H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Wednesday 7 July 2010--The Supreme VIP--and--How Can I Resist Temptation?

There is no person in all of existence who is more important than Lord Sri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is the most important, the supreme VIP, because He is the source of all existence, the supreme controller and enjoyer, and the best friend of all living beings. Therefore it is absolutely impossible for anyone to compete with Him...

Kurma dasa, AU: The Upper Crust

Last night's class at the Upper Crust Cooking School was a grand success. Close to 30 Perth residents took shelter from the cold to enjoy an evening of culinary exploration.

Upper Crust:

It's been a while since I taught a cookery demonstration rather than my usual hands-on cooking classes. It requires more dedication to verbal clarity and more dexterity in balancing quality cooking with time management, oratory precision, good communication, humour, education and the skill of entertaining a large group for three hours, all at the same time.

The Big Stirrer:

The three-course menu featured rawa idlis with sambar dal and coconut chutney, lemon rice with flame-roasted pappadams and homemade hot and sweet tomato chutney.

luscious lemon rice:

Oh, and who could forget the delectable carrot halava?

Carrot Halava:

The fun continues tonight with part two of our Upper Crust cooking adventure.

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Canada Day Maha Harinam!

On Thursday, July 1, 2010, Toronto's Hare Krishna Centre celebrated Canada Day with a splash of colour! Our first Canada Day Maha Harinam took to the streets sharing the Holy Name, prasadam and books with the public during Canada Day festivities in downtown Toronto. With Festival of India (Ratha-Yatra) around the corner, this was also an amazing way to promote the festival. As such a colourful assembly set out and distributed thousands of invitations! ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Snana-Yatra Photos

This past Sunday, Toronto's Hare Krishna temple celebrated our annual Snana-Yatra festival. During this festival Lord Jagannatha, His brother Balarama, and His sister Subadhra are given a special abisheka (bathing ceremony).

The temple room was packed with people wanting to catch a final glimpse of Lord Jagannatha. Their Lordships have "mysteriously" contracted a cold while they were bathed in various substances and will be quarantined and given intensive care by their pujaris (priests) for the next two weeks.

Once they have had time to recover, they will come out of Their temple to give darshan to everyone during the Festival of India (Ratha-Yatra Festival) on July 17-18, 2010. Thier Lordships will be riding down Yonge Street on large colourful chariots pulled by Their devotees amid ecstatic chanting of the holy names! For more information please see the official Ratha-Yatra Website.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 1

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

3:57 A.M.

I have been sleeping peacefully here in my new room. I woke up at 2:30 A.M. but began to develop a headache and had to take medicine. I started chanting my rounds, and it has gone peacefully so far. I have chanted eight rounds. We are still moving into the room with boxes unopened and some things missing, like lamps etc., but there is basically a livable room and comfort with my Radha Govinda deities set up for darsana.  I am early enough so there is no noise coming from the other part of the house. This house is not as insulated as the Yellow Submarine from which I could hear no noises. But in the early morning hours there is no noise. So I have been whispering my rounds and hearing the syllables from the sacred and holy names. Yesterday at lunch Dhanurdhara Swami and Saci Suta were telling me how this part of New York is called "Bhajan Belt" and it is very active in kirtan and yoga and meeting, some of which take place here at Saci's house. I think I will not be very active in this socializing and yoga meetings. My bhajana will take place in this room by chanting japa and writing and broadcasting it on the web. I will try to report good news of japa done well in the early hours and so far this has been the case. I am able to concentrate and put my attention into chanting without worrying about the things that are undone around the house or other anxieties. Chanting should be a period when you are not worrying about contingencies, and what may happen. You just live in the present and just take your holy names to heart.

Chanting Hare Krishna in
the Bhajan Belt. My
bhajana is mostly
solitary but shared with
my friends. I try to give
the good news of a
person successfully chanting
his rounds. My mood
is separation, and I ease
it with Nama Prabhu.
This is my new home,
and it seems suitable
for chanting and
writing the daily web.
I thank Krishna
and my friends for
providing me another
good bhajana kutir.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Images of Prabhupada

Prabhupada Smaranam

I want to commend Yadubara Prabhu for his excellent film footage of Srila Prabhupada. His recently completed eleven part video series, Following Srila Prabhupada is a masterpiece of documentary filming of Prabhupada from 1965 to 1977, with recorded interviews by devotees commenting and elaborating on Prabhupada's activities in different places as seen in the film. Yadubara is an excellent filmmaker, and he possessed great foresight and determination to preserve the visual image of Prabhupada over the years. His wife and partner, Visakha Devi Dasi, captured many valuable still photographs of Prabhupada and worked with Yadubara in a team effort, in the filming. In addition to the series Following Srila Prabhupada Yadubara has made other films of Prabhupada and several films of the world of Hare Krishna which have been used in preaching programs to large audiences.

Never before in history has the moving form of great Vaisnava Acaryas been captured on film. We have only artists' renderings of the body of Lord Caitanya and the Six Gosvamis, based on descriptions in the scriptures, or simply the intuitions of artists. The importance of seeing the form of the pure devotee is mentioned in the episode concerning Lord Caitanya's visit to Vrndavana. When the Lord was staying at Akrura ghat, crowds of people came to Him and said, "We have directly seen Krishna at Kaliya ghat, dancing on the serpent's heads." In actuality the people were seeing the light of the fisherman's boat which they mistook for the flashing jewels on Kaliya's head. But in coming before Lord Caitanya and saying, "We have seen Krishna," they were inadvertently seeing Krishna, because Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krishna Himself in a disguised form of a devotee. In his purports to the incident, Srila Prabhupada states that Krishna can not be seen directly but through the guidance of the spiritual master. "A sincere person is able to see Krishna through the transparent via medium of Sri Gurudeva, the spiritual master." (Cc. Madhya 18.99, purport) By seeing Srila Prabhupada's face and body and hearing him speaking, and hearing reminiscences of him by those who saw him, we are getting in contact with Krishna. In recent days, at Sastra's house, I saw some of the Following Srila Prabhupada. For me the most moving moments were in film number 11, the final one, which shows Srila Prabhupada in his last days. We see him using the Dictaphone at night on the roof of his quarters of the Krishna Balaram Mandir, and we see him at his last tour to England, a few months before his disappearance. There he sits on the chair in the temple room, wearing dark glasses, and clapping softly while the devotees chant and dance in front of him. We finally see him in his last visit to Radha-Londonisvara where he took off his dark glasses and tears poured down his face. Srila Prabhupada on film has left me with deep emotional impressions, and I intend to see them again.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Arriving at Viraha Bhavan

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Free Write

So I have arrived in my residence in New York. My room is ready to move in but there is still lots of unpacking to be done and some more construction inside the house. Nevertheless, I am restarting my journal. I wanted to give some explanation why the journal is no longer called "The Yellow Submarine" and why I have given the name "Viraha Bhavan" to my house, my room and my journal. It occurs to me that at seventy and a half years old, I am in a last stage of my life and want to increase my feelings of separation from Radha-Krishna and Srila Prabhupada. In the Krishna book Prabhupada explains that the Gaudiya Vaisnava spiritual masters should inculcate feelings of separation in their followers. "To acquire this strong feeling of separation is the teaching of Lord Caitanya and His direct disciplic succession of Gosvamis. When we are not in physical contact with Krishna, we can associate with Him like the gopis, through feelings of separation. Krishna's transcendental form, qualities, pastimes and entourage are all identical with Him. There are nine different kinds of devotional service. Devotional service to Krishna in feelings of separation elevates the devotee to the highest perfectional level, to the level of the gopis."

"It is stated in Srinivasacarya's prayer to the six Gosvamis that they left the material opulences of government service and the princely status of life and went to Vrndavana, where they lived just like ordinary mendicants, begging from door to door. But they were so much enriched with the gopis' feelings of separation that they enjoyed transcendental pleasure at every moment. Similarly, when Lord Caitanya was at Jagannatha Puri, He was in the role of Radharani, feeling separation from Krsna. Those who are in the disciplic succession of the Madhva-Gaudiya–sampradaya should always feel separation from Krishna, worship His transcendental form and discuss His transcendental teachings, His pastimes, His qualities and His entourage. That will enrich the devotees to the highest devotional perfection. Feeling constant separation while engaged in the service of the Lord is the perfection of Krishna consciousness." (Krishna book, pp. 332–333).

I do not intend to do this in a premature imitation in the practice of raganuga-bhakti. I am not ready to follow in the footsteps of a resident of Vrndavana and meditate on my eternal service to Radha-Krishna. But I want to hear Radha-Krishna pastimes as I have been doing nowadays in Raghunatha Dasa Goswami's Stavavali. So that is one reason I am calling my room and my journal "Viraha Bhavan." Viraha means feeling of separation and the bhavan refers to an ashram or residence. With this in mind I have asked them to paint the walls of my room light green. I got this idea from the biography of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati. It describes the time of his extended japa vow in solitary, austere living in Mayapur. "Srila Siddhanta Sarsvati cleared an overgrown area at Yogapitha and made a grass hut in which he lived from 1905 to 1909 amid his many books and manuscripts. In correspondence Alankara Sastra describing green as an expressive of Viraha-bhava he preferred to use green items—for instance, wearing a green shawl in winter and writing with green ink." (Sri Bhaktisiddhanta Vaibhava, by Bhakti Vikasa Swami, p. 40).

Another reason I called this room (bhajana kutira) and journal "Viraha Bhavan," is because this is the place where I will experience the feelings of separations from Srila Prabhupada. I do that through "Prabhupada Smaranam" the daily discipline of my written meditation on the picture of Prabhupada. I pray that I will be able to keep it up. I plan to continue the daily poem and a Free Write, but they depend not so much on my will as on the mercy of the muse.

Just for information I will tell you of my arrival day. We left Rehoboth at 5 A.M. and made good time on the empty major highways, highway 1, the New Jersey turnpike, highways 287 and 87. Visnu-aradhanam almost made a few wrong turns and stopped several times to confirm at gas-stations that we were going in the right direction. But, as I anticipated, when we got to Hudson, the town nearby Stuyvesant Falls, we got completely lost. We phoned the devotees at the house but they weren't able to help us. Finally we wound up at Martin Van Buren estate, which I knew was close to Saci's, and we phoned for someone to come out and rescue us. When we arrived at my new house there were many devotees and volunteers present, still unloading the truck and working on construction inside the house. There is still a lot to do before it is ready, but my room is liveable. The devotees present included Lalita-madhava, Gopi-manjari and their children, Kirtana Rasa, Beth and their children, Saci-suta, Keli-lalita and their children, Visnu-aradhanam, Lila-avatara, Haryasva, Gurudas, Baladeva and other people whose names are new to me, but who have been working on fixing the house, like Mikey, T. J. and various women and children etc.; it was wonderful to see everyone sitting down outdoors enjoying a picnic feast cooked by mother Kaulini and talking among themselves. Dhanurdhara Swami came out of his quarters and joined us for the feasting and talking. A wonderful day. I moved in a room with packed boxes, my Radha-Govinda deities and a semi-functional TV.

My address at Albany Avenue is P.O. Box 233, Stuyvesant Falls, NY, 12174. I have the same email address, sdg@sdgonline.org.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Black Currant Jam

Last year and this year I planted a bunch of  different kinds of berries.

Of the ones I planted last year I am getting some berries this year. Blackberries and elderberries will be a lot of them, but not here yet. I planted some raspberries in the fall and got a handful from a few of them. I got a handful of blueberries. I got three jostaberries which were good and I look forward to them.  The chokeberry bush has a bunch on  it but not ready yet.

What I did get a quart of was black currants. I can see that when fully producing it is going to be a very abundant bush.  I didn’t pick them right away though. I had picked one and tasted it and it was terrible. I waited, thinking they might not be ripe even though the color had changed.  After a week, one of our neighbors was visiting so I was showing her the currant bush.  We both tasted one and she spit hers out it was so bad.

Googling, I found out black currants are not for fresh eating, though apparently the pink ones are, of which I also planted one, not bearing this year.  They are used for jam and as flavoring for sauces.  Many Americans have never even heard of them and for a long time cultivation of black currants was illegal because it is an alternate host for white pine rust. New York has only recently legalized their cultivation.

In Europe they are more popular.

I got a recipe I adapted proportionately to my quantity. It was as follows:

Black Currant Jam recipe

4 pounds black currants

3 pints water

6 pounds sugar

Add water to currants and cook until they break down and volume is reduced by 1/3.

Add sugar and cook for ten minutes or until the jam sets on a cold sheet.

What gives black currants the bad taste is they are very sour, but that sourness is an advantage when making jam because you don’t need to add any pectin, it sets easily by itself.

Result? Really great jam! The flavor is incredible. I took some to my neighbor who had spit out the raw berry and she could hardly believe it was the same fruit the jam was so good.

I might play with using less sugar because it is almost too sweet, but next year with the new growth I see on the black currant bush, the harvest will be lots more and lots of jam will be forthcoming.

I am guessing that for the chokeberries there will be a similar scenario when they ripen.

1) ISKCON is still a relatively new religious society, members are not yet reaching elderly age. What system is set up or to be set up for aging Vaisnavas?2) Varnaprastha ashram is also a relatively unknown concept. Where should one who is approaching this ashram expect to live, eg. temple life, or his own residence on his own, but contributing to the temple eg. service or preaching?
3) For men does this ashram ultimately lead to the sannyasa ashram?
4) What will happen to woman after there husbands decide to enter the varnaprastha ashram?

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Eggless Rice Pudding Recipe –So Easy!

How funny is it that I have a cooking blog but consistently don’t post recipes. Lots of laughs and good times here, I know.

Rice pudding. Someone actually wrote me that they wanted the recipe. My recipe? Guess so!

Here’s the 411 on my rice pudding. So, so easy. Ridiculously simple. Just a enough ingredients that you can count them on one hand, provided you have all your fingers. And if you don’t, well, the recipe is so good that if you have to leave out an ingredient or two, it just might come through for you anyway!

No eggs. No heavy cream. Just rice, milk, sugar and, if you really love your pudding, whole vanilla bean. If you are the femme fatale of pudding, you might just even add a cinnamon stick or two to the mix.

Let me break it down for you, NJ diner-style. El Matador, Peter Pank, you know what it is all about. Thick and creamy, this pudding will definitely get you looking like Snookie in no time.

RECIPE!

1 gallon milk, the wholer the better
2.5 cups of sugar, avoid white refined sugar because it has no taste. Turbinado or evaporated cane are lovely
1.5 c rice, white or brown, short grain is my fave but basmati or jasmine add a flair of their own–up to you!
1 extra long vanilla bean–split it, scrape it, use *everything.* Yes, you can add a teaspoon or two of extract if you are too cheap to buy the beans.

Okay. If you want to make life easier for you and your pot washer, coat the bottom of your pot with ghee (clarified butter). If you don’t have ghee, just make sure you are vigilant about your stirring.

Pot size. Use a large pot. Seriously. Milk foams up and boils over and is a white burnt on pain in the arse to deal with. Tall sides will do you and your stove scrubber good. I am not going to tell you what size pot to use because, after all, this is America and you have choices. I would recommend something stainless steel with a wide base and tall sides. Basically, I bust out the 3 gallon pot whenever I am boiling one g of milk. Makes my life…a little better.

Your pot size and stove BTU’s are going to seriously have an effect on the cooking time. So let’s say you are going to cook your rice pudding for 45 minutes. However, don’t hold me to it.

The Process!

1) Coat the bottom of a pot with ghee.
2) Turn burner on high.
3) Pour in milk. Stir occasionally until milk comes to a boil.
4) Add rice to milk. Stir occasionally until milk returns to a boil.
5) Add sugar to boiling rice and milk. Stir occasionally until milk returns to a boil.
(If you are confident of your stirring abilities, add rice and sugar at same time. Sugar burnt on the bottom of a pot is a PITA and sugary milk burnt on your stove is more difficult to clean up than plain old burnt on milk…so if you feel you can handle it, be a badass and dump it all in at once.)
6) Take your extra long vanilla bean, bifurcate it with a knife and scrape the contents into the pot. Throw the pod in their for good measure, cause you know you didn’t do that great a job scraping!
7) When it all comes to a hard boil, reduce heat to medium. Give it a stir and, as long as it is boiling, go update your Facebook status and read the news for about 30 minutes before checking back with your dessert.
8) Cook your rice pudding down until the grains are soft, the color is light golden and the liquid is thick and comes off the spoon a consistency similar to pancake batter.
9) Off the heat and make sure you remove the pot from the burner to prevent burning! Let cool on the stove top about an hour and then refrigerate covered. You could just shove it in the fridge uncovered to avoid condensation but maybe your fridge stinks so, in that case, just be patient. In the end, you want to refrigerate it at least an hour before serving.
10) Like many things delicious, rice pudding is best made the day before so all the flavors can get to know each other and feel more comfortable socializing in your mouth.

If you like the way your mom made rice pudding as a kid–scooped from the deli containers from the local Shoprite, you might want to sprinkle some cinnamon on top. Personally, I like eating mine with fresh, seasonal fruit.

Enjoy!

Nitya Navina dd, New Jersey, USA: Thieves in Disguise

When younger, summer holidays for me meant lots of reading. I would clean out my desk and settle down with just about any book that caught my eye. One particular summer I remember pasting two quotations, one from the Thirukural  which went something like "One may smile and smile but be no friend, for the heart has to smile with the face," and the other, a quote by William Penn, written in a

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Kitchen Update

Unfortunately, not much to update. The tile should be completed by the end of this week. Hoping faucets and range hood get put up by then, too. Lots of little finish work here and there, as well as painting of some doors. But after two months since demo, I will consider the kitchen done once my faucets are in and I can start properly cleaning and putting stuff away.

Of course, we still have to eat. Saturday I decided that I could not live another minute without a couple of gallons of rice pudding on hand. So….two gallons of milk later, a few vanilla beans scraped and multiple cups of sugar dumped, me and my growing girth had rice pudding. I finished it off this morning for breakfast.

Vanilla bean rice pudding served with Georgia peach

Our garden! It is like an extension of our kitchen, although it has not been very bountiful this year. Our soil could use some conditioning. Nevertheless, the kids love it and the herbs have done really well. My son’s sunflower flourishes and tomatoes are plentiful enough to keep the front of my daughter’s shirt squirted with tiny red seeds.

My son's dwarf sunflower. This particular plant has about 12 flowers blooming!

Homegrown tomato. We pick and eat as they grow. Hardly ever make it into the kitchen.

Beans? Peas? Kind of both.

The morning of 4th of July, my family headed to Lake Alice for a morning stroll through the drizzle. Venumadhava had a great time climbing trees and Madhumati had a great time picking flowers, a step up from picking her nose, for sure!

Thanks to the rice pudding, my baby bump @ 3 months is more of a muffin top. Lake Alice, Aligator and Us Elephant Ear Umbrella Parkour!

We came across huge elderberry bushes the size of trees and I immediately got that crazed jelly look in my eyes. Conservation area? Whatever! This was rampant elderberries, ripe for the picking. Unfortunately, these must be of the red variety because they were absolutely tasteless. Good for dyeing but lousy for jelly making. Ho-hum.

Elderberries @ Lake Alice

Dinner. We eat it. Yesterday, the husband and I went shopping and bought my favorite tofu, Tree of Life. Love to eat this stuff raw, just slice and chew. It is great in salads. The husband does not love to eat it raw, so I dutifully cooked some for dinner.

Tree of Life: My new favorite tofu.

We are still really low on kitchen organization so again I stuck with fresh garden herbs, Braggs, hing, salt, pepper, paprika, Old Bay Seasoning (I know) and buttah. Lots and lots of buttah.

Last nite's dinner. Fettuccine in a whole wheat spelt flour bechamel sauce with broccoli, corn on the cob and pan fried tofu served with smoky chopped tomatoes.

Countertops are in so technically I should be open to baking. However, I am still holding out for sinks. Hopefully everything will be in order by Friday since I am committed to making croissants for my friend, Adi Gopi’s baby shower brunch on Sunday. Here we are below, trying to compare baby bellies.

Pregnants. Tried to get a comparative belly shot, but the height differential made it impossible

Jaya Kesava Das, USA: What a Wonderful World

We took a morning walk along Lake Ontario and these were some thoughts running through my head...

I like beaches, fresh ocean, well, lake air, Wine Bottle from a dark nights rendezvous, McDonald's bags, 1, 2 few, many- all over. Cigarette butts, tissues, newspapers, coffee cups, other things monks shouldn't mention by name, etc.
"This is a place of Pilgrimage you know, Srila Prabhupada walked here in the Summer of 75 when he visited Toronto."
How advanced we've become, few years later. If the Mayans, or the Aryans do come back, what would they think of us? We've  redefined ruins. Back then, they left ruins we still flock to see today.
But why, I ask myself? Why?
Well, my self started to say, we've done it to ourselves. We've created a culture of packaging; no matter how significant or insignificant the product, just package it nicely and you'll make money :)   :)    :)
But I promise you you won't be satisfied with the 3.0 version, so I'll make you a 3.1 version next season. And the package, throw it away- wherever. Caution, its hot, take it for a nice walk along the ocean shore; and when you're done, just throw it somewhere, the Government will clean it up.
So we go on day after day enjoying what we think might be the best drink, smoke, night of our lives, and when we're through, still lacking inner satisfaction, throw the package down.
'Xcuse me sir, I a monk-- " aw shut it, we don't wanna hear that God crap. We want equal rights for everone"
Well, then how about that seagull? you just dropped your cig butt and he thought it was food, so he just dove and chucked it right in. Oh, and that bag you just threw out after emptying your evening snack number 15 carried a nice scent with it, so the cow came and at the bag. Yup. Ate the bag. Now the doctors say lots of cows in Krsna's holy land are suffering from junk, like plastic bags and cups in their stomachs. Sounds cuddly.

But what if you did stop for a minute and looked around and see whats going down? What if you could live more peacefully without all the noise? Maybe in your own little house on the prairie and not in your pigeon hole apartment in the city?   How bout that?

So yah, as I walked this morning, my alter ego, super monk wanted to burst out and smash everything and everyone, but deeper inside me is a place that still needs cleaning too, so I'll just keep working on me, working on you working on we :)

Festival at the Susquehanna River

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

I felt so honoured to be present for the memorial anniversary of the passing of my dear monk friend, Bhakti Tirtha Swami. It has been five years since his leaving us. In retrospect I see him as the personification of the principle 'unity and diversity'. His presentation, style, dress code, demeanour was bold, daring, fresh, different. He broke through conventional boundaries and would open up topics that some of us would be shy to talk about. He was like a chameleon adjusting to diverse situations and all the time so much advocating a 'oneness' factor. He would emphasize unity, harmony and cohesion; to work as a unit.

At the samadhi tomb of the Swami at the Gita Nagari farm where the service was held, I was asked to speak something and this thought came to mind, "Her is the embodiment of the philosophy of Chaitanya "achintya bhedabheda" or, simultaneously oneness and difference.

For the afternoon our party drove to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania's capital city, for their summer's music festival. Incorporated into the festival was a mini Ratha Yatra. Swamis from other parts of the US came such as Bhakti Caru, Veda Vyasa Priya and Chandrashekar to enrich the program with their presence. I spoke with Gauravani who is doing the kirtan (chanting) circuit traveling and singing. He shared time on the stage with our drama troupe for "Lonely People". He does that excellent singing presentation with his group.

One thing that was novel was hearing Chandrashekar Swami quote a Christian speaker as the swami and I had a casual talk, "There's a God-shaped hole in the heart that only God can fill."

Top Ten

Port Royal, Pennsylvania

Before the long haul to Pennsylvania by rented car, I squeezed in two and a half kilometers on foot in the town of Russell, Ontario. Our driver was Nitai Priya, but passengers, Gaura, Sing Lung Wong and myself had time to kill. Usually it's my job to insert the spiritual element into these trips. So I asked everyone including driver if we could act as a self proclaimed panel of judges on coming up with our top ten favourite pastimes of Krishna.

Here is what we came up with; our top ten (and not necessarily in order favourite to less favourite):

1) Krishna kidnapping Rukmini
2) The gopis (cowherd maidents) blocking Krishna from leaving their village, Vrindavan.
3) Krishna smiling while his friend, Arjuna, was confused.
4) Krishna washing the feet of attendees at the Rajasuya sacrifice.
5) Krishna consuming the meager rice of poor man, Sudhama
6) Krishna's mother, Yasoda, looking into the mouth of her son, and seeing the cosmic form.
7) The bumblebees that spoke to Radharani, Krishna's confidante.
8) Krishna duplicating or cloning himself as many cowherd boys.
9) Krishna massaging His elder brother, Balaram's legs.
10) Krishna wrestled down the bulls to win Princess Satya as His bride.

Dear readers, what are your tope ten favourites? I would like to hear from you.

At Parliament Hill

Ottawa, Ontario

Every year near the war memorial, a short jaunt from Parliament Hill, devotees of Krishna set up a stage with awning and sound equipment on this day. It's Canada Day, the birth anniversary of a nation and at 6 am, the modest stage is assembled to contribute to the celebration.

By the time our small Toronto delegation of five had arrived, the Queen had already completed royal renderings but the kirtan (chanting) was in full swing. We merged with the vibrant chanters. Within minutes I was led to the microphone. My dear friend Mahajan hit the keyboard and went for seventies funk playing to the Maha-Mantra.

The chanting drew in the public. One Japanese young woman jumped into the enthusiastic dance circle. Her companions insisted on staying outside the loop. They periodically tried to pull her away from her ecstatic dance. She fought back fiercely but lovingly resisting the oncoming advances of her friends. This was so entertaining to watch.

I had sensed that the kirtan was mellow previously and that the chanters were up for a change of rasa (mood). They were so happy when we shifted gears. And the dancers? Well, our Canadian flag pole became the limbo stick for those who wanted to go as low as they could go. A competition sprang out of this, and all the while the chanting sound was rising from the crowd.

Those that didn't make a sound stood sedate and others engaged, jaws-dropped, seeing the fun approach to spiritual expression. It was nothing dull or drab.

I began to think that Chaitanya, the father of kirtan for the age, was the master-mind behind making spirituality so very attractive. What a blessing it is to be a part of this experience!

Walk on Behalf of Someone

Mississauga, Ontario

From the window of her moving car the young blonde shouted out, "Are you a monk?"

At that moment a large van wedged its way with in the lane between her and the sidewalk. She vanished and couldn't here my response which was, "I'm the real McCoy!"

I was on my way to the subway to take it to the end of the line. From there I trekked a good ten kilometres through the suburbs of Mississauga not just for an adventure but as a dedication to a deceased devotee, Sukadev, who passed away just the day before.

Dedication walks are extremely powerful. The walker sets himself or herself as a form of prayer simply through the act of walking in honour of someone. Putting leg power into the well-being of a loved one is a strong way to communicate with that person. I recall in 2003 while on one of the three Trans-Canada walks I decided to dedicate one day to Keshava Sharma, one of our shining youths who is very active in service to the community. I walked to wish him well.

That day happened to rain for eight straight hours which began as if on cue with him with my first step. It got so wet to the point that I could not sit anywhere dry and it was practically all countryside meaning there was no place for a break. I ended up trekking those eight hours straight with 40km under my feet investing them, in a subtle way, to a young guy who deserved the dedicated attention.

I take such reflective walks as moving prayers.

If there was time for a second question to come from the blonde such as, "What do you do as a monk?" which is a natural follow-up query, then I would say that one of the things monks do is to walk in dedication.

Our so-called religion is unique in the world, simply because we stand solidly on philosophy, and because we are strong in that way, no one can refute or defeat us, so we are wiping out sentimental religion wherever we penetrate and it appears the people everywhere are accepting us more and more.
