Bhaktisvarupa Damodara Swami on his 72nd vyasa puja dayEternal Gems – Reminiscing Divine Instructions of H.H. Bhaktisvarupa Damodara Swami on his 72nd vyasa puja day Jaganmohini devi dasi: Nov. 23rd, 2009 is 72nd vyasa-puja day of my most beloved spiritual master H.H. Bhaktisvarupa Damodara Swami Srila Sripada maharaj who was specially blessed by Srila Prabhupada to present the principles of Bhagavata culture in a creative and practical format amongst the intellectual and scientific community. Srila Prabhupada said, “There are two ways of association – by vani(words) and by vapu(physical presence). Physical presence is sometimes appreciable and sometimes not, but vani continues to exist eternally.” On this auspicious occasion, I am sharing some Eternal Gems for my own purification and for the pleasure of my gurumaharaj and his well-wishers and followers. What triggered me to study some of the instructions of my spiritual master again is one of the last questions asked by Srila Prabhupada to my spiritual master that I was reminded of recently on Srila Prabhupada’s disappearance day. It is interesting to hear one of the last conversations that took place between my spiritual master and Srila Prabhupada. It happened barely few days before Srila Prabhupada left this planet, when my spiritual master had his night duty of taking care of Srila Prabhupada at Sri Vrndavan Dham. When both were alone in the room, the conversations during those moments were extremely intimate. One day, Srila Prabhupada asked my gurumaharaj with regard to the lessons given by Srila Prabhupada, “Are you convinced?…(pause).., Are you convinced?..(pause) Are you convinced?”. ..three times.., to which my spiritual master replied, “yes”. It is amazing because this question was asked after ‘empowering’ my spiritual master in scientific preaching, and in response my gurumaharaj answered ‘affirmatively’ to Srila Prabhupada, ‘greatest spiritual master who could never be defeated’. To me, from both the sides it was more of a confirmation about their respective roles, one of an exalted spiritual master and another of an exalted obedient disciple or in other words role of a perfect guru and a perfect disciple. This conversation also instructs us that the relation between a guru and a disciple is not mechanically arranged but they are eternal and it happens by the blessings of the Lord. My gurumaharaj would repeat the above exchanges to us on specific occasions when his focus exclusively would be to educate us on examining our foundations of Krishna Consciousness instead of having anxiety about the result of the seva undertaken. How seriously my gurumaharaj took to his heart, the question which he was asked or how firmly he was convinced is reflected in his each and every instruction that he has given to his followers. It is also reflected in his lectures, seminars, publications and different conversations/dialogue that he had with his intellectual associates in the subject matter of spirituality as well as Krishna Consciousness, in the international conferences that he organized during his lifetime while present in this planet and also in the various cultural programs which he directed to promote the vaishnava culture of Manipur state. Besides, the same conviction was also evident when he mixed up very smoothly with other spiritual groups and several religious leaders. Srila Prabhupada gave valuable tips during his last phase of life. He wanted my gurumaharaj to take the lead in adopting a suitable preaching technique to convince the intellectual community. He gave a broad explanation of Hari Kirtan and minutely guided on the application of Hari Kirtan. Srila Prabhupada told my gurumaharaj to preach in a suitable format considering the trend of generation then, which had changed significantly since Srila Prabhupada’s times. Following his spiritual master’s order, my gurumaharaj adopted consistently a dignified preaching technique till the end. He never condemned science nor affirmed that one cannot realize truth through science. Instead he presented new science as an alternative to mechanistic paradigm, where new science can adopt an approach based on the synthesis of Science and Vedanta/Religion. He acknowledged different levels of human endeavors towards perfection in life. He never spoke against demigod worshippers or mayavadis or atheist or any other category who couldn’t be accommodated under Gaudiya Vaishnava sect. He discouraged us from adopting the narrow approach or an approach biased towards absolute claim. Once he even told us, the people whom we identify as atheists need not be an atheist, but we frame everybody under atheist class or we condemn others because they fail to fit into our realization of Krishna Consciousness. Once he explained to us the meaning of 10th offense of chanting, “One should not instruct a faithless person about the glories of the Holy name.” He would say if we are unable to convince; we must refer that person to an authority who is having higher standing in the spiritual world, before concluding about the atheistic nature of a human being. His point was, it is not just theoretical knowledge but revealed knowledge helps us in convincing others. He said, according to our devotional strength or the desire that we have knowledge is revealed in different ways. Quoting Srila Prabhupada, he also discouraged us strongly from making statements like, “Actually we belong to Goloka Vrndavan, but now we have fallen down to material world …..”. I take pleasure in presenting below, the prominent guidelines which he gave us with regard to journey of our devotional life. I thank my good husband H.G. Subal Shyam Das for providing valuable inputs while compiling the following guidelines. We are eternally indebted to our spiritual master for guiding us in our devotional journey for almost a decade. 1)Foundation of devotional life “It is very simple that you have to become very strong in your understanding of the process of the Krishna Consciousness. So that even if the Himalayan Mountain is falling on your head you should remain stable” 2)Meaningful goal in life 3)Importance of Human form of life A living entity can become thoughtful only in human form. Hence we have to be very serious to utilize this rare human form to always do the right thing. We should not be attracted by false and imaginary conceptions or to the jugglery of words. My gurumaharaj categorically emphasized on understanding the values of life in this human form and for this purpose he advised us to read the scriptures regularly and assimilate the essence. 4)Conviction on knowledge about life and matter “Once you understand the distinction between life and matter you will develop all good qualities.” He was always concerned that if we are having weak initial conviction or weak basic foundation on understanding the distinction between life and matter, then it will have repercussions at our later stage of life especially when perplexities of different natures start bothering us. Hence in all his discourses or conversations, he would repeatedly emphasize on Raja Vidya as given in Bhagavat Gita. He would sweetly elaborate saying, that Raja Vidya or confidential knowledge is meant only for human form. He would present this knowledge as a valuable treasure to help us grow as a human being. He would say, if we have to become successful in any endeavor, one must possess this treasure. 5)Mind control Regarding the mind control exercise he said, He said we must not attempt any artificial method to control the mind. When we practice mind control based on artificial methods, then it can have unfavorable influence in our consciousness which in turn can affect our present life as well as our future life. 6) Exemplary actions and quality service “Make sure that anybody around you develops good consciousness, a good sprit of service attitude. Even if it is two people or three people if you form a nucleus like that then whatever you build around you will be of that quality.” 7) Internal discipline through Sadhana 8)Simplicity 9) Seva Attitude 10)Devotional frame of mind He always used to say before we take up any service, we must be convinced about the intention of that service: 11)Humility – Depend on Supreme personality of Godhead Lord Krishna My gurumaharaj considered humility as the topmost ornament of a vaishnava. He guided us on the understanding of what is humility in our devotional path. “The devotional mood is the mood of humility, a state of complete helplessness. “Unless we are firmly fixed in the spirit of humility, knowing that we are helpless eternal servants of the Lord, devotional life will not flourish.” “The devotional mood is, I am the most fallen. I am the most unqualified. This mood is extremely important. As long as we cultivate this type of understanding in Krishna Consciousness then Krishna will always protect us and Krishna will always come to us.” 12)Guru-disciple relationship. He instructed us that we should begin our day’s work with prayers to guru and seek his blessings. At the same time he emphasized that begging for blessings is not enough but we must perform our duty diligently. Quoting ‘Yasya deve para bhakti…..….’ Quoting Srila Prabhupada, my gurumaharaj used to say, our success in Krishna Consciousness is not dependent on our material prowess but depended on accepting spiritual master’s instructions as life and soul. 13)Appreciation of other religious scriptures “Take the essence of every religious scripture and use it, apply it.” We saw last year on the eve of his vyasa-puja several top religious leaders from all over the world gathered at Sri Mayapur Dham by his will. He thus effortlessly presented even in his physical absence to several religious leaders that KC was not any sectarian or ritualistic religion but it is the eternal religion of every living entity. It is certainly very difficult for a conditioned soul to emulate the same scenario as was accomplished by my gurumaharaj last year at Sri Mayapur Dham, but such events can definitely inspire and charge us to keep up our faith or increase our faith in the KC process and learn or practice to live peacefully in the midst of the pluralistic society. 14)Promoting devotion to God through culture and art To sum up, I would consider it as my gurumaharaj’s mercy if the eternal gems we have shared in this article benefits you in your devotional endeavor. In our devotional journey there is nothing beyond increasing our love to Lord and His pure devotees. Until we attain this love, we will continue to see every situation of our life as a paradox causing constant bewilderment, but ignoring this fact we continue to judge every episode that occurs in our life as if in proper or rational perception, although it is a conditioned perception.
