Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: "Do something new," and "Why change?"

As soon as one is in charge, immediately he invents something new: "This should be broken, and this should be done." Then another man comes. He breaks the same thing again. There are practical experience I have got. Unless there is control over the mind it will dictate something new. "Do it like this." There was a Bengali poet. He also sung a song, ek ta nutana kichu koro(?): "Do something new." This is mind's business. He is not satisfied with the old things. Nutana kichu koro. So that's a very big song. Why change? The whole material world is like that. Ei nutana kichu koro: "Do something new," and be implicated. We are not satisfied with old things. "Old order changes, yields to... Old order... There is an English proverb like that, "yielding to the new." But the Vedic civilization is that "Do not try to invent some order. That will create disturbance. Be satisfied. 761126SB.VRN

      Ravi prabhu remembers:
Prabhu has always been so kind to me. I remember last year at Gaura Purnima time, sitting with him next to Tulsi down beside the Ganges and just taking in the environment. He was quiet, thinking...then he said 'do you see that boat there, what stops it from going away?' 'It is the anchor' he said, you have to find something spiritual/devotional that you do every day, that nothing can stop you from doing, that becomes part of your existence so much that that habit will continue into your next life'
Such a nice memory. I will miss him dearly, he is a great devotee and a friend.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: '430' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

4:10 A.M.

We found out that Nitai Gaurasundara's family was safe from the flooding in Tennessee. Just as with the previous tornadoes in that area they were untouched by the flood also.

Last night on going to bed I had a migraine headache and had to take medicine. They're coming frequently and the men think that I may be in anxiety over some issue. I woke up in the middle of the night with another headache but got back to sleep. I got out of bed at 1:30 and began my chanting. I chanted awake and alert. I've chanted fourteen rounds. My chanting was not very prayerful however. I mechanically uttered the syllables of the mantra and kept count of the quota. It is a routine kind of chanting with no big distractions but no deep meditations on Nama Prabhu and Radha-Krishna. This has been my fate for some while and I find it hard to improve. It just takes a great deal of presence of mind. You have to think of what you're doing and be aware of the momentousness of the simple practice. Don't take it for granted or do it just as a matter of daily habit. The best part is that I chant with consciousness of keeping up the count in a rapid way but that is not enough.

Keeping your quota,
using the precious moments
to chant the holy names
and count them carefully.
It is not the chanting
of the previous acaryas
who felt bodily transformations
and symptoms of ecstasy
by uttering the names.
You relax and count,
108 per round and
then move to the next
then move on to the next.
It is mechanical japa,
like driving down the highway,
being mindful of safe
accumulation but not
concentrating with devotion
on the words that are
actually Krishna Himself.
Become aware and return
to it with fervor,
it is not so hard to do
if you make the effort,
turn within and cry out.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'In Paris, France 1974' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Prabhupada Smaranam

This is the Paris temple in 1974 and Prabhupada is allowing me to be the priest of an initiation ceremony. The paraphernalia is all set out and the yajna has yet to begin. I will have to set out burning incense sticks and then start a fire on the sand mound with sticks from the box. It is a privilege and humble duty to be the priest for Prabhupada, who is actually making the initiations. In his lecture Prabhupada mentioned that I wrote in a BTG article the example of the wedding party who rowed their boat all night but made no progress because the anchor was down. I was thrilled that he referred to my article which was, after all, just a repetition of what I had heard from him. Krishna conscious ceremonies are elaborate and enjoyable. They have to be conducted in an exact certain way. I was a little nervous to do it in front of Prabhupada but had experience in conducting the fire ceremony so I was pretty confident that I'd be able to do it without mistakes, as long as the wood was dry. At least I didn't have to give the lecture, which was conducted by His Divine Grace. He was relaxed on his vyasasana, not uncomfortable about the fact that he was making a whirlwind tour through various European countries.

He controlled the situation and all the devotees in the room. He was in fairly good health, and enlivened to be preaching in Europe, having meetings with Christian priests and dignitaries and seeing the progress in his various temples. It was a good time in his life. I was being honored as his personal servant, although I was restless in my service. To look at the scene now brings fond memories of a time I was actively and personally engaged in his service and fully under his protection. The temple room was packed with happy devotees, thrilled to be in the presence of Srila Prabhupada, especially those devotees who are about to be initiated.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Where Am I' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

You've established that
a poem must be about
Krishna but also lively
and spiced with your actual
life and the wordplay to
make it entertaining.

But how do you do that?
Do you say "I see the hat
symbol for Arby's" and
then recite a verse from Bhagavad–
gita
? All these things go together.

I have to go to the doctor again
today, twice, to find out if
I'm benign or "positive",
chances are I'm still okay at
seventy and a half.

You should be entering more
deeply into Krishna links
and seeking His protection
but you don't. You live
as though you'll never die,
just another day, a plan
to move to New York.

Scott LaFaro plucks his
bass in the Bill Evans
Trio. The famous renderings
at the Village Vanguard ended
and he died a week later, his
double bass a charred
ruin in a car accident.

That was decades ago and some
of us survived but our time
will come too. That's why
we should pray to Krishna,
ask Him to take us to His
abode in the spiritual sky.

You have to dedicate yourself
to His mission, to His commands
and vows. You need
to get to know Him
although He is aprakrta.
You need to see and know Him,
the one who can't be seen
by mortal eyes.

I'm just an ordinary bloke
but gifted by connection to
the mahatma, Prabhupada. He
trusted you with heavy duties which you
filled out with all the verve
you could muster. Now you are
slower but your time is getting
short. Oh can something
happen to move me to
his lotus feet?

Can I tell you my heart
is welded to his in
a way unknown to me?
Can I reach him before
it's too late? I'm just an ordinary bloke
but I've had chances to
serve him closely in
the past. The present seems
to be wearing out and I
am not improving. I'm just moving along
at home, at the right address, but not doing anything.
This is the most miserable condition
I can imagine if it's
true.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'The Love of Dog…' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Free Write

The owner of these two little dogs has attired them in jackets to protect them from the snow bordered cold. They are crossing the road on long leashes. Humans sometimes excessively coddle their pets and treat them almost like human children. People have been known to leave large sums of money to their pets in their Wills and to bury their pets in coffins with large tombstones. Too much affection and attention to a subhuman pet could have serious effects on the pet owners. A person who dies thinking finally of his pet dog could take his next birth in the dog species. Bhagavad-gita confirms "Whatever one thinks of at the time of death, one attains that state without fail." This verse occurs in the eighth chapter where thinking of Krishna at the time of death is recommended. "He who meditates on Me as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, his mind constantly engaged in remembering Me, undeviated from the path, oh Partha, is sure to reach Me." (Bhagavad-gita 8.8) In the purport to this verse Prabhupada writes "The mind is fickle, and therefore, it is necessary to engage the mind by force to think of Krishna. One example often given is that of the caterpillar that thinks of becoming a butterfly and is transformed into a butterfly in the same life."

In the fifth canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam, the unfortunate transmigration of Bharata Maharaja is described. Maharaja Bharata went to the forest and was practicing severe penance and almost attained the state of bhava, prior to krsna-prema. But he became attached to a fawn and was thinking of the fawn when he died. In his next life Maharaja Bharata had to take the birth of a stag. Gosvamis in Vrndavana who fall down in spiritual life and take to illicit sex and intoxication have to take one more birth in Vrndavana in the species of hogs or monkeys before they are liberated. Lord Rsabhadeva teaches his sons that they should strive to save their offspring from the cycle of birth and death. It is very difficult to control the destiny of an adult human being but parents at least should try their best to raise their children as devotees and fulfill the responsibility of parenthood.

By giving up hope of delivering one's children in Krishna consciousness and coddling animals instead, one runs the risk of entering the species of the loved ones on whom one meditates.

Japa Group: Depending On The Lord

Today this came into my mind before I began chanting Japa....we express our devotion to Krsna through our chanting of the Holy names, and also through our dependence on the Lord. Krsna wants to see this from us, that we depend on Him for everything in our lives - to have this vision requires purification and that purification comes from good quality chanting.

When we can realise that everything comes by the mercy of the Lord and that we just have to ask for help through prayer...including the Maha mantra which is a prayer for service.

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: Making ISKCON Temples Eco-Friendly

Making ISKCON Temples Eco-Friendly By Nirguna dasi

His Holiness Bhakti Rasamrita Swami (previously H. G.Devamrita Das) spoke this past month at the ICC meetings (a Conference of ISKCON leaders) about the need for ISKCON temples and projects, in India, to consider implementing environment friendly standards.
Maharaj feels that Nature, as much as everything else, belongs to Krishna. As devotees, we should try in every way to counter or at least not add to the present environmental degradation.
Maharaj has surmised his ideas for ISKCON temples to adopt in the paper posted below.
Making ISKCON Temples Eco-Friendly
As a well-known and world-wide spiritual institution with a large member of followers, ISKCON is aware of its responsibility to the environment. In pursuance of this responsibility, we wish to formulate strategies for a step-by-step progression in the level of eco-friendliness of our Temples and other projects in India, leading to the setting up of practical standards of compliance. The culmination of course, will be "Green Temples". Participation or suggestions from temples and projects outside India are most welcome.
In considering eco-friendliness, the following would need to be considered:
1.MATERIALS:
(For construction, interiors, kitchen and other equipment, packing and storage, stationery, clothing and other personal effects etc.)
2.ENERGY:
(For lighting, heating, cooking, transportation, domestic and other appliances, etc.)
3.WATER:
(Conservation, Recycling, Harvesting rain-water)
4.METHODS:
(For conserving water or for cooking, or for saving energy or for building structures and so on.)

5.WASTE MANAGEMENT:
(For solid and liquid waste)
6.FOOD:
(e.g. Organic foods, cooking mediums, utensils, fuels, packed foods, preferred and avoidable types of food, etc.)
7. TREES/GREENERY:
(For different purposes. Encouraging the use of plants indigenous to the local or geographical region.)
8.HEALTH:
(Being aware of health hazards of eco-unfriendly practices)

9.AUDIT:
(Current levels of usage vs ideal standards)
10.CREATING AWARENESS:
(Educating devotees about the need for being more eco-friendly)

These proposals are not intended to be compulsory requirements. Nevertheless, we urge all our temples and projects to follow certain minimum standards of compliance. We highly encourage and if possible will reward movement up the scale to higher standards of eco-friendliness. It will be left to the inspiration and motivation of individual Temples to adopt the standard.
Therefore, we wish to set up practically do-able, relatively simple, cost-effective and reviewable standards. This will be a basic list of do's and don'ts of sorts.
We propose that this be done in FIVE LEVELS.
Level One will be the bare minimum standard that we expect every Temple to follow. This should be very easy to implement. (For e.g. Not using plastic bags, cups and glasses, conserving water etc.)
Level Five will be the highest standard. This would qualify for a genuinely "Green Temple" status in an urban setting.
There could be Level Six and Seven, it possible, for projects in rural areas, where higher standards are feasible.
We do not, as a rule, intend to obtain Eco-Friendly Certification from well known external institutions. (Of course, individual Temples may do so, if they wish). The certification that we intend for our Temples is our internal certification
Anyone interested in contributing their time and efforts, providing information or expertise are encouraged to please assist in this project. If anyone is, or knows of environment experts who may be able to help with a blueprint for an eco friendly or Green Temple, please do contact me:

Thank you.

H.H. Sivarama Swami

I understand that some of our householder devotees are ordering for Deities in India. But here is the point. The point is that they “worship strictly, following the direction and
regulation of arcana-vidhi.” Don’t make a play. If you follow strictly the Deity worship method, then you establish; otherwise, don’t establish.
