H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Monday 1 November 2010--When the Road Becomes Home--and--With No Ambition Will Anyone Work?====================================================== Thought for the Day--Monday 1 November 2010 ====================================================== Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and to you, our treasured readers. Our purpose is to help everyone awaken... ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Lord Rama's Coronation Ceremony Yesterday we were invited to participate in the celebration of Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya, after 14 years of exile in the forest. It simultaneously commemorated the coronation ceremony of King Ramacandra, one of the most popular incarnations of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That most colourful celebration was held at the Brahma Visnu Siva Temple in Carrum Downs. Here's a slideshow. Akrura das, Gita Coaching: CREATING A CULTURE OF PURE CHANTINGClick on the title to access an article. "Krishna is attracted to a humble heart, not a heart filled with pride. To suspend thoughts of our daily dramas while chanting is a challenge, but it's required. The more we can simplify our lives and center our activities on Krishna, the easier it is to put aside plan-making and worry while chanting. Krishna will reveal Himself more and more, and we will see how He is our maintainer and protector." "...if we want to become good at something, then we must find people who are already good at it." "I've found that focused, attentive chanting benefits all my other activities. I can be more present and attuned to my environment and feel Krishna’s presence more acutely than before." By Arcana Siddhi devi dasi ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Today's Darsana Here's a little slideshow of how exquisitely the Deities have been dressed by Their talented servants this morning. Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: What about sex desire?Yoga student: "What about sex desire? I want the spiritual, but I have such a strong desire for sex." Prabhupada: "Hatha-yoga is also for controlling sex desire. If you have such desire, you are making no progress." Yoga student: "How does a devotee of Krsna control sex desire?" Prabhupada: "Automatically. Krsna is so beautiful. We are accustomed to this habit for a very long time. Become sincere, and Krsna will protect you." Yoga student: "Sometimes I have a sex urge..." Prabhupada: "What? You? Everybody! In birds, beasts, demigods--the binding force is sex. The material life means sex desire. Free from sex desire means advancing in spiritual desire. If you have a strong sex desire, pray to Krsna. Know that this is the attack of maya. Pray, and maya will go away. You cannot fight with maya with your own energy. Maya is presenting herself more beautiful than Krsna. But Krsna is more beautiful." >>> Ref. VedaBase => SPL 7-3: A Visit to Boston, 1968 Japa Group: Prepare Your Heart For Krsna Hare Krsna dear devotees. The Lord is always eager to receive our service and bless us, sometimes we can't see His blessings, but He is always protecting us in any situation - especially His dear devotees....the ones that chant the His holy names and follow spiritual by the guidance of a genuine spiritual master. Here is a good example that we can see the Lord.
Srila Prabhupada Quest for Enlightenment How can we prepare ourselves to, our hearts to see the Lord, one of the processes is by chanting and hearing the holy names, you chant and hear and little by little your heart you be prepared to see Krsna. May this week be blessed. your servant, Aruna devi Kurma dasa, AU: Holy Cow! Dairy versus Vegan Andrea Gupta from Bethnal Green UK writes: 'Hello Kurma. I am a new but devoted fan of yours and read your blog everyday. Recently I have been having heated debates at work with a born-again vegan who says that as a vegetarian I am a dammned hypochrite for eating dairy foods. Have you written anything about this subject so I can study up and be able to better present my case for thoughtful dairy consumption?' My reply: Yes Andrea, I have a lot of information. Go here, read the blog and click on the subsequent links that you find on that page. That should keep you busy! H.H. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:‘One should not concoct chants and mantras’ “Taking advantage of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, there are many unscrupulous devotees who manufacture a maha-mantra of their own. Sometimes they sing bhaja nitai gaura radhe syama hare krsna hare rama or sri krsna caitanya prabhu nityananda hare krsna hare rama sri radhe govinda. Actually, however, one should chant the names of the full Panca Tattva (sri krsna caitanya prabhu nityananda sri advaita gadadhara srivasadi gaura bhakta vrnda) and then the sixteen words Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, but these unscrupulous, less intelligent men confuse the entire process. Of course, since they are also devotees they can express their feelings in that way, but the method prescribed by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s pure devotees is to chant first the full Panca-Tattva mantra and then chant the maha-mantra Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. The concocted mantras may be good poetry but they cannot help us to go forward in devotional service. In such chants there are also many discrepancies. Strictly speaking, when chanting the names of the Panca-Tattva one should fully offer his obeisances: sri krsna caitanya prabhu nityananda sri advaita gadadhara srivasadi gaura bhakta vrnda. By such chanting one is blessed with the competency to chant the Hare Krishna mantra without offense. When chanting the Hare Krishna mantra, one should also chant it fully. One should not foolishly adopt any of the slogans concocted by imaginative devotees. If one actually wants to derive the effects of chanting, one must strictly follow the great acaryas. This is confirmed in the Mahabharata: mahajano yena gatha sa pantah:” The real path of progress is that which is traversed by great acaryas and authorities. I woke up at 10:30 last night with a headache and took medicine and went back to sleep. I woke again at 12:30 with another headache. This time I got up from bed, took medicine and began chanting. The headache was quickly subdued, and I went on with my japa. The first round seemed very slow. But gradually I picked up on my pace. Slow and steady wins the race. By a little after 3:30, I had finished my sixteen rounds. I emphasized accumulation of numerical strength. I paid attention to the syllables and felt it was a decent exercise. It is a great accomplishment, in one sense, to chant the full quota early in the morning, and it gives one solace that one is prosecuting his sadhana sincerely. One should not concoct mantras but chant the authorized japa given to us by Prabhupada, Bhaktisiddhanta, Bhaktivinoda and Lord Caitanya and His pure devotees. This means the full Panca-Tattva mantra and the thirty-two syllables of Hare Krishna mantra. I began chanting too slowly for a start but gradually awakened to the regular pace and paid attention to the sounds. Nothing is as satisfying as the execution of duty in an attentive mental state, chanting in the footsteps of the mahajanas. H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: One Hundred Prabhupada Poems# 75 “I remember one time in Boston, Hamsaduta said to Prabhupada, ‘Whatever I have is yours.’ And Srila Prabhupada replied, “That I know.” They were referring to bead bags but it also refers to the life a disciple gives to his guru and the guru expects it. The guru is surrendered to the Lord and to his own guru. We are expected to do nothing less. Prabhupada was saying, in effect, ‘What’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine, that I know. But what else shall you do for Krishna?’ Always asking more, so that we can be delighted as he is in pleasing Krishna’s senses. How to do it? “He says we should work for the benefit of others. Whatever you have received from him you should try to give it to others. That is what Prabhupada is about—love for Krishna and compassion for all souls. Give them Krishna consciousness. At least try to think of ways to do it and give it to some, at least some. “Police crimes, war crimes, rebels’ crimes– Prabhupada sees through them all. Everyone is in ignorance. “These things will go their own way.’ Maya is punishing them, you can’t interfere. But you can work to save them. It’s like the whole population is crushed under houses in an earthquake or buried half-alive in a collapsed coal mine. He sees this all the time, whereas others see boys and girls enjoying in a town square, or a businessman eating a steak on the airplane. He sees death camps in the suburbs and skyscrapers, ignorance in all books. No wonder he looks grave, and his mouth corners turn down. But he is happy and generous. He drives his aging body to travel to spread Krishna consciousness, although it’s not easy. He did the most significant act of anyone in the 20th century and the world has yet to recognize it. H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: ISKCON, With All Thy FaultsI will be reading poems on the video today about the first little wave of devotees who accompanied Prabhupada to India when he had no temples there but traveled from city to city, staying at life members’ big houses, holding occasional big preaching programs in pandals and being himself. Most of your disciples were in America where you established your first temples and they were manning their posts, hearing through letters and seeing in photos what you were doing in India. We couldn’t go with you because we had our duties or we lacked the gumption for the wild adventures of India, but we were enthusiastic to know you were there opening an exciting new frontier and we would probably go there someday in the future. We heard you were more relaxed and intimate with your disciples in India, and we envied that but liked to hear about it because we liked to hear anything about you. We held our harinama sankirtanas in the streets of New York and Los Angeles and in Boston, we had ISKCON Press which you were very fond of. We were happy to serve you in separation. These were early, auspicious years of ISKCON. Seeing now in 2010 what you have accomplished in India, we can only imagine how you schemed and dreamed and prayed to Krishna to help you establish it. And Russia! And Eastern Europe, and England…. And every town and village as predicted by Mahaprabhu. Yes there have developed schisms, rivaling movements and ISKCON has lost some of its youthful enthusiasm to institutionalism. So much was lost when you had to depart. But we still have your books and instructions and your statement that our love for you would be shown by how we cooperated together to keep your mission intact. You asked us to adopt the saying, “England, with all your faults, I love thee” and apply it to ISKCON. And we are doing that. H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Approaching Krishna |
