Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: Get High and Never Come Down

Dear devotees

Central Station, Sydney, 3 March 2010

I set out with Bhakta Oliver, a German devotee and another Auckland Loft success story. He had been approached by a sankirtan devotee but had declined the SB 1.1 -- only to return to his hostel and find the same book on the shelf! At that point, being the wise soul that he is, he surrendered to the Loft programs. Every day for a few months he helped the devotees there, and then he moved into the Auckland/Sydney Brahmacari ashram.

Bhakta Oliver and myself went on sankirtan and....

Two young men approached me in a timid mood.

"Ahh . . . Do you know where to get any weed?"

(For all you pure devotees out there, Ã'weedÃ" is a street name for marijuana, an illegal drug known for its ability to cover the soul with smoke.)

Ã'Oh, so you want to get high?Ã" I said, full of confidence, knowing I had the real deal, the highest-grade gear available for them.

Ã'I come form Nimbin,Ã" I informed them with great authority. Ã'Do you know where that is?Ã"

Ã'Yes,Ã" they said with a look of astonishment. Ã'We are going there tomorrow!Ã"

(Nimbin is a little hippie town in the hills of northern N.S.W. (Aus), only a few hills away from the New Govardhana farm, where I grew up (a little too close, unfortunately). Sadly, I know the tama scene too well from my juvenile delinquent days. But this was another chance to dovetail.)

Ã'Well, I smoked dope for too many years to count. I tried all the different types and styles. And IÕll tell what: ThereÕs no satisfaction! Only lung contraction!Ã"

Accepting my qualifications, they began to listen with rapt attention.

Ã'Yes,Ã" I continued, Ã'you smoke dope and get some temporary illusion of stress relief. But ultimately you come crashing down, confused and demented, with your black-tar-plugged lungs fighting for breath and your wallet empty from being ripped off by the local street thugs.

Ã'Why do we need it, anyway? Is life that bad that we need to make it worse by over-endeavoring to accumulate money to support our drug habit as well as the dealerÕs?

Ã'Not if you got knowledge, my pleasure-seeking friends!

Ã'If you wanna get high and never come down, then this book is where itÕs at!Ã"

And I ran them through an interesting presentation of the pictures in the BG, explaining how weÕre not the body, weÕre the soul, and one who understands this lives a life of ever-increasing spiritual bliss, etc.

Throughout the whole spontaneous presentation, I had my doubts that they would be convinced, due to their one-pointed focus on finding some moldy old flowers that smell like and resemble stool. But, as the Supersoul always does, He surprised me by inspiring one of them to say:

Ã'Wow! That was a good speech. Ok, IÕll take one.Ã"

And he pulled out $15 -- which wouldÕve certainly been wasted on some chemically-infused marijuana on the streets of Sydney -- and gave it to Krsna while expressing his gratitude for the awakening presentation. Haribol!!!

I gave him details to keep in touch and, offering my respect to the Supersoul within their hearts, waved good-bye.

Bhakta Oliver witnessed the whole underground operation going down in the back streets of Sydney with amazement.

Oliver and I both concluded that we should take every opportunity to connect people to Krsna and use all our experiences, good and bad, to aid that goal. After all, Srila Prabhupada turned hippies into happies, right?

Getting high off the transcendental dust from KrsnaÕs lotus feet ki jai!!!

Srila Prabhupada ki jai!!!!

Kurma dasa, AU: Corny Olde Blogge: Here's One We Made Earlier

This is an article that sunk to the bottom of my TTB ('things to blog') list and surfaced again yesterday. When corn was juicy and in full season here in Sydney I whipped up a batch, and served them with some nice sticky Japanese short-grain rice and a peanut sauce.

corn fritters:

Indonesian Crispy Corn Fritters (Perkedel Jagung)

Although rice is the staple diet of most of the people of Indonesia, corn is another important mainstay, especially in the drier eastern provinces, and also during the dry season in the whole of Indonesia. Corn is prepared in many ways, this being one of the most tasty. Serve crispy Perkedel Jagung alongside rice dishes, accompanied with a sauce or relish, or alone with just a squeeze of lemon.

PREPARATION AND COOKING TIME: 40–50 minutes, YIELD: about 25 fritters

2 1/2 cups raw corn kernels fresh from the cob, about 3 or 4 large cobs 3 large hot green chilies, seeded and chopped, 1/2 cup plain flour, 1/2 cup rice flour, 1/4 teaspoon baking powder, 2 teaspoons salt, 2 teaspoons coriander powder, 1 teaspoon sugar, 1⁄2 teaspoon cayenne pepper or chili powder, 1 teaspoon yellow asafetida powder, oil for frying, 6 candle nuts, or large macadamia nuts, up to 3⁄4 cup cold water, packed 1⁄2 cup chopped celery leaves and stalk,

Coarsely chop or crush the corn kernels to form a mixture of whole and semi-crushed pieces.

Combine the flour, rice flour, baking powder, salt, coriander powder, sugar, cayenne and yellow asafetida powder in a large bowl.

Pour a few tablespoons of oil into a small saucepan over moderate heat. Drop in the candle nuts or macadamia nuts and fry them until they are golden brown and aromatic. Remove, drain and slightly cool the nuts, then grind them to a powder in a spice mill or coffee grinder.

Add three-quarters of the water to the bowl of flour and spices, and whisk it to form a very thick batter. Fold in the corn, the nut powder, the celery, and the chilies. Adjust the consistency with extra water, if required, to form a thick but spoonable batter.

Place oil in a 22.5cm (9-inch) frying pan to a depth of 1.25cm (1⁄2-inch) over moderate heat. When the oil is fairly hot, carefully spoon in 6–8 heaped tablespoons of batter, flattening them into circular fritters. Fry them for 3 or 4 minutes, or until the undersides of the fritters are golden brown. Turn the fritters over with kitchen tongs and fry them until the other side is also golden brown. Remove and place on absorbent paper towels to dry.

Repeat for all the fritters, and serve hot.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Srila Prabhupada praises a statement by Vivekananda

...the modern civilization, according to Darwin's theory, they are advancing to become animal. That's it. Therefore they are claiming their forefathers are coming from monkeys. That somebody said on the other day, Vivekananda was asked that "Why your Indian forefathers did not come, long years ago?" He answered, "Because your forefathers were jumping in the tree." (laughter) It is very nice answer. "Our forefathers did not come because your forefathers were jumping in the tree."

Phanisvara das, Mayapura, IN: 21 seconds of kirtan

an hour ago or so i was listening to kirtanradio and noticed this kirtan. i've heard it before, but also then didn't know who was singing or what the occasion was. i'd like to know that and hope one of you can tell me.

You are missing some Flash content that should appear here! Perhaps your browser cannot display it, or maybe it did not initialize correctly.

quality is lousy, unfortunately. it doesn't sound like that over my amplifier, but recording directly (audacity) from my audio player (amarok 2) gets grossly distorted.

i had to perform some noise-filtering, otherwise those 21 sec would have been worse; it's far from the original sound now, but should be recognizable. does anybody know who this is?

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: Fearlessness

It is the responsibility of the husband to give his wife fearlessness.

How one awards fearlessness to his subordinate is mentioned in the Fifth Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam.

One who cannot get free from the clutches of death is dependent, and he should not become a spiritual master, nor a husband, nor a kinsman, nor a father, nor a mother, etc.

It is the duty of the superior to give fearlessness to the subordinate.

To take charge of someone, therefore, either as father, mother, spiritual master, relative or husband, one must accept the responsibility to give his ward freedom from the fearful situation of material existence.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: '421' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

2:51 A.M.

I woke up at twelve midnight with a headache and took medicine, but then I couldn't sleep and got up from bed at 12:30. Yesterday Baladeva's reading to me in Caitanya Caritamrita was helpful for chanting. He read from the section of the talks between the Lord and Ramananda Raya. Caitanya Mahaprabhu asked Ramananda Raya a series of questions. He asked him, "Of the many capitalists who posseses great riches, who is the topmost?" Ramananda Raya replied, "He who is richest in love for Radha and Krishna is the greatest capitalist." He asked him which song is to be considered the actual religion of the living entity. Ramananda Raya replied, "That song describing the loving affairs of Radha and Krishna is far superior to other songs." Lord Caitanya asked, "What should living entities constantly remember?" Ramananda Raya replied, "The chief objects of remembrance are always the Lord's holy names, qualities and pastimes." Lord Caitanya inquired, "Out of many types of meditations which is required for all living entities?" Srila Ramananda Raya replied, "The chief duty of every living entity is to meditate upon the lotus feet of Radha and Krishna." Lord Caitanya asked, "Out of all the topics people listen to which is the best? " Ramananda Raya replied, "Hearing about the loving affairs between Radha and Krishna is the most pleasing to hear." Lord Caitanya asked, "Among all worshipable objects which is the chief?" Ramananda Raya replied, "The chief worshipable object is the holy name of Radha and Krishna the Hare Krishna mantra."  Please help me to connect my chanting to Radha and Krishna the same Radha and Govinda who stand on my altar and on all the altars in Prabhupada's temples. My chanting was not rushed because I knew I had plenty of time. And although I had gotten up early, I wasn't the least bit sleepy. I chanted at a good pace and alertly. I'm on my seventeenth round. I'll be sleepy later, but the japa session was above average. It's Krishna's mercy when you can stay alert and concentrated while chanting the Hare Krishna mantra and that you can chant by the hour without having to let down.

Up very early is like
having riches to spend.
You just relax and
you chant with time to spare.
Fortunately, your body holds
up, doesn't hurt, doesn't drowse
and you remember what
Ramananda Raya said about
Radha and Krishna. The
mind wanders to other things,
to distractions from yesterday,
but you bring it back to
this morning's whispering
and before Narayana even arrives,
you've finished your
quota. You could do more.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Drops of Nectar: In Vrndavana' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Prabhupada smaranam

the back of the group of devotees on a walk with Prabhupada in Vrindavana.

In the 1970s, when Srila Prabhupada went for a morning walk on the main road from Vrindavana towards New Delhi, it was secluded and lush trees lined the roadway. Twenty people could gather around him and walk beside him. Now it is completely different. The sides of the road are all built up with many storied buildings, hotels, temples, and businesses. The trees are chopped down or thinned out. In the 70s when I rode on a rickshaw down the roads I had a "vision" and thought I was in Vrindavana in the spiritual world, or at least I felt I was close to that. I wrote many haiku poems inspired by the atmosphere.

Vrindavana is now congested with constant traffic jams with horns making a cacophony of irritation and disturbance. Aggressive monkeys have increased ten times from forty years ago, and they fearlessly and expertly steal spectacles, fruit, clothing, etc.

The place that used to be a peaceful garden and forest with pure Yamuna water is now a bedlam of harsh sounds and polluted river water. The river is dirty because the industrial waste from New Delhi is now dumped into the Yamuna. Telephone communication and even internet have improved the communications, but these material advancements don't make up for the loss of the peace and purity that once reigned in Vrindavana.

It is said that the nasty material covering over Vrindavana is put there directly by Yogamaya to keep away less sincere people. But is has become increasingly hard to contact the spiritual level underneath the material covering. Pilgrims going to Vrindavana must be sincerely seeking Krishna. Then they can still find Him in the holy places like Govardhan, the parikrama trails and the major temples of Radha Krishna. Prabhupada has established the Krishna Balarama Mandir which maintains a high level of genuine Vrindavana sanctity with beautiful deity worship and the twenty-four hour kirtanas. By his foresight he has preserved the transcendental life of Vrindavana in its best temple and deities. By going to Vrindavana and chanting and hearing, the devotees can overcome the dirty covering of maya in Kali-yuga and contact the spiritual layer. We should be thankful to Prabhupada for preserving a section of Vrindavana in purity.

ISKCON Toronto, Canada: Bhaktivaibhava Swami to Debut "Lost Village" This Sunday!

H.H. Bhaktivaibhava Swami and the producers of the documentary Mother Ganga have launched another documentary project, Lost Village, inspired by the story of H.H.Lokanath Swami. This Sunday, H.H. Bhaktivaibhava Swami will be visiting The Hare Krishna Centre to debut this new production.

For the first time in human history, a smaller proportion of the global population now lives in rural areas, states the United Nations statistics from June 2006. The twentieth century witnessed the rapid urbanization of the world's population. As a result villages have been eclipsed in importance, as units of human society, settlement and traditions. This issue is being dealt with by the documentary Lost Village. Lost Village aims to explore that simple way of life, which is crucial to the solution of ecological problems and social dilemmas.

Lost Village is not the story of one village or one villager, but a story of 500 thousand villages in India and millions throughout the world endangered to vanish from the face of the Earth.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Takes Away Everything' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Free write

There is not much left of this man. He has to walk with two sticks and his legs are not much more than skinny sticks. His torso is bent, and he can hardly walk forward. Maybe he is in Vrindavana. His body is in no condition to work so he probably begs for his food. He is wearing a cloth bag around his neck that resembles a japa mala bag. He is very much encumbered, but maybe he is fortunate, if he is chanting. In the Srimad-Bhagavatam, Krishna states that His first favor on a devotee is to take away all his material fortune, so that no one will care for him, and he will turn completely dependent on Krishna. If this man is in this frame of mind he is lucky. It depends on whether he has turned himself over to Krishna.

Japa Group: Japa Tips: Night Before

Night before - Give up rice and eating heavy foods at night. Take simple foods such as milk and fruits. By eating a light meal you will sleep soundly, rise early without difficulty and have full energy for attentive japa the next morning. The night before make asankalpa or firm vow:

"Tomorrow morning, I will chant with full concentration and sincere feelings."

Upon waking, take a full bath or at least wash the mouth, face, hands and feet with cold water before chanting.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: DOG'S PHILOSOPHY

One dog was crossing over a small rivulet, and he saw the picture of another dog in the water. Actually, there was no other dog, but that was his own reflection.

He was carrying some food in his mouth, so when he looked at the water he thought, "Let me take his foodstuff from the mouth," and as he opened the mouth, whatever he had, it was gone.

This is dog philosophy, "Take away." Take other's meal, but he loses his own. This is called illusion, maya.

Similarly, Roman Empire was expanded. The British Empire was expanded. Now they have lost everything. Finished. The dog's business was finished.

So this kind of expansion, unnecessarily, is not good.

Therefore our philosophy is "Be satisfied with whatever God has given you."

Tena tyaktena bhunjitha ma grdhah kasya svid dhanam [Isopanisad]. Be satisfied with whatever is given to you by God. Don't try to encroach upon other's property.

This is civilization.

Madri dd, South Africa: BCEC Japa, Kirtan and Bhajan Program at Iskcon Pretoria

Last weekend 65 devotees participated in a Japa, kirtan and bhajan program hosted by Bhaktivedanta College of Education and Culture at Iskcon Pretoria. The program was held over three days. On the third day participants chanted japa from 1.30am. Part of the objectives for choosing to conduct such a program at the local Iskcon centre was to create an awareness of the reason Srila Prabhupada created so many centres around the world. Indeed Srila Prabhupada institued a full morning program to provide spiritual strength for his followers. Many participants in the above program felt inspired to continue to attend the morning programs on an on going basis.

Some comments from participants were as follows:
Leanne Pillay: "The program addressed my doubts and bad habits before I could voice them and helped me deepen my relationship with the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna through His holy names."
Radhanam Dasi: "This program was an eye opener. I wish I had learnt all of this knowledge right in the beginning of my Krishna consciousness, but better late than never."
Ngobile Simelane: "The program made me aware how not to miss the real point of this human life and to cherish this gift that Srila Prabhupada so mercifully benedicted us with."
Estelle Crowngold: "The association of devotees provides so much spiritual strength especially to perform spiritual austerities."
Mercy Pakela: "This program is a must for every person. I take with me such a welth of knowledge for self improvement."
Sundarananda dasa: "I realized that I could have made a lot of spiritual progress in the years gone by had I known this very important knowledge. I look forward to a brilliant future."

As co facilitator with my husband HG Nrsimhananda Prabhu I felt completely inspired to see the process that Srila Prabhupada so compassionately gave us work wonderful miracles in the lives of so many.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: Personal Instruction

Question: Can one do more for people by giving them personal instruction?

Answer: One who gives personal instruction to each and everyone does more for others than the platform speakers do. Generally, whatever platform speakers say cannot solve the problem of everyone in the audience, nor can it always benefit every individual. A person's defects are better rectified in a private tutorial class or private coaching than in hearing lectures in a school or college. Therefore those who instruct particular persons separately can award them something more permanent.

Kirtans in Oxford, UK: Spring Kirtans.

Our March and April kirtans were resplendent with many jars of golden daffodils, tastefully arranged by Shyama.

Jahnavi and Tulasi Harrison (golden-haired!) were our guest kirtaniyas in March, delighting us with their musicality and sweet, meditative chanting. Everyone seems to have got the hang now of clapping along in rhythm, so it was a rousing kirtan!

Jahnavi spoke a little about her experiences last year on the Mantralogy tour, bringing kirtan to five continents. After chanting with all kinds of people, from all kinds of cultures, from the very poor to the very rich, the whacky to the highly respectable, the young and old, she came to the conclusion that "kirtan is for everyone"; everyone likes it and everyone can feel it's beneficial effects. Jahnavi has just left England again for New York, to spend some months there with Gaura Vani and his kirtan band, As Kindred Spirits. We'll keep you posted of any interesting developments there.

For April's kirtan, our own local, home-grown, organic kirtaniyas, Shyama, Rembert and Meru, led us in a variety of chants, including the very ancient "om namo bhagavate vasudevaya". It was the fourth anniversary of The Kirtan Experience in Oxford and we celebrated with cake!

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: You Are What You Grow

Click here to read the article from the award-winning journalist Michael Pollen from the New York Times

"A public-health researcher from Mars might legitimately wonder why a nation faced with what its surgeon general has called "an epidemic" of obesity would at the same time be in the business of subsidizing the production of high-fructose corn syrup. But such is the perversity of the farm bill: the nation's agricultural policies operate at cross-purposes with its public-health objectives. And the subsidies are only part of the problem. The farm bill helps determine what sort of food your children will have for lunch in school tomorrow. The school-lunch program began at a time when the public-health problem of America's children was undernourishment, so feeding surplus agricultural commodities to kids seemed like a win-win strategy.

Today the problem is overnutrition, but a school lunch lady trying to prepare healthful fresh food is apt to get dinged by U.S.D.A. inspectors for failing to serve enough calories; if she dishes up a lunch that includes chicken nuggets and Tater Tots, however, the inspector smiles and the reimbursements flow. The farm bill essentially treats our children as a human Disposall for all the unhealthful calories that the farm bill has encouraged American farmers to overproduce."

Kirtans in Oxford, UK: Our Distinguished Photographers

Our kirtan group is lucky to have two first-class photographers as it's members, who've kindly lent their talents for this blog over the last few years. Claire Williams (above) gained a distinction in her photography diploma last year and is planning to take a degree in photography next. Claire is presently in India taking photos for the Raleigh India Expedition, for young people. You can see her photographs on their blog here

India must be pretty much a photographer's paradise, with so much colour, sunlight and unusual sights.

Pavel Tomanec gained a distinction in his BA in photography last year from Westminster University. And funnily enough - he's also in India.

We are missing them - had nobody to take photos of March's kirtan which is a shame as it was very picturesque. But wish them both well in their future careers in photography.
