H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Monday 6 September 2010--With the Greatest Delight--and--Ultimate Goal of the Living BeingThere is nothing more delightful, more enlivening than engaging in the devotional service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead because such service connects one with his actual self. It is not a temporary ephemeral pleasure of the senses that fades away very quickly after being tasted. Rather it is permanent, lasting happiness, which goes on increasing... Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: A Rare ShotSome of my friends at the Garden Web Kitchen Forum were a bit offended that I unveiled my finished kitchen to them without so much as even inviting them over for a slice of pie! After all my effort to get a put-away kitchen to make my space photo ready, there was some teasing on the forum for “action” shots. Since I am usually the one clicking the pics, this didn’t seem likely. Then some pictures from last Saturday night surfaced on Facebook with me throwing together some pizzas. You know, pizza pies! Perfect. Two birds, one stone. ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Daily Class - Bhakta PrabhuSrimad Bhagavatam 11.23.41 - Krishna is the perfect personal trainer. Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: a diseased condition of spiritual lifeSri Caitanya Mahaprabhu further inquired from Haridasa, "Can you ascertain what your disease is?" Haridasa Thakura replied, "My disease is that I cannot complete my rounds." If one cannot complete the fixed number of rounds he is assigned, he should be considered to be in a diseased condition of spiritual life. Counting on the devotees smelling the gas is not enough. Often that does not happen. The devotees don't smell it and they are killed while sleeping or when they light some incense or the stove to start cooking. The tanks should be mounted outside the van. But the bare minimum precaution is that there always be plenty of ventilation---open the back door when you are cooking / open a window when you are sleeping. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada: “The role of the holy name in the progression of devotional service: "If due to some righteous activities which provoke devotional service one is influenced by the service attitude and takes shelter of the good association of pure devotees, he develops attachment for hearing and chanting. While developing chanting and hearing, one can advance further and further in regulative devotional service to the Supreme Lord. As one so advances, his misgivings about devotional service and his attraction for the material world proportionately diminish. By advancing in hearing and chanting, a devotee becomes more firmly fixed in his faith and gradually his initial faith develops into a taste for devotional service and that taste develops into attachment. When attachment becomes pure, it exhibits two characteristics of bhava and rati. When rati increases, it is called love of Godhead, and love of Godhead is the ultimate goal of life." (Teachings of Lord Caitanya) This quote is parallel to Rupa Gosvami's famous verse describing the progression from sraddha to prema. This is done by progressive chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra through the offensive stage to the offenseless stage. One goes from regular devotional service to spontaneous hearing and chanting and develops krsna-prema. This is the long road to perfection. Last night I woke with a headache and took medicine. I finally woke up with the alarm clock at two o'clock A.M. and began my chanting. I had a single mental distraction of a subject matter that was on my mind and it detracted from my pure chanting. This sometimes happens. Nevertheless I kept a separate track of attentive chanting and fought off my distraction. I chanted quickly and with outward attention to the syllables. I got over thirteen rounds done before my writing time. I am sorry about the particular distraction. After talking about it with Baladeva I got some relief and the subject matter is no longer on my mind. Now I can begin my writing. Sometimes while you H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Make a Poem of AdorationMake a poem out of Praise His qualities as He is far away but very It's the thing to do, H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: A Dream and More…Free WriteI had a dream of anxiety about the naval reserve and ISKCON. I was waiting in a crowd for a bus to take me to a Naval reserve meeting. My sister was obliged to go too. A Naval recruit in a sailor uniform started bullying me. He didn't like the idea of going to the meeting. A bus pulled up but passed us by. We got worried about being late. I asked the recruit if he had ever been on a big ship at sea. I said it is a beautiful experience. He didn't like it. He said Swami Bon of the Gaudiya Matha was going to write to the Navy on his behalf and get him released from active duty. I resented Swami Bon meddling in Navy affairs. A second bus came and passed us by. I started hitchhiking among the pedestrians but then realized they had no cars. A third bus came and passed us. I consulted with my sister and we decided we would arrive too late at the Naval Reserve meeting and so we decided to go home. Missing one meeting wouldn't be so bad. Then in the dream I gradually realized I have no obligations to attend Naval Reserve meetings. I woke with a headache and the neighbor's dog was barking. I turned randomly to Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.15.6. Arjuna is speaking, grief- stricken about the departure of Krishna from the earth. "I have just lost Him whose separation for a moment would render all the universes unfavorable and void like bodies without life." Prabhupada explains that without the soul, the material body has no value. And without the Paramatma, the living being has no status quo. And Brahman and Paramatma have no locus standi without the Supreme Lord Krishna. "They are all interlocked with one another… Thus in the ultimate issue the Lord is the summum bonum and therefore the vital principle of everything." (Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.15.6, purport) Without Krishna nothing would exist. Arjuna is feeling that personally now that Krishna has left his personal company, Arjuna has lost all his personal strength. Arjuna goes on to deliberate on all the incidents when he was able to dominate and be victorious only because of the strength of Lord Krishna. Arjuna takes shelter by remembering the instructions of Krishna in the Bhagavad-gita and feels inspiration there. Thus Arjuna again becomes lord of his senses. When they learned the Lord had disappeared, the Pandavas also left this earth. Anyone who faithfully hears the accounts of the Lord's disappearance and the Pandavas' departure attains devotional service. We all have to leave our material bodies sooner or later, and if we do so with understanding of Lord Krishna's birth and activities, we don't have to return for another material body but attain the spiritual world. That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita verse, janma karma ca me divyam… Krishna upholds the world. Without Him, nothing can be sustained. This morning Sacisuta read to me the section of Junior Haridasa and Lord Caitanya's anger at him for his hypocrisy. He committed some slight offense in going to get the rice from Sikhi Mahiti's sister Madhavi. Lord Caitanya considered it a breach of illicit sex. Caitanya Caritamrta doesn't specify the dealings except that Junior Haridasa was apparently alone with her against the injunction that one should not talk alone and be alone even with one's mother. Lord Caitanya told His servant not to allow Junior Haridasa to come into His company. The devotees went to Lord Caitanya and asked Him to forgive Junior Haridasa and that he had been fasting for three days. Lord Caitanya told His devotees to go about their business and not mention this to Him if they wanted to see Him again. The devotees covered their ears and asked Paramananda Puri to plead the case of Junior Haridasa to the Lord. Paramananda Puri did so, and Lord Caitanya immediately got up from His place and told Paramananda Puri that he should take care of the devotees while Lord Caitanya went to live at Alalanatha with Govinda. Paramananda Puri physically restrained the Lord and stopped his plea for Junior Haridasa. We will read the rest of the section next time. I made no comments during the reading and neither did Sacisuta. He then told me what he was going to do today. The reading put me in a silent mood. H.H. Bhakticharu Swami: Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 3.24.37The following lecture was given by H.H. Bhakti Caru Swami Maharaja on September 5th, 2010, in ISKCON Ujjain. Śrīmad Bhāgavatam Canto 3: The Status Quondash; Chapter 24: The Renunciation of Kardama Munindash; Text 37 Srila Prabhupada's Letters 1965 September 5 : "In the evening the sky was cloudy and they expected foggy weather and all of them became little gloomy. But at midnight we passed Malta by God's grace it was all right throughout the night." Srila Prabhupada's Letters 1967 September 5 : "When I received your letter, it appeared to me that I had received a letter from a lost child. I felt too much aggrieved when some of you left me, but I was confident that all of you would come again." Srila Prabhupada's Letters 1969 September 5 : "I can re-organize all the branches of the Gaudiya Math in India. If you can negotiate about our amalgamation on a cooperative basis, it will be great service to Srila Prabhupada." Srila Prabhupada's Letters 1969 September 5 : "It is like electricity: if one is in touch with a bonafide Spiritual Master and that spiritual master is in touch with his bonafide Spiritual Master, in this way an offering is transferred to Krishna." Srila Prabhupada's Letters 1969 September 5 : "I do not know who has said this about rasa with the Spiritual Master, but it is a most unauthorized statement. Better you should stick to hearing from authorized persons, like your Spiritual Master." Srila Prabhupada's Letters1974 September 5: "My only anxiety is to guide you. Krsna sometimes makes me sick just to examine how much you have learned to conduct the business under my guidance. You should never act independently, because my guidance in my words are always there." Srila Prabhupada's Letters1974 September 5: "There will be no more discussion. Immediately this should be stopped, this matter. This is not an ordinary thing that if somebody has got some fault he should be cut. He should be encouraged and reformed by amicable dealings." Srila Prabhupada's Letters1975 September 5: "Krishna appears for this purpose. He leaves behind His instructions so that in the future people could take His help and guidance. But, if you do not accept His instructions, then how can you be happy?" Srila Prabhupada's Letters1974 September 5: "This restaurant program will not work. Do not attempt. Best idea is to go to Fiji and preach. Preaching is first. That is the business of sannyasi, not opening restaurant." Srila Prabhupada's Letters1975 September 5: "I am here in Vrindaban for some time. If you come and stay with me along with some of your interested friends, I shall be happy to convince you how this Krishna consciousness movement is so needed all over the world." Caitanya Mangala, CA, USA: Countdown to Kulimela Australia 2010/11Fellow Kulis, Vaishnava youth, devotees of Krsna, and associates, Kulimela France has come and gone and by all reports it was an excellent gathering so congratulations to the entire team who organised and pulled off that event and made it what it was, and to all of the people who attended and participated in it. It is now time to start looking forward to the Australian Mela at the end of this year/start of next year. It is not too early to start planning ahead for your journey down under and now would be a great time to book flights as there are a number of very cheap flights available ($1000 return from LA as an example) so it would be wise to book early to save your dollars to give you more spending money for when you're over here. Just a reminder that the Kulimela week will be from the 3rd to the 9th of Jan 2011 while the week before that (27th of Dec to 2nd of Jan) will be packed with tours and adventures and give everyone a chance to get to know each other while exploring this beautiful country. There will be day trips to the pristine beaches, a trip to the national parks, local wildlife adventures, bushwalking, sightseeing and a number of other activities to keep you entertained while the international Kulis get over their jet lag and acclimatise to our wonderful summer. We would like to encourage people to come in that first week as it will be a great way to begin to get to know each other and an easy way for you to see some of the local attractions. A full schedule for both weeks will be announced shortly but so far our plans for the first week are: Monday the 27th of December – Registration, relaxation Tuesday the 28th of December – A day trip to beautiful Byron Bay with options for surfing lessons, snorkelling or scuba diving Wednesday the 29th of December – A trip to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary where you will get an opportunity to get up close and personal with Australia's unique wildlife, followed by a trip to the nearby rock pools for a refreshing swim. Thursday the 30th of December – Climb nearby Mt Warning – an extinct volcano with spiritual significance to the local Aboriginal people. Friday the 31st of December – A trip up to the sunny Gold Coast with opportunities to check out many of the pristine beaches, Surfers Paradise, and the nearby theme parks followed by bhajans on the beach through till midnight to bring in the new year in an auspicious manner. We have many exciting plans and special guests already for the Mela week, including; HG Dina Bhandu Prabhu, HG Sruti Kirti Prabhu, hopefully Radhannath Swami, cooking with Kurma workshops, valuable and relatable seminars, and a long list of quality entertainment and music with names such as: Gauravani, Sri Prahlad, The Ghost Brothers and Azitiz already confirmed as attending with many more local and international acts yet to be confirmed. We would like to welcome people to start getting in early and expressing their interest to attend so that we can start to formulate a rough guide of numbers. If you have any special need or requirements or would like to arrange a particular level of accommodation, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can point you in the right direction. I have a list of local motels, hotels, hostels and caravan parks so if you would like to book accommodation at one of those places I suggest you get in early and let me know so I can pass the information on to you, or it's all on the Kulimela Australia Facebook group page. We still require a number of volunteers to head up different areas and we need representatives from all parts of the globe to help us promote this event. So if you would like to get involved in any way please let us know and we will be sure to put your talents to good use. Whether you would like to conduct a seminar or workshop, perform on stage, participate in the fashion show, put your art on display, sell your products, help man the registration booth, help out with decorating, sing some bhajans in the kutir, or help cook or distribute prasadam, any and all offers will be much appreciated and will contribute towards the overall success of this Mela. This event is for us and by us so it is important for its success that we all get involved and help out where we can. It is about bringing us all together so even if you can not attend yourself it is a worthy cause so I would still encourage you to get involved in some way – even if it is just volunteering to put up a poster at your local temple. We have a website in the final stages of production that should be up and running in the next week or two so once that is going we will upload all of the info to that and begin processing registrations. At this stage we are anticipating the festival fee to be AU$108 for the full week for the early birds with that price rising slightly as we get closer to the dates. So prepare to get in early and register as soon as possible. We will send out a message once the website is running and once we figure out accommodation costs. The majority of the accommodation will be camping – in either small one or two man tents or bigger capacity 10 man ones, so if you require a higher level of accommodation, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can try and help you out. I think that's enough info for one day, and hope that you have read it all up to here. Stay tuned for further updates in the coming weeks as we finalise more of the details and please let us know of your attendance plans as soon as possible so that we can provide all of the facilities required for the number of people attending. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any questions or concerns. Your servants, the Kulimela Australia organisation team. Sita-pati dasa, AU: Videos from tonight's Sunday FeastRecorded with the following equipment: Sony MS-ECM957 stereo condensor microphone (that I've had since 1998): Yamaha Audiogram 6 audio interface. I used the first two channels stereo-linked with the compression set to 50%. Sanyo CG-65 Digital Camera - in PC Camera mode it does VGA resolution (640x480) I used Adobe Flash Media Encoder and sent the stream to Ustream, where it was recorded. Adobe Flash Media Encoder does the Flash encoding and compressing on my machine, which gives better quality video for the bandwidth available. If you don't use Adobe FME the encoding and compressing takes place on Ustream's server, and you're sending an uncompressed signal up the wire (or over the air, as the case may be). I used my 3G USB key over Optus' cellular network. In my pre-testing Speedtest.net told me that I had just over 300kbps upstream to LA, so I configured Adobe FME to use 280kbps, to make sure that I didn't have any lag. For the future I would like to try the compressor in my Sony MZ-R50 minidisc (which I bought with the Sony mic in 1998), rather than the Audiogram 6 compressor; and add a vocal feed to mix in. At the moment I'm experimenting with room miking, rather than using a desk feed. I think a hybrid solution will be best. I installed Windows 7 Professional this afternoon and got everything working in time to head in at 4pm (which really surprised me). Preliminary testing indicates that I can send the same stream to Ustream.tv for streaming audio and video, and also to KirtanAustralia.com for streaming audio. However, if I'm using 280kbps for the video stream and 128kbps for audio, then I'd need over 500kbps solidly. One possibility for this is to use a local wireless point and an ADSL connection (which is available in some locations) for one stream, and the 3G wireless key for the other stream. This could be achieved by altering the routing table on the computer to assign a route for KirtanAustralia.com to one interface. Otherwise, I have had *really* good results using variable bit rate encoding with Darkice (on Linux) for audio streaming. I'll experiment with Edcast on Windows to see if it can do variable rate encoding. Mayapur Online: Save YourselfIn 1966 Srila Prabhupada told his followers,”Always remember that this Krsna consciousness is a sort of declaration of war with this illusory material nature. So there is war. She will always try to get you to fall down. It is very strong, powerful. How you can save yourself?” This is an issue we all need to resolve, and here’s an approach you may find helpful. H.H.
