Humility – Depend on Supreme personality of Godhead Lord Krishna
“In the science of devotion, the mood and the desire of the seeking soul, or the hankering soul, are extremely important.”
“We have to realize that we are always dependent on the mercy of the Lord.”

My gurumaharaj considered humility as the topmost ornament of a vaishnava. He guided us on the understanding of what is humility in our devotional path.

“The devotional mood is the mood of humility, a state of complete helplessness.
When the living entity becomes fully convinced about his helplessness, about his helpless condition in this material world, then generally, at that point, one begins seeking for help. That is when one begins to contemplate about the higher principles of life, the higher goals of life, the higher purpose of life.”

“Unless we are firmly fixed in the spirit of humility, knowing that we are helpless eternal servants of the Lord, devotional life will not flourish.”

“The devotional mood is, I am the most fallen. I am the most unqualified. This mood is extremely important. As long as we cultivate this type of understanding in Krishna Consciousness then Krishna will always protect us and Krishna will always come to us.”

12)Guru-disciple relationship.
Time and again my gurumaharaj emphasized the role of spiritual master in the devotional journey of his disciple.
“We just have to maintain the understanding that we must follow the directions of our spiritual master-100%.We can always beg blessings from other spiritual masters and advanced vaisnavas and take siksha or instructions from advanced vaisnavas but the ultimate goal is how to get strength to serve the orders of my spiritual master. That is primary.”

He instructed us that we should begin our day’s work with prayers to guru and seek his blessings. At the same time he emphasized that begging for blessings is not enough but we must perform our duty diligently.

Quoting ‘Yasya deve para bhakti…..….’
he would say our firm faith in Lord and the spiritual master plays an important role in the revelations of Vedic knowledge.
“It is not knowledge acquired by research rather it is acquired by your intense bhakti and by your intense devotional mood.”

Quoting Srila Prabhupada, my gurumaharaj used to say, our success in Krishna Consciousness is not dependent on our material prowess but depended on accepting spiritual master’s instructions as life and soul.

13)Appreciation of other religious scriptures
He was forever versatile to receive messages from other religions meant for human growth.

“Take the essence of every religious scripture and use it, apply it.”

We saw last year on the eve of his vyasa-puja several top religious leaders from all over the world gathered at Sri Mayapur Dham by his will. He thus effortlessly presented even in his physical absence to several religious leaders that KC was not any sectarian or ritualistic religion but it is the eternal religion of every living entity. It is certainly very difficult for a conditioned soul to emulate the same scenario as was accomplished by my gurumaharaj last year at Sri Mayapur Dham, but such events can definitely inspire and charge us to keep up our faith or increase our faith in the KC process and learn or practice to live peacefully in the midst of the pluralistic society.

14)Promoting devotion to God through culture and art
Recently on my gurumaharaj’s Tirobhav celebrations at Sri Radha Kund, we had the good fortune of watching the dance drama ballet movie depicting the life sketch of one of greatest Vaishnava King of Manipur, Rajarshi Bhagyachandra The ballet was very realistic and filled with devotional sentiments. Every scene involved minute thought processing and fine choreography. The Director of this ballet was none other than my gurumaharaj. Any lover of art and culture watching this ballet live will naturally get transformed towards Lord’s devotion. Undoubtedly this ballet demonstrated my Gurumaharaj’s conviction of what he had learnt from Srila Prabhupada that art and culture can also arouse pure devotion to Lord.

To sum up, I would consider it as my gurumaharaj’s mercy if the eternal gems we have shared in this article benefits you in your devotional endeavor. In our devotional journey there is nothing beyond increasing our love to Lord and His pure devotees. Until we attain this love, we will continue to see every situation of our life as a paradox causing constant bewilderment, but ignoring this fact we continue to judge every episode that occurs in our life as if in proper or rational perception, although it is a conditioned perception.

Hare Krishna!
