Haridwar was fully enlightened with greatly exalted saintly persons who came for Mahakumbha Snana. Many many Sampraday Mahamandaleshwar is there in Kumbha Mela, ISKCON Mahamandaleshwar HH Lokanatha Swami followed by several hundreds of devotees took bath at Har-Ki-Paudi, Brhma kunda.

“In this regard Srila Prabhupada’s conversations with the devotees and Guest:
Prabhupäda: Some sädhu went up there.(?)
Dr. Patel: No, no. I mean Janeñu abhijïeñu. Abhijïaù.
Prabhupäda: Abhijïeñu. Abhijïaù means those who are in knowledge. Abhijïäta.
Dr. Patel: That means sat-saìga. Instead of doing sat-saìga, people go to Kumbha Mela... (laughs)
Prabhupäda: No. Kumbha Mela is sat-saìga. If you go to Kumbha Mela to find out a man of knowledge, then your Kumbha Mela is right. Otherwise, yad-buddhiù çalile sa eva go-kharaù [SB 10.84.13]. If one thinks that this çalila, the water, to take bath in the water, is Kumbha Mela, he is a go-kharaù. But the real..., that "Now there are assembly of so many saintly persons. Let me take advantage of their knowledge." Then he is intelligent. [break] ...of highly learned saintly persons.”

Lathmar Holi in Nandagram
88 fotosOn 24th february 2010 -
At Nandagram, the 'latthmaar holi' is also famous like Varsana. The men of Varsana known as 'gops' raid Nandagram and try to mark their victory over the temple of Nanda Bhaban by furling flag over it while the women of Nandagram try to fend them off with long bamboo sticks. The men are well padded because they cannot retaliate to the women and can only try to keep them off by sprinkling colored water on them. In case they get trapped, they are dressed as a lady in a sari and cosmetics are applied and they are made to dance like a lady. It is said that even Lord Krishna was made to dance like this by the 'gops' of Barsana. Holi songs known as 'Hori' are sung by the men and women and are mostly based on the dialogues exchanged between Krishna and Radhika.
It is said that the tradition of playing colors on Holi originated from the ‘leela’ of Radha and Krishna. As Krishna was always jealous of Radha's fair complexion, he teasingly colored Radha's face with color. In a mischievous mood, Radha also ran behind him badly annoyed and shouting. This was how the tradition of applying color came in being and is religiously followed till date. People of Mathura and Vridavan associate Holi with the divine love of Krishna and Radha.

55 lakh people visited Maha Kumbh mela on Mahashivratri
67 fotosHaridwar, Feb 12 – Nearly 55 lakh pilgrims, including saints of various sects, and tourists participated in the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela Friday on the occasion of Mahashivratri, mela authorities said.
Anand Vardhan, officer in charge of the Mela, while giving the figure of 55 lakh, clarified that all the people did not converge at Haridwar, but were spread across four districts of Uttarakhand.
‘The figure of 55 lakh should not be confused with the total number of people who took the holy dip in the revered Ganga at Haridwar,’ he said.
‘The strength of 55 lakh comprises all kinds of devotees, onlookers and tourists, who converged at the Mela area – that is spread across 130 sq km spanning Haridwar, Dehradun, Pauri and Tehri Garhwal districts,’ Vardhan told IANS.
Hundreds of Naga sadhus and other ascetics bathed in the Ganga river on the first Shahi Snan held on the occasion of Mahashivratri.
Of the seven Akhadas that were to participate in the Shahi Snan, the Juna Akhada was the first to undertake the royal bath and was followed by the Agni and the Avahan Akhadas.
Juna Akhada, regarded as the most significant, arrived in a long procession that included the largest batch of Naga sadhus, who literally raced on the sandy banks to plunge themselves into the waters.
A small group of foreigners, including men and women of varied age-groups, were also members of the Juna Akhada and they too participated in the royal bath.
The Shai Snan went on till 5.30 p.m., after which other devotees were allowed to take a dip in the river.
A number of ministers and politicians too bathed on the occasion.
Prominent among them were Arunanchal Pradesh Home Minister Tako Dabi, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, Assam’s former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.
A thrilled Dabi later told reporters, ‘It’s just amazing… It appears the Maha Kumbh has transformed the holy city of Haridwar into a small world.’
Airing similar sentiments, Assam’s former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta told reporters, ‘Such an event immensely helps revive the traditional values that are fading away with the passage of time.’

( when there is Kumbha Mela in Haridwar as the Vaisnavas had some bad experience with the Shivites, so they do a separate one here in Vrindavan. Haridwar means the gate of God. Vrindavan is his home!!! )
Kumbha (Kumbha means pot) Mela is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage that takes place at the following four locations of India
Prayag (near the city of Allahabad, in the state of Uttar Pradesh) at the confluence of three rivers Ganga (Ganges), Yamuna and Saraswati
Haridwar (in the state of Uttar Pradesh) where the river Ganga enters the plains from Himalayas
Ujjain (in Madhya Pradesh), on the banks of Ksipra river, and
Nasik (in Maharashtra) on the banks of Godavari river.
The pilgrimage occurs four times every twelve years, once at each of the four locations. Each twelve-year cycle includes the Maha (great) Kumbha Mela at Prayag, attended by millions of people, making it the largest pilgrimage gathering around the world.
The observance of Kumbha Mela is based upon the following story : thousands of years ago, perhaps in the Vedic period, gods and demons made a temporary agreement to work together in obtaining amrita (the nectar of immortality) from the Milky Ocean, and to share this equally. However, when the Kumbha (pot) containing the amrita appeared, the demons ran away with the pot and were chased by the gods. For twelve days and twelve nights (equivalent to twelve human years) the gods and demons fought in the sky for the possession of this pot of amrita. It is said that during the battle, drops of amrita fell on to four places : Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. Thus, Kumbha mela is observed at these four locations where the nectar fell.
Kumbha Mela is attended by millions of people on a single day. A ritual bath at a predetermined time and place is the major event of this festival. Other activities include religious discussions, devotional singing, mass feeding of holy men/women and the poor, and religious assemblies where doctrines are debated and standardized. Kumbha Mela (especially the Maha Kumbha Mela) is the most sacred of all the Hindu pilgrimages. Thousands of holy men/women (monks, saints, sadhus) grace the occasion by their presence. The suspiciousness of Kumbha Mela is in part attributed to the gathering of thousands of holy men/women at one place on earth
According to astrologers, the 'Kumbh Fair' takes place when the planet Jupiter enters Aquarius and the Sun enters Aries.

Vrindavan ( Bilvavana ) Belvan/Srivana Festival :
18 fotosIt was at Bilvavana that Balaräma and Krsna ate ripe bael fruits [bilva is another name for bael]. According to the Ädi-varäha Purana, Bilvavana is worshiped by all the demigods, and whoever visits it will also be worshiped in Brahmaloka. It is said that by bathing at Krsna-kunda, situated at Bilvavana, a person can become free of vice. Previously, the Yamunä flowed in a single stream and Mänasa-sarovara was located on the other side of the river. Now, however, the Yamunä has divided herself into two and later meets again at another point, thus creating a circle around Mänasa-sarovara. Krsna performed many picnic pastimes in this area.
Bilvavana forest is 5 meters in circumference and is also known as Srivana because Lakshmidevi performed austerities here. Therefore the temple in Bilvavana has a three-foot Deity of Lakshmi. She is beautiful, with folded hands, praying to one day attain the position of a gopi in order to participate in Krsna's rasa dance; She had been told that she could not participate in the rasa dance in any other form than a Vraja-gopi.
There is a temple here with a three foot high beautiful Deity of Lakshmi with her hands folded. Lakshmi the Goddess of fortune, being desirous of attaining the position of a gopi, so She would be able to participate in the rasa dance, stays in the Bilvavana forest performing austerities. She wanted to be able to associate with Krishna. Krishna told Lakshmi devi it was not possible for her to be admitted into the rasa lila pastimes in Her present condition and status, and then she would have to be born as a gopi in Braja.
Why Lakshmi Devi doing Austerity in Belbon.... ( Here Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Venkata Bhatta Conversation )
Sri Caitanya Mahäprabhu told the Bhattäcärya, “Your worshipable goddess of fortune, Lakshmi, always remains on the chest of Näräyana, and she is certainly the most chaste woman in the creation.
“However, my Lord is Lord Sri Krishna, a cowherd boy who is engaged in tending cows. Why is it that Lakshmi, being such a chaste wife, wants to associate with My Lord?
“Just to associate with Krishna, Lakñmé abandoned all transcendental happiness in Vaikuëöha and for a long time accepted vows and regulative principles and performed unlimited austerities.”
Veìkaöa Bhatta then said, “Lord Krishnaa and Lord Näräyaëa are one and the same, but the pastimes of Krishnaa are more relishable due to their sportive nature.
“Since Krishna and Näräyana are the same personality, Lakshmi’s association with Krishna does not break her vow of chastity. Rather, it was in great fun that the goddess of fortune wanted to associate with Lord Kristta.”
Veìkaöa Bhaööa continued, “‘According to transcendental realization, there is no difference between the forms of Näräyana and Krishna. Yet in Krishna there is a special transcendental attraction due to the conjugal mellow, and consequently He surpasses Näräyaëa. This is the conclusion of transcendental mellows.’
“The goddess of fortune considered that her vow of chastity would not be damaged by her relationship with Krishna. Rather, by associating with Krishna she could enjoy the benefit of the räsa dance.”
Veìkaöa Bhatta further explained, “Mother Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune, is also an enjoyer of transcendental bliss; therefore if she wanted to enjoy herself with Krishna, what fault is there? Why are You joking so about this?”
Lord Caitanya Mahäprabhu replied, “I know that there is no fault on the part of the goddess of fortune, but still she could not enter into the räsa dance. We hear this from the revealed scriptures.
“But can you tell Me why the goddess of fortune, Lakñmé, could not enter the räsa dance? The authorities of Vedic knowledge could enter the dance and associate with Kåñëa.
Having been asked by Caitanya Mahäprabhu why the goddess of fortune could not enter into the räsa dance whereas the authorities on Vedic knowledge could, Veìkaöa Bhaööa replied, “I cannot enter into the mysteries of this behavior.”
Veìkaöa Bhaööa then said, “I am an ordinary human being. Since my intelligence is very limited and I am easily agitated, my mind cannot enter within the deep ocean of the pastimes of the Lord.
“You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna Himself. You know the purport of Your activities, and the person whom You enlighten can also understand Your pastimes.”
The Lord replied, “Lord Krishna has a special characteristic: He attracts everyone’s heart by the mellow of His personal conjugal love.
“By following in the footsteps of the inhabitants of the planet known as Vrajaloka or Goloka Våndävana, one can attain the shelter of the lotus feet of Çré Krishna. However, in that planet the inhabitants do not know that Lord Kåñëa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
“There someone may accept Him as a son and sometimes bind Him to a grinding mortar. Someone else may accept Him as an intimate friend and, attaining victory over Him, playfully mount His shoulders.
“The inhabitants of Vrajabhümi know Krishna as the son of Mahäräja Nanda, the King of Vrajabhümi, and they consider that they can have no relationship with the Lord in the rasa of opulence.
“One who worships the Lord by following in the footsteps of the inhabitants of Vrajabhümi attains Him in the transcendental planet of Vraja, where He is known as the son of Mahäräja Nanda.”
“The authorities in the Vedic literature who are known as the çruti-gaëas worshiped Lord Kåñëa in the ecstasy of the gopés and followed in their footsteps.
“The personified authorities on the Vedic hymns acquired bodies like those of the gopés and took birth in Vrajabhümi. In those bodies they were allowed to enter into the Lord’s räsa-lélä dance.
“Lord Kåñëa belongs to the cowherd community, and the gopés are the dearmost lovers of Kåñëa. Although the wives of the denizens of the heavenly planets are most opulent within the material world, neither they nor any other women in the material universe can acquire Krishna’s association.
“The goddess of fortune, Lakñmé, wanted to enjoy Kåñëa and at the same time retain her spiritual body in the form of Lakñmé. However, she did not follow in the footsteps of the gopés in her worship of Krishna.
“Vyäsadeva, the supreme authority on Vedic literature, composed the verse beginning ‘näyaà sukhäpo bhagavän’ because no one can enter into the räsa-lélä dance in any body other than that of a gopé.”
Before this explanation was given by Sri Caitanya Mahäprabhu, Veìkaöa Bhaööa thought that Çré Näräyaëa was the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Thinking in this way, Venkata Bhatta believed that worship of Näräyana was the supreme form of worship, superior to all other processes of devotional service, for it was followed by the Çré Vaiñëava disciples of Rämänujäcärya.
Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu had understood this misconception of Veìkaöa Bhatta’s, and to correct it the Lord talked so much in a joking way.
The Lord then continued, “My dear Venkata Bhatta, please do not continue doubting. Lord Kåñëa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and this is the conclusion of the Vedic literatures.
“Lord Näräyana, the opulent form of Krishna, attracts the minds of the goddess of fortune and her followers.
“Because Krishna has four extraordinary qualities not possessed by Lord Näräyaëa, the goddess of fortune, Lakñmé, always desires His company.
“You have recited the çloka beginning with ‘siddhäntatas tv abhede ’pi.’ That very verse is evidence that Kåñëa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
“The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, attracts the mind of the goddess of fortune, but Lord Näräyana cannot attract the minds of the gopés. This proves the superexcellence of Krishna.
“To say nothing of Lord Näräyana personally, Lord Krishna Himself appeared as Näräyaëa just to play a joke on the gopés.
“Although Krishna assumed the four-armed form of Näräyaëa, He could not attract the serious attention of the gopés in ecstatic love.
In this way Lord Sri Caitanya Mahäprabhu deflated the pride of Veìkaöa Bhaööa, but just to make him happy again, He spoke as follows.
The Lord pacified Veìkaöa Bhatta by saying, “Actually whatever I have said is by way of jest. Now you can hear from Me the conclusion of the çästras, in which every Vaiñëava devotee has firm faith.
“There is no difference between Lord Krishna and Lord Näräyaëa, for They are of the same form. Similarly, there is no difference between the gopés and the goddess of fortune, for they also are of the same form.
“The goddess of fortune enjoys the association of Krishna through the gopés. One should not differentiate between the forms of the Lord, for such a conception is offensive.
“There is no difference between the transcendental forms of the Lord. Different forms are manifested due to different attachments of different devotees. Actually the Lord is one, but He appears in different forms just to satisfy His devotees.
Venkata Bhatta then said, “I am an ordinary fallen living entity, but You are Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself.
“The transcendental pastimes of the Lord are unfathomable, and I do not know anything about them. Whatever You say I accept as the truth.
“I have been engaged in the service of Laksmi-Näräyana, and it is due to Their mercy that I have been able to see Your lotus feet.

Srila Prabhupada Book Distribution Marathon - 2009
Tomorrow The Book Distribution - 2009 will finished.
The face of the typical book distributor has changed since the early days of ISKCON. The face of a young bhramacari or bhramacarini in the airport or street intersection is changing to a grhastas with a regular job, home, and kids in school. These Weekend Warriors are manning tables in shopping malls with wife and children begging the condition souls to take home the nectar of the spiritual world in the form of Srila Prabhupada’s books.
Distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books is the responsibility of every follower of His Divine Grace.

Gita Jayanti, the advent of Bhagavad gita. Satuday, November 28th.
The best way to observe Gita Jayanti is to study the Gita and to distribute it. For this event, many temples buy large quantities of Bhagavad-gitas from the BBT to sell to their congregation members at wholesale. These members may then enjoy personally distributing them to friends, family and co-workers. Others “sponsor” Gitas, paying for them in advance so that other devotees can distribute them to the public on their behalf.
