Kurma dasa, AU: Vegie Chrissie Barbie
Before you read any further, let's clear up any potential confusion. To all my non-Australian readers: Barbie does not refer to the ubiquitous doll of the same name, nor to Klaus Barbie, the infamous Nazi war criminal. And a Chrissie is of course an Australian Christmas.
The Barbie (note the capitalisation) is one of the most revered Australian icons, along with a Hills Hoist, Fosters, Thongs and Vegemite.
Yes, the Barbie is a barbecue, or BBQ for short. For those that spend a moment to reflect, it's the ultimate crematorium for tens of thousands of poor animals.
So what's a vegetarian to do when he's invited to a Barbie? There are, in fact, many nice vegetarian Barbie options. I was once invited to a Barbie, and my hosts asked me to send some recipes ahead so they could buy the ingredients. They even purchased a brand new Weber just for the occasion. Here are those recipes:
Barbecued Haloumi and Char-grilled Asparagus with Salsa Verde
Salsa verde simply means green sauce – there are hundreds of versions. This one, smothered over slabs of barbecued haloumi cheese and grilled juicy asparagus, is made from the “big three” – parsley, mint and basil. It’s perked up with a smattering of capers. Serves 4 as an entree.
16 spears of asparagus, about 2 bunches, trimmed, 4 bamboo skewers, soaked in hot water for 15 minutes, 400g (14 ounces) haloumi cheese, thickly sliced, olive oil.
Salsa Verde 1 cup flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped, ½ cup mint leaves, finely chopped, ½ cup basil leaves, finely chopped, 2 tablespoons capers, rinsed drained and chopped ¼ teaspoon yellow asafetida powder 2/3 cup olive oil, ¼ cup lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste.
Combine all the salsa verde ingredients in a bowl.
Thread 4 asparagus spears onto each skewer.
Brush the asparagus and haloumi generously with olive oil.
Barbecue the asparagus for 2 minutes each side, or until just tender.
Barbecue the haloumi on a hot plate for 2 minutes each side, or until golden.
Serve: slide the asparagus off its skewers, place a large spoonful of salsa verde onto 4 plates and top with asparagus and haloumi. Pass the remaining salsa separately.
Trio of Roasted, Grilled & Barbecued Vegetables
Potatoes, pumpkin and sweet potatoes are all suitable for oven roasting, grilling or barbecuing over hot coals, either directly or wrapped in foil. Whichever way you choose, the accompanying pesto, salsa and chutney transform these earthy vegetables into something very special.
Idaho Potatoes with Parsley Pesto
Parley pesto is nutty, green and luscious – a perfect foil for creamy hot potato.
1 cup flat-leaf parsley, ½ teaspoon yellow asafetida powder ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg, ¼ cup toasted almonds, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, ½ teaspoon salt, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 kilo (2 pounds) Idaho baking potatoes, roasted, grilled or barbecued.
Combine all the pesto ingredients except the oil in a food processor and process until smooth. With the motor running, slowly drizzle in the oil. When well amalgamated, remove and serve. Add a few drops of water if the mixture is too thick.
Serve with the roasted potatoes. Serves 4.
Pumpkin with Mango Salsa
A brilliantly zesty accompaniment featuring sweet, sour, hot and aromatic flavours.
1 large ripe mango cut into small cubes, ½ cup diced, unpeeled cucumber, ¼ teaspoon yellow asafetida powder, 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh mint leaves, 1 teaspoon finely shredded fresh red chilies, 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon black pepper, 1 kilo (2 pounds) pumpkin pieces, trimmed and cut into suitable chunks, roasted, grilled or barbecued.
Combine all the salsa ingredients and allow flavours to combine for a few minutes.
Serve with the roasted pumpkins. Serves 4.
White Sweet Potato with Fresh Corn Chutney
The brilliant corn chutney has become one of my favourites. It marries perfectly with sweet potato, its South American partner from ages past. Best consumed the day it’s made.
2 cups cooked fresh corn kernels, or 2 cups frozen corn kernels, thawed, 1½ cups firmly packed coriander leaves, coarsely chopped, ¼ cup packed fresh mint, 1 small hot green chili, coarsely chopped, 2 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh ginger, 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, juice of 1 large lime, little water if needed, 1 kilo (2 pounds) scrubbed un-peeled white sweet potatoes, roasted, grilled or barbecued.
Process all the chutney ingredients in a food processor, pulsing on and off until the mixture is slightly chunky and loose textured. Add a little water if the mixture is too firm. Remove.
Serve immediately with the sweet potato, or cover and refrigerate. Serves 4.
Kripamoya dasa, UK: Tis the season to read the Gita
Three hundred Bhagavad-gitas were sponsored last night at a function in East Ham, in the east end of London. The grand event was put on as a team effort of several local sangas. Children put on a play of the Bhagavad-gita, with six to nine year-olds taking roles as the blind king Dhrtarastra, his charioteer and visionary Sanjaya; and of course Arjuna and Shri Krishna.
Then the adults staged a colourful drama based on a narrative from the Gita Mahatmyam. It concerned the unexpected benefits of reading the 18th chapter of the Bhagavad-gita, in which the reader is elevated to heaven after making the final chapter his daily reading throughout life.
I gave a talk on how important the Gita is, and how my spiritual master Srila Prabhupada made it a vital part of his mission to broadcast the Gita widely. Thanks to him the Gita is now available in more than 90 languages. I mentioned that the Gita is the one book that every acarya is practically obliged to comment on. Shankaracarya glorified the Gita in his Gita Mahatmya, and Yamunacarya Alavandar, Ramanuja and Madhva all wrote on it. Yamunacarya wrote his celebrated Gitartha Sangraha (well worth a read) and Ramanuja his Gita Bhasya.
Srila Prabhupada combines the best of all the acarya’s commentaries in his much-read ‘purports’ and the proof that he simply allows Krishna to shine through is that his Bhagavad-gita As It Is is the world’s best known and most trusted edition of the Gita.
Not southern India but east London: the Murugan temple in East Ham, the venue for last night’s Bhagavad-gita event
As I headed home around the M25 through a snow-covered landscape I reflected on how lucky we are that the Gita has been translated and explained by an acarya who came into our very midst and transformed so many lives. I reached home at midnight, feeling very satisfied that young devotees are taking forward Srila Prabhupada’s work in the east end of London.
Today was the recitation of the Bhagavad-gita at Bhaktivedanta Manor. Although the freezing and dangerous weather kept some would-be reciters away, this annual event is always so popular that the temple, reception and theatre were all used to accommodate the reciters. The 700 verses of the Gita were chanted six chapters at a time, and a fire yajna burned in one corner of the temple room. Although we hear that the Gita as a conversation took around one hour, it took us from 9.30 am until 2.00 pm to complete the recitation. I kept the pace and melody of the chanting throughout, and our special guest, His Holiness Bhakti Purusottama Swami, gave a short explanation at the end of each chapter. As we chanted 18.65 and 66, the Lord’s final instructions, all the participants raised their hands, happy that their vows to complete the recital were fulfilled.
Around 170 viewers were watching on www.mayapur.tv in different countries. About 1,000 Bhagavad-gitas were sponsored.

The students from the TKG Academy recite Chapter 1 from the Bhagavad GIta for Gita Jayanti. Gita Jayanti is the day we celebrate when Lord Krishna spoke the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. My two sons Vraja Kishor and NItai Pran are up first. :)

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: We don't bother with so-called scholars and anthropologists
Some of the foolish scholars, they say that Krsna was a, I mean to say, powerful, what is called? Aborigine. And the Krsna worshipers have taken Him because He was very powerful. Krsna is always powerful. But they have misinterpreted in this way. Krsna is mentioned in the Vedas. Just like these books, Brahma-samhita. Brahma-samhita is only description of Krsna, and this book was composed by Lord Brahma. Nobody knows how many millions of years ago this book was composed, but we understand that it was composed by Brahma on the authority of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Our process is to take knowledge from the authority. We don't bother whether Brahma-samhita was actually written by Brahma or not. The so-called scholars and anthropologists and... What is called? Archaeologists, they may go on talking, but we have got a very nice process, to receive knowledge through parampara system, Vedic succession, disciplic succession.

Japa Group: I Stick To The Simple Method
I stick to the simple method taught by Lord Caitanya and passed on by Srila Prabhupada. The name of Krishna is not different than Krishna Himself. Sometimes the Lord deliberately taught false philosophies, but in any case they are not to be followed perpetually. Only devotional service is the means by which to chant the holy name and benefit from its eternal proposition.

Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: A letter and a story
Letter December 6, 1974
Regarding your question, actually it is a fact that ultimately everyone should preach and distribute books if they want to please me in the best way. Book distribution must be given stress always. If you do this sincerely, it is a fact that Krishna will supply everything else required. I blindly follow my guru maharaj. I do not know what is the result. So I am stressing on this point of book distribution. He told me this personally. Book distribution is bhagavata marga and temple worship is pancaratriki viddhi. Both are important for cultivating Vaisnavism but comparatively speaking bhagavata marga is more important than pancaratriki viddhi. As far as possible both should go on in parallel lines but still bhagavata marga is more important than the other. So you are all intelligent boys, so you should judge the desire of my guru maharaj and help me in that way.
I was distributing books at Saddleback College California when a student came to my table. I showed him the Bhagavad-gita and he was showing interest. While I was speaking to the student a man came and listened to my presentation. After I explained some of the teachings of the book I asked for a donation from the student. He said he had no money. Then the man who came and was listening asked me, "Are you a Hare Krsna?" I said, "Yes I am." Then he told the student, "I'll cover this for you." He then gave me $20. Both of us were surprised. Then I said to the student, "That man is your unknown friend." Then the student thanked him for his kindness. The man then said to him, "These Hare Krsna's are good people, and they have a good philosophy." I offered a book to the man but he said he had them.

The students of Sri Mayapur International School held their Annual Sports Day on December 16th. The event was well attended by parents, community members and special guests, HH Jayapataka Maharaja, HH Bhakti Purushottam Maharaj, HG Jananivas prabhu, HG Atmananda prabhu and former SMIS Principal HG Lalita mataji.
The programme began with the Primary school students beautifully chanting the mangalacarana prayers. Then the games began.
Japa Group: The Blessings Of A Sadhu
Hare Krsna dear devotees, I hope yoru chanting is going well and the power of the holy names has changed you making your heart soft and loving to receive the Lord.
I found a very nice experience by H.H. Sacinandana Swami, here you will see his experiences and realisations with the holy names.Day 3
I am sitting before the bhajana kutira of Tinkari Baba, a saint who chanted here 192 rounds of the maha-mantra every day, fifty years ago. My tree is the same tree, and it seems to have "recorded" the transcendental sound vibration of this siddha purusa (perfected being). I feel empowered in my chanting, and I have a vision of Vrindavan and a memory of his lilas. By the blessings of asadhu, even a blind man can see the stars in the night sky. I am surely a black ant, on a black stone in the moonless night, but Srila Prabhupada found me, and with a ray of His mercy He revived me and allowed me to walk the brilliant path of Krishna consciousness.
What else will happen to this fortunate ant?
Contemplations of a Hermit - Personal Retreat in India - Kartik 2009
We all were found by a devotee and a spiritual master accepted our service, by their mercy we are blessed in this chanting and all the good benedictions come to us.
May the Lord always be with us in our chanting.

Aruna devi
