Glorious Passing Away Of Mother Lalasa-mayi

Dear Maharajas and Prabhus, Please accept my humble obeisances All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Last night at 00H15 our dear Godsister, Mother Lalasa-mayi, left her body and apparently made it back home back to Godhead. Lalasa-mayi Mataji who had joined Iskcon in 1983 at the age of sixty years, was spending her last days in her home near the Belgian Radhadesh community. Because of her advanced age, physically things became more and more difficult untill two weeks ago she made her last visit to the templeroom of Sri Sri Radha Gopinatha.

Around 19h00 yesterday evening, one of the two professional nurses who daily took care of Mother Lalasa-mayi, announced that now the end is approaching. The nurse refused to take her to the hospital, commenting :”Let her pass away with those people here, that is what she wants”. Around 19h30 Yadurani Mataji stayed alone with Mother Lalasa-mayi. “Are we alone ?” Mother Lalasa-mayi asked. “Yes,” Yadurani answered, “I will stay with you during the night”. “Yes, I know,” Lalasa-mayi answered.

At around 20H00 yesterday evening, Lalasa-mayi requested Yadurani to show her the computerized daily darshan pictures of Sri Sri Radha Gopinatha. Yadurani Mataji opened the picture and showed it to Lalasa-mayi asking her what exactly she wanted to see. “I want to see the lotusfeet of Sri Sri Radha Gopinatha,” Lalasa-mayi answered. Yadurani showed it. “I don’t see anything”, Lalasa-mayi replied.

Mother Lalasa-mayi looked very tired and Yadurani asked her whether she was going to sleep. “No,” Lalasa-mayi answered. “Are we alone here ?” Lalasa-mayi asked again, “There is nobody else ?”

The room was rather darkened with a dim light and after some time Lalasa-mayi started to look around everywhere. “There is such brilliant light here,” she said. Then she looked into the corner on the right side from her bed and she tried to reach out with her hand as if she wanted to grasp. “You see something,” Mother Yadurani asked. Is someone there ? “Yes,” she said, “don’t you see, “It is Krishna”. “Is someone else there ? Yadurani asked. “Yes,” Mother Lalasa-mayi said, “Nanda Maharaja”…. “And Mother Yasoda. Come you. Don’t you see. Come, I will show you. Come with me. Come with me. I will show you.” Mother Lalasa-mayi was speaking a lot now and Yadurani could not understand everything. “Is it very beautiful ?” Yadurani asked. “Yes” Lalasa-mayi replied. “Are you happy, Lalasa-mayi ?” Now Lalasa-mayi put a very big, amazingly beautiful smile. “When are you going there ?” Yadurani asked her. “Tomorrow” Lalasa-mayi replied. “Don’t wait anymore, Krishna is waiting for you” Yadurani said, “He has been waiting for you since so long now, don’t wait anymore.” Again she began to look around and pointing out in the room. Lalasa-mayi again said “You have to come with me”. “Ok, I will come with you,” Yadurani now replied. Then Mother Lalasa-mayi said : “I want to go back home, now.” After that she started to withdraw from external consciousness, she breathed with difficulty. She was asking to drink but when she was given some water she refused it. This went on for about three hours.

When Yadurani saw that the end was getting closer she called the neighbouring devotee. In no time Mother Lalasa-mayi’s house became filled with Radhadesh devotees and college students who began to perform beautiful and very sweet bhajan. Many devotees visited and finally at 00h15, looking completely peaceful, fearless and detached, Mother Lalasa-mayi left her body.

After a sankirtan devotee had visited her home in Flanders in 1983 and sold her Srila Prabhupada’s Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Mother Lalasa-mayi, at the age of sixty years that time, had joined Iskcon instantly, leaving behind everything. “I always said it was a very good investment,” she used to comment later on.

Until about the age of 70 Mother Lalasa-mayi was going out on Sankirtan, selling all types of paraphernalia and collecting for the Radhadesh community. Together with Mother Vinode Manjari, they were at that time for a major part practically maintaining the whole of Radhadesh. Mother Lalasa-mayi was also involved as a pujari, cooking for Sri Sri Radha Gopinatha, Sri Sri Jagannatha, Baladeva and Subhadra and Sri Sri Gaura Nitai.

Lalasa-mayi was very expert in her service. Even when her spiritual master, His Holiness Bhakti Caru Swami, visited Radhadesh in 2008, he mentioned how Mother Lalasa-mayi gave him a big donation. It was very obvious how deeply moved and pleased he was with her and he wanted her to be taken care of as nice as possible. “You have served Krishna so much and for such a long time, now that your body has become weak, we have to take care of you,” Maharaja expressed. And together with the daily professional nurse care, several Radhadesh devotees have gone out of their way to visit, cook for Lalasa-mayi and give her personal association for the last few years. Recently devotees took very lovingly care of Mother Lalasa-mayi for twenty four hours a day.

A little anecdote from Yadurani Mataji shows how eager Mother Lalasa-mayi was to hear about Krishna. Few days ago Mother Yadurani read a story from Chaitanya Bhagavata to Mother Lalasa-mayi. In the story non devotees were mocking the devotees, mentioning how they are always crying for their Lord and see the result.. The devotees are such poor people etc. While Yadurani read the story, Mother Lalasa-mayi seemed to be fast asleep. Yadurani wanted to check whether she was really sleeping and she said “It is true, Lalasa-mayi, is it not ?” Lalasa-mayi immediately opened her eyes widely. “Nooo..,” Lalasa-mayi riposted, as if trying to defend the position of the Lord and His devotees.

All glories to Mother Lalasa-mayi! All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga! All glories to Srila Prabhupada! Hare Krishna

Dearest Friends, Family and Beloved Ones,

I first want to express my deep gratitude for the outpouring of love and support through calls, emails, gifts and cards that I have received from so many of you around the planet. You have touched my soul and have given me strength to know how much I am loved! I am very sorry that I have not been able to talk to or see more of you personally, but I feel your support.

At this time I ask that your prayers be focused on helping me to have faith, courage and experience the highest Prema Bhakti. As you pray for me, I invite you to allow the power of divine prayer into your hearts as well and let your path to be enlightened through the medium of prayer and devotional Kirtan.

My mother and brother are arriving from Germany on Tuesday (12/22) and I am blessed to have time to share love with them. My energy is very limited so I will not be able to see anyone else during this time, but please know that your love is felt and appreciated. Thank you for understanding.

May Lord Caitanya continue to dance in my heart and may Krisna’s flute bring sweetness to my ears.

With love and deep gratitude,

Yours always,

Rasa
