Today's Thought: The Attractor of the Attractor of Cupid Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram--Austin, Texas USA In this material world everyone is under the sway of Cupid or Madana. Even the powerful Roman emperor, Julius Caesar, his heart pierced by the arrows of Cupid, became controlled by the Egyptian queen Cleopatra. Although Cupid is so powerful that he captivates everyone, he is captivated by the beauty of Krishna. Therefore Krishna is called, Madana-mohana, the attractor of Cupid. And even though Krishna is so attractive that he attracts the attractor of everyone, He is attracted by Srimati Radharani, who is therefore known as Madan-mohana-mohini, the attractor of the attractor of Cupid. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Krishna, the Amazing Madana Mohana http://www.backtohome.com/images/Kind_Krishna.jpg Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: Bhagavad-gita at Start of Battle? In the first chapter of the Bhagavad-gita it says that the conch shells were blown by the warriors on both sides. When the conch shell is blown the war begins the very next moment. The attendance was four million soldiers (1.6 million Pandavas and 2.4 million Kauravas). Where was there so much time for the Bhagavad-gita to be spoken as the war was already on? Would four million people wait for two person's hour long conversation and then begin the war? Your servant, Dhaval Answer: Vedic Warriors Were Civilized You mention four million soldiers, but Srila Prabhupada has informed us that according to the Mahabharata 640 million men were killed during the eighteen days of the Battle of Kurukshetra. After the conch shells blew from both sides the battle was officially signaled to start. But it was put on hold when Arjuna dropped his bow and arrows and refused to fight. In Vedic warfare a soldier never attacks an enemy who has put down his weapons. The Vedic culture was indeed so civilized that millions of warriors would delay the battle until Krishna finished explaining the Bhagavad-gita to Arjuna. This is real civilization, not like the barbaric modern day warriors who will attack an enemy while he is sleeping or will kill innocent civilians. The Vedic age was so civilized that after attempting to kill each other on the battlefield the enemy soldiers would get together in the evening and socialize as friends. So it is not at all astonishing that they would respectfully hold off the fighting until Krishna finished speaking the Bhagavad-gita. Free hot water today. Our normal high for today is 40 degrees (5 C) but we won’t be seeing a temperature above freezing until Saturday. Since the start of December we have had consistently colder than average weather. We have had some snow but mostly it has been pretty calm. We see reports of huge storms but they have been going north or south of us. It is actually going to be a dry winter if this keeps up, though we have had snow cover almost continuously. A normal winter we get some snow then it melts, then we get some more. Even in January the January Thaw is normal, though this was the first year I can remember that we didn’t get one. Actually, we never have normal weather — every year is different and rarely follows “average”. Averages are calculated over decades and hold pretty true but any individual year invariably varies from it. Last fall for instance, we didn’t get a killing frost until the end of October with the average first frost being Oct 7th. Which was fine for all the greens and late stuff in the garden like Brussels sprouts but didn’t really help the tomatoes because once temperatures start going below 50 degrees (10 C) the compounds, one of which is called (Z)-3-dexenal, that give tomatoes their flavor degrade and they start tasting like store bought tomatoes. And it does get cool in October, even if it doesn’t frost. I like to plant rye on the beds after cleaning them up but until the tomato plants frost they are still full of moisture and hard to deal with. Once they frost they dry down and become brittle so it is easier to get them out of the cages I use for support and not so heavy to carry. By the time I got the cages cleared off and the beds rototilled so I could plant the rye, it was well into November which usually is fine but then December came in cold and hard, the 11th coldest on record, and with snow cover so I don’t know how well established the rye got, it seemed like it was just sprouting out of the ground so I don’t know how much biomass it will accumulate in those beds. Most of the beds I got in a little earlier and they look lush and green. I spread compost and then plant the rye so fertilizing is out of the way for the spring. I till the rye in and that gives a lot of organic matter for the biotic life in the beds to chew on. As the saying goes, “Decaying organic matter is the engine that drives soil fertility. I just got my seed order from Berlin Seeds, an Amish business nearby in Ohio. I got some buckwheat to use for green manure on empty beds for the summer and for next fall I got some of what they call N Vest Ground Breaker Plus, which is a mixture of Austrian winter peas, a deep tap rooted radish, and some forage turnips. These are all things that will do well late into the fall, with the peas accumulating nitrogen from the air. They winter kill but leave a lot of organic matter on the soil for cover and when the radishes decay the roots leave deep channels in the soil, ergo the “Groundbreaker” part of its name. Or so they say. Sounds good in theory so will be interesting to see how it goes and the effect it will have on the 2012 garden. EXPLANATION OF THE TEXT: At present I am working on an autobiographical project. The writing of this project goes slow, and I cannot write enough to print it every day. Therefore, I am posting daily a book called Every Day, Just Write. A book by that title was printed many years ago, but it was heavily edited. I am now posting the unedited edition, which is fresh reading, and I am confident my readers will like it. So please note that this journal is telling of things that happened in 1996, and it is not a journal of my present day’s activities. Presently I am quietly writing my autobiographical text, and when it is finished I will print it. Every Day, Just Write, Volume I: Welcome Home to the One Big Book of Your LifeNight Notes
You can be with Krishna and the SM by sound. Don’t stress exclusively seeing. Krishna is with you in the chanting of Hare Krishna and in His teachings in Bhagavad-gita. I read this from Namamrta tonight to four devotees gathered for the Karttika candle-lighting. It impressed me to hear it. I remembered how I heard Bill Clinton give his acceptance speech earlier this month. It was impressive. I was in Italy and picked it up on short-wave radio. In the same way, spiritually, you can be with Krishna by the “radio” of your chanting and hearing. It’s not just you chanting, but Krishna is with you. But you have to want Him. Serve by chanting. And this writing can be Krishna conscious. Krishna, Krishna can appear in His name when you write it out if you are sincerely writing to praise Him or to use the writing for finding how to serve Him. You wrote earlier today that you wanted to “break through.” You meant breaking through to some kind of freer writing or more honest, or whatever. The breakthrough is to touch Krishna, to write without any reason but to please Him, to swim spontaneously in Krishna-katha, talks about Krishna. Reading more will help, and you will naturally want to write here about what you read, not forced but spontaneously. Not forced . . . Hare Krishna. Lord Caitanya wanted to go on a tour of South India with just one brahmana assistant. He loves His devotees but wants to go and spread KC and deliver the people of the south. That was also part of His mission. Krishna, Krishna dove into the Yamuna and displaced the water 100 yards onto the banks, as if something very heavy had fallen into the water, and indeed it had because Krishna is the source of all strength. Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna. Read more and it would seem that it will become your reality. Hare Krishna. What about your desire to be a literary artist, to use it in His service? There is something to that, but He can make you the best artist instantly. You don’t have to learn it in another way. He says, “I give the ability and memory and intelligence so they can come to me.” What art do you want anyway but the art of serving and pleasing Krishna? Convey that to readers and know it yourself, the art of pleasing Krishna. Night note closes out now. It is almost 6:00 P.M. Abhay’s daughter turned blue at the hospital and was put into some type of respiratory machine and received nourishment and intravenous trips, but now she is better, still in the hospital four more days. They said it was pneumonia that some devotees brought here from India. Good old India. Is that how it came? So we chanted and lit the candles. See you in the morning, and don’t be so anxious about what you will do. Stick to reading, little by little increase it, and write although it hurts. As your diary title has it, every day, just write, just write. It will be that way rain or shine. And don’t be afraid or ashamed to tell what is going on in the little life but make that life not devoid of sravanam-kirtanam. You have no other service here, so make the best of it. It will enrich you, and you can tell people about it. November 20, 12:58 A.M. Read about Lord Caitanya, who is sometimes like a rose and sometimes like a thunderbolt. I am happy with the simple and quiet routine here although sometimes I feel it’s lacking. I may want some more outer excitement and action or feel guilty that I’m not “out there” directly preaching. But circumstances bring me here, at end of year, for a total of six weeks. Let me savor and cherish the time and use it well. Now my “mantra” is to gradually increase reading time in SP’s books and to stay focused in KC. Writing will follow this naturally. Look for opportunity to pray, call out to Krishna, ask Him for His help, “Please help me, please engage me in Your service.” By His grace my headaches haven’t been coming for a week now. Rejoice in quiet way to use time productively. When you are not able to do that, accept the shutdown of activities and go on praying and serving in another way. “Please, Lord, I don’t want to be splayed out in interests that aren’t directly KC. I want to be a devotee who thinks of Krishna, studies the scripture, restrains the senses, thinks of the welfare of others, distributes the holy names.” • Email to a friend • • Japa Group: Inattention Is The Main DoorO Krsna! He is the Lord and the incarnation of the Lord's devotee. Therefore I take shelter of Him.”
It is after 12pm (noon) on the auspicious appearance day of Sri Advaita Acharya and due to our material occupations we cannot be inside a temple room recieving the mercy of the "foremost of all the Vaishnavas who reside at Navadwip". So before taking prasadam we want to write the blog post in way of offering. Last week there was a video post describing the advent of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. http://www.radhashyamasundar.com/2/post/2011/01/sri-chaitanya-mahaprabhu-part-1.html That video shows Sri Advaita Acharya offering prayers for the advent of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabu. As one posts describes it "Advaita Acharya became increasingly saddened by the pursuit of materialistic goals that, he believed, lead to a dysfunctional, unhappy society and concluded that the only solution was to offer prayers, begging his Supreme Lord Krishna to come as an avatar and attract people back to the joy of the spiritual life. Advaita Acharya is said to have prayed for several months, crying out and worshipping him in the form of his Shaligram Shila with sacred Tulasi leaves and Ganges water. At the end of thirteen months during an eclipse of the full moon, his prayers were answered when Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born." I thought that in many ways devotees are like seedlings with the same desires. We are begging for Krishna names to be sung on every street and for His message to be in everyone's hands. We are also begging people to take to the joy of spirtual life. [Yes, Spirtual Joy, something we experienced even yesterday when Maharaj and the devotees came over and spoke, chanted and feasted in Krishna's name and pastimes]. So it is because of Sri Advaita Acharya who is the combined incarnation of Maha Visnu and Sadaisiva, that we have the oppurtunity to worship Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. This is also the ultimate demonstration or pastime where Lord Krishna is showing how he listens to His devotees and in this case actually took advent to fulfill the desire of Sri Advaita Acharya. This is in line with how Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu chanted His names...the names of Krishna to demonstrate what is needed in kali yuga. We had no knowledge and any knowledge we now have is a direct result of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada so I will turn to his words: advaitam harinadvaitad acaryam bhakti-samsanat bhaktavataram isam tam advaitacaryam asraye So gradually the author is offering respect, sri-krsna-caitanya prabhu-nityananda sri-advaita. He has already offered respect to Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda. Now it is the turn for Sri Advaitacarya. So advaitam, nondifferent, expansion of Mahavisnu. Therefore He is Visnu-tattva. He is not jiva-tattva. Therefore, He is Advaita. Advaita acyuta anadi ananta-rupam. Krsna has got unlimited number of expansions, expansion, expansion of the expansion, then expansion of the expansion, in this way. So Advaitacarya is expansion of Krsna, it is already explained. Therefore He is called advaitam, and acaryam bhakti-samsanat. This is the business of acarya, to spread bhakti cult. Acaryam mam vijaniyat navamanyeta karhicit. It is said by the Lord that “You should accept the acarya...” Acarya means one who transmits bhakti cult. Bhakti-samsanat, spreading, gosthy-anandi. One who is not spreading -- he is cultivating Krsna consciousness for his personal benefit in a secluded place, sitting and chanting -- that is also nice, but he's not acarya. Acarya means he must spread, Gosthy-anandi. Bhajananandi, gosthy-anandi. So generally, gosthy-anandi means one who wants to increase the number of devotees. He's called gosthy-anandi. And one who is self-satisfied, that “Let me do my own duty”, he is called bhajananandi. So my Guru Maharaja, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, he was gosthy-anandi; he wanted to increase the number of devotees. And the more you increase the number of devotees, the more you become very much recognized by Krsna. It is Krsna's business. Krsna personally comes as He is, Krsna, to spread this bhakti cult. Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru. Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja. He's canvassing personally. Paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam, dharmasamstha-panarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge. So -- same thing entrusted to another devotee, and who spreads, he's acarya. So Krsna says, the acarya... Here it is said, that advaita harina advaitad. So, of course Advaita Acarya is expansion of Visnu-tattva, but any acarya, he is to be considered identical with the Lord. The Lord says that, that acaryam mam vijaniyat. “One should understand the acarya.” Acarya bhakti-samsanat. Acarya means who is spreading pure bhakti cult. “That acarya”, Krsna says, “you should consider such acarya as Myself”. Acaryam mam vijaniyat navamanyeta karhicit, that... You cannot consider, “Yes, he's acarya, but not as good as Krsna”. No. Na avamanyeta. Don't deride in that way. Then there will be falldown. Acaryam mam vijaniyat navamanyeta karhicit. And in the Vedas also it is said, yasya deve para bhaktir yatha deve tatha gurau: “Anyone who has got unflinching faith in the Supreme Personality and the similar faith in guru...” Yasya deve para bhaktir yatha deve tatha gurau, tasyaite kathita hy arthah: “All the Vedic literature”, prakasante, “becomes revealed simply by these two principle”. Guru krsna krpapaya bhakti lata bija. We should not jump over Krsna without the help of guru. That is not possible. You must go through. Because Krsna says, acaryam mam vijani... Tasmad gurum prapadyeta jijnasuh sreya uttamam: “Actually one who is serious to understand higher transcendental subject matter, he must approach guru.” Tasmad gurum, prapadyeta. These are Vedic injunctions. Caksudana dilo yei, janme janme pita sei. So anyone who opens... Guru means who opens the eyes of the ignorant person. Ajnana-timirandhasya jnananjana-salakaya. Opening the eyes by giving real knowledge... Guru krsna krpapaya bhakti lata bija. So bhakti-lata, the devotional service, the seed of devotional service, can be received by the parampara system through bona fide spiritual master. And if we abide by the orders of spiritual master faithfully, then Krsna becomes pleased. That is stated by Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura, yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasadah. Ara na koriya mane asa. Narottama dasa... All the acaryas they say like that. Acaryam mam vijaniyat. Acaryavan puruso veda: “One who has accepted acarya, he knows things are they are.” Others, they do not know. It is not possible. So Advaita Acarya is the typical example, how to become acarya. All are our acaryas, sri-krsna-caitanya prabhu nityananda, sri-advaita gadadhara srivasadi-gaura-bhakta-vrnda. All of them are acaryas because they are following the acarya, Supreme Acarya, Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Therefore they are acarya. evam parampara-praptam imam rajarsayo viduh. So we have to follow the acarya. Then, when we are completely, cent per cent follower of acarya, then you can also act as acarya. This is the process. Don't become premature acarya. First of all follow the orders of acarya, and you become mature. Then it is better to become acarya. Because we are interested in preparing acarya, but the etiquette is, at least for the period the guru is present, one should not become acarya. Even if he is complete, he should not, because the etiquette is, if somebody comes for becoming initiated, it is the duty of such person to bring that prospective candidate to his acarya, not that “Now people are coming to me, so I can become acarya”. That is avamanya. Navamanyeta karhicit. Don't transgress this etiquette. Navamanyeta. That will be fall down. Just like during the lifetime of our Guru Maharaja, all our godbrothers now who are acting as acarya, they did not do so. That is not etiquette. Acaryam mam vijaniyat na avaman... That is insult. So if you insult your acarya, then you are finished. Yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasado yasya aprasadat na gatih kuto 'pi -- finished. If you displease your acarya, then you are finished. Therefore it is said, Caitanya Mahaprabhu says to all the acaryas... Nityananda Prabhu, Advaita Prabhu and Srivasadi-gaur-bhakta-vrnda, they are all carriers of orders of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. So try to follow the path of acarya process. Then life will be successful. And to become acarya is not very difficult. First of all, to become very faithful servant of your acarya, follow strictly what he says, try to please him and spread Krsna consciousness. That's all. It is not at all difficult. Try to follow the instruction of your guru maharaja and spread Krsna consciousness. That is the order of Lord Caitanya. Amara ajnaya guru hana tara ei desa, yare dekha tare kaha krsna-upadesa: “By following My order, you become guru.” And if we strictly follow the acarya system and try our best to spread the instruction of Krsna... Yare dekha tare kaha krsna-upadesa. There are two kinds of krsna-upadesa. Upadesa means instruction. Instruction given by Krsna, that is also krsna-upadesa, and instruction received about Krsna, that is also krsna-upadesa. Krsnasya upadesa iti krsna upadesa. Samasa, sasti-tat-purusa-samasa. And Krsna visaya upadesa, that is also Krsna upadesa. Bahu-vrihi-samasa. This is the way of analyzing Sanskrit grammar. So Krsna's upadesa is Bhagavad-gita. He's directly giving instruction. So one who is spreading Krsna-upadesa, simply repeat what is said by Krsna. Then you become acarya. Not difficult at all. Everything is stated there. We have to simply repeat like parrot. Not exactly parrot. Parrot does not understand the meaning; he simply vibrates. But you should understand the meaning also. Otherwise how you can explain. So, so we want to spread Krsna consciousness. Simply prepare yourself how to repeat Krsna's instructions very nicely, without any malinterpretation. Then, in future... Suppose you have got now ten thousand. We shall expand to hundred thousand. That is required. Then hundred thousand to million, and million to ten million. Devotees: Jaya! Prabhupada: So there will be no scarcity of acarya, and people will understand Krsna consciousness very easily. So make that organization. Don't be falsely puffed up. Follow the acarya instruction and try to make yourself perfect, mature. Then it will be very easy to fight out maya. Yes. Acaryas, they declare war against maya's activities, that maya instructing that “here is wine, here is cigarette, here is tha”t, in your country these advertisements are very prominent, holding both ways, wine advertisement, cigarette advertisement, naked woman advertisements, and sometimes gambling also, advertisement. What is that? Congo? Devotees: Bingo. Prabhupada: Bingo. (laughter) Yes. So this is maya. And our declaration of war with maya -- no intoxication, no meat-eating, no bingo -- (laughter) these are our declaration of war. So we have to fight in that way because nobody can understand Krsna without being free from all sinful activities. These are sinful activities. Therefore it is acarya's business to stop these nonsense activities. Otherwise they'll not be able to understand, especially the meat-eaters. They cannot understand. Nivrtta-tarsair upagiyamanad bhavausadhi chrotra-mano 'bhiramat, ka uttamasloka-gunanuvadat puman virajyeta vina pasughnat. Unless one is very expert in killing animals, he's not bereft from Krsna consciousness. That means one who is very expert in killing, he cannot understand. Therefore Christ also said, “Thou shall not kill”, the first business. Nobody will be able if one is a killer of animal, small or big, ultimately killer of his own children, killer of his own self. The killing process is so nice that it goes up to the point of killing one's children. That is now happening. Killing business has so expanded that they are killing their own children. Just see the influence of Kali-yuga. The children, they take shelter of the father and mother, thinking very safe. Now, in this Kali-yuga, even there is no safety under the care of father and mother. Just see how this material civilization is progressing. Very, very dangerous. Kalau nasta-drsam. Therefore that Bhagavata verse is there, krsnesvadhamopagate dharma-jnanadibhih, kalau nasta-drsam puranarko 'dhunoditam. Very, very abominable condition in this age of Kali, very, very. It is the beginning of Kali. Now we have to pass through 427,000's of years. Kali-yuga will make progress in that way. And people are now practicing eating their children, and at the end of Kali there will be no food available. They'll... They have to eat the children just like the snakes do. The snake eat their own children. There are many animals; they eat their own children. So don't try to repeat your birth again and again in this Kali-yuga. It will be not very happy life. Better sacrifice everything in this life and be fully Krsna conscious and go back to home, back to Godhead. Don't wait for the next life. This is very seriously repeated, that “This life I shall finish my Krsna consciousness business”, and, as it is stated in the Bhagavad-gita, that Krsna consciousness business means to understand Krsna rightly. And He's explaining Himself rightly. Where is the difficulty to finish the Krsna consciousness business? If Krsna is explaining Himself, what He is, then where is your difficulty? Krsna is explaining Himself in the Bhagavad-gita, Krsna is sending His representative acarya to teach you and Krsna is within yourself trying to teach you if you are actually serious. Then where is the difficulty? Inside, outside, always, books, knowledge -- He is prepared. So where is the difficulty to make yourself perfect in Krsna consciousness? There is no difficulty at all. Provided you are serious, you can become fully Krsna conscious in this very life. You are all young men. You are not old man like me. I have no opportunity. ~ Srila Prabhupada - Mayapur - April 6, 1975 (CC Adi 1.13) • Email to a friend • • 3D Temple Project, Cyberspace: Some Development UpdatesAll the issues with textures have being resolved! We installed our beautiful Pancha-Tattva Deities, brought from Mayapur (part of the original set of smaller replicas made at the time of the big Mayapur Pancha-Tattva). It was also the first anniversary of the inauguration of our small but charming preaching center, very well located in the capital of Brazil. Further, it was our first 6h Kirtan, which we hope to hold every month from now on for the pleasure of the Five Masters. The Deities were placed on the altar with their eyes closed and during the 6h Kirtan we awaited the moment of the installation. Going beyond its six hours, the kirtan went on as the abhishek was carried out. Everyone had a chance to bathe Pancha-Tattva. After the abhishek I gave a class, focusing on the variety of transcendental mellows one may experience in worshiping the Pancha-Tattva. Then we had our first aratik, offered by Carana Renu Dasi, accompanied by the very enthusiastic kirtan of Devananda Das. After the aratik and kirtan we served delicious and opulent prasadam prepared by Sri Vani Dasi, mother of the famous kirtaneer Amala Kirtan Das, with a cake made by Bn. Rukmini. A devotee naturally is compassionate and so He felt great compassion for the fallen people of this age.In marking the occasion in Iskcon Mayapur, His Grace, Jananivasa Prabhu, spoke on the advent and pastimes of Sri Advaita Acarya. He explained the supreme five truths. • Email to a friend • • Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA: Just surrender to Krishna - fighting is useless!Whatever Krishna does to His devotee is perfect. It is easy to say that, when everything is going the way you like it. But when everything is going against you by all material standards, to be very peaceful and undisturbed and say everything is perfect according to Krishna’s plan, that takes realization. If God is perfect, everything that comes from God must be perfect. The only imperfection is if we do not see the connection to God. Then our vision is imperfect. Everything is perfect except our vision. This consciousness is the only consciousness that brings peace. As long as you are battling against the material nature, let me tell you right now, you are a loser. No one can conquer material nature! As long as you are going to fight the problems of material life you are fighting a losing battle. Maya is so powerful (material energy). She is so powerful that the most you can accomplish is that you work so hard that Maya just plays with you to make you think you are winning.
