Japa Group: Gaining Strength &Chanting MoreThat's an important part of chanting, gaining strength and chanting more and more, but it is not the topmost aspect of chanting. The top most is the quality, the feeling of attachment for Radha and Krishna and the deep attention to Nama Prabhu. I had some of that, but it would have been better if I had more. But I'm satisfied I stayed completely awake and finished my quota so early. From Bhajan Kutir #20

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 20www.sdgonline.org.3:40 A.M.I slept all right and woke at 1:00 A.M. I felt some fog in my head and got up from bed, but the pain didn't develop right away. I started chanting, and it went rapidly. I chanted all 16 rounds before Yadunandana Maharaja came up at 3:30. I was thinking of my writing, but tried to pay attention to the sounds of the names. Most prominent this morning was the accumulation, the moving through from the lower numbers up to the higher numbers. That's an important part of chanting, gaining strength and chanting more and more, but it is not the topmost aspect of chanting. The topmost is the quality, the feeling of attachment for Radha and Krishna and the deep attention to Nama Prabhu. I had some of that, but it would have been better if I had more. But I'm satisfied I stayed completely awake and finished my quota so early. I was no slowpoke, and I did not slur the names but heard each one. It was a good day, but not the best. How do you write about japa? You report the quality, the truth and you try to encourage fellow chanters. But how can you boost them unless you can speak of perfection? Like this: go to the center of your experience and admit you failed that perfection, but pick out the seed, which was the fact that you endured and heard clearly for 16 rounds and stayed awake and actually prayed because chanting is praying, even imperfect.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Readings with Prabhupadawww.sdgonline.org.Prabhupada SmaranamHere is Srila Prabhupada in his backyard garden in Los Angeles. It was a small patch of land which was originally cement, and Karandhara broke it up with a jackhammer. Then they brought in topsoil and grass and planted bushes and flowers. They built a tall wall around it with cinderblocks. They placed an asana with bolsters against the wall for Prabhupada to sit in. It blossomed into a lovely, peaceful spot. Prabhupada used to go out there and sit in the afternoon. About twenty devotees could sit on the grass and be with him. He started a routine of having a devotee read out loud to him from the Krishna Book. Each day he would ask the devotee to open the book at random rather than read it consecutively. He said the Krishna Book was like a sweetball and any side you bit at it, it would be sweet. He was relaxed in his little garden and obviously enjoyed the respite and the reading. He didn't interrupt the reading much to turn it into a lecture, but interjected with comments. When a devotee read the section where Krishna fights the Dvivida Gorilla, Prabhupada commented that Dvivida was not an ordinary gorilla, but to be able to fight with Krishna he must have been very powerful. The devotees did not ask many questions. Once Prabhupada met with a number of religion professors in his garden, and he answered their somewhat challenging questions. But mostly he used the garden for approximately an hour a day for his peaceful Krishna Book readings. He demonstrated that he personally liked to hear the book (he once said that he didn't write the Krishna Book but that Krishna wrote it) and he set the example for his disciples that this was for them; whenever they had time, they should read the Krishna Book. All glories to Prabhupada's Los Angeles garden and his practice of out-loud readings of Krishna Book!

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Far Away and Closewww.sdgonline.org.1. Reaching for Krishna, He's far away. But He's "as close as your jugular vein." How to reconcile it? It's up to you, it's up to Him. If He feels you have a material motive, and not real love or desire to serve, He'll keep you at a distance, like the furthest star. You'll hear His name and it will not move you. You'll hear the poems of Padyavali and find no delight. God is distant to you, and even if you try, there's too much interference between you. 2. If you meet a pure devotee, and come close to him serving him in devotion, it will change. He has the key to Krishna's residence and can let you in the back door. By engaging you in regular service–buying bhoga for the Deity, selling Krishna's books, chanting Hare Krishna on the street and in the privacy of your beads– engaging all your acts in relation to Krishna, you'll start to feel He's real and close. He will reveal to you the taste of nectar in His holy names, the beauty of His cowherd form, and the exciting adventures of His pastimes. Krishna doesn't have to be far away like God in Heaven, sitting on His throne making final judgments but otherwise unconnected to your life. He can be your closest friend, your well-wisher in your heart, and always with you in your private hours.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Moving inwww.sdgonline.org.Healing HouseThe house is mostly finished for living in by the inmates. Nara just had a bathroom constructed. He has a ruptured disc in his back and went to Mexico for medical treatments. We are eagerly awaiting his return. Swami Rupa hopes that his caretakers will be satisfied to stay with him in the Healing House. He feels he needs them. Ollie is presently in Delaware picking up Nara's belongings, so the Swami is without both of them. He misses them but tries his best to absorb himself in writing. He posts a daily journal on a website. You dig within yourself to find something to say. Saci is taking his eight-year-old son, Laksman, to Yankee Stadium tomorrow. They have seats near the grass in right field. Laksman said he wanted seats near first base near Mark Teixeira. read more from SDGonline - daily updates Viraha Bhavan journal

Hari Sauri das, Mayapura, IN: 2010 Tour – Karlovac – Susukum BhaktaI wanted to mention one special devotee in Karlovac. His name is Raghunatha prabhu. He drove me and Radhe Govinda prabhu to the health spa. He also took a dip himself (seen here on the left): He’s a keen soccer player, and a good bhajan singer also. And he’s a really nice, gentle, humble guy, keen to serve and always busy in his duties. Nothing unusual about that, you might think. An ordinary, likeable undistinguished devotee (although no devotee is undistinguished). Until you know that he was a conscripted soldier in the recent Balkans war, stepped on a land mine and had his foot blown off. It is devotees like Raghunatha that give me hope and make me a lot more thankful and appreciative for the opportunities and facilities that life (Krsna!) has thrown my way. He’s making the most use of his bad bargain and without resentment or complaint. He’s a great example for all of us as to what being a humble servant really means and a good example of Krsna’s claim in Bhagavad-gita that devotional service is “susukum kartum” ‘joyfully performed’ no matter what the circumstances.
