H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Monday 21 February 2011--$110,000 Loan Denied to Bogus Lord Rama--and--Proper Mood For Devotional Service?

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(TM) Monday 21 February 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: $110,000 Loan Denied to Bogus Lord Rama Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram--Austin, Texas USA Yesterday we reported a bogus incarnation of Lord Rama who was asking us for a loan of 50 lakhs of Indian rupees to help him to be recognized in the world as Lord Rama. This was mistakenly noted as being the equivalent of US$1,100. But the actual amount our so-called Lord Rama was requesting was US$110,000. The sad state of affairs in this Kali yuga is that such bogus incarnations and charlatan gurus are able to attract followers and build movements. Our so-called Lord Rama, though, did not get anywhere with us because we have been well trained by our spiritual master to easily spot such bogus incarnations and gurus. Since unfortunately, most people are not so well trained, they often fall victim to such charlatans. For want of enlightened governments such cheaters who speak all nonsense in the name of truth are able to perpetuate their crimes against humanity without being checked. Even during Lord Krishna's time there was a bogus incarnation named Paundraka, who challenged Lord Krishna that he, Paundraka, was the real Supreme Lord. Paundraka challenged Lord Krishna in battle and was beheaded by the Lord. In a similar way all of the cheaters are defeated by Lord Krishna in His all-powerful form of death. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: Proper Mood For Devotional Service? What is the mood of our devotional service supposed to be? I understand that we must be enthusiastic in devotional service but my question is: What should the intent of serving Krishna be? For joy? I mean to say is it okay to approach Krishna consciousness as a way of experiencing happiness? I personally am asking this question because I want to experience Krishna Consciousness out of the curiosity of the joy or happiness it will bring. If this is the wrong approach, or if we should just think of it as simply serve Krishna and not worry about our own happiness, then please help me understand this subject. MB Answer: Give Happiness to Krishna Krishna consciousness means the mood of giving happiness instead of taking happiness. Just as a mother neglects her own comforts to give comfort to her child, the devotee of the Lord is more interested in giving the Lord pleasure than he is in deriving pleasure from his service to the Lord. The beauty of Krishna bhakti, devotion to Lord Krishna, is that this mood of selfless service catapults such a devotee into the highest region of pure, unlimited happiness. It is sometimes said that one has to give of himself before he is worthy to receive, and this principle is quite essential in the practice of Krishna consciousness. Unless one is willing to sacrifice his own satisfaction for the satisfaction of the Lord, he will never be able to taste the full bliss of Krishna consciousness. And when one thus abandons all self-centeredness to become 100% Krishna-centered he will experience an unparalleled, uninterrupted, ever-increasing happiness, which is known only to those rare souls who have become perfect in loving God. Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada on being a babu

In a 1936 lecture he warned his disciples against become babus (fancy gentlemen):

There is no benefit if a person gives up his home in order to become lazy. "We do no work, not even to serve the guru and Vaisnavas." The perception of [a certain disciple] is not incorrect. He does not care for the opinions of others. I have spent a lot of his money. I have recently fallen ill. Others cannot understand that I cannot move alone. Do not imitate that person and learn to be a babu. Why are they spending unnecessarily on nourishing the body? One should consider that if there is income, it should be utilized in Mahaprabhu's preaching mission. We should live in a humble manner. If others have an opportunity for service to the Lord, they should endeavor in that. "When my old body passes way, its requirement of two or three seras of milk will be saved." One should not attempt to live as a babu. If there is money, one can preach about the Lord and perform service to the Lord.

It is not necessary to become a babu. What is necessary is to preach, not in India, but to the whole world. Thus we will not make joint mess for eating and drinking. There is no need of this. We will not subscribe to any kind of human judgement. Have we attained human birth only to eat? Do we live in order to attack others who are most pure? Are we only making arrangements for nourishing our bodies and increasing the flesh on our countrymen, and in the western world, fighting and killing each other? It is necessary to do that which will benefit people eternally. In expanding our organization we should not destroy our goal. One who is narrow minded cannot obtain the mercy of the Lord. One must establish temples not for personal prestige but for spreading spiritual teachings. Human birth is not meant for engaging in village politics. Let others act according to their understanding. But we should not do that.

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

EXPLANATION OF THE TEXT:

At present I am working on an autobiographical project. The writing of this project goes slowly, and I cannot write enough to print it every day. Therefore, I am posting daily a book called Every Day, Just Write. A book by that title was printed many years ago but it was heavily edited. I am now posting the unedited edition, which is fresh reading, and I am confident my readers will like it. So please note that this journal is telling of things that happened in 1996, and it is not a journal of my present day’s activities. Presently I am quietly writing my autobiographical text, and when it is finished I will print it.

Every Day, Just Write, Volume I: Welcome Home to the One Big Book of Your Life

November 22, 1996 3:38 A.M.

Go back, remember. I did that and will do it again in order to live. I won’t stand on my head, take dope or listen to music to live. But I want to live. Do it quietly, write and read. But the outer act is not enough.

Remembering helped. There is difficult work in everything, for jivas. Best to work in the bhakti field. It produces best fruits, flowers, the tree that grows out of the world to Goloka.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Remembering…Scratch pen. Take a brisk walk. Thank Lord Krishna, origin of all, for giving you days of health (as well as those in pain). Please let me fulfill my own ambition to be a better devotee. It’s not over yet; I could still improve by His grace. Stay steady.

1:09 P.M.

Where am I going, what should I do? You draw a blank sometimes. You hear or read the sastras and it doesn’t move you. You feel unmoved. That creates the emotion of, “Who am I, what should I do?” But it’s not that racing to a change will bring relief. You have to face the lack of taste at certain times of the day. It’s like physical cycles.

Lake is perfectly mirror clear and calm right now. Cold but calm. It will change, change. I’m sitting here gazing out. “Do something!” A proactive wife or brother or authority would say. But I have avoided them for now. I want to be active but I also want to only sit and look out. Measuring time. Be careful. Don’t let it slip away like sand down the hourglass.

Hare Krishna. Pray to Krishna.¨

Soon action is forced on you, answering mail, speaking to someone. A little respite where you don’t have that pressure.

2:35 P.M.

Bored, dry, empty. Watch myself walk out here. Avoided greeting or talking with Syamamayi who came to the house to collect lunch plates just as I was leaving—because she is an unmarried lady, and I’m a sannyasi. Into shed, bolt door behind me. See the collie who had walked me out here—now he trots away.

Again I think, “Why not increase japa rounds?” It will be something to do. You’d feel bored and empty and dry but would know you were surrendering to harinama. Now I am trying to surrender to writing. This morning told myself, “Go ahead, the more you write, it forges the way to where you are going.” And now I think why not more japa—at the expense of writing? It would mean something less than what you’re doing, less gazing out the window, maybe even less sleep. Less browsing through any nondevotee books and maybe even no reading in books like Ujjvala-nilamani. It would be chant, chant, chant but still write, write. And neither does it have to be a pretentious (that word again) “Japa Directed Writing Book”. Japa may appear more in what you write. Your writing can keep its title, Every Day, Just Write or you could shift into Every Day, Just Write and Chant.

You are alone here for a month so why not admit it’s a bhajana mood? Why not chant more in kutir shed? You can vocalize—call out your cries of dry! Alone! Bored! This is all?—through words of Hare Krishna mantra.

Oh it will be dry I guarantee. You’ll feel, “Why all this chanting?”

You may think, “I am better prepared to talk to devotees. I have this bhakti secret now.” But maybe not even that. There is no secret to increase except, “I’m chanting more.” Sheer increase is all you often feel; more moving on the abacus counter beads, that’s all. And yet an undercurrent develops—more holy names.

And for writing. It’s a way to admit you have nothing else to write or say. You are empty. And so you chant. And that gives you something new to say, a worthy struggle recognized by all Vaisnavas—“The Vaisnavas’ ordeal”, to chant. Oh, it’s prayer, just like Christian monks and others, classic universal prayer—our prayer advised by Lord Caitanya. You can tell Srila Prabhupada and he may say, “Why aren’t you out preaching?” But still he won’t disapprove.

If you give your heart. And it’s not either—or, writing or japa. What do you say?

Oh, but right now to chant even one round above sixteen seems hard. I’d get a bigger head start if I’m to do it. And work on those early sleepy hours—you stop watch.

And I’ve been pretty free of headaches, so that would have to stay steady for me to this. It’s a dare. You can try it and if it doesn’t work, still…

Yeah, I do have spots of time. Maybe draw less too… Use time well.

Prabhupada compared the child marriage in Vedic culture (his wife was eleven when he married, his mother in law was nine years old, etc.) to the practice of Deity worship in the temple. When the bride and husband are so young there is really no question of love between them. But the custom is the girl brings some food to the husband and does little services for him and they have various exchanges—although they don’t live together. However, by going through the motions the husband and wife gradually becomes attached to each other until they become so much in love that they would never leave each other. This is compared to vaidhi-bhakti. What is true of Deity worship is also true of chanting. Chant, chant, chant, without love, chant, chant, chant with offenses—but eventually…

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami (Ret.): Poem, February 20

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Yesterday it was nice having
lunch with Saci and Keli,
ravioli and butter sauce.
Then writing “God the Axe”
my memory of “A Love Supreme”
in 1965 believing in God
a year before meeting your
spiritual master.

It was nice overcoming depression
and making jokes with Baladeva.
”India” is playing now, but I
am not going there nor to
Costa Rica. Staying in this
room it’s all right.

This morning I’ll read critically
but with love what I’ve
written so far of the
Autobiography. You
chanted your rounds.
You didn’t like the breakfast
he served, but Saci read
from Krishna book how Sahadeva
praised Krishna as the most
worshipful present at
the yajna. Sisupala stood
and called Krishna a crow,
a rogue, a dacoit.
He was inviting death.

It is actually not so easy to be subhasubha-parityagi. Bhaktiman yah sa me priyah - then one becomes very dear to Krishna as soon as we renounce both auspicious and inauspicious activities

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: One Million Beer Bottles Later and it’s a Buddhist Temple

“From your letter I can understand how nice this farm is. I am very happy to see fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, grains, the devotees taking sumptuous prasadam and chanting Hare Krsna. This is the actual meaning of human life. It is a very good farm, from your letter I can understand.

“Whatever you build, get the building materials locally. If you can manufacture tiles locally, then your house problem is solved. Build up bamboo frame, and on it place tiles. In any event get everything locally. I wish to make a farm tour and then I shall surely visit your farm.”

Letter from Tamal Krsna Goswami, on behalf of Srila Prabhupada
to Hari Sauri dasa, ISKCON Melbourne,
10 August 1977

Here is an example of someone taking the point Srila Prabhupada made by creatively using locally available materials:

“Thai monks from the Sisaket province have used over one million recycled glass bottle to construct their Buddhist temple. Mindfulness is at the center of the Buddhist discipline and the dedication and thoughtfulness required to build everything from the toilets to their crematorium from recycled bottles shows what creativity and elbow grease can accomplish.

“The Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew temple is about 400 miles northeast of Bangkok in the city of Khun Han close to the Cambodian border. Using Heineken bottles (green) and Chang Beer bottles (brown) the monks were able to clean up the local pollution and create a useful structure that will be a visual reminder to the scope of pollution and the potential we can make with limber minds.

bottle temple

“The water tower and tourist bathrooms are even made from beer bottle litter. The monks were able to have the local people bring them the building materials which beautifully reflect the Thai sun.”

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: In the News: ISKCON does not want McDonalds as neighbor

Picture
http://www.demotix.com/news/596358/isckon-does-not-want-mcdonalds-neighbour
A few hundred members of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), also called as The Hare Krishna Movement, protested Saturday 19th February 2011 against the opening of a McDonalds shop at Phoenix, in the centre of the island, next to their land where they’ll build a temple soon. The two are separated by a road less than 10 metres wide.
«We are not against development or any other religion. We just say, please build your meat-eating shop far away from us, not next to our place of worship», Sanjay Das, Public Relations Manager of ISCKON (Mauritius) said.
Members of this international organisation are strictly vegetarians and they do venerate cows.
The organisation has called upon the Supreme Court in Port-Louis the Mauritian capital, to stop the opening of this shop. The case is to be heard on 22nd February 2011.
Meanwhile the Local Government Ministry has granted a development permit to the promoters of McDonalds. The shop is almost ready and will open soon.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: What an appropriate sloka this morning! Express Sunday morning Srimad Bhagavatam class.

Picture
We got back past  1am from the book distribution at the 24 hour kirtan and just finshed morning SB class and are heading back.

However this mornings verse was so appropriate and the "energy nectar" needed to head back to hear the maha mantra and spread these sloka gems folks being introduced to the sweet potencey of the holy name.

The potency and clarity of this verse is amazing which made a shortened class more effective and held the family's attention.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 12.3.51

kaler doṣa-nidhe rājann
asti hy ekomahānguṇaḥ
kīrtanād evakṛṣṇasya
mukta-sańgaḥparaḿvrajet

My dear King, although Kali-yuga is an ocean of faults, there is still one good quality about this age: Simply by chanting the HareKṛṣṇamahā-mantra, one can become free from material bondage and be promoted to the transcendental kingdom.
Purport:
After mentioning the innumerable faults of this age of
Kali, Śukadeva Gosvāmī now mentions its one brilliant aspect. Just as one powerful king can kill innumerable thieves, one brilliant spiritual quality can destroy all the contamination of this age. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of chanting HareKṛṣṇa, HareKṛṣṇa, KṛṣṇaKṛṣṇa, HareHare HareRāma, HareRāma, RāmaRāma, HareHare, especially in this fallen age.

Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: My first instruction to all of my disciples.....

My first instruction to all of my disciples is that they should help me spread this Krsna Consciousness movement all over the world, utilizing their energy as best they are able to do it. In this way, keeping yourselves always engaged in Krsna's business 24 hours, you will become free from all attachment to maya by Krsna's grace. Book Distribution News: My first instruction to all of my disciples.....

Just as when the darkness and the light come together, the darkness cannot stand before the light, so maya cannot remain in the presence of Krsna.
