The Gita Changes for Chapter One: BBT puts them online

By Kaisori dasi (BBT)

Now you can see “the changes” for chapter one of Bhagavad-gita As It Is, at www. BBTedit. com/changes. You’ll see the revisions Jayadvaita Swami made to the purports, in the actual book where he made them. You’ll also see the revisions made to the word-for-word meanings. (The translations were done separately.)

Annotations give the reasons for most of the changes (and most often also tell what Srila Prabhupada’s original manuscript said). Images show relevant portions of the manuscript itself, as well as two sample pages.

See the meaning Srila Prabhupada actually intended where the first edition told about:

* the customary giving up of affection during gambling performances
(1.12, purport)

* the mind of Arjuna, “predicated by the Lord in friendly joking”
(1.25)

* Arjuna’s showing “disregard for self-interest” (1.30)

* people who were anxious to live in Lord Rama’s kingdom (1.36) See where the editors for the second edition actually changed the Sanskrit text itself (1.36)–back to the way Srila Prabhupada had it.

All this and more, in a free, highly informative PDF download.

The scans for the Preface and Introduction are already online at www. BBTedit. com/changes.

BhakTV Launches New ISKCON Film in Sridham Mayapur

BhakTV Launches New ISKCON Film in Sridham Mayapur

On Oct 31, 2009 in Sridham Mayapur at Srila Prabhupada’s Samadhi Auditorium a new documentary film series by Vasudeva dasa titled “NO SUFFERING ON SAFARI, The Bangladesh Experience” was premiered. This film follows a 2008 ISKCON preaching tour and pilgrimage to various towns and Vaishnava holy places in Bangladesh. The additional significance of the event was that it is the first new film released by BhakTV Productions in sixteen years.

The Premiere was well attended. It was presented by Vasudeva das, a resident of Mayapur from France, who created BhakTV twenty years ago, and became known for a series of documentaries he produced in the 1980s on India’s holy places and festivals. These films have since been distributed worldwide by ISKCON , notably the popular TIMELESS VILLAGE OF THE HIMALAYS. Many senior ISKCON members may fondly recall this old ITV classic, which, to our knowledge, remains the only ISKCON film ever to receive an award from a conventional film organization. The award was conferred by the American Video Conference in 1989, which sponsored a competition among professional documentary makers from across the entire USA. Furthermore, the award was presented by the American Film Institute, Billboard, and the Hollywood Reporter, three of the most prestigious film Institutions in America.

For the then budding film maker Vasudeva das to have his first serious production even nominated for an award had been quite unexpected. Beyond this, after the nominated film won first prize, more than a few incredulous eyebrows were raised while reading the good news in ISKCON World Review. Vasudeva das recalls, “Nrsimhananda prabhu of ITV in LA is the one who prompted me to enter the contest. He and Siddhanta prabhu thought I might get lucky with a nomination in the ‘Religion and Philosophy’ category. There was no question of winning the actual award. So we simply took it as Krsna’s miracle.

As This year marks the 20th anniversary of TIMELESS VILLAGE FO THE HIMALAYS, the film was screened at the Premiere to introduce Vasudeva’s long awaited new film. Guests of honor and speakers were present: Umapati Maharaja opened the presentation, followed by MIHET Head Teacher Atul Krsna prabhu, and Mayapur Administrative Council (MAC) member Vaikuntha Nitai prabhu. Finally Jayaprataka Swami (JPS) Archives director Deva Gaura Hari prabhu spoke, mentioning his interest in distributing the film to Jayapataka Swami’s disciples worldwide, as it features extensive excerpts of His Holiness’s preaching work in Bangladesh.

This current release is the first of a three part series. It focuses on North-East Bangladesh, which includes footage of ISKCON’s Sylhet temple, Srivas Angan, Madhava Kund, Kulaura Farm, and the Comilla pandal program. The second release is scheduled to be edited by the Gaura Punima festival of 2010. It will focus on the Vaisnava tirthas of South-East Bangladesh, namely the birthplaces and bhajan kutirs of the famous brothers Munkunda and Vasudeva Datta, and of Pundarika Dham near Chittagong, which has now developed into a major ISKCON center in Bangladesh. Finally, the third release will take us on a boat cruise to the Jungles of Sunderband, home to the famed Royal Tiger of Bengal, and to the Sri Sri Rupa-Sanatana Goswami’s birthplaces near Jessore, also a major ISKCON complex.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of their deities, the dynamic London devotees are hosting special guests Yamuna, Shyamasundar, Gurudas and Malati prabhus for a week beginning on Sunday 15th November, until Sunday the 22nd November. The 22nd Nov (Sun) as per the lunar calendar is the actual appearance day of Sri Sri Radha Londonisvara and we have full day of festivities which include Pushya abhisek, ecstatic Harinam & Kirtans with As Kindred Spirits. Everything will be broadcast live on the internet.

Other highlights include Harinama to historical places visited by Srila Prabhupada, offerings to Sri Sri Radha Londonisvara from Their long term servants, and lots of talks and interviews.

It has been forty years since ISKCON made its first mark on the streets of London. The unmistakable sounds of cymbals, saffron and shaven heads charmed and startled Oxford Street in London’s West End, reaching the Evening Standard with the headline “Hare Krishna Startles London”. Nowadays ISKCON is woven to the fabric of London life yet still parades of devotees sharing the Holy Names with shoppers, revelers, business people and international tourists is very common.

Shyamsundar Das, who was one of the first Krishna devotees in London and a friend of George Harrison, said: “To many, the Hare Krishnas represented the psychedelic spirit of the sixties. Although their philosophy is one of actual abstinence, of non-violence and pure vegetarianism.” 1969 was the year that the late George Harrison of the Beatles produced the chart-topping “Hare Krishna Mantra” single, and the Hare Krishnas made their first appearance on British television, singing live on Top of the Pops.

Govindas was one of the first vegetarian restaurants in central London which is still going strong. The first ever Radha Krishna deities in ISKCON were in London and Srila Prabhupada installed them in Bury Place, the first ISKCON temple in the UK near the British Museum. In 1979 the Temple moved to Soho Street, just off Oxford Street which is Europe’s busiest shopping street.

Many London dignataries will attend the Saturday night Troxy event. Mark Field MP remarks, “As the Member of Parliament for the Cities of London and Westminster I am looking forward to take part in the celebrations marking the 40th Anniversary of ISKCON in London. The chanting processions of the orange-garbed devotees in Oxford Street have become a welcome and indeed exotic part of the city’s multi-cultural landscape. The help that members of the Hare Krishna movement have given to the homeless has been much appreciated and I hope that they will continue their good work for many years to come.”

So don’t miss this life-time opportunity to see their Lordships alongside the associates They choose to assist Srila Prabhupada with Their appearance 40 years ago.
