Bhaktimarg Swami: Monday, February 15th, 2010Gurus to Consider For the last few days I have been conducting drama practices in the Samadhi Auditorium of the Mayapur Complex. After handing over scripts to those doing voices for the miming actors, I get approached by some of them, "Maharaja, could I use 'such and such' a word instead of what's in the script?" Momentarily I may experience a mental halt. The mind may say, "How dare you challenge my chosen words." As author of the script I could feel slighted by such a question. How I resolve this momentary objection is to eat some humble pie and to accept that it is all a work in progress. My business is to serve and if I ask someone to become a character and they do their job of immersing themselves, they must be gaining some realizations from the part they are speaking for. Perhaps I'm too subjective and may not always see things from the objective standpoint. When those suggestions of minor change come I am usually pushed to the truth and that's what you want to extract from the story. I may be the director of the play but behind our direction are many gurus. Mind you, anyone who does approach me for a request of change does so in a most genuine respectful way. So the pride is swallowed with some ease.

He was staggering from his mother's front end to back end and back. Still in wonder! A group of monks and I took our usual rural walk. We had stopped by Laksmi Priya, the elephant, who was wielding her trunk about. And now it was this fellow, a one-day old bull calf. The mother was proud of her new-born. Of course, he was beautiful. A Bengali brahmacari tried to come to his aid, steering him towards the udder of his mother but still no hope. One nipple was full of milk content waiting for action. Surprisingly the young bull resisted the guidance. We were scheduled to move on hoping that by a matter of minutes he would have it figured out. That was eventful. Next on the mornings' agenda was a flag-raising ceremony. Hoisted above a deity of Garuda, the man-eagle, was a long tapered red cloth that flapped in the air and marked the Gaura Purnima Festival, the golden moon Avatar festival. This year claims the five hundredth anniversary of the monastic ordaining of Chaitanya, the father of mantra chanting. It is also the anniversary of the ordaining of our guru as a monk which occurred 58 years ago. And to add to the list the festival itself which attracts pilgrims from all over the world. Unique also was the ground-breaking of what will become the largest domed temple in south-east Asia. Ambarish, also known as Alfred Ford, who told me he'll turn 60 in 2 weeks, presided over the event. This great grandson of Henry Ford was indeed happy to have begun the project. As he put it, "We're not getting any younger. The project must get underway." As the day came to a closure, I thought again about the starving calf. I do hope he succeeds in finding the source.

Satsvarupa das Goswami: 349I have seen Prabhupada break down and become unable to speak during a lecture. His voice raised very high and cracked during a lecture in Los Angeles when he was thanking the devotees for helping him serve his Guru Maharaja. In Atlanta, after visiting two Gaura-Nitai temples in Caraccas and Miami, he very much appreciated the Gaura-Nitai worship in Atlanta. He told the devotees that worship of Krishna was complete just by worshipping merciful Gaura-Nitai and then his voice cracked and he was unable to continue speaking. He also became silent in the middle of a lecture in Mayapura and everyone was quiet until Hamsadhuta Maharaja began chanting the Hare Krishna mantra and that broke up the mood and the lecture. In Los Angeles he was speaking how pure devotees serve Krishna without any reward. He said "Just like the gopis…" and then he fell silent for a long time absorbed in ecstasy. When a devotee asked Prabhupada if they had done the right thing in Mayapura to interrupt his long silence he innocently said, "I don't do that very often." • Email to a friend • Related • • Gauranga Kishore das,USA: Mortimer Adler - Superstitious Religion and True ReligionHere and there I've come accrI had come across some cool quotes from Mortimer Adler, he was a popular philosopher for much of the 20th century and wrote on a broad range of topics, and a lot about religion and atheism, and the relationship between religion, philosophy, and science. Here is an interesting quote that I think is very accurate and explains alot about people like Richard Dawkins who denouce religion on the basis of scientific evidence. The obvious response is that they clearly don't really understand the basic idea religion. I suggest that the men and women who have given up religion because of the impact on their minds of modern science and philosophy were never truly religious in the first place, but only superstitious. The prevalence and predominance of science in our culture has cured a great many of the superstitious beliefs that constituted their false religiosity. The increase of secularism and irreligion in our society does not reflect a decrease in the number of persons who are truly religious, but a decrease in the number of those who are falsely religious; that is, merely superstitious. There is no question but that science is the cure for superstition, and, if given half the chance with education, it will reduce the amount that exists. The truths of religion must be compatible with the truths of science and the truths of philosophy. As scientific knowledge advances, and as philosophical analysis improves, religion is progressively purified of the superstitions that accidentally attach themselves to it as parasites. That being so, it is easier in fact to be more truly religious today than ever before, precisely because of the advances that have been made in science and philosophy. That is to say, it is easier for those who will make the effort to think clearly in and about religion, not for those whose addiction to religion is nothing more than a slavish adherence to inherited superstition. Throughout the whole of the past, only a small number of men were ever truly religious. The vast majority who gave their epochs and their societies the appearance of being religious were primarily and essentially superstitious. I'm not sure if I agree with everything above but I like the basic point he is making. If you think that science has somehow made religious belief obsolete it means they really don't understand what religion is. Science can disprove certain superstitions about the physical world but it doesn't have anything to say about metaphysics, by definition. If your interested you can check out more essays by Mortimer Adler here. • Email to a friend • Related • • Kripamoya dasa, UK: Hindu open-air cremations to go ahead in Britain Open air cremation of the English poet Shelley (Painting by Louis Edouard Fournier 1889) I am happy to learn that after many years of repeated refusals, permission has finally been given for open-air cremations here in Britain. It means that Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Buddhists and Vaishnavas will be able to conduct funerals as per their religious requirements: outdoors and under the sky. It also means that we stand a chance in this country to look at death, rather than hiding it away – or hiding away from it. And if we do that we might begin the discussion, once again, on what comes after life. Open air cremations, where the remains of the deceased are consumed by flames from a wooden pyre, are not actually as foreign to these islands as we might think. Stonehenge certainly holds urns of cremated human remains; the Vikings were partial to setting fire to an entire ship at some funerals; the poet Shelley left orders that he was to be cremated in the open on the shore of a lake; and in 1915 no less than 53 such open cremations took place in Sussex, England. They were all Indian soldiers who had returned wounded from the European war, and died in Brighton. So the new legislation is welcome, and will be a great relief for those of us who have had to be heavily compromised whenever we perform funerals. You can read more about it here. • Email to a friend • Related • • Japa Group: You Have To Chant With QualityBhaktivinoda Thakura says if you chant and just go through the motions you're not really chanting the holy names. You have to chant with quality. So there is a difference, that I have to admit. And I know I'm not at the apex. But I chant as the ultimate habit of my life with complete obedience to the sixteen-round quota and with adherence to Prabhupada's blessing on me and my vow to him. Just go on chanting through the rest of your days and try the best you can. The development of submissiveness is the cause of proportionate spiritual realization, by which one can ultimately meet the Supreme Lord in person, as a man meets another man face to face.

His eyes are engaged in seeing the beautiful couple Śrī Rādhā and Krishna sitting on a decorated throne beneath a desire tree in the transcendental land of Vrindavana. His nose is engaged in smelling the spiritual aroma of the lotus feet of the Lord. Similarly, his ears are engaged in hearing messages from Vaikuntha, and his hands embrace the lotus feet of the Lord and His associates. Thus the Lord is manifested to a pure devotee from within and without. This is one of the mysteries of the devotional relationship in which a devotee and the Lord are bound by a tie of spontaneous love. To achieve this love should be the goal of life for every living being. • Email to a friend • Related • • Friends of the BBT: Meet the New Editor• Email to a friend • Related • • Friends of the BBT: Vanipedia—A Name You Won't Soon Forget• Email to a friend • Related • • Friends of the BBT: Amplifiers, Adrenaline and an Arsenal of Bhagavad-gitas: The Warped Tour Book Distribution Team• Email to a friend • Related • • Srila Prabhupada's Letters1966 February 16: "America is very much expensive. He recalls an interesting experience about distributing a Srimad Bhagvatam set: I met a Gujarati man travelling with his 18 year old son. I offered them a book and the son took one English Bhagavad-gita. I offered the elderly man Srimad Bhagvatam. "No, thanks," he said. I took his number and decided to follow-up. For three days, he kept on saying no. Then I said, "I will come to your house and show you the set." I went to his house. The wife and son were out. I gave a lecture for half and hour, after which he seemed convinced. Just when I thought that he was going to take the set, he dropped a bombshell. "I will ask my wife." "Oh, no!" I thought. "It took me half an hour to convince this man by showing him the whole set. What will the wife say, when she doesn't know anything about glories of Srimad Bhagvatam?" I knew the answer. Yet while he was making the phone call, I prayed intensely to the Lord. He returned, and even before he opened his mouth, I knew the verdict of the wife,"No." But I was not going to give up so easily. Again, I preached to him for half and hour and then I asked. "How long have you been married?" "20 years." "Did you, in these 20 years, ever do anything which your wife had asked you not to do?" "Yes, off course." "How many times?' "Many times." "Please do it one more time. This is your decision. I am sure you will be able to convince her." Meat-free diets not good? 2 days ago, I saw the below article in all leading newspapers in India : Meat-free diets not good for planet: Scientists Giving up meat may not be as green as it seems, claims a new research that could put a dent in the green credentials of vegetarians and environmental activists. The Cranfield University study found that switching from beef and lamb to meat substitutes such as tofu and Quorn in Britain would increase the amount of land cultivated, raising the risk of forests being destroyed. Production methods for meat substitutes can be energy intensive and the final products tend to be highly processed, found the research, commissioned by the environmental group WWF, the Daily Mail reported. According to the researchers, “A switch from beef and milk to highly refined livestock product analogues such as tofu could actually increase the quantity of arable land needed to supply the UK.” Donal Murphy-Bokern, one of the report's authors and a former co-ordinator at the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said: “For some people, tofu and other meat substitutes symbolise environmental friendliness but they are not necessarily the badge of merit that people claim.” But Liz O'Neill, of the Vegetarian Society, said: “If you're aiming to reduce your environmental impact by going vegetarian then it's obviously not a great idea to rely on highly-processed products.” And what did I feel after reading this article? I felt like saying to them, “Prove it ! Give us a chance to run the earth on vegetarian diet completely and let’s see if there are any environmental damages. You have all the data in the world to show that Non-Veg diet has caused environmental issues. Now, instead of speculating that veg diet may not be a friendly solution, why don’t you do an experiment and come to a conclusion? Stop the animal killing fully and plant more trees, plants and crops. Conduct the experient for 25 years. Let’s scientifically analyze the results.” They won’t…would they? • Email to a friend • Related • • More Recent Articles
