The devotee should regard desirable and undesirable conditions equally. The householder should be detached from his family. He should take care of his family and fulfill his responsibilities, but he should not let his family stand in the way of his service to Krishna.

Kirtans in Oxford, UK: Ratha-yatra on Sunday

We found out last month that the London Ratha-yatra festival, to which so many of our regular chanters go, clashed with our June date, so we've changed our June kirtan to 27th. We hope this doesn't inconvenience anyone.

The annual Ratha-yatra is a colourful and kirtan-exuberant street festival and if you're free on Sunday, you may like to take part. You can find out the details here and here. It's great fun and a tremendous atmosphere. Maybe we'll see you there!

Pictured above is Jahnavi, leading kirtan at last year's festival.

Kirtans in Oxford, UK: We Say Goodbye to Meru...

Our June kirtan was tinged with sadness as we said farewell to the founder of the Kirtan Experience in Oxford - Meru Ostland - who left a few days later to return to Sweden, whence she came. As well as the inspiration behind the monthly kirtans, Meru was also a great singer and led many chants for us, with spirit and a strong voice. What's more she is a top class cook and her banquets, once tasted, are never forgot. Meru we miss you!

Nevertheless, we put a brave face on it and the June kirtan was very sweet, with Meru and Gopal taking turns to lead.

Gopal on harmonium.

Shaunaka on mridanga (clay drum).

Tea and biscuits at the end.

3:53 A.M.

Namamrta by A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:

To avoid pride one should chant the Hare Krishna mantra incessantly:

"When Vasudeva, the leper brahmana, was lamenting due to not being able to see Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the Lord immediately returned to that spot and embraced him. When Caitanya Mahaprabhu touched him, both the leprosy and his distress went to a distant place. Indeed, Vasudeva's body became very beautiful to his great happiness…Being meek and humble, Vasudeva worried that he would become proud after being cured by the grace of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. To protect the brahmana, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu advised him to chant the Hare Krishna mantra incessantly, by doing so he would never become unnecessarily proud. (Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Madhya lila 7.140 -151, 150, 146-147)

In the Siksastakam Lord Caitanya tells us that we should chant in a humble state of mind and then we can chant incessantly. In that case He is telling us that we should use our will and behavior to be humble. But in this verse the opposite is being said. That is, by chanting, one becomes humble. Chanting produces humility. You feel yourself tiny, an atom of dust at the lotus feet of the Lord and you feel repentant for your offensive chanting. You become humble when you chant and there is no chance of becoming proud over bodily beauty or good fortune. You just become a humble chanter, and you keep it up to protect yourself from pride. Last night Baladeva told me a story at bedtime, and I could not get to sleep. At 9:30 I took some sleep medicine and got to sleep. I woke up at 1:20 and began my chanting. I was afraid I was not able to chant sixteen rounds by 3:30. Again I had that thought that it was like a time bomb that would go off if I didn't chant before 3:30. I timed my chanting. I chanted [a 108 mantras by 3:04 A.M, 216 mantras by 3:10 A.M, 324 mantras by 3:13 A.M , 432 mantras by 3:19 A.M. and I finished] 16 rounds at 25 after. So I made it without an "explosion" I even had time for a decent gayatri mantra. My chanting had an emphasis on numerical count and speedy chanting, but it was also attentive to the syllables and the sound. Chanting fast is not a bad thing. But you cannot sacrifice the quality and just go like a razor. I tried my best but with emphasis on avoiding falling short of sixteen rounds before 3:30.

Chanting a round in
something like seven minutes.
You push the speed
but avoid stress by
doing it silently in the
mind. It's a pleasure
to see you can keep
swift time, and you'll
make your quota before
it's too late. Haridasa
Thakura must have chanted
quickly, and Raghunatha
too but there was no
question of rush or
superficial speed. They
were immersed in Krishna prema
and linked their
mantras with thoughts of
Radha-Krishna in the
names divine. I
chant quickly like driving
a Chevy Corvette, but
try to keep my eyes
and ears fixed on the road
and avoid a crush.

One Hundred Prabhupada Poems # 22

Ran through those memories quickly
then stopped and said I can't remember more.
Fortunate. Funny stories now.
Brief flame rises when I tell.
Most of these boys and girls weren't even
born then. LSD, Lower East Side,
even the Swami is another world.

Went through those memories and
I can do it again, just ask me.
I can tell it and it's jolly and sad
and primitive…never mind, it is
what it is. No one can judge it.
They live in their own in
an imagined memory state—
Swamiji in summer with
no kurta just dhoti and sannyasa top
piece…no photograph can capture
the inner state. He said my name
means inner form of truth.
Another time I entered when
they were burning birthday candles
and sticking them to the table top
"to increase your devotion"
during autumn, Kartika.
He said, "Here comes the truth
personified." He gave me typing.
He gave me life to break away from
most degraded habits.

I became quickly
one of the Swami's boys,
remain so to this day.
Remember for audiences wherever
I go,
call it an art, a show performed,
my '66 monologue,
I clown it, be serious,
poeticize, it's all true,
he really did give out ISKCON bullets,
I really did phone him from my
office and said "Swamiji, this is Steve.
Remember me? I can't come to lunch
at one today. Can you save something for me?"
And when I went to him he
put the prasadam on the floor and
I bowed down
"If you love me, I will love you"
is still in my ears.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Poem from Under Dark Stars

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

1.
It opens with '66 memories
of playing with our guru.
You can do that with him,
a delicate balance of fun
and gravity-respect. "Jai-ho,
Swamiji." "Leave me now. This store
will open at 6 in the morning." Laughing and joking and asking
serious questions, a delightful
combination, an evening in his room.

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: Free Write

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

I turned at random to Canto Ten, chapter two, "Prayers by the Demigods," text 36: "Oh Lord Your transcendental name and form are not ascertained by those who merely speculate on the path of imagination. Your name, form and attributes can be ascertained only through devotional service." In his purport Prabhupada repeatedly says the nondevotee persons, even if scholars, think Krishna is fictitious. Fictitious. They don't believe He is the eternal Supreme Lord. Even "slightly advanced" people cannot understand Him. Yet they dare to make commentaries on Bhagavad-gita and other historical records. Krishna can only be understood by one who is fully engaged in Krishna consciousness. Only by sevan mukha, by engaging one self in the Lord's service can one understand His name, form and qualities.

The pure devotees are considered liberated even in this body. The Lord is not here on the earth right now in His manifested form. He was here five thousand years ago (and five hundred years ago as Lord Caitanya). But pure devotees can appreciate His presence and believe in Him by hearing and chanting of His activities in Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. You just have to hear from a pure devotee spiritual master and engage in his service. The present devotees see the Lord through authority and through history. They don't speculate on Him but accept Him fully. Srila Rupa Goswami says that by affection and love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the devotees can express their mind to Him with their words. Others can not do this. What is my position? I am a neophyte, but I am not a disbeliever or a speculator. I believe in Krishna and wish to develop my love for Him. To do this I will have to develop my practical service and worship. I want to attain Krishna's lotus feet but I have to continually absorb myself in His service. I pray for His help.

To fill a page with free writing I have to accept what comes to my mind. It is a little like writing those poems from 2003 in Under Dark Stars. Or I can mix that with telling of my little life like saying we are having ravioli today with either sage butter or tomato sauce and bread and subji. But it will first be offered to Gaura Nitai. In the purport Saci read to me from the Cc., Prabhupada said devotees should never take food from the karmis or food that is not offered to the Lord. He also said that devotees should lead lives of vairagya and not indulge in fine clothes or fancy conveyances. He told how Haridasa Thakura was very renounced and was living in a cottage (or sometimes a cave) and sat before the tulasi plant and chanted three hundred thousand names a day of the Hare Krishna mantra. He said devotees should not try to imitate Haridasa Thakura's quota because that is possible only for him. But they should chant sixteen rounds daily and offer respect to the tulasi plant. It is very hard to keep tulasi plants through the frigid winters of Upstate New York. I heard a devotee tried keeping them last year but they left their bodies. We have to do what is possible according to time and place.

Both at Saci's house and here we worship Radha Krishna and Prabhupada. We also worship large Gaura Nitai. We bath Them and polish Them and change Their clothes once a week and offer Them all our food and vases of flowers. Mostly we enjoy Their darshana and render simple service standard. Yesterday while Baladeva and I walked in Saci's backyard, his children, Lakshman (age 7) and Bhagi (Subhadra age 11) were jumping on a trampoline. I foolishly asked her if it was the first time she was using the trampoline. She replied, "Billions and millions of times." Baladeva asked Laksman to show us his best move. He jumped up and down a few times and then did a complete flip in the air and landed on his feet. Bhagi tried it and did the flip but did not land on her feet. The yard is scattered with baseballs, footballs, a catchers mitt, a catchers mask and walnut shells.

I usually contact a late morning headache. Narayana asked me to take the medicine before the pain even arrives but I keep forgetting to do that or I think it's too much. After taking the medicine I lay back in a reclining chair and the ache gradually subsides. I'm lucky nowadays. They used to be beyond the control of simple medicine. But they come regularly, and I accept the retired life. Writing is like breathing; I must do it as long as I wish to live. I can't see doing without it.

Australian News: Memories of Srila Prabhupada: The Video

There are now 50 DVDs in the "Memories of Srila Prabhupada" series. Number 50 is a two hour DVD containing incredible stories never before heard that give us insight into how to live our lives according to the example set by Srila Prabhupada and gives us glimpses into the glories of His Divine Grace.

A review by Ambarisa dasa: When I see these videos, its like having Srila Prabhupada’s association again. Not only is it a living testimony of the remarkable transcendental personality of Srila Prabhupada, but we are also reminded of the wonderful association of our Godbrothers. These video remembrances make our short time with Srila Prabhupada seem so real and personal. We are reminded again and again that not only was he the Founder-Acarya, but also our loving father and humorous best friend. The association of a pure devotee is exceedingly rare and unique. Whatever we can do to capture the experience for future generations is an invaluable service.

See the Illumination Television web site here more more YouTube clips and more information about the DVD’s.
