ISKCON Melbourne, AU: The Glories of Purushottam Month

As we laboured in the garden to prepare the temple for Preeti Rupini's wedding last Saturday, Michael shared a secret behind his enthusiasm for his service.

radhakrishna.jpg

Janananda Maharaja had reminded Michael that - until May 14th.- we are in the month of Purushottama:

'This Purushottama month is more glorious than all other months, including Kartik month. The glories of all other months is not even equal to one sixteenth of the glories of Purushottama month. The merit of a person who takes a holy bath even once in this month is equal to the merit of taking bath in the Ganges for twelve thousand years...If you will take a holy bath, give in charity and chant the holy name of Krishna during this month, all your miseries will go away. You will attain all kinds of perfection...' (ISKCON Desire Tree)

The best feature is that even aparadhas can be pardoned if we do devotional practice in this month.

Because Michael wants everyone to enjoy the bliss of offering devotional service to Krishna in His special month, I am passing his secret on to you. Enjoy!

¡Goce!

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Indefatiguable death

When we approach some gentleman and request him to become a reader of "Back to Godhead," sometimes we are replied with the words "NO TIME." They say that they are too busy in earning money for maintaining the body and soul together. But when we ask them what do they mean by the 'Soul,' they have nothing to reply.

Dr. Meghnath Saga, a great scientist, was busily going to a meeting of planning Commission. Unfortunately while going in his car on the road he died and could not ask Death to wait because he had no time at that moment.

Dr. Ansari, the great Congress leader, while dying in a moving train, on his way to home, said that he was himself a medical man and almost all his family men were so, but Death is so cruel that he was dying without any medical treatment.

Therefore, Death has been described in the Bhagwat as the indefatigable. Death is awaiting everyone although everybody thinks that he may not die. There is life after death. The busy man should try to know this also as to whither he is going. This life is but a spot in his longest sojourn and a sane person should not be busy with a spot only. Nobody says that the body should not be maintained—but everybody should know from "Bhagwat Geeta," that the body is the outward dress and the 'Soul' is the real person who puts on the dress. So if the dress is taken care of only, without any care of the real person—it is sheer foolishness and waste of time.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: '428' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

4:15 A.M.

I had a migraine yesterday afternoon, and it disturbed the evening with another headache during the middle of the night. But I was up at 2 A.M. and began my chanting. Somehow I have not been able to keep up a good pace, and I've only chanted nine rounds. I don't know why that is. There must be some inattention there, and the mind is flitting to other things than hearing the holy names. I'm grateful to be doing my japa without pain, and I should be concentrating more. I won't be too self deprecating about it but keep pushing on and try to improve the numerical count. I have been a little "spaced-out" and need to bear down more on the practice. Falling behind on the count tells me I'm not praying, not working. Japa is a workout not just a layback slow counting.

My under average speed
tells me I'm daydreaming
and not "doing pushups"
as I should in a kind
of concentrated mental
exercise. You are going
too easy on your self
like floating on your
back instead of vigorous
swimming. Krishna wants
to see me working out,
producing nama prabhu
with the certain stress of
effort that is devotion.
Don't lay back, put
fervor into chanting

Krsna's names.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'In Boston 1971' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Prabhupada smaranam

We sit or kneel and look reverently to our spiritual master. This was Boston in 1971. We believe everything he says. We do whatever he asks. He knows he has us under his control. We are young disciples in awe of Prabhupada. He takes the responsibility of guiding our lives. He has taken our karma. He is grateful that we are submissive, but he wants us to be much more competent and organized and preach more effectively in Krishna consciousness. We are passive and await his commands. He have shaven our heads, and we wear eastern Vaishnava clothes. We have given up our American identities. But we are still very much Americans, only recently taken on the life of followers of Lord Caitanya. He knows we are trying our best, and yet we are not yet capable of much. We can chant on our beads, but it is difficult to control the mind. We don't know the esoteric truths of Krishna consciousness. We chant loudly on the streets of Boston, and he is very proud of us for that. We are learning how to distribute Back to Godhead magazine for twenty-five cents, but we haven 't learned yet how to sell his big books. He is patiently waiting for us to do more. He loves us, and we love him. We are at a sweet, early point in our relationship. It is growing to where we will be able to take more responsibilities, and he is grateful for what we are doing now.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Changing' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

I want to be faithful to
the parampara, yet write
something free and fresh.
I used to be able to do it.

I'd tell of a morning walk
in Ireland or spin some
words off a spindle and
let it go with that, bring them
back down like reeling in a
kite. I'd be confident it was
Krishna conscious because I
roamed the night.

He asked me, "Do you write
more about Prabhupada and
Krishna now because you were
criticized for your other books
or is it a natural transition?"
He said he'd keep my answer
confidential. I said, "It's a little
of both." I have a desire to
preach strongly in poems,
and I've also lost the touch
to make those other ones
that had Laurel and Hardy
in them and tuned and twisted
and grew like dandelions.

I wasn't afraid of dandelions, didn't think
of them as weeds but
yellow flowers. I was
different, more free
and confident, more whimsical
and defiant of the powers
that be.

I trusted a freely written
poem was Krishna conscious
in its own unique way
and didn't have to make
it a sermon.

But now I want them
to like it and recognize
it as parampara, as
a sketch from sastra. It's my later years.

Would I like to go back
to freer forms? Yes I'd
like to be bold and easy
and ask more of the reader.
But it's like painting.
If you don't have the
inspiration for it you
can't sit at your desk
and draw the clumsy
very similar hands and bodies.
Yet my parampara poems
are very similar too, so
what's the difference?

Maybe I just think it's
more serious to write
straight about Krishna and
the cowherd boys and girls
more in the line of the
acaryas and not so
playful as to include
TV shows and what
you had for lunch.

This is just an odd one
taking stock, and I'll
have to see tomorrow
where I go from here, whether it's more of the
straight as an arrow or
the bagel antics.

You write each day
what the Lord gives
you in any case,
and you shape it in
a way. Like I
saw that man ride his
bicycle, and I saw that
woman pick up her little
white dog and carry it
in her arms across the
highway.

I work up a sweat on
our walk and run
out of breath when we
return. Yesterday I even
forgot to chant my full
sixteen rounds which I'll
make up today.

You want to leave the
best poems as your
legacy and that includes
the entertainment. So I'll
see you tomorrow, and
we'll find out if I'm
heading in the new direction
or I'll go back to
straight preaching like
a poet–bhakta.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'The Stars …' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Free write

The stars and galaxies are beautiful in the blue sky. The astronomers are intimate with the galaxies in a scientific way, and the people who can designate their shapes and know their Latin names, are fortunate. They know an alphabet in a language which those ignorant of the galaxies are illiterate to. We illiterates don't know how to "connect the dots" and know the drama and panorama of the skies. We don't see an archer releasing a gigantic arrow across the skies. (Nor do we hear him.) We don't see a beautiful queen sitting on a throne holding a ruling mace or a scepter. Some of us can't even see a big dipper pouring something like milk down from the sky into a little dipper, although that is the easiest of all the groups of stats to ascertain. Some of us can't see that wonderful whitish night cloud, the Milky Way. It's worth taking a book out or going to a planetarium for some visits just to learn these things. And yet they are all temporary apparitions in the universe which is itself a temporary manifestation. The symbolical creatures with Latin names and stories are fictional propositions or fanciful creations made up by scientists, astrologers and astronomers. They are not real people, lions, bulls, oxen or whatever.

Man has observed the stats and galaxies and created anthropomorphic creatures which exist only in his imagination. The stars and planets of the universe are actually peopled by living creatures described in the Vedic literatures. They are demigods, angels, and creatures good and mischievous known by names like Apsaras, Gandharvas, gins, etc. At present they can't be seen by telescopes because the scientists are not qualified. Each planet has its own atmospheric conditions, and only those in possession of the "visa" (permission given by God) can go there and see the living beings and live with them. Going to some planet is a material reward because material pleasures of a higher nature take place there. Going to some lower planets is a punishment because hellish sufferings take place there. Beyond the galaxies of the material universe is the spiritual sky where the eternal planets known as Vaikunthas exist. There God is worshiped and served in great awe and opulence by his eternal liberated servitors. Life on the Vaikuntha planets is sac-cid-ananda vigraha, full of eternity, bliss and knowledge. But beyond even the Vaikuntha planets is the planet known as Goloka Vrndavana where the Supreme Lord exists in his original most beautiful two-handed form. The special feature of Goloka.

Vrndavana is where the Supreme Lord reciprocates with His servitors in more intimate relationships than is found even in Vaikuntha. In Vaikuntha, the Supreme Lord's pleasure is restricted by the formality and awe and reverence that exist there. In Goloka Vrndavana activities are conducted in krishna-prema or spontaneous loving service in rasas (or relationships) of servant, friend, parent or amorous lover. Each of these relationships is more intimate than the rest and amorous love (madhurya rasa) is the highest. The activities of the Vaikuntha or the Goloka planets can never be experienced by looking at the sky of the universe or even by traveling through the universe by the limited methods of spaceship travel. Only by performing pure devotional service on Earth can one be promoted to take part in the activities of the spiritual world, far beyond the galaxies of the material universe.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: EDUCATED IN HOW TO BE SATISFIED

According to the sastras, a brahmana, or a cultured person in Krsna consciousness, will not enter anyone's service to maintain body and soul together, and especially not for satisfaction of the senses.

A true brahmana is always satisfied.

Even if he has nothing to eat, he can drink a little water and be satisfied.

This is only a matter of practice.

Unfortunately, however, no one is educated in how to be satisfied in self-realization.

As explained above, a devotee is always satisfied because he feels the presence of the Supersoul within his heart and thinks of Him twenty-four hours a day.

That is real satisfaction.

A devotee is never driven by the dictations of the tongue and genitals, and thus he is never victimized by the laws of material nature.

You Stand Out

Toronto, Ontario

Sitting outside at a café table the neighbourhood woman spotted us coming on foot, "Is it festival season already?" referring to our summer Festival of Chariots. "That's in two months from now," I responded.

"Oh, I just assumed because I saw you in numbers," she said.

"There's only three of us here," I remarked.

"Yeah, but it's the colour you wear that makes you look like you have numbers."

I never thought of it in those terms. The saffron can be loud as a colour. It can make you look larger than life. And yet here ego is not the aim. If anything, saffron cloth is meant to exemplify humility, not amplify 'me'. It stands for and symbolizes simplicity. In fact, for thousands of years wandering mendicants and residential monks have been clad in this passive but lively colour. The cloth does stand out in any landscape.

And for anyone who can admire a sunrise or sunset, you will catch tints in the sky that glow like saffron cloth as if time stared you straight in the face. Frankly, when a monk is in the midst of people, he has a tendency to remind others of the need for change, or improvement, all on the strength of the colour. If ever there was a peaceful colour it would be this peach/rose hue.

As Jaya Keshava, a tall black African, Ramachandra, a family man, though sporting yellow with fine red print, and I took that one hour trek through Rosedale, we certainly did get noticed. The colour did light up passersby like I hadn't seen in a long time.

Our guru, Srila Prabhupada, looked absolutely pure in the colour. In some respects he enhanced the beauty of the cloth by dint of his purity.

2 Problems with the 24

Toronto, Ontario

I had mixed feelings about the approach to the 24 hour kirtan. In the Tagore Centre where their annual event takes place a fine arrangement is made in the middle of the hall. It's a four sided altar erected and adorned with deities and fresh flowers. Participants go 'goom goom' as they say in India or sounds and round in a clockwise fashion while the chanting is uttered form their lips. It's an actual walk around the clock. When tired participants sit on the floor and retain the mantra vibration.

In recent years (we are on our 18th annual) a stage gets filled with able musicians. The problem here is two-fold. By having vocals and musicians on stage it becomes an exclusive experience and not inclusive. One group is up (on the stage) separated from the second group, the walkers, or the goom-goomers.

The second problem I perceive with this set up is that the traditional sravanam and kirtanam that is a receive and respond method becomes challenged because of the dispersement of so many microphones. While one person leads the mantra, everyone else should equally respond in volume to the mantra. Currently several voices are amplified by miked persons who respond, hence leaving all others.

I expressed my dismay at this during the vote of thanks and I believe people understood the problem with the current disempowering approach.

"There is merit in tradition" I explained. The method was always sravanam (hearing) and kirtanam (chanting or responding), not sravanam sravanam, hearing and hearing. The mics have become too much, drowning out other peoples' chances for being involved. Stages and mics need minimal attention.
