Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Wednesday 30 June 2010--Beware of False Gurus--and--Chanting, But No Ecstasy YetA spiritual master who declares that he is God or allows his disciples to make propaganda that is he is God is a charlatan. He is not a bona fide spiritual master. Such so-called gurus will tell their disciples that they can also become God, that all they have to do is come out of illusion and realize that they are God. But God does not have to realize... Japa Group: I Was Impressed By His EffortsYesterday I spoke with Haridas Dasa about his chanting. He told me that sometimes when the chanting is going bad and when he feels he is marching through mud, if he makes a concentrated effort to improve, he pulls out of it and his chanting clears up. He has a full-time job and does most of his chanting early in the morning, which he says, by far is the best time for japa. He takes his japa seriously as his most important sadhana. He said that if he can't hear his chanting than he doesn't think Krishna in reciprocation will hear him, and so he tries very hard to hear the sound of his own chanting. I was impressed by his efforts, although he was very humble about his own japa performance. From Bhajan Kutir #478 Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: why we should follow Srila PrabhupadaI don't say, "Follow me." I say, "Follow Krsna." Why...? Don't mistake that. I say... My vision is that Krsna says, "Surrender unto Me." I say, "You and everyone, surrender to Krsna." >>> Ref. VedaBase => Discussion with Indians -- January 18, 1971, Allahabad Gaura Nitai das, Mayapura, IN: The meaning of "Home"Some of my friends and family members have read and appreciated this book by Radhanatha Swami entitled "The Journey Home." In this video Radhanatha Swami describes what he means by "home." I have posted only the first part (out of 7 parts) of the talk he gave at the Mumbai launch of his book. The rest of the talk can be found here. At this site there are also many other wonderful video clips. The site is entitled Radhanatha Swami Weekly. H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 4823:56 A.M.I slept alright last night. I woke with a foggy head, but it didn't require medicine. My chanting was sluggish and not as quick as yesterday, but I fought the good fight and kept my head above water. I chanted and gained some ability to concentrate inwardly on the chanting. In our reading of Caitanya-caritamrta we are on a section that emphasizes the importance of chanting the name of Krishna. Prakasananda Sarasvati was blaspheming Mahaprabhu, but in referring to Him he did not use the name Krishna. He called Him a pretender and a sentimentalist and in doing so three times he used the word Caitanya. Tapana Misra reported this to Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and asked Him why Prakasananda Sarasvati was not able to say the word Krishna. Lord Caitanya said that because the Mayavadis are such offenders to Krishna and try to cut off His hands and arms and legs and say He is not a person, they are not permitted to utter the holy name. Krishnadasa Kaviraja then gives the example of persons who were able to chant the name Krishna upon being attracted to the lotus feet of the Lord. He tells about the four Kumaras who went to Vaikuntha, and when they saw Lord Vishnu and smelled the aroma from the tulasi at His lotus feet they were able to chant Krishna and they became devotees. Sukadeva Gosvami is another example of a person who was able to convert from being a relisher of brahmananda to a relisher of the pastimes of Krishna and the holy name of the Lord. Persons like Prakasananda are only able to say words like atma, brahman and Caitanya. I asked Yadunandana Maharaja why Mahaprabhu was given an indirect name of the Lord such as Caitanya. He reminded me that Nimai Pandit's sannyasa guru, Kesava Bharati, actually gave Him the name Krishna Caitanya in recognition of the fact that He was always chanting the name of Krishna. All this material in Caitanya-caritamrta reminds me how fortunate I am although I am a fallen person who had no knowledge of Krishna, yet I have been given the name of Krishna and I chant it every day while even great Vedantists are unable to say these glorious names. We should all be fortunate and grateful that we can chant Krishna's names and say them always. My Godbrother Jayadvaita Maharaja not only chants his required rounds but often spontaneously out of emphasis he ejaculates the words "Krishna Krishna" during the day frequently. We are so lucky to be H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: June 1971 VisitPrabhupada SmaranamHere is another picture of Prabhupada's June 1971 visit to Boston. He is holding a mass initiation. He appears to be chanting on beads. The devotees are seated in a semicircle around him. About ten people got initiated. It was a warm day, and the windows were open and a devotee cooled him with a peacock fan on a long pole. I performed the fire sacrifice pouring ghee into the fire. Prabhupada was so very worshipable to all of us. We were completely thrilled that he was staying with us in our temple, even though it was a fairly old house and he had only one room for his quarters. (He refused to stay in the VIP suite of the Boston Sheraton although we had paid for it; he said a hotel was a brothel.) While we looked up to him and treated him as good as God, he was also very intimate and friendly with us, like our father. He did not make any heavy criticisms about the temple management, but had many kind and encouraging words for everyone. The result of his visit left the temple and the devotees surcharged for a long time. We were staunch and positive despite obstacles, such as hoodlum hecklers to our house, because we knew we were following his orders. Recently I posted a picture of Prabhupada descending from an airplane and wrote on the importance of his travels. This visit to an outpost like Boston, which was remote to his world travels, proves the life-giving nature of his travels. By personally initiating devotees in Boston and installing Radha-Krishna Deities, he touched our lives with deep, permanent impressions; by living with us for just a few days he solidified our commitment to life-long Krishna consciousness. He was compassionate and intelligent in his strategies for capturing the hearts of the devotees and bonding them to his person and his instructions. This picture captures the immortality of the tie between the guru and his disciples. H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Serving Radha and Prabhupada1.

Today I published a picture of H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: The Miracle of EyesightFree writeWith the miracle of eyesight I have been able to see my spiritual master and Sri Sri Radha and Krishna. I understand that hearing is even more important than seeing. I have heard from my teacher about Sri Krishna's teachings in Bhagavad-gita. With my ears I can hear the descriptions of the beauty of Sri Sri Radha-Krishna and what Their pastimes are like. If I had to live without sight I would make the best of it. But it is a wonderful facility, and I wish to express my thanks to Krishna for giving me a lifetime of seeing. I should appreciate it more and be grateful to Him. I have been able to read books and write books (although even these things can be done by the blind). I have been able to appreciate sunrises and sunsets and seas and mountains and flowers and a myriad of beautiful things that can be seen with the eyes. I have been able to see Radha and Krishna standing beside one another, and I have seen Gaura-Nitai dancing with upraised arms beside each other. Now that I have seen Them with my eyesight I can see Them in my mind by meditation. In fact it is only by mental sight that I can see the spiritual form. (The Deity is a form that can be seen by the eyes, and when we are liberated our eyes of love will be anointed and we will be able to see the spiritual world and take part in serving Krishna in His pastimes there.) Without devotion our eyes are like the eyes painted on the feathers of the peacock, the Srimad-Bhagavatam declares. Eyesight is a wonderful gift, but it has to be understood in connection with devotion. Seeing with lust or greed is not profitable, but causes our downfall. We have to see through the sastras (sastra-caksuh) in order to actively have knowledge of the world beyond our material vision. Our eyesight is meant to see Krishna as His worshiper. We should see the world as a place of opportunities for service. See people to share Krishna consciousness with them. See flowers to offer to Krishna. See evil forces to avoid and fight against. See with the eyes of a servant of a servant of the Lord. ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Gundica Cleanup and Snana-Yatra this Sunday!A sure sign that the annual Festival of India (Ratha-Yatra) is just around the corner are the annual Gundica Cleanup and Snana-Yatra festivals! This Sunday, we will be celebrating Gundica Cleanup (Temple cleanup) and Snana-Yatra (Bathing festival). Every year, before the Ratha-Yatra festival, the temple is lovingly cleaned by the devotees. This is following the example set by Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who held the first Gundica Cleanup some 500 years ago. The famous Ratha-Yatra parade in Jagannatha Puri begins at the Jagannatha Puri temple and proceeds all the way till the Gundica Temple. Preparing for the arrival of Lord Jagannatha, Caitanya Mahaprabhu with His associates personally cleaned the entire temple. The clean-up will start at 9:30am in the temple room and will continue till 3:30pm. Special Lunch (prasadam) will be provided for those who come out to help clean! After immersing yourself in cleaning the temple, join us celebrate Snana-Yatra, a wonderful festival, wherein Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balarama and Lady Subhadra will be bathed amidst amazing kirtan and chanting! After the bathing ceremony (Snana-Yatra), Lord Jagannātha apparently becomes sick. He is therefore removed to His private quarters, where no one can see Him. Actually, during this period the body of the Jagannātha Deity is repainted, this is called nava-yauvana. During the Ratha-Yatra Festival on July 17, Lord Jagannātha will once again come before the public. Thus for thirteen days after the bathing ceremony, Lord Jagannātha is not visible to any visitors! A warm invitation goes out to you and your family to join in the wonderful celebrations of Gundica Cleanup and Snana-Yatra festivals this upcoming Sunday! Don't miss out this last opportunity to see Lord Jagannatha before his grand Ratha-Yatra festival! ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Maha-Harinama on Canada Day!!!Let's celebrate Canada's day in our fun Vaisnava way!!! This Thursday, devotees will get together to share the Holy Name, prasadam and books with the public during Canada Day festivities in downtown Toronto. This will also be an amazing way to let people know about the upcoming annual Ratha-Yatra festival as we will be handing out as many cards as possible! We will meet at the temple at 3pm and then head downtown for the harinama accompanied by drumming, singing and even an accordion! We will be back at the temple by 6pm where delicious prasadam will await us! A special request goes out to ALL devotees to dress as colourfully as possible, in full devotional attire, as we want to amaze Torontonians with the beauty of Krsna consciousness, both with our appearance and with our smiles! We're looking forward to seeing you there! Srila Prabhupada's Letters1969 June 29: "I request you and your friends, George and John, to make a nice Hare Krishna record sung by the most popular Beatles and assisted by our devotees. That will be very nice. To make this Hare Krishna Movement popular through any source possible, that is our business." Srila Prabhupada's Letters1970 June 29: "I am very glad to know that your sales of our literature and books are very good and improving more. It is natural that distribution of literatures should increase as people hear more about our Krsna Consciousness Movement, so distribution of our books and literatures is our major propaganda program." Srila Prabhupada's Letters1970 June 29: "We require personalities like you to join this movement wholeheartedly, but because you have got wife and children I am hesitating to ask you to close your business. As a responsible head of a family you should consider this point seriously." Srila Prabhupada's Letters1971 June 29: "Number one engagement is that you must chant at least 16 rounds Hare Krishna Mantra daily. Speak according to sastra and try to convince all conditioned souls about the real truth. You can surrender by doing your best to preach this Krishna Consciousness Movement. That will make you perfect." Srila Prabhupada's Letters1971 June 29: "From Moscow, I went to Paris. we have got a very nice center there. I stayed only one day but they arranged nice meetings and a press conference and people were favorably impressed. In different papers they admitted that our movement is genuine." Srila Prabhupada's Letters1971 June 29: " Very soon I will be sending you so many dictation tapes you will be over-burdened with work. Presently I am in L.A. where I just returned from a very successful Rathayatra festival in San Francisco. From here I will be going to London to participate in their Rathayatra festival on 4th July. Shortly thereafter I will be going to New York." Srila Prabhupada's Letters1973 June 29: "I see your wife is busy distributing prasadam - send some for me. Now you have a proper field husband and wife, please do it nicely. Make your next attempt in Moscow. Your transcendental competition is there. I want to see who will come out triumphant." Srila Prabhupada's Letters1973 June 29: "Yes, travel around the world holding Hare Krishna Festivals, you have my blessings. The communists by dry philosophy have spread all over the world. We are spreading festivals, feasting, philosophy and salvation - why shall we not overthrow them?" Gaura Nitai das, Mayapura, IN: Missing Mayapur Sometimes the Lord takes us away from His devotees, Himself and His abode in order to increase our appreciation of the object of affection. This is in fact probably one of the most esoteric subjects in the philosophy of Bhakti Yoga. The two opposing poles of separation and meeting are known in sanskrit as vipralambha and sambhog respectively. The meeting is accompanied with joy, celebration, personal interaction and all of the things that come with meeting one's beloved. In this world of matter the meeting aspect is the only type of association we can appreciate. In spiritual consciousness the separation from the beloved is also a source of happiness. No doubt there is the common saying that absence makes the heart grow fonder. In spiritual consciousness however, this " heart growing fonder" is increased to a degree that we cannot imagine. The great souls describe that the separation of pure souls from the all attractive Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna is actually a form of unfathomable bliss. This is where the spiritual consciousness and material consciousness diverge. I will not go into detail regarding the great science of the bliss of spiritual separation and meeting, but suffice it to say that for the pure soul they are both on the platform of pure happiness. I cannot say that I am in ecstatic bliss in separation from Mayapur dhama. It is encouraging however to know that that the more I cultivate this attachment for the holy dhama of Mayapur, the closer I will come to experiencing ecstasy in both the meeting and separation of this place. For now....I am doing everything I can to get back to this sacred place we call Mayapur. Kurma dasa, AU: Sweet Potato Pie
K from Queensland wrote: "I absolutely love all of your recipes, and have recently been asked to make a vegetarian pie including seasonal vegies such as pumpkin, but i cannot find a good recipe anywhere. Would you be so kind as to send me one! My reply: Yes, here's one I made earlier (20 years earlier). Just as well recipes don't age. Sweet Potato Pie This popular savoury pie features the delicious orange-fleshed kumeras, native New Zealand sweet potatoes. This recipe was from the lunch menu at Gopal's Restaurant in Auckland, circa 1990. PREPARATION TIME: 1/2 hour, PASTRY RESTING TIME: 1/2 hour, TOTAL BAKING TIME: 25 to 35 minutes, YIELD: one 20 cm (8-inch) pie. Pie crust 1 cup unbleached plain flour, 1 cup wholemeal flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 cup butter, up to 3/4 cup iced water. Filling 3 cups kumeras, peeled, steamed, and mashed, 1/4 cup each of the following vegetables (all lightly steamed and drained): cauliflower pieces, french beans cut into 2.5 cm (1-inch) lengths, corn, chopped spinach, carrot cubes, and broccoli flowerets, 1/4 cup butter, 1 tablespoon grated ginger, lightly sauteed, 1.5 teaspoons salt, 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, 3 teaspoons soy sauce, 1/2 teaspoon yellow asafoetida powder, 1-2 tablespoons raw sugar, Handful chopped fresh herbs of your choice. Sift the 2 flours and salt into a large bowl. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Add enough chilled water to hold the dough together. Knead briefly, working quickly to avoid over-handling. Cover the pastry in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1/2 hour. Pinch off two-thirds of the pastry and roll it into a smooth ball; then, with a rolling pin, roll it into a circle that comfortably fits inside and up the sides of one 20 cm (8-inch) buttered pie tin. Prick with a fork and bake in a preheated oven at 200°C/390°F for 10 to 12 minutes or until light golden brown. Thoroughly combine all the ingredients for the filling. Spoon the filling into the pie base. Roll the remaining pastry to the required size, place it on top of the pie, and crimp the edges of the top over the pie base. Prick with a fork and place in the oven. Bake at 190°C/375°F for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Variation: Place 1 cup (250 ml) grated cheese on top of the pie halfway through the baking.
