New Issue of Krishna Kathamrita

Gopal Jiu Publications is pleased to announce the release of issue #13 of Sri Krishna Kathamrita magazine, “The Most Merciful Lord”.

Lord Jagannath in Puri is celebrated as Patita Pavana, the savior of the fallen. With new research work, traditional art, and translations of little-known Oriya scriptures, this issue of Sri Krishna Kathamrita looks at the history of the extraordinary kindness Patita Pavana Jagannath has shown on so-called “low-caste” devotees as well as those who are genuinely fallen. It also examines why, if Lord Jagannath is so merciful, the policy of his temple in Puri is to bar entrance to foreigners and others.

Articles include:

* WHAT NO INCARNATION EVER GAVE BEFORE
His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada explains the amazing mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu as described in the famous anarpita-carim cirat verse from Caitanya-caritamrita.

* THE ORIGIN OF THE DEITY OF PATITA PAVANA
Devotees and historians are unsure about the origin of this deity of Jagannath by himself who stands inside the gate of the temple in Puri. This article explores the stories of the most-cited versions, and in particular the account that he appeared for Ramachandra Dev II, the devotee king of Puri who was barred from the temple after being forced to convert to Islam.

* JAGANNATHA’S MUSLIM DEVOTEE: BHAKTA KAVI SALABEG
It’s ironic that the person who is perhaps the most famous devotee of Jagannath in all of Orissa was denied entrance to Jagannath’s temple due to his Muslim birth. The life and songs of Salabeg reveal the heart of a devotee, who, finding himself alone and bereft of anything else, piteously cried for the Lord.

* DASIA BAURI, JAGANNATH’S OUTCASTE DEVOTEE
Like Salabeg, Dasia Bauri was considered low-caste due to his birth and was denied entrance to the temple of Jagannath in Puri. Yet the extraordinary mercy Dasia received from the Lord has rarely been obtained by anyone in this world.

* JAGANNATH’S MERCY ON AURANGZEB
The Muslim ruler Muhiuddin Muhammad Aurangzeb (1618-1707) is infamous in Indian history for his religious atrocities. Aurangzeb was a breaker of deities and temples. Yet, unknown to most people, he once had a vision of Lord Jagannath, after which he donated some property to the Lord.

* PATITA PAVANA DARSHAN
Sri Srimad Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja gives an esoteric purport behind the darshan of the deity of Patita Pavana Jagannath.

* THE DAYANA FESTIVAL OF LORD JAGANNATH
This little-known festival takes place at the Jagannath Vallabha Gardens in Puri at midnight on the thirteenth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Chaitra. The ceremonial deities of Balaram and Krishna steal some bunches of the sacred dayana plant, and the next morning are locked up in a room all day for their mischief. The article includes the story behind the event, as well as mantras, procedures, and rare photos from the festival in Puri.

* THE ORIYA POET DINA KRISHNA DAS
An introduction to the life of one of the most famous Gaudiya Vaishnava poets of Orissa.

* JAYA JAYA JAGANNATH!
A first-time translation done for this issue of Krishna Kathamrita of a popular song by Dina Krishna Das that is recited daily in the Jagannath temple in Puri.

* INJUNCTIONS REGARDING ENTRY
Another first-time translation, this article consists of excerpts from the Sanskrit sthala-purana known as Niladri-mahodaya. These verses are the standard followed in Puri regarding who should not be allowed inside of the temple, and the procedures that should be followed if somehow they enter.

* JAGANNATHA’S BRITISH “GUARDIAN”
Paradoxically, the formal policy of the Jagannath temple to not allow foreigners or outcaste people originated with a law enacted by British “foreigners”. This article looks at the unusual story behind this policy.

* FAMOUSLY REFUSED
If one examines the history of the temple of Jagannath over the last few hundred years, they may be surprised to see who has been denied entrance, who has refused to go in, and who has been allowed.

* THE OPULENCE OF PURI
According to Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy, knowledge of the Lord’s power and opulence makes love shrink. For this reason, the followers of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu aspire for eternal service in Vrindavan and are not interested in the Lord’s opulent abodes such as Dwarka and Vaikuntha. Also, there are two divisions of the Lord’s holy names — primary and secondary. The primary names describe the Lord’s pastimes, while the names describing the Lord’s relationship with the material world are secondary. The primary names lead to love of God, while the secondary names bring piety and liberation. “Jagannath” and “Patita Pavana” are secondary names, and Puri is a place of great opulence. Understanding this, why did Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who is in the mood of Srimati Radharani, come to Puri, and why did he address the Lord there as “Jagannath”?

* ONLY HINDUS ARE ALLOWED
This piece presents some surprising, and occasionally amusing, pastimes of Lord Jagannath involving the policy of barring entry into the temple. It includes first-time translations done especially for this issue from the Sanskrit sthala-purana Vamadev Samhita, describing what happens to Jagannath’s wife Lakshmi when her husband leaves to visit his gopi girlfriends at Gundicha, Vrindavan. This article sheds a whole different perspective on the popular festival of Ratha-yatra.

An exciting opportunity to really make a difference...

Navina Krsna das: We are looking for:

1. Candidates for teaching i.e. you are either about to make a career choice or want a career change!

2. Candidates for a PhD in education

3. Teachers at primary, secondary and 6th form level

4. Teacher trainers

If any of the above interests you, please read below for more information and get in touch:

info@i-foundation.org

Background

There are about 7,000 faith schools in the UK. Out of these, only 1 is Hindu. This has meant that, unlike parents of any other religion, Hindu parents do not have the choice to send their children to Hindu state-funded schools.

Would you like to be part of changing this?

Who are we?

I-Foundation is the promoter of Hindu state education in the UK. Since inception, I-Foundation has partnered with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness to provide the faith nurture for all our school projects.

We work with Government, local authorities, national and local community groups, and Hindu organisations in order to promote and represent Hindu interests in statutory education. We are the promoters of the UK’s first, and so far, only Hindu state school, the Krishna-Avanti Primary School in Harrow.

I-Foundation was established in 2003 as a registered charity. Our aim is to help children realise their spiritual, moral and academic potential in a welcoming, secure and supportive environment centred on loving service to Lord Krishna. We hope to enable pupils to enjoy learning, develop character and competence, and prepare for the responsibilities of adult life.

Our admissions policies are open to, and inclusive of, all strands of Hinduism, as well as encouraging applications from non-Hindus. The faith nurture within the schools is based entirely on the teachings of ISKCON’s founder, Srila Prabhupada.

What does this mean for you?

Our plans for expanding Vedic state education means that we need outstanding teachers.

So…

if you are involved in any way with teacher training, or

if you are a teacher at primary, secondary or sixth form,

if you are a graduate who might consider a PhD research programme in

education, or

if you are a graduate who might consider a career in teaching (we are working on developing courses that can help experienced and new graduates use their existing degrees to get teaching qualification), or

if you are deciding upon a career choice…

Please get in touch! We desperately want to hear from you!

In September 2010 we will be holding open days at the Krishna-Avanti Primary School for all those that are interested in getting involved in any of the above possible ways. We hope to inspire a new wave of teaching professionals for the coming generations of children.

What does success look like?

Ofsted said of our first school:

“The pupils’ joy in coming to school is very evident and is demonstrated in their regular attendance, punctuality, first class behaviour and sense of purpose.”

“The pupils play and work in total harmony and respond enthusiastically to their teachers. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is outstanding.”

They also graded our safeguarding/child protection policies and practices as ‘Outstanding’. This is the type of response we wish to see for all of our future projects. Success will mean that we can roll out this model of education in Barnet, Redbridge and Leicester. Critically, this includes secondary education.

Success also means that we can train teachers in Vedic pedagogy to complement their professional qualifications and thus empower them to deliver outstanding teaching in outstanding schools. It means that we have our own teacher training resources, processes and methodology, combined with the best of class professional qualifications.

What does the future hold?

We are now working towards expanding provision at both primary and secondary levels in several areas around the UK. This will include:

Barnet All-though School

Leicester Primary School

Redbridge Primary School

And we continue to look for further opportunities to provide faith-based education at primary and secondary level in sites across London and the East Midlands where there is evident demand.

At the same time, we will continue to work towards developing teacher training and academic research that can inform and guide all of our educational work.

Contact

If you are a teacher, or might consider a career in teaching, or if you might consider teacher training or academic research in the field of education - we would like to hear from you. Please contact us on info@i-foundation.org. We will then email you the dates and times of two Open Days we will hold in September this year.

My meeting with HG Aindra Prabhu…

By Caitanya Caran Dasa

It was in 1999 when I visited Sri Vrindavan Dhama for the first and only time, 3 years after I joined ISKCON. I was living in Amsterdam-temple as a brahmacari, and my temple president at that time asked me to bring a nice clay Mrdanga for our temple

An Offering Of The Heart

By Radhanath Swami

As the effulgent sun of Sri Aindra Prabhu’s divine personality has risen in the spiritual world of Goloka Vrindaban, the sun of his physical presence has set in Gokula, the Vrindaban of this world. And we cry in separation.

The glorious life of Aindra Prabhu personifies determination and devotion, all aimed exclusively for the pleasure of Sri Sri Radha Shyamasundara. His heart floods like the Yamuna while being inundated by the monsoon of Srila Prabhupada’s Divine Grace. His love for Vrindaban is the life of his soul.

Aindra Prabhu was infinitely beyond being a musician. He passionately renounced all of the charms of the material world to exclusively dedicate his heart and soul to chanting the Holy Names of God. Day and night his entire being was engrossed in the names of Radha Shyamasundara. He breathed for kirtan. His heart beat for kirtan. Lord Chaitanya empowered his kirtan with an inconceivable sweetness, power and musical skill that attracted our hearts like no other. While singing kirtan Aindra Prabhu’s emotions would erupt like a volcano of devotion that inundated and mesmerized our hearts.

I believe every stone, brick and pillar of Krishna Balaram Temple and every tree and particle of sacred dust in Raman Reti is permeated with the sound vibration of Aindra Prabhu’s devotion. If we open our hearts we will hear. Aindra Prabhu exported the sweetness of Vrindaban’s love throughout the world and we are forever grateful.

As thousands of devotees cry upon the realization of his physical loss, I feel at a loss for words. Aindra Prabhu was so dear a friend and Godbrother to me. The kindness, love and encouragement that he always showered upon me are a treasure that I pray to remember forever.

Aindra Prabhu, your beloved Lordships, Sri Sri Radha Shyamasundara have now brought you into Their eternal pastimes. We celebrate your life with tears of gratitude.

Advent of Kali Yuga

By Radhanath Swami

Just have faith that Krishna is non different than his name. Srila Prabhupada used to tell us that if you simply have this faith that Krishna is non different than His name, then you are liberated from all suffering. And that was Srila prabhupad's only weapon. He had no money. He hardly spoke understandable English, but when he came to the west, he was armed with invincible unflinching faith.
