What a prayer to Prabhupada will do ...

By Maha Buddhi dasa

“Bhaktitirta Swami, who was Ghanasyam before taking sanyasa was on book distribution with me in the 1970’s distributing full sets to the colleges. We went to a small college and found out it was a holiday. Ganasyam decided to give it a try anyway. I said, “Why do you want to waste your time and mine, it’s a small school and it is a holiday!”

Ghanasyam said, “Alright, I’ll just go to the bathroom and be right back. Just in case I find someone I’ll bring some books.”

One hour went by, then two. I was becoming very upset. But I also knew that Ghanasyam sometimes would do amazing things, almost mystical. I decided that I wouldn’t immediately chastise him, first I would find out why he took so long.

When he finally returned I asked him, “Why did you take so long, you were just going to the bathroom?”

He replied,” That’s what I was going to do, but as I was walking to the bathroom I was praying to Prabhupada, “Prabhupada please help me to serve you, I want to please you by distributing your books, please give me your mercy.”

“While I was in the bathroom there was a man in there, and we just started talking. He was a professor of history and religion. I told him about the Srimad Bhagavatam that we distribute and showed him what I had, he was fascinated. We went to his office and he bought a set. Then I asked if he knew if the library was open. He said it wasn’t, but he is a friend of the person in charge and would call him. When he called, his wife said he was on his way to the college to get some things he needed. Ten minutes later he shows up and also bought a set.”

I said, “That’s amazing, I’m impressed. I guess there are no material formulas if we sincerely want to distribute books.”

Prabhu,
Thank you for the story and clear purport.

I have recently read the past time of Advaita Acharya praying for the appearance of the Lord. The purport of this story is that the Lord descends “only” in response to the desire of his sincere devotee.

I am convinced that this is what I need to focus on in my life, and perhaps others would also find this a valuable lesson. If we really want Krishna in our life, we only have to sincerely ask (and be prepared to receive Him).

The thinking of what material arrangements and plans need to be put in place are not what works. What works is very simple and direct and honest–We simply need to possess and express the sincere desire to please Srila Prabhupada, Lord Caitanya and Lord Krishna.

The power of prayer is amazing. Especially the powerful prayers of pure devotees.

When I think of the pastime of Lord Advaita praying for the advent of Lord Caitanya, I am struck with this sense of wonder.

Lord Advaita is the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself, Maha Vishnu (or Sada-Siva). He is fully capable of killing all demons, establishing dharma, protecting devotees, as so many incarnations have done in the past. Yet, instead of doing so Himself, He prayed for the advent of the Most Merciful, Golden Avatar, who displayed His unprecedented pastime of descending in the mood of His beloved Srimati Radharani.

We ourselves could pray for the power to be exceptionally potent preachers, to become famous and have many followers and convey the pure message of Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam throughout the world without ever becoming contaminated by false prestige.

However, I prefer to follow the mood of Lord Advaita and pray to stay in the association and service of others who are empowered preachers of the holy names, and to taste pure bhakti while discharging my duty by assisting such great souls in their service of properly glorifying the books of Srila Prabhupada.

Vandanam, offering prayers, is one of the 9 limbs of devotional practice. It is a very personal interaction between the soul that is praying and the Supreme Lord or His devotee. Krishna will hear the prayers of His devotees, especially when they are praying for devotion, shelter, and service. But, Krishna is completely independent and all-knowing. We may surrender to Krishna, then we must accept His mercy, and what He will give to us. Prahlad was placed through many trials and tribulations, and His prayers were heard by Sri Vishnu. Krishna is not our order supplier, even though we understand that everything is dependent upon Him. We want to develop the mood of devotion in all of our service endeavors, and our prayers for mercy will bear fruit in the form of a softened heart. The beautiful bhajans of our acharyas like Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur and Sri Narottama das Thakur are prayers, and we can learn from these poet-devotees how to pray to Krishna.

By the way, is the Dvarakadhisa das who commented above, the same DDD who Srila Prabhupad affectionately played with as a devotee child? If so, greetings from Pusta Krishna das. If not, greetings from Pusta Krishna das. Hare Krishna.

From our experience as book distributors, we have learnt that we had to be empowered to perform sankirtan and distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books in a successful and truthful, i.e. brahminical, manner…

Direct prayers were a clue, as an expansion of our sadhana and morning program, as well as our constant chanting during the day, in between meeting people, be it door to door or in the open…

But, as depicted in the above story of Ghanasyam Prabhu (Bhakti Tirtha Maharaja to be) this direct prayer’s content is “to be blessed with the opportunity to become instrumental in serving the mission of Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga”…

Just like Arjuna accepted to become an instrument in fulfilling Lord Krishna’s mission…

Similarly, what a great fortune one may have in becoming a das dasanudas of Sri-Sri Gaura-Nitai in their mission of rescuing the fallen souls and claiming them back home, back to Godhead…

Moreover, this seva has to be performed, not for any potential personal glorification, but for the pleasure of our Spiritual Master, which is the only way to lead to ahaituki bhakti…

Yasya parasado Bhagavat prasado…
By pleasing Sri Krishna’s pure devotee, one pleases Krishna…

All glories to the transcendental distribution of Sastras commented by our ISKCON Founder Acarya Srila Prabhupada…

All glories to all the sankirtan lilas and to all the sankirtan devotees…
