Michael and the Ganges

Mayapur, West Bengal

This morning I released the ashes of deceased Michael O'Regan, friend and spiritualist from back home in Canada. Michael would have it this way, the connection of the holy waters of Mother Ganga which flows through India's heartland while edging her way along Mayapur. The Ganges attracts life and death. From her waters she gives life and seems to take it away.

Michael was a very poetic, creative man who participated in the years of Krishna Conscious growth. He utilized his craftsmanship abilities in the service of Krishna over the years. Just before he passed away he expressed his love for chanting the maha mantra, "Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare."

I was fortunate to have with me a pundit for mantras. He reiterated them expertly as I discharged Michael's remains.

Almost every year a pilgrim who comes to Mayapur loses himself to the Ganges. A pilgrim will bath for purification and Ganga will claim him or her. It is said in sastra (codes of wisdom) that these waters are liberating for those who by providence are taken by her forceful flow. We are not suggesting suicide.

Doug and Max, two of three of our traveling companions to India, had gone to Ganga Devi on the previous day with caution. Doug our senior man in his sixties is taking well to all this spiritual cleansing. He did in the course of wallowing about in her special mud acquire a cut from a sharp object. Dustin, our third companion and super-efficient assistant came to Doug's aid. Hence Mayapur with all its pureness is having a positive effect on our boys. Whether its water, air, fire, ether or earth something treasurable is present here.

Thanks Gopal!

Mayapur, West Bengal

One of my heroes is not of the renounced order but is a family/business man who is able to resonate a unique presence of higher consciousness. Gopal Bhatta is an Ameican Vaishnava and possesses a real fine analytical brain, what to speak of his heart. He's great as a motivational speaker and his love for his guru is profound. He is a very mission driven person and its inspiring to see him in action and to hear him talk.

For the last few days Gopal along with a competent team was able to steer us (so to speak) in a smart direction. He shared with us a quote from one of his motivational icons. "The brave may not live forever but the cautious never live at all." To a large degree this statement does reflect the life and efforts of AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. At age 70 Prabhupada took a great risk when he set sail from India, plying over Atantic waters to reach American soil. At the expense of health he put himself in dangerous situations.

Gopal relayed to the body of devotees, both monastic and family leaders that he was returning home but detouring to Vrindavan before that. He introduced us to his wife and daughter and that he was taking them to a YES program, one of yearning, eagerness and searching.

Farewell, Gopal, until the next encounter. To speak well of someone, especially one who teaches the spiritual path is in many ways the epitone of all of our spiritual practices.

I'm feeling good.

Namahatta.org: Bhajan in Byron Bay

Vrajadhama and I went down to Byron Bay on Thursday. We spent Thursday rehearsing and sound checking with Jai Uttal for his Byron Bay concert, and the evening doing kirtan with him at the concert.

Backstage before the concert we met Tahir Qawwal, a 30-year Canadian who has been studying classical Indian singing since he was 14. The next day we caught up with him at his place and did some Qawwal and kirtan. We all knew the Hare Krishna maha-mantra and the famous hamd "Allah-hoo", so that was the intersection of our devotional chanting.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: cannot defy His orders

S.B. 5.1.11

TRANSLATION

One cannot avoid the order of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, not by the strength of severe austerities, an exalted Vedic education, or the power of mystic yoga, physical prowess or intellectual activities. Nor can one use his power of religion, his material opulence or any other means, either by himself or with the help of others, to defy the orders of the Supreme Lord. That is not possible for any living being, from Brahmä down to the ant.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 345

What else is there to say? The streets are lined with snow. The orthopedist phoned and cancelled our appointment for today because of the snowstorm. It is really not that bad and the orthopedic office is being unnecessarily squeamish. If there was another office open we would go there but this one has our records of past x-rays on the broken shoulder bone. It's useless anyway because it has been ten months and it hasn't healed. So what's the purpose of another x-ray? Just say "so I don't think we want to do surgery. So we just leave the shoulder broken and say that is it for this lifetime?" And the same for the ankle? What's the sense of our keep coming back to your office? Your dozen attempts are not curing anything so let's just forget it?" I consider the surgeries to risky at my age and I am not suffering that much now that I have an ankle brace and the shoulder isn't so bad either even though it remains broken. Sita Thakurani the wife of Advaita Acarya brought many costly gifts to present to the newborn son of Saci Mata and Jagannatha Misra. She also brought gold. The baby was born under a neema tree and so she named Him Nimai although His actual name was Visvambhara. She traveled in a palanquin. She perceived that except for His golden complexion He looked just Sri Krishna when He was a baby.

Someone Has Gone

Mayapura, West Bengal

We had lost one of our devotees. She's gone, as in passed away! She died from a stroke during her sleep. It was just ten days ago and it all happened very peacefully. Her name was Gita and she originally hailed from India.

Our small Canadian contingent from Room 505 in the Gada Building ventured over to see her husband, Madan Mohan, who I've regarded as one of our comrades from Digby, Nova Scotia. We usually walk with a purpose. Today was special. Mohan was happy to see us at his door. We did come unannounced. He did admit to us that he was staying within the confines of his home and refrain from going to the temple as many traditions in India will uphold. If there is a deceased person in the family you would not enter the temple for several days if you follow orthodoxy.

Madan Mohan, was always a resilient man. He always takes tough things well. I asked about his daughter. "for two days she was really affected, but she seems now to have gotten over the worst." She's 9 now and she's strong like her Dad.

We need only to reflect on the message of the Bhagavad-Gita which resounds in the message of transcendence. The soul moves on. The body lies with us. Life goes on or we make certain adjustments. What we are left with is inspiration, the kind that reminds us that here was a good soul, in the form of Gita, dutiful, kind, devoted, responsible, a believer in the spirit, one who knew of the impermanence of the body.

New Vrndavan, USA: New Sewing Room

To All New Vrindavan Residents,

Several months ago, the New Vrindavan Community Management Council approved a request of senior matajis who desired to restart the Radha Vrindavan Candra Sewing Department.

The paraphernalia of the RVC Sewing Dept was in disarray and scattered in several insecure locations. Their request was to consolidate all the Lord’s sewing supplies in one space. The space requested and granted was the front office space in the administrative wing of the temple.

This room was chosen because of the convenience it afforded in bringing together devotees in an easily accessible space and for the additional loft space for storage of deity sewing supplies.

The space has been recently renovated with a new floor, improved lighting and work tables. Vani dasi, who is taking on the service of organizing the space and enthusing the ladies in the community to render this personal service to Sri Sri Radha Vrindavan Candra.

Vani explains that the first project is to repair all the present deity outfits and make matching deity accessories like slips, veils and chaddars. When that project is complete, all the supplies for making new outfits will be purchased and work will be started on new festival outfits this summer!

Please encourage the community matajis by supporting this decision. And if you would like to sew or learn to sew for Their Lordships please contact Mother Vani.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the sewing room, its location or function please address your concerns directly to the New Vrindavan Board of Directors.

Your servants, NVBoD.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Another Day, Another Snowfall

More snow we have gotten 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) since the initial blow then more snow everyday, at least a little more snow everyday. More snow. The ten day forecast has flurries or more snow everyday, and not a day where the temperature will get above freezing for the next week. Our average high temperature now should be a few degrees above freezing but we aren’t getting that just more snow. Did I mention more snow?

The following picture was taken before the latest snow so imagine it higher.

I tried get a better picture while outside with more birds on the feeder bench but I only waited about 15 minutes and they remained wary. I lacked the patience to wait longer. Usually there are a lot more, even the following picture isn’t as many as it can be at times.

The crowd at the bird feeder gets much bigger when there is snow cover, I think they start commuting in from greater differences.

I have a couple of problems I have to keep on top of with this. The first is if I look out and see no birds there is invariably a cat laying in wait nearby. Sometimes it is our own cat James who likes being outside and hunting, but it seems harder for him to be catching field mice so out of boredom he tries the feeder. I chase him every time I see him but his instinct as a hunter overpowers the negative conditioning I attempt to give him. Other times it is feral cats.

The second problem is deer. With the deep snow cover they can’t easily dig down to the grass underneath so they form raiding parties and hit the sunflowers at the feeder. I catch them a lot of times and Judy our neighbor has been informed that if you hear angry yelling it is just me chasing the deer away, don’t call the cops. The only real defense I have is to put small amounts out many times during the day so if they sneak in undetected the loss is minimal.

I have got all my seed and plant orders sent off and now am compiling a list of their needs, couple of main criterion is if they are trees they can be planted outside the deer fence with a cage built around them and if they need/tolerate shade. I need to know the spacings. Some catalogs are very informative and others less so so I have been googling various plants which has the danger of finding more plants I would like to have but I have done a parameter shift so anything I find now is going into a file titled Garden 2011. I have to lay a plan for where each will be planted.

There are a zillion different plants out there but I have limited my purchases to those with something edible or with fragrance.

“(8) Useless flowers without any fragrance should not be offered.”

Nectar of Devotion 8: Offenses to Be Avoided

“So Krsna says, punyo gandhah prthivyam ca. When you smell something very fragrant… Just like in the flower. There are different varieties of flower, and they are exacting different varieties of aroma from the earth. So the good smell of the flower… In some other place it is said in the Bhagavatam that the…, when you see flower, you see Krsna smiling. That is the seeing of Krsna smiling. Therefore the flower should be utilized for Krsna’s service. Because these flowers, everything, is Krsna’s energy. Parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyate [Cc. Madhya 13.65, purport]. So specifically good fragrance of flower, Krsna says that ‘I am that.’ “

Japa Group: I Looked Forward To Chanting

Round after round came out as I watched the clock and peeked at Radha-Govinda occasionally. I've now chanted over ten rounds. I may never chant with heart and soul as I desire, but I will always try to chant with attention to the sound vibration. I was wide awake. I had a few distractions from the night before. But for the most part I looked forward to chanting and writing the journal. I pray that Krishna will one day grant me improved chanting.

Kripamoya dasa, UK: ISKCON's Old Japanese Soldiers

In 1974, Japanese soldier Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda, complete with Samurai sword, was finally discovered on a Pacific island. For the past 30 years, he’d thought World War Two was still being fought.

When I was 16, I was into all things Japanese. Martial arts, food, poetry, films. I thought that the Japanese did a pretty good job of combining spirituality, art, and a warrior code, so I thought they were worthy of further exploration. So I was very intrigued when, at that age, I heard of a Japanese soldier being discovered on a small island in the Pacific. He'd been hiding there since World War ll, not knowing that the war was over, living off coconuts, bananas, and small animals.

For 30 years he followed the instructions of his commanding officer, always hiding from the enemy in deep jungle; always thinking that the enemy would kill him if he was to come out of his secret hiding place. Attempts were made to get him to come out. Leaflets were dropped from planes flying over the island, announcing that the war was over. Newspapers were left on the outskirts of various villages and on stretches of beach. Soldiers made sweeps of the jungle to try to find him, but each time he thought that it was the propaganda of the enemy. His code of honour and loyalty to the Japanese emperor prevented him from seeing a greater reality. That soldier was Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda, who finally surrendered in Lubang, Phillipines, in 1974.

But he wasn't the only one. There was Corporal Shoichi Yokoi who came out of hiding when he was discovered hunting along the Talofofo River on the island of Guam, in 1972; Nakamura Teruo found in Moratai, Indonesia, in 1974; then Fumio Nakahira who, as late as 1980, was found hiding on the Halcon Mountain on Mindoro, Phillipines.

Finally, and almost incredibly, there was 83 year-old Sudzuki Nakauti and 87 year-old Yoshio Yamakawa who both surrendered to a reality they did not believe in – in 2005! That was an incredible 60 years spent 'fighting the Americans.'

These stories are quite astonishing for two reasons. Firstly, that these men had such intense devotion to what they thought was a noble cause – and such an aversion to being captured and subsequently dishonoured – that it kept them enduring hardship for many, many years; second, that so powerful was that frame of reference that all other information they gathered, by sight, reading in print, or hearing with their own ears, they processed according to that frame of reference. They could not experience reality because another, more intense, reality was dominating them.

Their stories are an analogy for the soul's journey within this world: never coming out of the jungle of one's personal reality – which is not real – into the freedom of that which is true; misunderstanding those who are trying to help you to be those who are trying to harm; and ultimately wasting so much time with it all.

Organisations can turn us into Japanese soldiers too: fighting a war that no longer exists, but which we need to exist in order to satisfy some deeper part of ourselves.

In ISKCON – and around the organisation’s periphery – there are some old fighters for whom it will always be the fratricidal war of the 1980s. No matter how times change and things move on, they will always live in their own personal jungle, fighting the zonal acaryas, the ever-present enemy that must be resisted. Thirty years later, they are still on the defensive, still trigger-ready for combat. But the war is long over, and life is short. It's time to surrender.

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Lord Siva Gives the Greatest Benediction!

Today marks the auspicious occasion of Siva-Ratri. We found a nice, lesser-known story about Lord Siva on krishna.com which tells of how Lord Siva gave the best benediction to a brahmana! Don't forget, we will be celebrating Siva Ratri this Sunday during our weekly Sunday Feast program!
Once, a poor brahmana worshiped Lord Siva to get the best benediction, hoping for the solution to all his problems. Lord Siva is known as midhushtama, the best of the benedictors, and many materialistic people approach him to fulfill their desires. But for this brahmana, Lord Siva granted the best benediction for his spiritual life. He directed the brahmana to see Sanatana Goswami, a direct disciple and close associate of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, for only Sanatana could award the best benediction.

When the brahmana approached Sanatana Goswami, he noticed that Sanatana had a touchstone that he kept with the garbage. This powerful gem could turn iron into gold simply by contact. Upon the brahmana's request, Sanatana gave him the touchstone, which seemed like the greatest blessing to the brahmana, who went away gratified by the assurance of immense financial success.

As the brahmana left Sanatana's company, however, a doubt nagged his mind: If the touchstone were truly the greatest benediction, then why did Sanatana Goswami keep it with the garbage, as if it had no value at all? Surely, he realized, this could not be what he was seeking; Sanatana Goswami must have an even greater treasure.

The brahmana returned to Sanatana Goswami and inquired, "Sir, if this is the best benediction, why did you keep it with the garbage?"

Sanatana Goswami replied that the touchstone was not the best benediction.

"But," Sanatana asked, "are you prepared to take the best benediction from me?"

The brahmana eagerly assented, and Sanatana then told him to throw the touchstone into the nearby Yamuna River.

When the brahmana returned, Sanatana Goswami initiated him with the Hare Krishna maha-mantra: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. By Lord Siva's mercy, the brahmana achieved the best benediction of all: the chanting of the holy names of the Lord in the association of a pure devotee.

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: Meat Makes The Rich Ill And The Poor Hungry

Click here to check out the whole Viva! guide to meat-eating and global hunger

by Jeremy Rifkin

When representatives meet at the World Food Summit they supposedly focus on how to get food into the mouths of nearly one billion people who are currently undernourished. However, at all the dinners they attend you can expect to see the consumption of large quantities of meat. And herein lies the contradiction.

People go hungry because much of arable land is used to grow feed grain for animals rather than people. In the US, 157 million tons of cereals, legumes and vegetable protein – all suitable for human consumption – is fed to livestock to produce just 28 million tons of animal protein in the form of meat.

In developing countries, using land to create an artificial food chain has resulted in misery for hundreds of millions of people. An acre of cereal produces five times more protein than an acre used for meat production; legumes such as beans, peas and lentils can produce 10 times more protein and, in the case of soya, 30 times more.

Global corporations which supply the seeds, chemicals and cattle and which control the slaughterhouses, marketing and distribution of beef, eagerly promote grain-fed livestock. They equate it with a country's prestige and climbing the "protein ladder" becomes the mark of success.

Enlarging their meat supply is the first step for all developing countries. They start with chicken and egg production and, as their economies grow, climb the protein ladder to pork, milk, and dairy products, then to grass-fed beef and finally to grain-fed beef. Encouraging this process advances the interests of agribusinesses and two-thirds of the grain exported from the USA goes to feed livestock. The process really got underway when "green revolution" technology produced grain surpluses in the 1970s. The UN's Food and Agricultural Organisation encouraged it and the USA government linked its food aid programme to the producing of feed grain and gave low-interest loans to establish grain-fed poultry operations. Many nations have attempted to remain high on the protein ladder long after the grain surpluses disappeared.

Human consequences of the shift from food to feed were dramatically illustrated during the Ethiopian famine in 1984. While people starved, Ethiopia was growing linseed cake, cottonseed cake and rapeseed meal for European livestock. Millions of acres of land in the developing world are used for this purpose. Tragically, 80 per cent of the world's hungry children live in countries with food surpluses which are fed to animals for consumption by the affluent.

The irony is that millions of consumers in the first world are dying from diseases of affluence such as heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and cancer, brought on by eating animal products, while the world's poor are dying from diseases of poverty. We are long overdue for a global discussion on how to promote a diversified, high-protein, vegetarian diet for the human race.

Jeremy Rifkin is the author of Beyond Beef: The Rise and Fall of the Cattle Culture (Plume, 1992), and The Biotech Century (Victor Gollancz,1998). He is also the president of the Foundation on Economic Trends in Washington DC, USA.
