Dandavats.com: Srila Prabhupada and the Gaudiya Matha

By Drutakarma Dasa

Why, some question, is ISKCON so reluctant to accept guidance from gurus from the Gaudiya Matha? Why, they wonder, does ISKCON wish to limit its association with those who have taken initiation from such gurus? To fully appreciate the reasons for this, we have to look at the history of Srila Prabhupada's involvement with the Gaudiya Matha.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Srila Prabhupada's fervent appeal for unity

I am fervently appealing to you all not to create fracture in the solid body of the Society. Please work conjointly, without any personal ambition. That will help the cause... your comparison of the soldier and commander is very appropriate. We are on the battlefield of Kuruksetra—one side Maya, the other side Krsna. So the regulative principles of a battlefield, namely to abide by the order of the commander, must be followed. Otherwise it is impossible to direct the fighting capacity of the soldiers and thus defeat the opposing elements. Kindly therefore take courage. You are capable in so many ways. Let things be rightly done so that our mission may be correctly pushed forward to come out victorious.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: '444' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

4:15 A.M.

I slept peacefully last night with no headache or interruption. But I didn't wake up until the alarm went off at 2:30. This was later than yesterday, and so I haven't had so many rounds done. I've only done five so far. They seem to go slowly, as if I were in a car or truck that couldn't accelerate. This is a disappointment. Yesterday I wrote optimistically of my chanting and told myself not to be self-berating. So I'll restrain from that self-criticism now. I'll chant steadily and faithfully with trust that even though I may not feel the holy names are transforming me, they are sustaining me. Without them I would be at a great loss. Early morning chanting is my life. Without it my sadhana would be void. I will chant my quota and so there is nothing to worry about, even though I have not gotten off to such a quick start today.

By now I've sometimes
chanted twelve rounds
but today only five.
I assure myself I'll
catch up and get
my writing done too. But
it's nice when you are
ahead on your schedule
with "money in the bank."
I have to pray for confidence
that I will write my
"smaranam" and later
get back to japa on the
run. Time for a poem
too and Krishna's gift
of lyrical writing. It
all depends on Him
and my earnest cooperation.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Prabhupada is Completely Enthusiastic…' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Prabhupada Smaranam

He has stopped walking, and a crowd of devotees gathers around him. He is on a footpath in a park in a European city. Something in his conversation has prompted him to elaborate on the point, and he is speaking at length. The weather is chilly without sunshine, and Prabhupada is wrapped tightly in his wool cadar and swami-hat. He is in the center, just as Krishna sits in the center of the gopas when He stops for lunch. Each disciple wants to make eye contact with Prabhupada and think, at least for a moment, that Prabhupada is talking to him only. Prabhupada is flowing with Vedic truths. He wants to train up his disciples in the art of polemics, and he simply wants to praise the Lord. When he returns to the temple he will do more of the same, preach the glories of Krishna. He does it all the time. Earlier in the morning he was translating and making purports asserting that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and to please Him is the utmost goal of life. Prabhupada is completely enthusiastic to do this in one way or another, wherever he is.

He is very dear to Krishna. He is very dear to his disciples who are here frozen in time, hanging on his every word and submissively accepting his words as the absolute truth. When he speaks, the force of all the acaryas comes through him. It is nice to contemplate upon a picture of this faithful gathering.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'A Poem after Recovering from a Headache' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

1.

I had the head pain ten minutes
ago, but the medicine and a shower
have subdued it. Now I am fine
to write a poem of Krishna.

My brother questioned me on what
makes a poem a poem, and I
said it was something intuitive.
You stop a line and start a short
one just because one gets long
enough, and it's time to start the
next one. That's the art of
free verse. He tried reading it out loud
to see if he could test it that way,
but it didn't work. You have
to accept them on faith.

As for putting Krishna in the poem,
that is an art in itself. You
have to do more than just quote
the sastra. You have to speak
in your own voice.
Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati once wrote
a long poem that started each
line with the words "Krishna is—"
and that gave him a great
springboard to roam over the
glories of the Lord paraphrasing
the scriptures and expressing
the absolute truth in words
of his own choosing.
Yesterday I wrote that
Krishna was with me when
I jumped out the window
and when I walked into the storefront
the first time. Writing of
Krishna and I as "we"
was a poetical device.

You have to think of a
way to introduce Him.
He is already here.
Just open to Him.
Make your poems
two pages long.

2.

Krishna stands with Radha,
He's in the tribhanga
stance, playing the flute,
She offers Him a betel
nut, this is the classic
pose immortalized in murtis,
although They have many
other poses and dances.

And Krishna drives the chariot
of Arjuna, this is Bhisma's
favorite pose, to see the Lord
racing toward him, dust from
horses' hooves on His body
and blood stains from Bhisma's
arrows which He takes as
lover's bites.

Krishna crawling in the yard of
Yasoda, laddu Krishna
with a big sweet held forward
in His hand—this murti
is not in our sampradaya.

Krishna as Shiva, he's not
exactly Krishna, like yogurt
is not exactly milk. He
swallows the drops of poison
that came from the churning
of the milk ocean and saves everyone.

These pictures of Krishna you
hold in your mind
like baseball cards,
like stationary greeting cards,
placed in the pages of your book.
He's far more beautiful
than that, but they
give you an idea
of His form and pastimes.

He's not impersonal.
I said I recovered from
the headache, but it's
lingering again. Close
out this poem, and
sit in your chair.
Do you want to try
chanting in your mind?

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'The Age of Quarrel' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Free write

You can tell from the sand that this is Ramana Reti in Vrndavana, India. This is the place where Krishna used to play with His cowherd friends and herd the calves and cows. That was five thousand years ago, and still the cows and calves are happy at Ramana Reti. Here they are penned primitively with an old rope, but they are not slaughtered. The cows are milked and the milkmen sell their milk for drinking and cooking into various sweets which are sold in the bazaars or offered to the Deities in the temples. The calves and cows are beautiful, innocent creatures, and it is a great crime that even in India they are slaughtered by the thousands daily.

The age of quarrel and hypocrisy began when Maharaja Pariksit first saw a sudra dressed as a king beating a cow and bull. Maharaja Pariksit stopped the act of brutality, but he spared the life of Kali personified and allowed him to live in places where animal slaughter, gambling, illicit sex and intoxication took place. The wicked sudra pleaded that he too was a subject of the king and should have a place to live. But by sparing his life, Pariksit Maharaja opened the floodgates of what now flourishes as the cruelest act imaginable, the widespread killing of one of the seven mothers of humanity.

The karma from cow killing mounts in calamities for the human race and the earth planet, as Krishna does not tolerate the injustice done to His favorite animal.

Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: puppets in the hands of Krsna...

I had a nice experience in Columbus Ohiio at Ohio State University. It was the 7th day I'd worked the school and I usually don't work the same place that long so I was getting a little ready to move on.

I was approaching people and not many were taking, but I continued and then all of a sudden I handed the book to this wonderful soul and he practically exploded in jubilation. He said, "Woa! This is incredible!"

He started going off about how he was amazed that this was happening and how cool he thought it was, how he had been looking for a Bhagavad Gita and was just starting to become interested in spirituality. His voice and body were overflowing with excitement and enthusiasm and as I gave him an invitation to the temple he said he would definitely go. It was so cool how the mood changed from frustrating to exhilarating in one moment.

>From then on it was as if I was just watching myself interact with the living entities like a marionette in the hands of some transcendental puppet master. It became entertaining to see what kind of episode would play out before me from moment to moment as I continued in wonder enchanted by what was going on.

Especially at colleges it seems like I meet someone every day who has a similar reaction as this person and every time it inspires me so much to continue. Hoping this inspires some others as well.
