ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Subhag Maharaja Visits Melbourne

We are privileged to have His Holiness Subhag Swami visiting Melbourne until Sunday June the 6th. Subhag Maharaja is one of ISKCON's initiating gurus, and one of our senior-most sannyasis. He is based at Mayapur.

SubhagS.JPG Born in Kolkata, His Holiness graduated from the University of Calcutta, joining ISKCON in 1971.

Subhag Swami has translated many of Srila Prabhupada's books into Bengali, including Krsna, The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Teachings of Lord Kapila, Prayers to Queen Kunti, Easy Journey to Other Planets, Matchless Gifts, Teachings of Lord Caitanya, Sri Isopanishad, The Nectar of Instruction and On The Way to Krsna.  Subhag Swami also translated Caitanya Mangala  from Bengali to English, and has been working on translating Ananda Vrndavan Campu (by Srila Kavi Karnapura)  from Sanskrit to English.

At present His Holiness mostly is preaching in the field of His Holiness Bhakti Swarup Damodar Swami and giving guidance to his disciples.

Please take advantage of Subhag Swami's presence in Melbourne to hear some of his realisations of Krishna consciousness.

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Mark your calendars for the upcoming weekend!

Summer is a busy time at the Hare Krishna temple with a lot of fun, festivity and activity! The coming weekend is just the beginning of a fun-filled summer at the Hare Krishna temple!

On Saturday, June 5th, senior monk, Devamrita Swami will be giving the morning Srimad Bhagavatam class at 7:30am at the Hare Krishna Temple. Initiated by Srila Prabhupada in January 1974, since the past 35 years he has traveled extensively on every continent of the world sharing his realizations of Krishna Consciousness. He is very well reputed in the academic circles for his insightful presentations on contemporary topics like Spiritual Economics, Sustainability, Yoga of Money etc. However, those of us who have heard him lead kirtan, know that his kirtans can have devotees dancing in pure joy! He is currently based in New Zealand but is a frequent visitor to Toronto and we are very happy to have him give a very special class!

Sunday, June 6th, will be a very special Sunday Feast. Firstly, it is the Youth Sunday! At this very special Sunday Feast, the youth will be cooking and serving prasadam, taking part in aratis etc. If you are interested in helping out with Youth Sunday, please contact our local youth group Pandava Sena for more information. Another main reason by June 6th Sunday Feast will be very special is because we will be enthralled by amazing class and kirtans led by Bada Hari das. Based in Gainesville, Florida, he is a celebrated Kirtan singer who travels internationally presenting seminars on Vaishnava songs and devotional practices. In his previous visits to Toronto, he had the entire temple room dancing in pure joy and had us all looking forward to his next visit!

A lot happening this weekend, so make sure that you will be at the Hare Krishna temple this weekend to get a chance to meet these two amazing monks and listen from them!

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: No Sunday Feast Recording This Week :(

Due to technical difficulties with the Mic, we were unable to record our live broadcast of the Sunday Feast and so we are unable to post a recording this week. We apologize for any inconvenience as many devotees were hoping to catch a recording of the amazing 8pm arati again.

We hope to resolve the problem and to resume with live broadcasts and videos with the upcoming Sunday Feasts!

Japa Group: The Method Of Chanting

The method of chanting refers to physical considerations such as sitting straight on an asana, chanting during the peaceful predawn hours, and associating with lovers of nama. It also includes using tulasi beads; clear pronunciation; concentrating on the meaning of the mantra; reviewing and avoiding the ten offenses, and repentance for transgressions.

3:55 A.M.

I woke up at 11:47 P.M. last night with a headache. I subdued it and went back to sleep and woke with the alarm clock at 2:30 A.M. I had a new headache and took medicine for it, but it didn't go down. After fifteen minutes I took more medicine, and gradually the pain went down. But my chanting report is mostly about the feeling of pain and not the concentration on the Hare Krishna mantra. I want to share with my readers experience and even instruction about japa, but it's like I'm trapped in a car after a car accident and my consciousness is occupied with pain. I have only a small portion of attention that I can spare for contemplation. The one thing I can teach is that the chanting goes on like a heartbeat despite the physical inconvenience. I continue chanting rapidly and hearing the mantras quietly in my mind. So far I've chanted almost nine rounds, which is not a slow pace, but it's not been a relaxed pinpointing of my mind on prayer to Radha and Krishna. I have been chanting for my survival. It's really not so bad in terms of pain, but it's not good in terms of excellent japa-yajna.

You can't chant well
with a headache, but
you count them nevertheless.
Your quota increases despite
distraction in the head.
It's hard to be talkative or
friendly to my companion when
he comes to the room. I
tell him "I'm hanging in there,"
and he leaves the room,
and I struggle to improve the
quality of the mantras and
get ready to try my writing.
I refuse to let the headache
completely dominate my morning,
although it diminishes my pep.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'In His Own World' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Prabhupada Smaranam

Srila Prabhupada stops on his walk, and he dramatically gestures with both his hands. Svarupa Damodara, Brahmananda Swami, Srutakirti and others gather in closely and listen thoughtfully. He is not speaking something humorous that has made them smile, but they are attentive and serious. He looks like an actor on stage, with his two arms extended and his fingers held apart. He is making a dramatic point. Prabhupada wears his long, hooded coat, and the devotees are wrapped in big chadars, sweaters and scarves. But the chilly weather is of no importance.

Prabhupada is in his own world, speaking his personal realizations of the Vedic truths. He does it for the benefit of his students and also because he is unselfconsciously ecstatic over the words of the acaryas in praise of Sri Krishna. The devotees are spellbound because Prabhupada is not an ordinary presence on the beach but a transcendental speaker like Sukadeva Gosvami. They know they are honored to be in his presence, and they accept it gratefully and soak it in like thirsty sponges. Unlike the dog-walkers and strollers on this California beach, they are fortunate to be close to him like magnets and hear the rare Vedic sound from the bona-fide spiritual master. Fortunately, it is being recorded and can be heard in the future by people who are not even born yet. His words, like the Srimad-Bhagavatam when it was spoken five thousand years ago, are timeless, and this little group is fortunate to be in the presence of Vyasa's direct representative for a vivid retelling of brahma-sabda.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Chanting Underneath Distraction' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Before I begin my Sanskrit
japa of the maha-mantra, I
recite the pranama-mantra of
my spiritual master: "I offer
my obeisances to A. C. Bhaktivedanta
Swami, who is very dear to Krishna
on this earth, having taken shelter at
the lotus feet of the transcendental
Lord … " When I say it, it is
jumbled and lacks feelings
of deep devotion. But I tell myself
that's all right, I know you really
love him. You just can't reach
it right now.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Your Map Of the World' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Free write

The typical New Yorker thinks his neighborhood of the city is the center of the world. The rest of the world is seen as far away and insignificant. The Hudson River is almost as big as the Pacific Ocean. Japan, China and Russia are just dots on the horizon. What really matters is the streets and buildings with action on the west side of the city. This is, of course, an extremely subjective and erroneous map. Seen from the correct universal point of view, all the cities of the world are insignificant, and the people are tiny without influence. Out of false ego we think we are the controllers of everything. We are actually controlled by material nature, and if we see through the scriptures we will see actual reality.

The Krishna conscious scriptures inform us that the living entity is one ten-thousandth the tip of a hair in size. He lives in a material covering of a body which is his material size. As for the planets and countries and cities in the material world, they are all only one-fourth of the size of the spiritual worlds. We and our lands are small in comparison to the spiritual world.

The scriptures give the picture of the material world in comparison to the spiritual world and in comparison to the other planets in the material world. The earth planet is a very small planet in the material world where people suffer the threefold miseries. To think that Manhattan, or Paris, or London or Moscow or Tokyo is the center of the action is a great misconception. They are not places of eternity, bliss and knowledge, and so they are all filled with illusory activities. On The New Yorker map there is no trace of the higher material planets or the spiritual Vaikuntha planets. If we want to see a map of the total reality it would be entirely different, like the cover of Srila Prabhupada's First Canto Srimad-Bhagavatam printed in India. The reader is encouraged to look at that cover for an accurate picture of the mapping of the spiritual and material worlds, which all emanates from the topmost planet of Goloka Vrndavana.

I Will Pursue It!

Burnaby, British Columbia

Nipuna, Chaitanya and I tread the same route as yesterday. We saw the same cyclist as we saw the previous day, and at the same juncture. We also saw a pedestrian on crutches on the same trail at the same time as yesterday. The sky hadn't changed over the two day period. It remained overcast. In other words, the sky was the same. We were walking and we were chanting. Of course, it was the same mantra as yesterday. We would not dare change that.

I had come to visit Vancouver, seeing many of the same community members, all rather happy. There were a host of young kids, very new to me. And I saw changes in some of the more senior folks. Some middle-aged had intensified their hair color. I guess one person had a fresh dye job. Another person's hair had been solid with one shade and now that has been broken up with grayness leaving a pleasant salt and pepper effect. So I noticed some adjustments.

There is the usual crowd, but there are also new faces including a woman who was formerly a Mountie officer, turned yoga teacher, and is now practicing bhakti yoga. It is certainly a welcome sign to see young and new people coming to explore a higher conscious experience. It came to mind that as we journey through life, we encounter the old and the new, the usual and the fresh. Tomorrow, I will meet with young members of our community and conduct a workshop with them.

An idea sprung up. On the Burnaby property, there are a number of senior citizens living there. Why not give them some attention as well? I am thinking about starting up a one night a week program for them where they assemble in the temple room to engage in hearing and chanting. Such a program would be welcome. It seems like the right thing to do.

I will pursue it and accommodate the new and the usual.

You Are What You Have Thought

Burnaby, British Columbia

It makes sense to follow the trail under the skytrain as it acts as a canopy from the rain. It was actually a drizzle...mercy for the plants. B.C is known as a place of lush greenery. It's flag is marked with the image of the sun which is somewhat misleading. It's a mild climate.

My walking partner, Nipuna, and I passed by a housing construction crew as we left the shelter of the skytrain. One worker was warm with a greeting, and another was just a little shy of being grumpy. It's my speculation that 50% of people who rise in the morning get up on the wrong side of the bed and the other 50% are excited about the day.

Nipuna and I proceeded on. We stopped briefly to read what had been spray painted on the pavement near where we were standing. In bold black it read, "You are what you continually think about." I thought it was a profound statement, echoing a message from the Bhagavad-Gita. For instance, in verse 8.6 Krishna states, "yam yam vapi smaran bhavam...Whatever state of being one remembers when he quits his body, O son of Kunti, that state he will attain without fail."

In other words, if you are constantly processing hate for example, this mood will move you in the next term into a body suited for expressing aggression. If one is motivated by love and kindness, then a body suited to embody these qualities will be the end result. The warning about what you consume is obvious. That word of caution holds true for what enters the mind and the mouth.

It was George Bernard Shaw, who stated, "You are what you eat!"

In Vancouver

Vancouver, British Columbia

Westjet Airlines, which I took to Vancouver like all airlines, have their very own travel flight magazine. "Up" rated Vancouver as the number one walking friendly city in the nation. I'm inclined to agree when it isn't rainy. Seriously, I do like walking in this very pretty city. But once I got out of the terminal I couldn't walk. I had to wait. My driver was there. He just missed me. While waiting, I had a chance to meet a member of the band "Fields of Green". Let's call him Steve. (I don't remember his name.)

Steve had his acoustic guitar in his case next to him at a sitting bench. His band plays everything from rock to country music. I told Steve about my love for music and how my Dad always liked to play something on the gramophone like "Singing the Blues" or Lucille Starr. In any event, music became an addiction for me. I told Steve, I floated from rock to folk, to blues, then classical to raga and finally kirtan.

Steve knew about kirtan, its magical sound and potent effect. Apparently, he was exposed to it in his hometown, Kelowna, where he heard the sound "Nitai" and "Gauranga". It's good to know the good vibration is getting around.

At nighttime, sound waves took over the ether in the Burnaby temple. One of the favorite avatars of Krishna devotees, Narasingha, the half man, half lion incarnation, was being honored. The local devotee actor, Peter Konikow, did a great job as narrator of a drama using as its subject this powerful avatar. It seems like Peter always comes up with fresh ideas.

I did manage to squeeze in a fifty minute walk with Nipuna, my assistant during my stay here. We dodged those puddles of rainfall even though the darkness did well to conceal them. The sleep for the night was good. I believe it was the chanting for protection from Narasingha by the community youngsters that saw to my safety and deep slumber. Thanks to the youngsters at the Narasingha festival.
