Japa Group: Hopeful For Improving My Japa

I'm always hopeful for improving my japa. And improve I do. I get better sessions. I get sessions without a headache. I get sessions where I wake up early and get a good head start. So I experience ups and downs and go on hoping and go on with determination overall. And I go on with faith in the scriptures. You can call it academic faith or you can even call it blind faith. Prabhupada said he distributed books on blind faith because his spiritual master told him to. I have a similar "blind faith" that the chanting of the holy names is the only way to attain God consciousness in this age.

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Siva Ratri Celebrations

On Sunday, February 14, 2010, Toronto's Hare Krishna Temple celebrated Siva Ratri. Siva Ratri literally translates as "the Night of Lord Siva." Lord Siva is described as "the greatest Vaishnava (devotee of Lord Krishna). " In honour of this occasion the Sunday "Love" Feast was dedicated to Lord Siva.

The celebrations began with an inspiring class. Speaking about the glories of Lord Siva, Rupanuga das had the assembled devotees hanging off his every word! This was followed by an abhisheka (bathing ceremony) which was performed to a deity of Lord Siva in the form of Gopeshvara Mahadev. Arati was also performed to the beautiul altar for Lord Siva which had been created in the temple room. Following the arati devotees were given the opportunity to offer flowers and bilva leaves to Lord Siva.

The evening was capped of with an sublime 8pm arati and a sumptuous vegetarian feast. As a special treat the festivities fell on Valentines Day and Their Lordship Sri Sri Radha Ksira-Chora Gopinatha were beautifully decorated with hearts!

Prabhupada Smaranam
Prabhupada in Mayapur

This appears to be a photo of Prabhupada relaxing in his room at Sridhama Mayapura. The wall is painted white and he's lying back against the white bolster. He said Bombay was his office, Vrindavana was his residence and Mayapura was his place of worship. He called it his world headquarters. The yearly GBC meeting were held there and an annual Mayapura Gaura Purnima festival took place there, which he expected all his disciples to attend. When a disciple said it was very expensive to expect all the devotees to come to India for the Mayapura Gaura Purnima festival, Prabhupada said, "Food prices keep going up but people don't stop eating so they should keep coming to Mayapura." It took many years to build the spacious quarters and temple and construction is still going on with the main planetarium building still not constructed. The largest Deity worship in all of ISKCON is conducted at Mayapura including extra large Radha-Madhava and eight sakhis, full-size Pancha Tattva murtis and full-size and fierce Nrsimhadeva with Prahlada Maharaja. Only Radha-Madhava were installed when Prabhupada was present. Prabhupada liked staying in Mayapura. He enjoyed the mild weather which was not as harsh as Vrndavana and he referred to Mayapura's "Vaikuntha breezes." But there was so much construction going on during his years that he was sometimes forced to leave because of the "chip!-chip!" sound of the hammers on the marble. During the Mayapura festival he would be present with several hundred devotees for two weeks at a time before they had to return to their preaching centers around the world. He would lecture from Srimad-Bhagavatam every morning. First he would go on a morning walk in the agricultural fields. Returning from the walk, devotees would greet him with a kirtana. He would circumambulate the temple several times, stopping each time he reached the big bell, and tugging it with a rope so that it rang loudly. The devotees danced around him wildly. He then sat on the vyasasana while they sang guru-puja and came up to offer him flowers. The lecture would take about forty-five minutes. He didn't take questions. He would return to his room and take a breakfast of fruits. His secretary would arrange meetings. Sometimes he would hold a late morning initiation ceremony or it would be a quiet morning without meetings. Sometimes he would talk with his cook about what he would have for lunch. Around 11:00 A.M. he would take his massage, following it with a bath taken by pouring water over his head, warmed by an electric cable. After lunch he would take a nap. In the afternoon he would meet people or answer mail. While the GBC meeting went on he would hear the day's GBC resolutions and approve or disapprove them. His vote was final. Sometimes when it became dusk, he would allow devotees to fill his room and he would talk informally. Sometimes the electric power failed and a devotee would come in with burning charcoals and incense to chase the mosquitoes. He would sometimes talk until nine or ten and then dismiss the devotees. He would take rest around ten or eleven and rise around 1:00 A.M. to begin his translating and commentary. If the electric power failed they would run a generator. He stayed at his literary labor until around 4:00 A.M. when he would begin chanting japa. Prabhupada was very regulated and he kept his schedule even when there were hundreds of extra devotees present. It was a great treat for the world-wide devotees to see and be with Srila Prabhupada in the years 1972 to 1977 at annual festival at Mayapura which then moved on for a week to Vrndavana. In a lecture in the Mayapura temple room in 1975 he stated that Bhaktivinoda Thakura's prediction that the Bengali devotees would join with devotees from other parts of the world and chant Hare Krishna together—had actually taken place.

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: The Countdown to Gaura Purnima & Holi Celebrations Begins!

The Hare Krishna Centre would like to warmly invite you to join us for grand Gaura Purnima and Holi Celebrations on Sunday, February 28, 2010!

Holi, one of the most popular festivals in India, marks the beginning of spring. Although there will be no throwing of coloured powders during the festival, it will certainly be a festive event. For Hare Krishnas, this day not only marks Holi, but also Gaura Purnima, the appearance anniversary of Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Gaura Purnima, one of the largest festivals at Toronto's Hare Krishna temple, is the celebration of the appearance of Lord Caitanya, who is none other than Lord Krishna Himself. Over 500 years ago, in a special appearance, Lord Krishna personally came as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and acted as His own devotee by propagating the chanting of the Holy names of the Lord in every town and village!

Stay tuned for more information about the festivals!

Japa Group: We Should Take Full Advantage

I was thinking this today before chanting Japa....we have the knowledge how to chant properly and we know about the offenses and how to avoid inattention - the next step we must take is to put this knowledge into practise and to take a step towards the Lord.....to show Him we are serious about knowing Him and having a relationship with Him through the Holy names.

In the end it's all up to us - to take that step towards the Lord and to chant with great attention and avoid the offenses. We have this extremely rare chance to chant the Holy names, this is our greatest fortune and we should take full advantage to chant the Holy names properly with devotion.

Jaya Kesava Das, USA: KENYA EAGER EYES

Our six hour flight from Mumbai was quite an easy one and Jet lag was practically nonexistent. After 16 years I was back in Africa, this time with a mission and a vision. Although I had never been to Kenya certain scenes are similar- the marketplace, the colorful dress etc etc. Nairobi is a full blown city and our temple is smack in the middle of it with various programs for teaching Krsna consciousness. Many locals came to our Saturday programs and the gathering stayed alive with amazing questions from the students. Getting my visa to South Africa occupied a lot of my time and so I didn't get to explore as I wanted to. I especially hoped to visit Masai communities. They are known as the most intelligent tribe of people in Africa. Next time maybe. Four days later we flew to Kisumu to visit our other temple there- So beautiful and cozy with garden, fountains and much more. We took a drive to our property on Lake Victoria, green fertile land, beautiful Lake Victoria to the west, Papyrus reeds everywhere and as we learned, Hippos graze there every night! If you see a hip hip hippo pot a mus!

As we drove by I lifted my head just in time to see a cherished site- a Masai! He was dressed in Saffron cloth wrapped around his waist, a blue and purple shawl, and he carried a stick wrapped in yellow cloth. So regal! I've wanted to see these people since I was a weee weeeeee one, and there, going to Lake Victoria was a Masai. Next morning we drove to Kampala Uganda, passing some baboons on the way, The Nile river and other natural sights.

I'll be writing more soon :) No fun just giving all away here, plus I'm jet lagged having just landed in Johannesburg!

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: Blogging Hare Krishna Valley in Australia

http://www.harekrishnavalley.com.au/blog/

I just thought I would give you a brief report on what has gone on at Hare Krishna Valley in recent months. We have planted pumpkin, zucchini, eggplant and tomatoes, which will all be ready for harvesting in the near future. Manigriva prabhu has been delivering our organic produce to the Melbourne temple on a weekly basis.

We have all but completed the kitchen renovation, and it has turned out to look like a first class catering facility. This has allowed us to register the kitchen with the Surf Coast Shire. The main things that are left to do are to put in a new vinyl floor and replace the cover of the rainwater tank. Mahajana prabhu has kindly offered to supply the flooring for this job.

We have also completed the garden along the front of the temple building, which also looks quite impressive. We have had a number of WWOOFers and other volunteers helping us in the last few months, and this has allowed us to get alot done and make the place look presentable for guests. Three of the volunteers who stayed with us left chanting Hare Krishna on a regular basis, and are preparing to return again soon.

The New Garden

We have now begun the big task of painting the temple building. Hopefully with enough help we should be able to complete this task in a few weeks, and then begin painting the inside of the building.

We have also hosted two successful retreats with His Holiness Devamrta Swami and His Holiness Prahladananda Swami. All those who attended were pleased with the improvement in the facilities, and with the friendly community at Hare Krishna Valley. The Sunday feast in January saw almost 50 guests and congregational members gather for this festive event. We also managed a successful catering event at the Tranquility festival at Ocean Grove with the help of our enthusiastic congregation.

We are planning to post a regular report on our blog to keep all of you informed of progress and events at Hare Krishna Valley.

We look forward to seeing you down here soon.

Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada,

Kesava dasa.
