Radha Priya dd, Austin, TX, USA: Solace Within the Storm

Life in the material world is not easy to say the least. For the aspiring spiritualist it is especially difficult as our environment here is such where nearly every aspect of modern culture is encouraging us to engage in irreligious activities. Srila Prabhupada rightly declared the plight of a neophyte devotee (...)

You are not meant to suffer. So there's no need to suffer a moment longer in this material existence. All you have to do is fix yourself solidly in Krishna consciousness seeing everything as His arrangement and offering everything to Him in all times, places, and circumstances. Why be miserable when you can taste unlimited bliss at every minute? This...

ISKCON News.com: American Muslims Increasingly Turn to Home Schooling

By Tara Bahrampour for The Washington Post on 21 Feb 2010

On a chilly afternoon in western Loudoun County in Washington State, a group of children used tweezers to extract rodent bones from a regurgitated owl pellet. A boy built a Lego launcher. A girl practiced her penmanship. On the wall, placards read, "I fast in Ramadan," "I pay zakat" and "I will go on hajj."

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'In France' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

This picture was taken in the summer of 1974 in France. The devotee dressed in white on the far left is Bhagavan das, who was GBC in charge of France. The man on the far right is a real-estate agent. Bhagavan had taken Prabhupada on a drive from Paris to the country side, to look at the castle for possible purchase and use as a temple. Prabhupada (with a bouquet of pink roses in his hand) is looking up admiringly at the architecture of the building. He has a pleased expression on his face as if thinking, “this would make a nice residence for Radha Krishna and Their devotees.” This was a period when Bhagavan was buying up mansions and castles in different European countries. Some of them turned out to be “white elephants”, too expensive to maintain, and not enough devotees to live in them. Others, like Radhadesh in Belgium turned out to be successes and are thriving communities even today.

Once when being driven through Paris, Prabhupada noted the great museum Le Louvre and said, “It’s perfection would be to be used as a temple for Krishna.” He always looked at beautiful buildings with that in mind. Sometimes he asked the owners to give us the building free because we were using it for such an important purpose. Only George Harrison responded by donating the handsome Bhaktivedanta Manor as a gift. Prabhupada inherited the legacy of “yukta-vairagya” or using material things in Krishna’s service as a form of higher renunciation, from his spiritual master Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, and from Srila Rupa Goswami. A Vaisnava can use splendid buildings, opulent vehicles and so on as long as he does not use them for his own sense gratification but for the service and glorification of the Supreme Lord. Srila Prabhupada was prepared to utilize the riches of the whole world in that spirit, as long as he did not create too much anxiety.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: free sex and womens' lonely suffering

...if young boys and young girls mix freely and have sex, and as soon as she is pregnant, you go away, let her suffer, no responsibility. The poor girl, long before, father, mother divorce--no protector. And as soon as she selects somebody husband, and as soon as pregnancy, he goes away. And old age--there is no family, no son. Ninety-nine percent the woman class live like that. How hopelessly the old ladies are sitting down--only one cat, one dog, one television.

Gaura Vani, USA: Rutgers University Loves Kirtan

Gaura Vani leads the kirtan at Rutgers University Gaura Vani leading kirtan with the Mayapuris, Acyuta Gopi and Kevin Jones on Bass

Acyuta Gopi leads kirtan at Rutgers University Enjoying the chanting.

Last week was our second visit to Rutgers University. We were invited by Aksh Sharma, one of the facilitators of the Bhakti Club, and a good friend of ours. Over 220 students filled a large hall as Gaura Vani, The Mayapuris and Acyuta Gopi started the night with stories of the Ramayan and beautiful chants.

Sri Rama Jai Rama... Visvambhar from The Mayapuris leads one of the final kirtans.

Towards the end of the evening Gaura Vani invited Gopika, a student from Rutgers and a facilitator of the Bhakti Club, to sing Hare Krishna while the Mayapuris got the crowd off their feet and dancing. What ensued can be described with a thousand words, or this one short video.

The Mayapuris perform their signature Mridanga dance. Watching the Mridanga Dance

The crowd in rounds Everyone likes kirtan.

Daily Targum - Gaura Vani ArticleWe are all excited to be going back to Rutgers University in October of this year. The student newspaper, The Daily Targum, also covered the night with an article posted here.

EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE

Students were able to tour the world through meditation and cultural celebrations on campus at the Busch Campus Center with the help of the University’s Bhatki Yoga Club.
More than 220 people experienced a night dedicated to musical meditation, cultural singing and dancing Thursday, as they listened to world-famous, Indian-style kirtan bands As Kindred Spirits and Mayapuris while performing Bhakti yoga.
“Kirtan is the sound of the soul singing. Its purpose is to reunite with the divine through the medium of mantra or sacred sounds and to clean the heart to reawaken our true identity. It helps us realize who we are really,” said Gaura Vani, leader of As Kindred Spirits.
Yoga in the western world is known typically as a physical workout leading to flexibility and muscle tone. But Bhakti yoga achieves a higher-level, inner awareness connection through the tradition of singing sacred sounds known as kirtan, according to the club’s Web site.

Kripamoya dasa, UK: GBC clarification statement

By happy coincidence, my theme of spiritual movements, self-absorbed leaders, reluctant leaders and would-be leaders continues today with this piece sent out by ISKCON’s governing body. The GBC has rightly seen fit to clarify its position with regards to repeated statements made by Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja of the Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti.

I recommend all my regular readers to download the document and give it their attention for a few minutes, then pass it on to anyone who may be interested in such matters.

Lecture on Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 8, Chapter 22, Text 2 by Prahladananda Swami.

TRANSLATION

Since Your Lordship is indirectly the greatest well-wisher of us demons, You act for our best welfare by posing as if our enemy. Because demons like us always aspire for a position of false prestige, by chastising us You give us the eyes by which to see the right path.

Bali Mahārāja said: O best Personality of Godhead, most worshipable for all the demigods, if You think that my promise has become false, I shall certainly rectify matters to make it truthful. I cannot allow my promise to be false. Please, therefore, place Your third lotus footstep on my head.

PURPORT

Bali Mahārāja considered the Supreme Personality of Godhead a better friend to the demons than to the demigods. In the material world, the more one gets material possessions, the more he becomes blind to spiritual life. The demigods are devotees of the Lord for the sake of material possessions, but although the demons apparently do not have the Supreme Personality of Godhead on their side, He always acts as their well-wisher by depriving them of their positions of false prestige. By false prestige one is misguided, so the Supreme Lord takes away their position of false prestige as a special favor.

PURPORT

Bali Mahārāja could understand the pretense of Lord Vāmanadeva, who had taken the side of the demigods and come before him as a beggar. Although the Lord's purpose was to cheat him, Bali Mahārāja took pleasure in understanding how the Lord will cheat His devotee to glorify the devotee's position. It is said that God is good, and this is a fact. Whether He cheats or rewards, He is always good. Bali Mahārāja therefore addressed Him as Uttamaśloka. "Your Lordship," he said, "You are always praised with the best of selected verses. On behalf of the demigods, You disguised Yourself to cheat me, saying that You wanted only three paces of land, but later You expanded Your body to such an extent that with two footsteps You covered the entire universe. Because You were working on behalf of Your devotees, You do not regard this as cheating. Never mind. I cannot be considered a devotee. Nonetheless, because although You are the husband of the goddess of fortune You have come to me to beg, I must satisfy You to the best of my ability. So please do not think that I wanted to cheat You; I must fulfill my promise. I still have my body. When I place my body for Your satisfaction, please put Your third step on my head." Since the Lord had covered the entire universe with two steps, one might ask how Bali Mahārāja's head could be sufficient for His third step? Bali Mahārāja, however, thought that the possessor of wealth must be greater than the possession. Therefore although the Lord had taken all his possessions, the head of Bali Mahārāja, the possessor, would provide adequate place for the Lord's third step.

PURPORT

Kaunteya das, Mayapura: The Art of Talking Taking Help from Art

It seems that the Catholic leadership isn't too happy with the quality of the homilies (lectures, sermons) being offered in their churches.

Bishop Mariano Crociata, Secretary General of the Italian Bishops' Conference, recently created a stir by criticizing the shoddy quality of many Sunday sermons. "Speaking at a conference . . . he called many of the homilies given from the pulpit every Sunday insipid 'mush,' almost an 'inedible dish,' and in any case 'hardly nourishing.'"

But there is help at hand in their rich artistic tradition, explains Sergio Magister in his article "How to Paint a Homily by the Rules of Art."

As cardinal, Joseph Ratzinger quipped: "The miracle of the Church is that it survives millions of terrible homilies every Sunday."

As pope, Ratzinger, "has made it abundantly clear that he thinks one of the primary duties of the Church is to elevate the quality of the homilies." And "there is one particular way to follow up on this intention of Benedict XVI. And it is the way of sacred art. Fortified by the art that adorns countless churches all over the world, homilies could be a better introduction to the sacred mysteries than words alone."

The article introduces "three splendid volumes" by Timothy Verdon - art historian, priest and professor at Stanford University - in which he comments on scriptural texts "using masterpieces of Christian art chosen in conjunction with the Gospel of the day."

Here you can find an extract from the presentation of the latest volume, "The artistic road to the sacred mysteries" by Prof. Massimo Naro:

A few excerpts (I assume your "automatic translation" with Bhagavata tradition, narrations and imagery):

"Reading the account of the creation of the world and of man in Genesis, or evoking the lives of the patriarchs of Israel, or narrating the miracles performed by Jesus and proclaiming the memory of his Passover in a church, for example, like the cathedral of Monreale, the inside of which is completely covered with mosaics illustrating the Bible, means precisely encountering a grandiose commentary on the 'stories of God,' which envelops the believer from every side, as he is present there to listen to but also look at the gospel proclamation."

"Christian art has been for centuries . . . an integral factor of ecclesial tradition and Christian life."

"In reality, the art that deals with the self-revelation of God is a sort of spiritual exegesis, capable of making us see the Lord, and even more, of making us see ourselves with the Lord, next to him."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I find the idea of using art as a support for lecturing excellent and extremely relevant, especially for ISKCON because, 1. We lecture a lot; 2. Srila Prabhupada empathically established a lively artistic tradition.

I humbly dedicate this entry to Gopal Bhatta Prabhu, modern-day ISKCON Maecenas, lover and patron of the Vaisnava Arts.

Hanuman das, Croatia: Real reason for new age preaching

You are my dearest friends. Japa Group: Proper Pronounciation Is Important

Today I read that we should pronounce the word "Rama" as it is spelt and not "Ram". This got me thinking about how important it is to clearly repeat the words of the Hare Krsna mantra. Then I started to chant Rama properly and it had the effect of making me concentrate alot more on the sound and I could really relish the Holy names and absorb myself more and more.

Please try this, to pronounce each word very carefully and to hear with great concentration.
