Gaura Vani, USA: Mantralogy Spring 2010 Magalog

In the summer of 2009, some of our Mantralogy crew members, including Gaura Vani and the Mayapuris, toured the USA. On one long drive we all discussed what it would take to make the fast—growing kirtan music “scene” stronger. Some of us have roots in the early 90’s punk rock, which relied heavily on zines, or small, fan-produced newsletters/magazines as a method of sharing insights and creating community around a shared passion: in this case, music. As some of the kirtan scene’s largest fans, we discussed how great it would be to create a zine for us and our friends in the kirtan world.

Although times have changed and most communication nowadays is digital, the printed word (and image) still could have a relevant place in the kirtan world today. At least, that is how we see it.

Coupling news and feature articles with the Mantralogy Lifestlye catalog, we have come to call our version of the zine a “magalog,” which is to be produced biannually. We hope to bring you a small taste of the kirtan scene with exciting products, events and music. We welcome collaboration in any respect, so if you have an idea or would like to contribute, please contact us here. Rasa Acharya, Editor

ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Daily Class - Atul Krsna Prabhu - Srimad Bhagavatam 11.18.31

SB 11.18.31: A saintly person should never let others frighten or disturb him and, similarly, should never frighten or disturb other people. He should tolerate the insults of others and should never himself belittle anyone. He should never create hostility with anyone for the sake of the material body, for he would thus be no better than an animal.

Srimad Bhagavatam 11.18.31 - The devotees' botheration into materialistic life of common people apparently seems like disturbance but actually it is blessing upon them.

Pretending to Be Mean

Toronto, Ontario

It was the second conservative evening in a row that I called in a few of our community actors to get the chance to channel their creative energies, and to put out their worst. By worst I mean “be mean”. Be the Kauravas! Jab those Pandavas! Knock them out of their misery! Let greed and ambition prevail!

For those who know the story of The Maharbharat, it runs a classic theme of fratricidal confrontation with Pandavas as the virtuous sector and their cousins as the greedy bloodhounds.

I played for the actors one of those screechy, scratchy electronic dance pieces and I asked those enthusiasts to enact the scene of the vicious Kuru assembly and to move to the beat. Gambling, selling people away and dishonouring a queen in a roomful of men was the actors fixation. All nastiness. The body motions I called for were jerky, sharp, angular, passionate, aggressive and restless.

Not until Krishna enters the room (rehearsed by one actor) did the sizzling sinisterism simmer. Krishna.

It had been a while since our group had come together and we realized what we had been missing. Example I can suggest, “Let’s be mean. Let’s be dirty.” And that we are. We can identify with it, but not to the extreme as the Kauravas may have conveyed. When you do play-act “mean” you don’t really mean it. You can say I know this feeling or emotion but I am different from it.

That’s why the dramatical exercises are so therapeutic. It let’s you separate the you from the sensations.

Now, if only I could separate or distinguish between the sensed and the soul?

Doubting Where Is the Devotion

Toronto, Ontario

Praveen is an avid attendee at the early morning sadhana, spiritual gathering at 4:30AM. He enjoys the walking, as I do, when we allot ourselves time for mantra meditation. Serene would be a word to describe the world at this time of day. By 7:30 AM Praveen leaves for work. It’s a routine.

Then as is customary, the few of us ashram monks sit for a hearing of the Bhagavatam discourse. We are extremely fortunate to take ear drops of philosophy. But today is different.

As I turn a knob to have the fan run overhead for air circulation I think not of the fan’s revolving motion. It’s nothing new. That’s what fans do. Their propellers spin. My next move was to sit down to hear one of the monks speak from Canto 5 under that fan. Yes, that segment of the multi-volumed Bhagavatam which is highly technical, not philosophical, and discusses the revolutions of the sun, the moon’s movement and other orbital and heavenly bodies that revolve, something like the movement of the fan. There are chapters which delve into Vedic cosmology and the structure of the universe, some of which run parallel to modern science and some of which bear no synthesis whatsoever to current testimonies.

The Bhagavatam is said to be a literary masterpiece of exclusive devotion, therefore, certainly the mind wanders to question about tracing bhakti, or devotion, out of such a mechanistic rendering as found in Canto 5. I had to search for an answer. And here, in brief, is what was revealed (and I say that with no mystical innuendos intended).

When we read of the Vedic version of the universal makeup, we find that inhabitants from any sphere described have their established deity such as Indra, the sun, the incarnation Rama, etc. It appears that no place is divested of devotion. All persons honour and center their lives around some divinity.

And then we read of the sun god, Arunadev, and how with the aid of a mammoth wheel’s axle lodged into a majestic mountain time is told. All this effort which is quite an endurance test is also a matter of devotion.

There is one more thing. When we look at such complexities as planetary workings, it certainly puts you in awe and triggers the question, “What intelligence brought this all on?” And that response leads to bhakti.

So when we peruse through this great book Bhagavatam, it’s like a sugarcane, “wherever you bit is sweet”, our guru used to say. Wherever there is Bhagavatam wisdom, from any page, you will find devotion.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: '381' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

4:16 A.M.

I slept peacefully last night but didn’t wake up until just before 3 A.M. I’m annoyed with myself for waking up so “late” and having to start my japa at a late hour. I’ve only chanted eight rounds so far. It’s not just the low quota that I’ve chanted but the fact that I rushed them and chanted them to get them done rather than to savor them and to meditate on them. I’ll try not to do that for the remainder of the rounds, but I know I’ll have a rushed feeling. It’s so much better to get up very early and to be able to chant with relish and not feeling pushed and pressured. But at least I’m wide awake and don’t have pain. I want to express some love for the chanting in my poem today if I can. Krishna and Krishna’s name are the same, and I have some realization of that. I can only cling to Krishna through His holy names. Without His holy names I do not realize Him in actuality. Prabhupada has given us Krishna primarily in His names although he has fully given us Him in His activities and pastimes also. But the first thing he gave us was the names and the kirtana, and he said it was very essential to chant sixteen rounds a day. So you really can’t go forward in Krishna consciousness without chanting your rounds, your sixteen rounds. And to chant them you have to chant them with quality. And that means not rushing them to get them done.

Japa Group: Don’t Minimize The Holy Name

You must be attentive and control your mind. Don't chant unconsciously. That implies that you have an intellectual conception of chanting: "I just can’t get into it. It's not important." Sometimes people will read directions how to operate something, but they have so many other responsibilities that they just can’t pay attention to the directions. It doesn’t mean anything to them. It's not important to them. They may say, "Somebody else can do it. I can't concentrate on it. It's just too trivial." So don't minimize the holy name in the back of your mind.

Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA: Informed Faith to Fact - Krishna Conciousness

When we say Krishna Consciousness is a science, what does it mean?

In modern science, normally, when we test any theory, first the scientists create what we call a null hypothesis. A Null hypothesis is one type and a prevalant method of testing.

A Null hypothesis is basically the opposite of the original hypothesis. So to begin with, normally, the burden of proof is on the researcher to prove that there is some sought of association or connection between the variables tested. After collecting evidence, the researcher will either reject the null hypothesis or fail to reject the hypothesis.

For example, low education levels lead to low socio-economic status. This is the hypothesis. Now the null hypothesis will be that there is no relationship between low education level and socio-economic status. The researcher will collect evidence to either reject the null hypothesis or will fail to reject the null hypothesis.

Similarly, coming back to Krishna Consciousness, the hypothesis is - Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The null hypothesis will be that there is no connection between Krishna and His position as the Supreme Godhead.

Then, we collect evidence to test. The only difference between material and spiritual science is that evidence in material science is collected externally such as in a lab, or inside the ground or in the sky or in a community etc. In spiritual science, the evidence is internal inside our heart. This is the big difference. Nevertheless, there is evidence. Hence this collection of evidence internally in spiritual circles is called self-realization. Therefore as we practice the methodology (chanting and serving) of collecting evidence (purification and self realization), we will eventually "realize" Krishna as the Supreme God and I as the servant.

This can happen this life time or multiple lifetimes after depending on the researcher who takes to this process with due diligence and proper execution of methodology (chanting and serving).

Therefore, to conclude, just as in any science there is literature and practical experiments. Similarly in Krishna Consciousness we have vast literature in the form of Bhagavad Gita and the like and practical experiments of which primary is chanting followed by humble service. Studying the literature and executing the practical aspects of the literature will lead the researcher to finding evidence and so one day can transit from informed faith (hypothesis/theory) to fact.

My journey as a researcher is in this continuum of going from informed faith to fact that Krishna is Supreme God!

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: Cities Prepare For Life With The Electric Car

Click here to read the full article from the New York Times

In nearby Silicon Valley, companies are ordering workplace charging stations in the belief that their employees will be first in line when electric cars begin arriving in showrooms. And at the headquarters of Pacific Gas and Electric, utility executives are preparing “heat maps” of neighborhoods that they fear may overload the power grid in their exuberance for electric cars.

“There is a huge momentum here,” said Andrew Tang, an executive at P.G.& E.

As automakers prepare to introduce the first mass-market electric cars late this year, it is increasingly evident that the cars will get their most serious tryout in just a handful of places. In cities like San Francisco, Portland, Ore., and San Diego, a combination of green consciousness and enthusiasm for new technology seems to be stirring public interest in the cars.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: “For the Anniversary of My Death” by W. S. Merwin

Every year without knowing it I have passed the day
When the last fires will wave to me
And the silence will set out
Tireless traveler
Like the beam of a lightless star

Then I will no longer
Find myself in life as in a strange garment
Surprised at the earth
And the love of one woman
And the shamelessness of men
As today writing after three days of rain
Hearing the wren sing and the falling cease
And bowing not knowing to what

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'A Morning Walk' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Prabhupada Smaranam

Prabhupada’s characteristics. He is walking on the beach with a few men. Lord Caitanya told Raghunatha Gosvami not to dress luxuriantly. Prabhupada didn’t dress in rags, but he wore the same uniform every day. Simple sannyasa dress. A grey chadar, a swami hat, his canvas shoes, his cane. He walks and talks, then stops to gesture and poke his cane in the sand and holds out his hand in a graceful, yet forceful mudra. They gather in to listen. He stands for a few moments for emphasis. Then he begins walking again. Always the same and always new. It’s thrilling to see exactly when he will start off walking again. Will he look at you? “Why don’t they understand? Why are they such mudhas?” Visvanatha Cakravarti said the prostitute keeps changing her dresses to attract new customers. But a devotee wears the same clothes.

Prabhupad on the morning walk

He stops with a far-off look in his eyes. He is right here with his men, but at the same time, he is looking far off. He is looking down at the beach, out at sea, at Krishna.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Quality of Free Will' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Free write

A masked man with a leather Nazi jacket, holding a gun. A musical conductor ecstatically leading an orchestra with a baton. Such different worlds, such different men. One reeks of violence, hatred and death. The Nazi symbols on his jacket are insignias of evil, inhuman men with an insane ideology. The musical maestro seeks to uplift his audience with sublime pleasure transporting them to experience the beauty of musical composers. The Nazi is in the mode of ignorance, the maestro is in the mode of goodness. What brings them to such extremes of difference? It is a matter of the influence of personal association and past activities. Maybe since earliest childhood the Nazi has lived with people who espoused the doctrines of Adolf Hitler’s hatred for minority people, especially Jews, his mad desire for “living space” by forcefully invading and subjecting other nations, his warmongering spirit, his plan for an “ultimate solution” for the oppression of Jews, and his fate for ruining his own nation in a mission to become the sole world power.

On the other hand the maestro was raised in association of musically cultured people with genteel aspirations to learn and practice the art of classical music, intended for the upliftment of culture and spirit. For the musician to be in the state of pure goodness (suddha-sattva) he would have to be dedicated to the music of composers who’s only gain was to glorify God, as in case of Bach and other purely religious composers as well as kirtana leaders. So much depends on whom you associate with. God does not want souls to come under the influence of fascist dictators and other criminal and corrupt persons. But because we are made in the image of God, we possess His quality of free will, although in an infinitesimal degree. We are free to go against the codes of right morality and religion which the Supreme has introduced into the world through His faithful representatives. The living being is tiny and vulnerable, and he easily falls under his own bad instincts by following false leaders who promise change for the good which is actually evil masked in charismatic lying propaganda. It is the responsibility of those who follow the righteous path of God consciousness, to unmask and disarm evil doers and present the life of pure goodness to the people of the world.

Kirtiraja giving a B.g to the Pope

I have included a picture of Prabhupada’s disciple, Kirtiraja Prabhu presenting a copy of Bhagavad-gita As It Is to Pope John II, an excellent act of ecumenical preaching. We don’t know if the Pope or one of his subordinates favorably read the book, but it is the duty of the preachers to make the attempt to present Krishna Conciousness to whomever they meet.

Sutapa das, BV Manor, UK: Conservative or Liberal?

From a layman’s point of view, the Vedic culture may seem to delineate quite conservative social boundaries for women. Some may call this restriction, oppression, even subjugation, but one could also see it as a symbol of respect. The woman plays one of the most important roles in society. They are giving birth to and nurturing the future generation. These children will be tomorrow’s leaders, and the wellbeing and prosperity of society rests upon them. It’s no small task – for the woman or the child.

When the president attends a social function he is surrounded by numerous security staff and bodyguards. This is not because he is regarded as incapable, irresponsible, or weak. It is in fact, quite the opposite. The protection is a sign of the reverence and appreciation that society holds for his position and responsibility. The president readily accepts such arrangements, knowing them to be for his personal protection and simultaneously favorable for the execution of his duties. The Vedic culture unhesitatingly gave the same status to women.

Whenever any culture is analyzed it is imperative that we understand the goal behind it. If you see a shopper at Tesco's dressed in a spacesuit it may well raise a few eyebrows. However, if you go to a NASA space station and see a similarly dressed person stepping into a shuttle you won’t blink an eyelid. Why? In the second scenario, the culture, the goal and how they link together is extremely clear. Life’s ultimate goal is to understand we are all spirit souls – man or woman, black or white, its all inconsequential. The culture of the Vedas aims to create a peaceful, progressive and supportive environment within which everyone has a golden opportunity to strive towards this spiritual understanding. Although the psycho-physical traits of our bodies are undoubtedly temporary, to acknowledge and address them is extremely important everyone's spiritual journey.
