There is no doubt about it. Not only is pure devotional service the ultimate nectar. It is also the only nectar. These word may seem exaggerated or fanatical. But for someone who has actually fully tasted the ultimate nectar of pure devotional service they are a scientific reality. If you want to verify the truth or untruth of what I am saying, there...

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Laksmana Watch! Where is Hanumana?

For those who attended Rama Navami celebrations (marking the appearance anniversary of Lord Rama), we saw how in the middle of the celebrations, a battle broke out between Laksmana and Indrajit! In this battle, Laksmana was struck with an arrow and fell unconscious! We are all awaiting Hanumana to come save the day (word has it, that he will arrive on Sunday). But until then, we encourage you to keep an eye on Lord Laksmana to ensure that he is ok!

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Celebrating Lord Ramacandra in a Big Way... All the Way to Sunday!

The Toronto Hare Krishna Centre is excited to announce that festivities surrounding Lord Ramacandra's Appearance will be celebrated in grand fashion! Lord Rama is the incarnation of Lord Krishna as the perfect monarch. He enacted His lila, or pastime, of killing the evil king Ravana and establishing virtue, by personal example, throughout His kingdom. The epic story of His transcendental adventures is told in the scripture Ramayana in which one reads of His unfailing devotion to His wife Sita and Their affectionate dealings with Lord Rama's many family members, particularly His devoted Brother, Laksmana.

Festivities will begin tonight at the Hare Krishna Temple at 6:00pm. The schedule is as follows (subject to change):
6:00pm to 6:30pm - Kirtan
6:30pm to 6:40pm - Welcome and Announcements
6:40pm to 7:30pm - Class by Rupanuga das
7:30pm to 7:45pm - Arati to Lord Ramacandra
7:45pm to 8:00pm - Nama Yajna
8:00pm to 8:30pm - Kirtan
8:30pm - Vegetarian Feast (Prasadam) Served in Monkey-Fashion!

Celebrations will continue this upcoming Sunday, March 28th but we have decided that why let the days go by without celebrating Lord Ramacandra's appearance?!? So, as a new initiative, we will be hosting telephone conference-calls on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings! Each call will focus on a different personality from the Ramayana and also feature a practical take-home message that can help us in our Krishna consciousness. We are excited to announce that we have some very special guests who will be facilitating these calls! The details are as follows:

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Dvarakadhisa sends Srila Prabhupada to India

(Srila Prabhupada relates how he planned to stay in America, but Krsna had another plan: that Srila Prabhupada establish a superb temple in Vrndavana. That temple was opened on Ramanavami 1975.)

Prabhupada: That means Krsna desired. Otherwise I had no plan to come back here. Tamala Krsna: Your business was in the West. Still it is, you said. Still, whatever we're doing here... Prabhupada: Therefore I took this permanent residency. Tamala Krsna: Not intention but... Do you regret having come back to India? Prabhupada: No, it is well. My plan was like that, but Krsna's plan was different. When I was coming back, I was speaking to Dvarakadhisa [the Deity in ISKCON LA], "I do not know. I came here to live. Why You are driving me away?" While leaving Los Angeles I was not happy. Tamala Krsna: Oh, I remember. Prabhupada: But He had this plan. Tamala Krsna: Pretty nice plan. Prabhupada: Krsna wanted that "You left Vrndavana. I'll give you better place in Vrndavana. (chuckles) You were retired in Vrndavana. I obliged you to leave. Now you come back. I'll give you better place." So He has given a temple hundred times better than Los Angeles. Is it not? Tamala Krsna: There's nothing comparable in the three worlds. Prabhupada: Hm. So it is always by His desire.

Sita-pati dasa, AU: Excerpts from Drucker's "Managing the Non-Profit Organization" Part 1

(As well as focusing on addressing a real need in the community)... We need to be results-driven. We need to ask, Do we get adequate results for our efforts? Is this their best allocation? Yes, need is always a reason, but by itself it is not enough. There also have to be results. There also has to be something to point at and say, We have not worked in vain. So we are always looking at projects and programmes with the question, Do they produce the right results? The leader's job is to make sure the right results are being achieved, the right things are being done.

One has the responsibility to allocate resources, particularly of course in organizations that depend heavily on volunteers, and heavily on donors. Leadership is accountable for results. And leadership always asks, Are we faithful stewards of the talents entrusted us? The talents, the gifts of people - the talents, the gift of money. Leadership is *doing*. It isn't just thinking great thoughts; it isn't just charisma; it isn't play-acting. It is doing. And the first imperative of doing is to revise the mission, to refocus it, and to build and to organize, and then abandon. It is asking ourselves whether, knowing what we now know, we would go into this again. Would we stress it? Would we pour more resources in, or would we taper off? That is the first action command for any mission.

It is also one way of keeping an organization lean and hungry and capable of doing new things. An old medical proverb says that the body can only take in the new if it eliminates the waste products. This is therefore the first action requirement: the constant resharpening, the constant refocusing, never really being satisfied. And the time to do this is when you are successful. If you wait until things have already started to go down, then it's very difficult. It is not impossible to turn around a declining institution, but an ounce of prevention is very much better than a ton of cure in the turnaround situation.

- Managing the Non-Profit Organization, Peter Drucker, p.34-35

Anyone else up for a ton of work?

Japa Group: We Should Enunciate Clearly

When we chant, we should enunciate clearly. If we are speaking to some important man, we take it as an important occasion; we don’t mumble to him. “What are you saying?” So similarly, Krsna knows what you are saying, what you are thinking. As we are offering the name, the sound vibration, He knows His name, and He has many people glorifying Him already. But He will be pleased if you also glorify Him. So it should be done like that.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: '385' from The Yellow Submarine

Chanting out of place,
but tell yourself to go
ahead and hear the holy names.
There is nothing foreign
about Trinidad, it’s just
another land on Your planet.
And I don’t really belong
anywhere here.

I have lived in many places
and always chanted japa, so
I can do it here. I just
have to concentrate my mind.

The words are universal and
the call can be made from
anyplace where there is
an earnest heart and work
to try. As for You, Nama
Prabhu, You have always existed
in all places, even in hell
and heaven, so You are ready
to rescue me when I call to You.
Please help me sunk my
presence into Your syllables.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Mexican Pastimes of His Divine Grace' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Prabhupada Smaranam

These are picture of Prabhupada in Mexico in 1975. He visited twice, once in 1972 when Citsukhananda was in charge and once (shown here) in 1975 when Hridayananda Maharaja was in charge.

During his 1972 visit, an extraordinary thing happened. On a Sunday afternoon there were more than five hundred people gathered in the temple room. After the lecture Prabhupada went back to his room alone and there was a big kirtana with people chanting “Jaya Prabhupada! Jaya Prabhupada!” Prabhupada was in his room and asked “What is this? Kirtana? They are making so much noise.”

Citsukhananda said that they are chanting your name, Prabhupada, and he went outside to see what was going on. All the people were waiting to come into Prabhupada’s room it was as if they wanted to charge up to his room to be able to see him, and they kept chanting his name. Prabhupada said “Well let them come.”

And so Citsukhananda arranged that the people could come in. Prabhupada had two doors in his room and they were coming in through one door on the left side and leaving through the door on the right. One by one, in a line, they’d just filtered through like a great parade coming and offering different words to Srila Prabhupada. Most of the people were saying in Spanish, “Your Divine Grace, Your Holiness, please bless me. Please give me your benediction.” Everyone was praying for his benediction. And as the people would come in they would bow down. Everyone was submissive, and there were many people with tears in their eyes to see the great saint, Srila Prabhupada. Prabhupada had his hand in his bead bag and with his finger outside his bead bag he would point to them and say “Hare Krishna,” and they were all very happy. Prabhupada had a very busy preaching program in Mexico in 1972. He lectured at three different locations in one day.

He’d head back to his room in the temple at about 8:00 P.M., and from eight in the morning until eight at night he had not taken a bite of food only a little water. The devotees had offered him fruit and things, but he didn’t want anything. When he returned to his room his eyes were shining and his smile was broad and he said “This is the way to be happy. Work all day for Krishna.” All he wanted was a cup of hot milk with puris and a cup of sugar. He pressed the puris into the sugar, and he drank the milk with great joy and happiness. He said, “This is our life, to serve Krishna. Work all day for Krishna, and take a little prasadam at night.”

Prabhupada held initiations at the temple on consecutive days during both years that he visited. He said Mexico was similar to India with pious people and a tropical climate. Even when he walked early in the morning in the park, many people followed him back to the temple. They recognized him as a saint and wanted his benediction.

Hridayananda Goswami had organized a Spanish BBT in Mexico, and had made book distribution it’s priority. Early in 1974 when the first Spanish BBT was ready to print translations of Srimad-Bhagavatam’s first volume, Bhagavad-gita and Krishna: The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Prabhupada wrote “By printing these books of our Krishna conscious philosophy in so many different languages, we can actually inject our movement into the masses of persons all over the world especially there in the western countries, and we can literally turn whole nations into Krishna conscious nations. When one hundred thousand copies of the Spanish Back to Godhead were printed, Prabhupada wrote, “Now give them to everyone.” Spanish book distribution became the second largest in the world, next to American.

Well, its been a long cold period here in England, but finally the sun seems to be staying and the warmer weather is bringing out the spring flowers. Some of us we’re beginning to wonder whether it would ever happen.

I have been using whatever flowers the locality provides for my daily puja, and it has been quite sparse. Snowdrops came out a few weeks ago, and then there’s been winter pansies, and some glorious light-yellow primroses. But I also managed to find a mahonia bush in a deserted house which was very helpful. For a few days the ‘lamb’s tails’ of the hazel tree were very helpful.

Some kind but anonymous soul, perhaps after reading my last piece about the sparsity of winter flowers, arranged for a big bunch of multi-coloured carnations to be mailed to me from the warmer UK Channel Islands. They grow a lot of flowers over there as the place is always warmer than the mainland, being off the coast of France. So whoever you are, may Lord Krishna bless you for your thoughtfulness and generosity.

About ten days ago, the crocuses came out with their purple bulb-shapes. They are colourful but very delicate, so if I pick them I have to return home soon afterwards. The camelia bush in my garden has just started to blossom with one bright red flower, and the brilliantly yellow daffodils seem to be popping up everywhere, along with their small lookalikes, the narcissus variation known as the tete-a-tete.

For those of you with a passing interest in us florally-challenged English, here are a few pictures:

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Dear Lord Krishna' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Dear Lord Krishna, my
spiritual beloved. I
know You love me in my heart,
and I wish I felt Your
presence more.

You call out to me all the
time asking me to concentrate
on You, but I remain
distracted with bodily
and schedule concerns.

I should know You are
with me in any country
of the world, even in a
little room that’s too
cold with air conditioning,
and the men are still sleeping.

Nothing matters but my
devotion to You. I will
try to keep up my good
cheer while I am in the
Caribbean and be social and tell people
about You and Prabhupada.

Please let me perform
as a regular sannyasi
not a television actor
“Monk” or even Thelonious
Monk. I am a saffron–
clad ISKCON representative
with people who expect me
to talk about You
in parampara and well
composed.

Please preserve me
from being annoyed
by inconveniences and boredom
and being out of my
usual place. Show me
I’m with You in the
place that is permeated
with You. Let my human
heart stay in touch
with You and Your
assurance.

I do not have such hard
duties to perform here, just
the length of time in a
foreign place. I want to
get back to America and
Lewes and New York.
I want to progress with
the plans of my life.
But everything is up to You.
I want to feel like that.
Just do my devotional
duties, now as a socializing
preacher and kind friend.
I’m not a solitary. Let
me chant my rounds nicely
even though I’m out of
station.

Let me hear the tune “Spiritual”
and write along to it,
imbibing the holy
vibrations and using them to bring me into
Your presence. You are my
Spiritual. My mystic
friend, the one who
decides what happens.

Please let me just accept
the fate you deal me
and not regret or resent
anything that appears
to be an obstacle.

I want to take the
inconveniences as just
forms of serving You and
remaining optimistic
and in good cheer as befits a devotee–
preacher of the Lord.
And let me write to You
each day and reach You
with a sort of poem.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'In Trinidad' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Free write

It’s March 24th 6:10 A.M., and I’m in a room in Trinidad Baladeva Dasa’s house in Trinidad. The long plane trip was uneventful. We watched two movies to pass the time. One movie (I can’t describe it in detail) was a comedy about a bad luck society woman who has two grown-up sons, and it tells about their adventures as they drive around the USA. Bad things are always happening to her, but she remains optimistic that everything is going to turn out alright in the end, which is does. Baladeva Vidyabhusana Dasa remarked that the story was like me, he and Narayana Kavaca, and I thought that was a humorous remark.

So now we’re here, and I’m off my schedule. I was tired and woke anyway at 3 A.M. I chanted two rounds and then went back to sleep. I’ve still only chanted two rounds. The plan is that today we just stay at this house and don’t meet the devotees but go the a beach house tomorrow and stay with them for some days. It will be a struggle to keep up a semblance of the schedule I had when I was living alone in the Yellow Submarine. I’ll count it a success if we can produce some kind of a journal and post it everyday. It may not be as ordered and composed as usual.

I’m all dressed up in my full sannyasa clothes wearing tilaka and shaved head and long sikha. Last night the woman pushing my wheelchair in the airport was incompetent and caused me long delays and then the elevator didn’t work. I told her I was a Hare Krishna minister. She said with great surprise “Are you a monk?” “Yes” I said, “A monk.” She then said “Are you like ‘Monk’ the detective on the TV show? Are you an actor?” What ignorance! “No” I said, “I’m not that kind of monk. I am not an actor.” We gave her a tip for her services, but I thought she deserved a kick for her incompetence and all the delays she caused us.

TRANSLATION

I do not fear being deprived of all my possessions, living in hellish life, being arrested for poverty by the ropes of Varuṇa or being punished by You as much as I fear defamation.

PURPORT

Although Bali Mahārāja fully surrendered to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he could not tolerate being defamed for cheating a brāhmaṇa-brahmacārī, Being quite alert in regard to his reputation, he thought deeply about how to prevent being defamed. The Lord, therefore, gave him the good counsel to prevent defamation by offering his head. A Vaiṣṇava does not fear any punishment. Nārāyaṇa-parāḥ sarve na kutaścana bibhyati (Bhāg. 6.17.28)

Omkara devi dasi: In the past few months, by your presence, I have observed several things, that I would like to mention briefly. Your classes oftentimes reflect the genuine caring and love for Srila Prabhupada. This is very exemplary and of high standard, of not only being Srila Prabhupada’s disciple, but as an acting Guru of Iskcon.

Sankirtana das, USA: Membership?

I enjoyed reading Kaunteya’s clear and thoughtful comments on the topic of ISKCON membership.
http://kaunteyadas.posterous.com/iskcon-membership-what-i-wrote-to-gbc-discuss

Just want to interject a few additional thoughts.

Once upon a time, you had to move into the temple, give whatever you had to the temple, get initiated and serve the temple 24 hours a day to be considered a member. Obviously those standards have fallen away and the movement is continuing without that mindset and is actually florishing in many places. But I’d like to understand why now is there a need to define membership? What is the purpose?

In regards to the analogy of citizenship, Prabhupada always said that the trees, cows and other animals were also citizens and should be afforded the same rights of protection as any citizen. A citizen in good standing certainly abides by the rules of the land. As a citizen, one also has certain rights and privileges. What privileges will a members of ISKCON have? To vote? To receive an ISKCON pension? Healthcare? The children of citizens also have the same rights as their parents when they grow up. Citizenship is probably not a good analogy for membership because in most cases citizenship does not require a active decision by the citizen.

Here in New Vrindaban, as I’m sure at other temples, we have long time supporters who strongly identify with the efforts of the community. They might consider themselves members. Will the move to define membership alienate our supporters and well wishers? What category do they fit in? What privileges will ‘members’ that they don’t have?

Our supporters already naturally honor initiated devotees and temple residents. By doing so, they make advancement. Why artificially accentuate this distinction with member and non member status? Will we end up like to Mormons where only members in good standing can enter the Church?

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Special Rama Navami Celebrations Next Week!

On Wednesday, March 24, 2010 Toronto's Hare Krishna Centre will mark the Appearance Day of Lord Rama (also known as Rama Navami). Lord Rama is the incarnation of Lord Krishna as the perfect monarch. He enacts His lila, or pastime, of killing the evil king Ravana and establishing virtue, by personal example, throughout His kingdom. The epic story of His transcendental adventures is told in the scripture Ramayana in which one reads of His unfailing devotion to His wife Sita and Their affectionate dealings with Lord Rama's many family members, particularly His devoted Brother, Laksmana.

Celebrations for this festival will take place in a big way! There will be two festivals on Wednesday, March 24th from 6:00-9:00 pm as well as on Sunday, March 28, 2010 from 6:00-9:00 pm.

A warm invitation goes out to everyone to attend both celebrations for a very special reason. Festivities will continue between Wednesday and Sunday. More details will be coming soon, but the theme of programs will be linked together. The new initiatives, taking place from Thursday to Saturday, will be interactive features to help celebrate Lord Rama. Stay tuned for more details!

Kaunteya das, Mayapura: Fighting and Depending on the Lord

Today I was reading "The Pastimes of the Supreme Lord, Ramacandra," Chapter 10 of the Ninth Canto Srimad-Bhagavatam.

Coming across Text 20 I began wondering what Srila Prabhupada meant - or rather whom he was referring to - by saying "Depending on the mercy of the Supreme Lord, one must fight one's enemies even though one may not be equipped with modern weapons."

The context is the fight between the army of the Vanaras (equipped only with stones, mountain peaks and trees), and the Raksasa army of Ravana, "equipped with weapons of modern warfare." Of course the monkeys could kill the Raksasas "who had lost all good fortune because Ravana had been condemned by the anger of mother Sita."

Srila Prabhupada explains that "There are two kinds of strength-daiva and purusakara. Daiva refers to the strength achieved from the Transcendence, and purusakara refers to the strength organized by one's own intelligence and power. Transcendental power is always superior to the power of the materialist. Depending on the mercy of the Supreme Lord, one must fight one's enemies even though one may not be equipped with modern weapons." What this last sentence means for a devotee?

We generally don't fight with weapons, modern or otherwise. Is it a reference to the need of keeping fighting inner and outer obstacles despite their apparent superiority? One might discover that a planet (much stronger than a modern weapon) influences one's mind in a non-spiritual way; should one remember that Daiva strength "achieved from the Transcendence" can overcome any astral or psychological influence? Or should we, collectively, remember that our attempts to spread Krishna consciousness with limited assets and funds should go on determinedly, confident of the protection of the Lord and His full capacity of bestowing success?

Would an analysis of the particular days in which Srila Prabhupada wrote this sentence reveal that he might have had something particular in mind, some particular challenge faced by ISKCON?

Should we conclude that the devotee in every circumstance should never forget that the power of God is stronger than any other power?

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: A Theoretical Approach To Understanding The Origins Of The Sacred Cow In India

From our friend Ali Krishna...

By Alysia Radder (Ali Krishna dd), University of Florida

Amidst rush-hour traffic, in a city boosting over 19 million people, a large cow and her companion cross the street with reckless abandon. Brakes squealing, horns honking, heads and clenched fists asserting themselves out of car windows in protest- thousands of cars are forced to maneuver and heed the right of way to that divine couple who have now decided to take their morning nap in the middle of Mumbai’s busiest highway intersection. Thus, the phenomenon of the “sacred cow” within India is directly observed.

An impassioned controversy has been stirring for over 50 years in the great struggle to uncover the origin of the cow’s rise to sacred status in India. The debate has been led by the arguments of Marvin Harris, a renowned cultural materialist, who reduces the Hindu ban on cow slaughter as a factor of ecological pressures. He argues that religious sanctity has been mistakenly given to a phenomenon that can best be explained by socio-political factors. However, Harris’s theory has met with great criticism. Frederick Simoons, a cultural geographer and contemporary of Harris, suggests that beef was not simply tabooed on environmental grounds but on religious factors as well. In this paper, I will prove that Harris’s functionalist approach is incomplete having not sufficiently addressed religious claims. While Simoons suggests a broader “positive” and “negative-functioned” theory, I will present how Geertz’s method of thick description reveals many discrepancies in Simoons observations. Thus, in compliance with Geertz’s interpretive model, I will conclude that in order to further determine the origins of the sacred cow in India, we must understand basic philosophical points of Hinduism concerning the nature of the soul, the laws of karma, and reincarnation.
