Sita-pati dasa, AU: Amala Kirtan in Australia in July

The Kirtan Australia crew are currently organising the details of Amala Kirtan's visit to Australia in July, 2010. His tickets are booked and paid for, so it's *on*. It's one week, so it will be Canberra + one other city. More details to follow.

Today Dandavats.com carried an article about the recent Brazilian 24 hour kirtan festival [article]. It has mention of Amala Kirtan:

The Nova Gokula community was especially pleased to welcome home one of their own gurukula devotees and hero of many in the international kirtana circuit: Amala Kirtana dasa. Amala Kirtana Prabhu, although born and raised in Brazil, captured the hearts of all in attendance with his dynamic Bengali-style melodies. Amala Kirtana Prabhu presently lives in Dallas and is active in chanting Hare Krsna there, much to the devotees' delight.

Sita-pati dasa, AU: Bhagavad-gita 2.2

A brief thought for today on Bhagavad-gita 2.2:

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Arjuna, how have these impurities come upon you? They are not at all befitting a man who knows the value of life. They lead not to higher planets but to infamy.

- Bhagavad-gita 2.2

The Sanskrit for this verse is very nice:

sri-bhagavan uvaca
kutas tva kasmalam idam
vishame samupasthitam
anarya-jushtam asvargyam
akirti-karam arjuna

Krishna delivers a Mortal Kombat combo repartee to Arjuna's presentation in the first chapter. The relevant part: anarya-jushtam asvargyam
akirti-karam
.

Three terms, each begins with a, each ends with am. They roll off the tongue with both alliteration and rhyme. It's a poetical tour de force, as well as a damning condemnation:

anarya-jushtam - "worthy of the non-Aryans", in German the "untermenschen". The original Aryan master race were focused on metaphysical reality beyond the superficialities of the phenomenal world. Their gaze was focused on a future beyond this life.

asvargyam - "leading not to the heavenly planets" - part of that focus was on the destination in the next life. The Nordic "See you in Valhalla" parting before going into battle conveys the mood - our actions in this life might lead us to death, but they will carry us through it to a glorious destination beyond.

akirti-karam - "the cause of infamy". From kirti "fame", we get kirtan "glorification". Even if you aren't killed, or you don't worry about your destination in the next life, in this life you are not going to get the glory this way.

All three of these appeal to either Arjuna's innate psychology or else his cultural conditioning. It's a powerful combination, psychologically and linguistically.

Ekendra dasa, AU: The Notion of Free Speech and How I Try to Tolerate It

Lately it seems as if this blog has attracted comments from some folks with some far out views. I'm not surprised as this has been a consistent thread in my life (offline and online) for the last 20 years at least.

I'm not going to delete them in the interest of letting people say what they want. I do want to point out that while the mostly anonymous posters are entitled to their views, they do not usually reflect the views of Ekendra Dasa who maintains this blog.

But the banter I engaged in with the person who accused me of being a reptilian cannibal who shapeshifted into human form is all mine :) !

Any other people who took acid 20 years ago and never quite came in for a landing are welcome to post so long as they can manage something coherent and don't mind me being amused and responding with whatever humor I feel like at the time.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'A Garland For Nitya-siddha' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Prabhupada Smaranam

The person on the left comes from a mleccha and yavana background. Both his Italian-American father and his Irish-American mother were meat eaters and liquor drinkers and trained their son to be the same. The son then added aberrations of his own in illicit sex and taking of recreational drugs. The person on the right in the picture is a nitya-siddha pure devotee of Krishna who never committed any sinful activities in his lifetime. Yet the pure devotee is humbly accepting a garland of flowers from the person of the mleccha-yavana background. And why is that? Because he has accepted him as a disciple, as a spiritual son via hari-nama initiation. He no longer considers that the young man is a mleccha-yavana but he has told him he is a sincere devotee of the Lord and that Krishna will give him auspicious advancement. The young man is a house-holder but he is a temple president and has a full time job as a welfare officer for which all his offerings goes to the temple treasury. Prabhupada considers the young man qualified because he is hard working in the preaching mission and he follows the regulated principles. Prabhupada has made him a brahmana. In so doing he quoted Sanatana Gosvami's verse, that as iron can be changed to gold by touching it with a cintamani stone, so a low class man can become a brahmana by chanting the holy names of Krishna, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare. The young man has faith that he has been cleansed and that he has been accepted as a son in spiritual parampara. The young man is aware that he is lacking in many finer qualifications of a Vedic brahmana but he has sincere faith in his spiritual master and that makes him very happy.

1.

I know what Krishna
looks like. I cannot
be tricked by an illusion
or imitation of God.

But when I see His arcya-vigraha
or hear of Him in the scripture,
my body does not transform
with ecstatic emotions.

This is a sad thing. I
chant His holy names as
a routine habit.

How can you know but not
know the glory? It is
due to offenses known
as aparadhas. In
different ways you neglect
or insult the Almighty.

I'm aware of these aparadhas
and make some effort to
avoid them, but not enough.
I am still allured by illusions
of this world. I still
fail to taste the alternative of
sweetness.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Trying to Escape' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Free write

How crazy this man is being held aloft over the city by a big bunch of balloons! What does he want to accomplish by it? He has put his life in a very precarious condition. He could slip from the grip on the balloons or they could carry him up into the skies or crash into the roof tops. He has nothing to gain except becoming famous for doing a zany aeronautic trick, or by killing himself in the process. He is not adding to the knowledge of science or flying or anything usable.

The Srimad-Bhagavatam states that karmis waste their time in the day by working hard and at night by sex and sleep. Apparently they find time for other time wasters like flying over a city in a balloon.

Another view of this picture reveals that the city is decrepit, grimy and ugly. The man may be trying to escape. But there is little chance he can escape to a more favorable environment by riding on balloons. It is like the Greek myth of Icarus who tried to fly to the sun on wings of wax. As the wax wings melted when Icarus got too near the sun, this man's balloons will pop as he encounters rough weather or gets tangled in trees or mountains. There is no escape from the material world by flimsy man made vehicles. The body is not meant to survive a trip to another world. Only by giving up the body and transmigrating by the law of karma can one escape living in a decrepit world and enter a heavenly world in a heavenly body.

H.H. Sivarama Swami: Purushottama month doesn't come every year

The vaishnava calendar works with lunar months.Since the lunar month is 29.53 days, the lunar year is 12 x 29.53 or 354.36 days, while the solar year is 365.26 days. Thus after one solar year, the lunar calendar will be almost 11 days out of synchronization with the solar year. So approximately every 33 months an extra lunar month is added. This is done in that month where the sun and the moon simultaneously enter the same zodiacal sign. This is Purushottama Month.

Ekendra dasa, AU: Lewd Experience on the Beach

To whom it may concern:

Today my wife took our two small children to the beach near Byron Bay. Upon return, she reported to me her unsavory experience of having to witness two undressed men walk past her and the kids on the beach as well as another barely dressed man. According to her, one of these men engaged in lewd behavior in plain sight of my family. This all happened within the span of 1/2 an hour.

I recognize that the Byron Shire has designated an area of beach near Tyagarah as clothing optional. As you can see on the enclosed map, my family was about one kilometer away from that area.

Are signs clearly posted that designate the boundaries of the nudist area? I would prefer not to have to investigate this myself.

If there are no signs posted then shouldn't there be?

My children did not need to be exposed to this type of vulgarity. I do feel that it lies within the responsibility of whomever manages this tract of beach area to enforce the boundaries in such a way that effectively prevents this from happening. I did not particularly enjoy fielding the stream of questions from my five year old on the matter.

I have already tried to bring this issue up with the Byron Shire via telephone and they claimed that since this was Crown land it was out of their jurisdiction. I would appreciate some response from your department so that I don't have to spend the time and effort generating interest in this matter with local media and community groups.

Regards,
...............
