4:08 A.M
I woke frequently during the night and got up feeling sleepy. But I’ll push on and try my best. Narayana said he is going to write down some notes for me to try to deal better with my frequent headaches, some suggestions about preventative medicines etc. Yesterday I wrote thoughtfully in this japa impressions section about the point that one should not tell when one’s bhajana is going well. The comparison is made to keeping a door open which blows out the flame in the temple. You should keep your bhajana secret. But after so many years of struggling I really would want to tell the good news if I start reaching a steady and even ecstatic platform. I don’t think it would be harmful to do so as long as I did it humbly. I would not claim I had reached Krishna-prema but just say that things were going better and that I was not feeling depressed. We’ll have to see when that day comes, but I’m thinking not to be silent about it when I reach better chanting.
When the Olympic champions
are interviewed they are
usually humbled and sometimes
even refer to God as the
cause for their success. Such
talk is appealing rather
than ego boasts, “I am the
greatest! I was born to skate!”
So what is the harm if I
give thanks to Radha and Krishna
for improvement in my japa?
You know you have to work
hard daily and practice and say
”I gave it all I got”. Such
admissions are not signs of
pride but admittance that it
didn’t come easy from above
but required all your effort.
Yet in the last word you
have to thank Nama Prabhu,
and there is nothing puffed up in that.
Prabhupada Smaranam
Here are colorful pictures of Prabhupada during his summer of 1976 visit to the skyscraper temple at 55th Street in Manhattan. It was a great triumph to return to New York City eleven years after he arrived there from India as a self-professed “beggar” with forty rupees and no means of income and no followers. Now he had a hundred disciples living at 55th Street, approximately a hundred temples worldwide and thousands of disciples. As he rode in the car from the airport, Prabhupada pointed out places he frequented when he lived alone in the city in 1965, like the Superette and the bookstores.
The first photo shows Prabhupada on the temple vyasasana having his feet washed by Tamal Krishna Goswami. Prabhupada appears pleased and relaxed. TKG was the GBC secretary of New York, and the building was a beehive of activity including a full sized fancy restaurant and the overhead was supported by an army of book distributors who roamed 5th Avenue and the other places such as the New York airports.
The second picture shows Prabhupada in his twelfth floor suite, sitting back before the customary low table and gesturing with a talking mudra. Present in the picture is Radha Vallabha Dasa, Prabhupada’s Bhaktivedanta Book Trust manager who looks on attentively and adoringly as his spiritual master holds forth. The wall is beautifully wallpapered and comfortably cushioned for the use of our spiritual master even though he was just scheduled to stay for a few days, including the 1976 New York Ratha Yatra.
The third picture shows him continuing to communicate with his hand movements. His staunch personal servant, Hari Sauri, is present in the picture. Unfortunately the 55th Street temple proved too costly to maintain and the devotees had to sell it after Prabhupada’s disappearance, but while the devotees lived there Prabhupada loved it and considered it a “beacon” from which to spread Krishna consciousness.
Guru’s Dog
1.
I’m sorry I’m not a better devotee.
Tukaram writes ten poems describing
himself as the Deity’s dog, sitting at
His feet, chasing away intruders, accepting
pets and scraps of food. He feels
like a saint and doesn’t even know
if he annoys the Lord. He’s so
intimate a worshiper.
I’m not so much intimate, but
I may claim I am like a
dog. I hang around. I’m
always barking in japa (in
my mind). I write for You every day. I play music and
claim it is worship of You.
I’m a wild, carnivorous dog.
I’m a timid dog who stays
at home and only wants to
go out once a day for his
constitutional, around the block.
I spend most of my time alone
but calm and I claim I’m at
Your lotus feet, like Tukaram claims?
I live in my ego, sometimes I come to you and ask for
help and forgiveness.
At my best I praise You.
I cite your lilas like
the time You miraculously
entered the mouth of Aghasura
and saved all the cowherd boys.
In Vrindavana they
don’t think You are God. Whenever
You do anything wonderful
they say it was Vishnu—
who lifted the mountain
and themselves
helping with their sticks. They
can’t tolerate that You are
aisvarya.
But I worship You as
aisvarya, a God of majesty
who should be bowed down to and considered the
divine controller of all the
cosmos. Do I
do that? I am so
feeble.
I know you like madhurya
and so I rant about
Your exchanges with the gopis.
I don’t know if I’m allowed
to enter such intimate affairs,
but I’ve heard them knowing they
are the best and the inner aspiration and identity of all
but a few of our Gaudiya acaryas.
2.
I’m just a lowly dog at
best, sitting at the feet of my
Guru Maharaja, going out on a few events
for him, writing memories
and eulogies of his flawless
character. That’s my place. Dog of the guru.
And by that connection I
link to the aisvarya and
madhurya of Krishna consciousness
meditation and devotional service.
Even when you were here,
Srila Prabhupada, I was a
rebellious whimsical dog,
I basically obeyed. I
worried, I doubted the
direction of the movement, but
I dedicated my youth to its mainstream.
Now I work in separation,
calling to you from a distance,
always calling to you, deliberately,
consciously, I come to you
wagging my tail or sometimes with my tail between my legs.
I am your dog. Please don’t
kick me away. I know I’m
one of many. You remember
me, and I don’t know if you
like my writings very much but
they’re all I have to offer
to you.It’s my doggish
service, like fetching a stick, like guarding your yard, and I dare to lick your toe.
”Gods Own Dog” ten poems
by Tukaram. He did it well.
They are amusing
and filled with his devotion.
He takes the humble position, and so do I.

These shacks look like they might be serviceable for painting studios. They might, however, get too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. The house we plan to move into in Stuyvesant Falls, New York, has a garage in the back and that has a possible space that could be used as a painting studio, but I have a couple of personal problems. One is headaches. I have been getting frequent headaches, and you can’t paint when you have one. But during the ten year period when I flourished in my “outsider art” painting career, I also had headaches. I don’t remember whether I was getting less headaches then or not. The other problem is I don’t know if I still have the inspiration to paint. I could be doing small (8”x12”) drawings with colored pencils now, but I have no inspiration. Maybe it was a phase and I grew out of it.
In New York I could set myself up with a painting studio and just try and see if I still have it in me. It was a wonderful period to go through. I did so many paintings of Radha and Krishna and Prabhupada and of sadhus and of sankirtana dancers. Then I just did ordinary faces and monster faces and put Vaisnava tilaka on them. I don’t know if I have the “naïve” humility to draw in my crude, unskilled way. You have to be willing to begin in your awkwardness and then get better at it.
The orthopedic doctor and the physiotherapist both asked me not to paint using broad strokes of the arm because of my broken collarbone. That is another serious consideration against doing it. Maybe I could learn to paint in a different way. It’s a rather sad story if I decide to retire. But I can occupy myself in another way with devotional practices and physiotherapy practices instead. At least I have the most important abilities to write and to chant and to read or to hear readings. I just want to occupy my years in creative Krishna consciousness.

Krishna-kripa das, Mayapura: Gaura Purnima Lecture Notes—Varsana Swami—Alachua
Because Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the Original Personality of Godhead Himself, Krishna, combined with Radha, the benefit achieved from Him is far greater than that from the usual yuga avataras. Golokera prema-dhana harinama-sankirtana: His sankirtana movement gives love for Krishna.
In the maha-mantra we both worship Krishna, in vaidhi [according to regulations] which can give us santa [neutrality] and dasya [servitude] rasa [relationships with Lord], and Radha in raganuga [spontaneous love], through which we can enter the higher rasas [relationships of friendship, parenthood, and conjugal love].
Radha is the emblem of Vraja bhakti.
Why did Lord Caitanya select Puri for His pastimes? Puri is where devotees congregate by the millions to perform harinama-sankirtana in Ratha-yatra, and it was this sankirtana He came to teach.
Subhadra told Rohini that she would, with outstretched arms, guard the door in Dvakara while Rohini narrated the Lord’s Vraja lila before Krishna’s queens so Krishna and Balarama could not enter and become overwhelmed with ecstasy. But hearing the pastimes herself, Subhadra experienced so much ecstasy her eyes opened widely and her arms contracted and entered into her body, and thus she could not prevent Krishna and Balarama from hearing the narration. When Krishna and Balarama heard the narrations they also manifested ecstatic forms, which Narada requested they allow to be worshiped somewhere on earth. Thus Jagannatha, Baladeva, and Subhadra are worshiped in those forms in Puri.
To allay the feelings of separation of Vrajavasis, Uddhava was requested to go to Vraja, but because he had already been and promised to bring Krishna, He felt they wouldn’t believe him. Balarama also doubted they would believe him as He previously promised Krishna would return. Subhadra volunteered, telling a story that Krishna, Balarama, and herself started out at the same time from Dvakara, but Krishna was delayed reciprocating with many kings along the way.
When Radha was almost dead from separation from Krishna, Candravali touched the feet of Radha, and admitted she appeared as Her competitor by yogamaya, just to increase the ecstasy of the Lord’s pastimes.
Once a professor gave a lecture on Ratha-yatha. He spoke mostly to the nondevotees, saying it was a festival of recreation. “Recreation” he explained as “re-creation”, recreating the meeting of the Vrajavasis with the Lord at Kuruksetra.
Imagine not seeing someone for years and then finally seeing someone people say is that person, and then finding it is someone else. Lord Caitanya in the mood of Radharani expressed that She wanted to be with Krishna as He was in Vrindavana not as He is in Dvaraka.
The gopis complained about hearing instructions on yoga to remember Krishna. They did not need a process to remember Krishna for their devotion is like rivers flowing to the sea.
When Lord Caitanya danced behind Lord Jagannatha’s cart, it stopped. And when Lord Caitanya came in front, it started again. The car of the Lord moves by superior power.
Balarama’s conch shell, representing duty, draws him back to Dvaraka where he must kill demons and thus protect the world, including Vraja. But ropes of love draw Him to Vraja. Subala and Radha appeared as if in a dream to invite Him to enter again their respective pastimes in Vraja.
Ratha-yatra is the image of the Lord’s own heart.
When Gangadevi [the Ganges River] wanted to go underground because of sinful situation of Kali, Krishna told her in 5000 years My devotee who worships me by My mantra will gather up devotees from all over the world, and they will bathe in your waters and purify them.
Lord Caitanya first caused the appearance of the holy name, and then inspired all to engage in sankirtana.
Sankirtana means using everything and everyone, harmonized in one voice, for the glorification of the Lord.
If the whole world was delivered by the mere presence of Lord Caitanya, what is the need for His pastimes of delivering Jagai and Madhai, Raghunatha Dasa, Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya, etc.. He did it to show how anyone can be delivered by His process.
Before Lord Caitanya no one ever dreamed one could enter into Vraja prema [the loving service mood of Krishna]. But it is that prema, Lord Caitanya came to distribute.
You cannot enter Vraja without an invitation and someone to lead the path. Therefore as Srila Prabhupada himself said, “I have created your good fortune.”
The whole world can be delivered as it was 500 years ago. During Lord Caitanya’s pastimes, even those who blasphemed attained Vaikuntha and those appreciated attained Goloka.
One would consider it fortunate to be appointed to the king’s court. No one could imagine being adopted by the king and living in His own chambers. Lord Caitanya is giving an intimate relationship with God like that.
In separation from the guru we internalize everything he taught and come to realize he is still present.
Krishna is bound by love alone. Radha and Krishna, in the form of the subtle sound of the maha-mantra, reveal that love to us.
We should never forget this love is the ultimate goal, and we should never stop following Srila Prabhupada’s instructions to share this love with others.

Japa Group: Innumerable Rounds Off The Beads
If you are always repeating the Hare Krsna mantra whenever you can — within yourself or even aloud — it will solve many problems. If Krsna is with you all the time, then you will not be in anxiety—if you can develop this constant chanting. It will take time to be able to always chant Hare Krsna. Srila Prabhupäda used to say, “Chant sixteen rounds on beads and then innumerable rounds off the beads.”

Ms. Cobb chides him for running the water too long while he shaves or showers. And she finds it “depressing,” she tells him, that he continues to buy a steady stream of items online when her aim is for them to lead a less materialistic life.Mr. Fleming, who says he became committed to Ms. Cobb “before her high-priestess phase,” describes their conflicts as good-natured — mostly.
But he refuses to go out to eat sushi with her anymore, he said, because he cannot stand to hear her quiz the waiters.
“None of it is sustainable or local,” he said, “and I am not eating cod or rockfish.”
As awareness of environmental concerns has grown, therapists say they are seeing a rise in bickering between couples and family members over the extent to which they should change their lives to save the planet.
In households across the country, green lines are being drawn between those who insist on wild salmon and those who buy farmed, those who calculate their carbon footprint and those who remain indifferent to greenhouse gases.
“As the focus on climate increases in the public’s mind, it can’t help but be a part of people’s planning about the future,” said Thomas Joseph Doherty, a clinical psychologist in Portland, Ore., who has a practice that focuses on environmental issues. “It touches every part of how they live: what they eat, whether they want to fly, what kind of vacation they want.”
Mayapur Online: Happy Gaura Purnima!
Happy Gaura Purnima. In today’s Caitanya lila class, HH Bhakti Purusottama Swami said that, “In the material world, one minus one is zero whereas in vaikunta, it is one but in Mahaprabhu’s lila, one minus one is equal to two. Acaryas explain that if you take out a cup of water from fully filled bucket, in vaikunta, it remains same, like purnamada purnamidam. In Mahaprabhu’s lila, if you take out one cup, it gets filled doubled, that means, the bucket overflows. This is the special mercy. The Lord freely distributes the rare treasure of Krishna Prem without considering any qualification”. In Mayapur, the mercy is overflowing.
