WHO: ISKCON Berkeley WHAT: San Francisco's Ratha Yatra Festival WHERE: Golden Gate Park, Sharon Meadows WHEN: Sunday August 8th 2010, 11AM-5PM Palace of Gold in Graffiti (WV newspaper)Best WV daytripsJune 30, 2010 I’ve been greedily hoarding books, pamphlets and other things that boast of West Virginia’s scenery and notable attractions, thinking that when I have enough money I’ll start nosing around statewide. Then someone asked for ideas for day trips here in the Mountain State, so I hastily copied over a few.
If you’re within a couple of hours from these places, hopefully one will present something new, and maybe you’ll be a little bit prouder of West Virginia too. Prabhupada’s Palace of Gold (Northern Panhandle) A handful of miles outside of Wheeling sits Prabhupada’s Palace of Gold, a massive, exquisitely ornamented Krishna Consciousness compound. You really have to visit this place (or at least go to www.palaceofgold.com) to get just how boggling its opulence is. Built to honor Srila Prabhupada, founder of the Krishna Consciousness, it houses adherents to the faith but also welcomes visitors to share its artistic and spiritual splendor. And they have West Virginia’s only resident elephant. Washington Heritage Trail (Eastern Panhandle) The Washington Heritage Trail is 136 miles of the Eastern Panhandle put into cultural and natural context for curious visitors. Granted, it could take you more than a day to soak up everything available. Luckily, the trail has been conveniently broken up by location and topic, so whether you’re a Civil War buff, an avid hiker, an arts and crafts enthusiast, or something else entirely, you will have no trouble picking from dozens of activities to pack a day totally full of fun. So after an ecstatic Rathayatra the pots and pans started to rattle again, this time for prasad distribution to the masses of people who stay up all night in order to cheer in the sunrise at Stonehenge. The “English heritage” maintain this ancient monument and each year they invite “Food For All” to attend and supply breakfast for one and all. In fact we are the only group invited. There is no live bands, no P. A. systems, no entertainment, it is an ideal opportunity to deliver our ancient knowledge in this ancient mystical place. The Prasad distribution started at 1am and finished by 8am, and the harinam party chanted all night led by HH Mahavishnu Swami. The first part of the movie is a bit dark but will lighten up. European Brahmacari Convention 2010By Sutapa Dasa Think of the Hare Krishna movement, and one of the first images that comes to mind is a group of bright-faced young men with freshly shaven heads, swaying in saffron robes to the sounds of drums and hand cymbals. It’s hard to forget. In the late 1960s and ’70s, inspired by the dedication and devotion of Srila Prabhupada, thousands of young men dedicated themselves to the brahmacari asrama, a monastic life of selfless service. Although ISKCON’s demographics have considerably changed since then, with householder devotees now far outnumbering brahmacaris, the importance and value of ISKCON’s monastic orders should never be minimized. Numerous precepts about brahmacarya, celibacy for the sake of spiritual advancement, are contained in the books, lectures, and correspondence of Srila Prabhupada. These indicate that brahmacarya is the basis of the three other asramas, or spiritual stages of life, and must be practiced by anyone serious and sincere about making tangible spiritual progress. A brahmacari asrama serves the interests of the larger community, because strong training in brahmacarya helps form ideal householders. Srimad-Bhagavatam explains, “There is no possibility of controlling the mind and senses without following the principles of brahmacarya.” So it is extremely important to revive and maintain the spirit and unity among brahmacaris, who now (outside of India) are a diminished asrama in ISKCON. With all these purposes in mind, nearly eighty brahmacaris gathered at Bhaktivedanta Manor in late July for the second annual European Brahmacari Convention, the theme of which was “Reviving, Uniting and Empowering.” The two main aspects of the convention were: 1) enhancing the personal lives of brahmacaris 2) enhancing our communities of brahmacaris This year’s seminars: Loving Relationships by H. Lively morning kirtans revived memories of the times when all the ISKCON temples were bursting with enthusiastic brahmacaris. This gives us great hope that the increased presence of brahmacaris in all the European temples will ensure a bright future for Europe’s ISKCON communities. pics: By Sutapa Dasa Think of the Hare Krishna movement, and one of the first images that comes to mind is a group of bright-faced young men with freshly shaven heads, swaying in saffron robes to the sounds of drums and hand cymbals. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. I hope everyone is inspired by the transcendental words of Krsna and Prabhupada to distribute their message far and wide. Vrndavana had a great month of May, racking up over 11,000 book points and more than doubling the total for the same month last year. Pancagauda Prabhu is now the temple president of this holy place, and it looks as though he is giving some inspiration in the direction of book distribution. My sankirtana leader when I joined in 1978, he is an expert book distributor and a good friend. Catania, Italy, also had a great month, with a 112% increase over May of last year with more than 14,000 book points. Also, the top ten book distributors in Europe were all from Italy! They set a great example for the rest of the world with their steadiness and large book scores. I was recently in Canada, here’s a couple of stories for your pleasure. When distributing in Vancouver recently, I approached a man with his teenage son and his eleven-year-old daughter. As I was showing him the Bhagavad-gita he said to me, “Jehovah’s Witness?” “No, Hare Krsna.” “Oh, Hare Krsna.” After showing the book to them I said, “We just ask for a donation for it.” The little girl then grabbed the book and said, “Father, I want this book.” “Are you sure you’re going to read it?” “Yes, father, it’s beautiful.” I said to the father, “You have a very intelligent daughter. Nowadays not many people are philosophically inclined, what to speak of eleven-year-old girls.” He gave a nice donation, and the family walked away with Krsna putting them on their path to enter into their eternal family in the spiritual world. Later while I was in Toronto I heard of a very interesting way one of the devotees their came to Krsna consciousness: Rafael Abdula was born into a family in which his mother was Hindu and his father was Muslim. When the family moved to the USA, both his parents, amazingly, became Mormons. When he reached his teens he asked them questions about God that they couldn’t answer. He became an atheist. When he was in Venezuela he met a devotee who asked him if he knew about Krsna. Rafael replied that he’d never heard of Him. (Although his mother had been a Hindu, she had only spoken about Siva and Ganesh before she turned to Mormonism.) He took a book from her to find out about Krsna, and she took his e-mail and phone number. She kept in touch with him. Once she called and taught him the Hare Krsna mantra, which brought him a little closer to Krsna. Later he was at a bookstore when a man standing next to him who didn’t work at the store and who he’d never seen before picked up a /Prabhupada Lilamrta/ and asked, “Are you interested in this?” Rafael replied, “Yes, this may be interesting.” He bought it, took it home, and found that it was the best book he’d ever read. A short time later he was in Trinidad and met more devotees. They invited him to the temple, which he appreciated and returned to every Sunday. Eventually became a disciple of Guru Prasada Swami. His name is now Raghavendra dasa, and he lives and serves in Toronto. This shows how the transcendental team of Krsna and his devotees gradually pull in the conditioned souls to His shelter.
