Aprameya Swamy Temple
On the Mysore - Bangalore Highway, when you pass Channapatna, a tall tower appears on your right. This is temple of Lord Aprameya, his consort Aravindavalli, and of the crawling (Dougladde) Krishna.
This area is a Divya Kshétram and a Punya Bhoomi. The greenery, Punya Theerthams, the temple complex and its a-varanams make the atmosphere very pious.
“MALLUR” has an interesting story to its name. Sa-rangada-ra, a King, had his limbs amputated by his enemies, who threw them in the Nirmala river, which flows near this place. Though suffering from immense pain, he chanted the Bhagavath na-ma- incessantly and approached the temple where he was blessed with a darshan of a Divya Jyothi. With the Lord’s bountiful grace, his limbs grew back to their original form. “Growing” in Tamil is “Mulaithathu” and since Sa-rangada-ra’s limbs grew back, this Kshétram got its name ”MULAITHOOR” (Tamil) and as time passed , “Mulaithoor” became today’s “Mallur”.
This sthalam is also referred to by other names in our ancient sacred texts, a few being:
“DAKSHINA AYODHYA”: “CHATUR VEDA MANGALA PURA”: “GNYa-NA MANTAPA KSHéTRAM”: “RAJENDRA SIMHA NAGARI”:
Sri Aprameya swamy Temple is a very ancient structure. Some historians date it back 3000 years, but local historic documents date it not less than 1500 years. There is evidence that this temple existed even before Lord Ramanuja’ s Digvijayam in Karnataka and it will not be a surprise if it was built much before Lord Ramanuja’ s Birth. There is a written document preserved to date, which mentions the Kainkaryam of lighting Nanda Deepam to Lord Aprameya in the year 980. This is a proof of the temple’s existence in that period.
Legend has it that Lord Ra-ma stayed here, in Dakshina Ayodhya, for many years and during this time, he worshipped Lord Aprameya. Hence Lord Aprameya is also known as Sriramaprameya. Lord Ra-ma also performed Homams and other rituals in this place and even to this day, there are remnants of the structures where he conducted the Yagnams. In kshetram Mahatmiyam Kandam of Brahmanda Purana there is a description of Lord Aprameya in twelve chapters.
The specialty of the temple is it is standing on sand and not on any solid foundation. It appears from the style of construction of the temple, that it was expanded during the regimes of certain kings who ruled Mallur in the past.
Standing outside the temple, one can see the towering and beautiful Raja Gopuram. Built in the dravidian architectural style, one finds sculptures from the Dasa Avataram adorning the side walls (Madal) of the Raja Gopuram. The Maha Dwaram is 30 feet high. Opposite the Maha Dwaram is the tall Deepa Sthambam made from a single stone which vies with the Maha Dwaram in height, at 30 feet. Facing the Rajagopuram, is the Purandaradasa Mantapam, a tribute to the composer of the famous krithi “Jagadoddharana Adisidalu Yashoda” which immortalizes his ecstasy on seeing the Navaneetha Krishna here, for generations to come.
This is the sannidhi of Sri Aravindavalli Tha-yar. As Goddess Maha Lakshmi was born in a Lotus flower in Vishnu Theertham (to the North West of the temple), she is known as Aravindavalli. She is seated in the Padmasana posture on a Lotus. Tha-yar is giving darshan with her chaturbhujams, holding Lotus flowers in the two upper hands and blessing devotees with two hands in Varadha and Abhaya postures. In the same Sanctorum you will find idols of Sri Anda-l Tha-ya-r and Sri Desikan.
As you proceed to the North Western ramparts of the temple, the next Sannidhi you see is that of the renowned Lord Navaneetha (Thavazrar/ambegal (crawling)) Krishna. This Krishna figures in a lot of Pura-nas. It is believed that Sage Vyasa did the Prathishta of this Vigraham. This lovely, adorable Krishna Vigraham depicts Him in a crawling pose, holding his favorite butter in his right hand. It appears as if Lord Krishna is crawling towards you to invoke the maternal instincts within you, compelling you to spontaneously shower your love on him. His face is like Poorna Chandra Bimbam, his doe-like eyes are very attractive and the curly locks of his hair are a sight to behold. This Neela Megha Shayma is crawling on a Garuda Peetam. He is adorned with a lot of jewels like amulets, chains, necklaces and anklets. He flaunts his Pulinagam (Tiger Claws dollar) as if to show off his prowess while the priests make sure he wears it to avoid Kan Dristi Dosham from his many devotees ogling at his boundless beauty! While drinking in this lovely sight, you may think you heard the jingling of bells from the cord he wears around his waist and the gorgeous anklets adorning his tender ankles, as he crawls closer to your heart!!
His beauty inspired Purandara dasa to compose the popular krithi “Jagadoddharana Adisidalu Yashoda” when he visited this sannidhi. The delicious Navaneetham he is holding in his right hand is no ordinary butter but Gnyanam (self realization) shaped like a butter ball. Parandha-man is willing to share this precious treat with you, if only you ask him for it, with a true mind. Another boon that this God is famous for granting is the gift of children to those who need it. The loads of silver and wooden cradles in the Sannidhi offered by people desirous of begetting offspring stand testimony to this fact.
You are now in the divine presence of the majestic looking moola moorthy of Lord Sri Aprameya made of Sa-ligra-ma Shila-. It is an ancient Idol of the Lord.’ Prameya-’ means measurable quantity, Aprameya- means immeasurable and since his mercy is of immeasurable quantity, he is called so
His two upper arms are holding the Shanka and Chakra and in the lower two arms are the Gadha- and Padma in the Abhayahastam mudra. The Shukana-sika Mantapam houses Lord Aprameya’s Uthsavar in a sandal wood Mantapam. He is bedecked with jewelry. This Uthsavar is a replica of the Moolavar and is extremely beautiful. Uthsavar is accompanied by Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi tha-yars. The Divine trio are accompanied by a Uthsavar Moorthy of Lord Ramanuja and it appears as if he is doing Kainkaryam to the Trinity.

Australian News: The Power of Sound: Sri Prahlada at Govinda’s Lotus Room
Sri Prahlada and the Bhakti band played to a full house in the Lotus Room at Govindas on Saturday night, February 19th. We heard about the power of sound. How sound as music can make produce happiness, can calm you, or excite you. The we heard that the spiritual sound of the kirtan, of the singing the divine names in the association of others has a powerful effect, that of awakening your spiritual nature.
Then the kirtan arose: Prahlada and the band leading the voyage and the audience joining in on response. Everyone seemed to know when it was their turn and a river of bliss poured through the room. Afterward many people commented on how much fun it is to chant along and how a definite positive feeling arises.
Just in case you couldn’t be there, here’s a small taste of how things started up, later on people found it hard to stay seated.
Then there was dancing. The sound of the kirtan is so infectious that for some it is hard to stay still and is as if the body just wants to dance in responce to the music.
Then a delicious dinner from Govindas buffet.
Long live the kirtan revolution

H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Sunday 20 February 2011--Transforming Hell into Heaven--and--Bogus Lord Rama Asks Us for 50,000 Rupees
A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(TM) Sunday 20 February 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Transforming Hell into Heaven Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram--Austin, Texas USA We live in world in which people are suffering greatly because of one problem only: They are not Krishna conscious. All of their other problems such as disease, food shortage, water shortage, crime, terrorism, air pollution, water pollution, and global warming are not the actual causes of their suffering. Rather these are simply symptoms of their lack of Krishna consciousness. If Krishna consciousness can be universally accepted as the foundation of the human civilization, this ever-increasingly more hellish planet will be transformed into a heaven on earth. Therefore there is no greater welfare work that one can dedicate his life to than spreading the Krishna consciousness movement all over the world for the deliverance of the entire human society from illusion and misery. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Answers According to the Vedic Version: Request: I Am Rama. Send Me 50,000 Rupees I am Lord Rama. And I am here to implement a new strategy of loving and caring for everyone without any discrimination of caste and religion. Please help this wish. Please send 50 lakhs of Indian rupees * as loan to uphold my self respect, and I will return the amount with interest. Please help your Rama not to stand as beggar before the selfish persons. Help your Lord, so that he will save this world. Because now he is an ordinary human being, taking your help is also the part of your Lord's strategy to deal with this concrete jungle. Please understand the special strategy. With your help, I will be worldly to deal the worldly things. I am informing the cinema personalities to make movies about me, but they are not digesting my strategy. I need to pursue them with your help. Your support at this stage is very critical according to my physical position as ordinary human being in order to ascend to my position as the mighty king of this universe. P.A. Ravishanker * Editor's Note: 50 Lakhs of Indian rupees is US$1,100. Answer: You Are Nonsense, Not Lord Rama. You are not Lord Rama. You are nonsense. We can understand who is a bona fide incarnation of God by the authorized descriptions given in the Vedic literatures. The Vedic scriptures reveal that after Lord Caitanya's advent 500 years ago that the next incarnation of God to manifest on this planet will be the Kalki avatar 427,000 years from now. Therefore we can understand that your claim to be Lord Rama is spurious. It is the greatest cheating to falsely present oneself as God. Those who cheat in this way are condemned to be punished in the darkest region of the universe. You should be ashamed of yourself for trying to collect money under the pretense that you are Lord Rama come to save the world. Kindly give up this sinful business of falsely claiming you are God and earn your livelihood by honest means. It is better to be an honest sweeper in the street than to be a charlatan so-called incarnation of God. [EXPLANATION OF THIS CONTENT:
At present I am privately writing an autobiographical project. I cannot write it fast enough to print a section every day. Therefore, I am printing on this site a book called Every Day, Just Write. A book by the title Every Day, Just Write was already printed by me some ten years ago but it was a heavily-edited version. I am now printing the unedited version, which is fresh and new to the readers. I hope my readers will find it so. When I am finished with the autobiographical project, I will print that.]
Every Day, Just Write, Volume I: Welcome Home to the One Big Book of Your Life
November 22, 1996
3:38 A.M.These early hours I never use well enough. Can’t keep awake, he says, to read Cc. Did you read any of it today? Yes, I read about Lord Caitanya going to a Nrsimha temple near Visakhapatnam, where He made prayers. Sridhara Swami has also written a number of prayers in worship of his Deity, Nrsimhadeva. And Lord Caitanya continued walking and telling whoever He met on the road about Krishna. Finally He came to the Godavari River. There He sat and chanted Hare Krishna mantras. Suddenly He beheld the arrival of Ramananda Raya with a thousand men. They met and embraced. Soon followed talks where Lord Caitanya asked Ramananda Raya the perfection and practice of life. I will read it, but I need the best time in which I don’t fall asleep so rapidly. You have to fight that.
What do you mean? Tell us something beyond yourself. Amundsen
went straight to the South Pole, beating Captain Scott by several weeks. The red spider crawls along the wall. The head gets sleepy. Maybe he needs rest or maybe not. He has to wait all this time before the sun comes up. So I advise you to lie on your back propped up with pillows and just think. Some good ideas will come, or perhaps a zany dream, and you could at least record it. You are in Krishna’s lap, nothing can happen without Him. Prabhupada says it’s not enough to know just a few things about Krishna, that He was born in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva, that He danced with the gopis and spoke something in the Bhagavad-gita. Asamsayam samagram. You should thoroughly know Krishna; that’s required. His supremacy over all and the nature of His transcendental, human-like pastimes. The Goswamis give you the best books for that. Yeah, if you are tired that is what I recommend—lie down and let it sweep over you, not for long, either. It can take only fifteen minutes or more, and you’ll be refreshed and then can keep on chanting.I was reading in a collection of writing sessions I did last summer one that discussed our faith in the spreading of Krishna consciousness. I said sometimes it gets depleted and smothered by the rhetoric. Then I wrote this: “That’s why, more than anything, I seek to free my own language from rhetoric. That’s why writing sessions are important.”
I am feeling a conviction that the more you write, the process will work and you’ll discover where to go. It may be a new project looming up or just more of this project, and truths will come out within this. To confirm this, I see in these writing sessions from last summer how gradually Memories was building up. I gave a lecture about Vyasa asking Narada to tell his life. I said that we all know a life which we should inquire into, which is our own life. In the writing session I wrote, “What I couldn’t say, what was really on my mind and heart, is that we ought to tell our confession, our real story, we ought to know who we are, and that is a part of Krishna Consciousness. That lecture was like a harbinger for Memories project. But no one in the audience, nor I, could know that at the time.” Let me have faith and hope that right now I’m on the wave of good things to come out. I have to pursue it. And if you do more, then you can cover the ground more. When you’re writing it may seem like you’re not going anywhere, but Krishna is seeing, and He is ultimately the mover behind the process.
8:31 A.M.
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare. Rain, a little. Windows of shed not frozen. I wrote note to Manu requesting gas heater. Madhu says he feels a need for the operation. Hernia causes discomfort. He pushes it in and gets relief, but it pops out again.Ask for tapioca, and you get it two days in a row. Mail due today.
Tenth chapter of Bhagavad-gita reading completed. There, now. What’s new in the world of spirit-soul? Haridasa Thakura said, when asked by Lord Caitanya what’s the news,“Whatever mercy You care to bestow on me.” I have nothing. I await Krishna’s muse, Krishna’s direction. That’s real free writing. You admit to blank-blank, struggle, the most external reportage on your own. “I know nothing but Krishna is my Lord, and He may handle me roughly in embrace and make me brokenhearted by not being before Me.” These are Radharani’s words, yet all jivas know an infinitesimal spark of that, especially those coming to bhakti-marga. Your mercy, Krishna, is all I know.
I may rhyme or pun or make up a mini-story, give little life report—nothing exists outside of Krishna, His energies. Believe it? Yes, sir.
Sergeants left and right. They are putting the carrier on the roof of the car. Going to Dublin for the day. National Council Meeting of ISKCON Ireland is today. I don’t go. I walk in grass and confer with grass blades and sky and pen on blank page. I don’t discuss issues with other managers for decisions. I just, just mouth like a fish. Don’t pretend you are better, like a Thoreauvian. Staying back home to gaze at navel. I’m not doing that. I read at least a little. So time is not wasted.
See things through the window? No, I cannot. It is not as cold today. Scratch, scratch.
O Krishna, You are silence and feminine qualities like ksama (patience), and You are punishment to the wrongdoers. Of birds You are Garuda, of Pandavas You are Arjuna, of months November-December, and of seasons You are spring. All these are just a tiny sample of Krishna’s qualities in material and spiritual worlds. There is no need to go on with it. Know that all glorious things are but a spark of His splendor. As Supersoul He is life of all that lives.
Krishna, Krishna, Krishna. Now where do we go?

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: From a lecture by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada
(Unnamed) Babaji arrived complaining to me. While weeping he spoke. Someone had taken his quilt. Neither those who had taken the quilt nor the quilt owner understood the real situation. Someone was thinking that it was not possible to blame anyone since it was the desire of Krsna. Then I said "Why are you not following the great devotees? Instead you are just imitating, accepting beads along with quilt and clothing, in the dress of a false renunciate." The south Indian vaisnavas have criticized in the following way the mayavadis who accept kaupina and quilt while giving up sikha and thread:
katham kantham vahasi durbuddhe gardabhair api durvaham Why do you foolishly carry a blanket which is difficult to carry even by the donkeys?
(Looking at the babaji) Why can you not understand that you have been benefited by having your quilt taken away? Not worshiping the Lord is really detrimental. All happens by the will of the Lord.

Kripamoya dasa, UK: Catholic membership up by 15 million from 2008
Figures given to the Pope this morning show that since 2008, the number of baptised Catholics has increased by 15 million. The number of priests is down, and the number of monks and nuns continues to fall, but people professing Roman Catholic Christianity has significantly increased.
There are no comparative figures for Vaishnavism, although in ISKCON rough worldwide estimates are often made based on numbers initiated or those having taken up the chanting of the maha-mantra.
It would appear that figures for those persons professing Catholicism can be directly related to numbers of missionaries, preachers, teachers and, perhaps more importantly, pastoral workers – ordained or lay workers – who sustain the spiritual growth of the new Catholic in the first five years after baptism.

If crying is the preserve of advanced devotees steeped in devotional mellows and deep feelings of separation from Lord Krishna, should it bother us to display a show of apparent weakness, by crying for Krishna?

Back when I used to be IndianI am standing outside thepool hall with my sister. She strawberry blonde. Stale sweatand beer through theopen door. A warrior leans on his stick, fingers blue with chalk.Another bends to shoot. His braids brush the greenfelt, swinging to the beatof the jukebox. We move away.Hank Williams falls againin the backseat of a Cadillac.I look back.A wind off the distant hills lifts my shirt, brings the scentof wounded horses.• Email to a friend • •

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): Poem, February 18
Which way is he going?
He wants to go upwards,
to Krishna. Hell-bent poets
don’t behave like brahmins,
but I am a brahmana
and observe the rules
intertwined gently saxophones
in soft bop phrases. This is roundabout route,
but I intend to make
it straight to Krishnaloka
even if it takes hundreds
of years. She’d rather not wait so
long. Just a single lifetime
and go to paradise. I’ve already
had so many lifetimes. But
looking at this one I can’t say
it’s very perfect and should
count as the last one. It’s
not a brave outward
finish. It’s retiring and
slowing down, the piano
is followed by dissonant
voices. I am sincerely
aimed in His direction
but not moving so quickly.
It all depends on His mercy
where I will go.• Email to a friend • •

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: News Article: Followers leading the way
Professional soccer player John Howie gave it all up to pursue a life as a Hare Krishna.
Nowadays the father of two gets up at 4am every day to meditate and then goes off to work as a primary school teacher.
The Torbay resident first came across the religion when he was walking down a Melbourne street in the 1970s and saw a group singing:
"Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Hare, Hare."
At the time there were rumours that Hare Krishna was a "sex-crazed" cult, Mr Howie says. But nothing could be further from the truth. The religion does not condone sexual relations before marriage.
Mr Howie is originally from Scotland and was playing for the Melbourne George Cross soccer team. He was so intrigued by the group that he became a vegetarian, following the Hare Krishna principal of karma and not harming a living animal.
When he met his wife Therese they both took the path to becoming Hare Krishna, whose followers worship the Hindu god Krishna.
The pair were given spiritual names by a leader of the religion in the western world, Swami Prabhupada, when they decided to fully embrace the lifestyle.
John is known as Jaya Sila and Therese goes by Vimala. In their working life they go by their given names and it is only at social occasions with other followers they are known by their spiritual names.
Around the home, the couple wear painted marks called tilaka on their foreheads, which symbolise that they have been touched by god.
They worship at an altar in their house in the early hours of the day.
"People call it an ungodly hour, but it is actually one of the most godly hours," Mrs Howie says.
The altar is filled with pictures of gods and essences from India and even includes a prayer from the Catholic saint St Francis of Assisi. The prayer belonged to Mrs Howie's mother.
The couple often go out chanting with other followers or attend festivals.
Their children Nandu and Saraswati, now young adults, grew up following the religion and still practise some of its teachings.
"We live normal lives and live in normal houses. You don't have to be living in a temple to be a Hare Krishna and I don't think many people know that," Mr Howie says.
