Japa Group: With Attention & Without Disturbance

The room is quiet and except for a dog barking and an early morning bird chirping, and except for the electric fan, I’m enclosed in quiet. It’s so important to chant with attention and without disturbance and without agi ta tion of the mind. I’ve been able to do that pretty well so far here in Trinidad.

Maya is so strong that as soon as I am sitting in a solitary place, then I'll think of money and women. Therefore we should live always in assembly and chant Hare Krsna and save ourself from the danger of material falldown.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: '389' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

4:20 A.M.

Yesterday afternoon I did two television interviews and then in the evening sang bhajans and read from Prabhupada’s poetry book to the devotees. I took rest by eight o’clock but woke up at 12:30 with a headache and bitten on the back and arms by mosquitoes despite the mosquito net. Baladeva came in and woke me at 2:30 A.M. I am going to get an alarm clock and set it for 2:30 so that I’ll be sure to wake up at that time every day. I feel much better when I start early. We have had great trouble with the posting of the journal down here in the Caribbean. As of the present moment we don’t know how much of the journal has been posted every day, we don’t have good communications due to the third-world technology. I hope the readers are at least reading some of the journal every day, but I don’t know. It’s very frustrating, and I’m eager to get back to the United States so that I can be more sure that the full journal is being posted every day. But as for japa, it has been going well down here. The devotees leave me alone until lunch time, and so I have all morning to chant my japa. I get up early and this morning, for example, I’ve been wide awake and chanting in my mind at a good pace. The room is quiet, and except for a dog barking and an early morning bird chirping, and except for the electric fan, I’m enclosed in quiet. It’s so important to chant with attention and without disturbance and without agitation of the mind. I’ve been able to do that pretty well so far here in Trinidad. So while the journal posting has been a problem, the japa schedule has not suffered. I hope the same will be true about the japa when we go to Guyana. Today is our last day at the beach house, and then this afternoon I move to Baladeva’s house near the airport and stay there for a day before flying to Guyana.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Gayatri with His Divine Grace' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Prabhupada Smaranam

On this picture Prabhupada is solemnly saying his Gayatri mantras while sitting on the bank of the Yamuna in Vrndavana. Some devotees say that when you say your Gayatri you should cover your hand with your cloth. The rumor is that if the demigods see you chanting Gayatri they will get jealous and do you harm. In this picture Prabhupada is not covering his hand with his cloth. Jayadvaita Swami has pointed out that there are several photos of Prabhupada saying his Gayatri with his hand uncovered. J.S. concludes that the demigods’ jealousy is just a rumor or myth, and that we don’t have to cover our hand doing Gayatri.

Saffron clothes are seen scattered around on the ground. Prabhupada’s disciples are stripped down to their kaupinas and are standing in the Yamuna saying their Gayatris and playing in the water. Sometimes Prabhupada would say that he would not go in the water for Gayatri but just touch it to his head. But then he gradually began to take his clothes off and join his men in the water wearing just a gamsha. It was a great thrill and pastime to play in the Yamuna with Srila Prabhupada. Devotees would gently splash water on Prabhupada’s body and massage his limbs. He would hold his fingers over his nostrils and take a full dip under the water. How kind he was to associate and play with us in such a familiar way.

HH. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 'Joy of Life Eternal' from The Yellow Submarine

www.sdgonline.org. SDGonline Daily updates

Free write

I picked this picture because I wanted to say something about old age. The man on the far right of the picture looks very old, and his hands seem to be shaking. Prabhupada is also elderly, probably in his mid seventies, but he does not look decrepit like the other man. Prabhupada looks calm, soft and gentle. Giriraja, standing in the middle, looks like a young man.

In a pamphlet advertising his Caribbean TV shows, Rajarshi Das has written something interesting about old age. He writes, “We, the eternal souls, are now under the spell of maya or illusion, mistaking ourselves to be bodies. As a person mistakes a rope for a snake and experiences unnecessary fear, so too the eternal soul thinks, ‘I am old and going to die.’” I am now over seventy years old and sometimes I ponder that I will not have long to live. The Bible says a human being is expected to live seventy-five years. I experience a certain joie de vivre (or “joy of life”) and do not want my life to end. So I fear that inevitably I don’t have much time left. (My father died of a heart attack at seventy-eight years old.)

But the statement written by Rajarshi Das, based on scripture, reminds us that we will not die. Only the outer covering of the body will die, whereas the real self, the “I”, the atma, is eternal. Whatever our material age, youth, middle age or old age, we will have to leave the body in a relatively few years. But by developing our love for Krishna and His dear associates, and by living a life in their pure devotional service, we can attain an eternal, youthful spiritual body after the demise of this material one. I should not fear my old age. I should concentrate on my spiritual form as Krishna’s servant and prepare to join Him in the spiritual world where life is full of eternity, knowledge and bliss.

In the ancient Sanskrit language, Kuli refers to a member of a community. Mela is a festive gathering. Combined, Kuli Mela transforms into a celebration of community.

The second-generation Hare Krishnas (known informally as Gurukulis, or just Kulis) from throughout Russia gathered to explore who they are and what they can accomplish. Despite difficult conditions for a festival, including no running water and no electricity, the Gurukulis worked together to celebrate and connect. This short film offers a glimpse into the events of the festival and the hard work it took to pull it off.

Japa Group: When The Heart Is Purified

Hare Krsna my dear devotees, I hope your chanting is focused and you have been able to concentrate on the sound of the mantra. My week has been nice because I could be able to offer some nice service to Lord Ramacandra and also could understand how important is for us to behave properly in this life.
Lord Rama was the best son, best brother and best husband. He was perfect in everything He did and that's why Ayodhya was very blessed because of His father's sacrifice - He could come to this world with His plenary expansions and execute His pastimes with His consort Sita devi....now in this age of Kali the Lord has descended as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and giving us the only sacrifice for this age the congregational chanting of the Hare Krsna maha mantra - just by following this process we can be able to understand the Lord's pastimes and have our hearts purified. Here follows a quote from a lecture given by my gurudev H.H. Giriraj Swami on the appeareance day of Sri Ramacandra.

"In the age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the incarnation of Godhead who constantly sings the names of Krsna. Although His complexion is not blackish, He is Krsna Himself. He is accompanied by His associates, servants, weapons, and confidential companions." SB 11.5.32
Krsna-varnam means that He is in the same category as Krsna, which means that He is Krsna, because no one else can be in the same category as Krsna other than Krsna, and is always singing the glories of Krsna. Still, tvisakrsnam: His color is not blackish like Krsna's in Dvapara-yuga; as described in sastra, it is golden. Sangopangastra-parsadam: He is accompanied by His associates. Every incarnation descends with eternal associates - Rama with Sita, Laksmana, Bharata, Satrughna, and others; Krsna with Nanda, Yasoda, Balarama, Radharani, and others; and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu with Nityananda Prabhu and others. Yajnaih sankirtana-prayair: in Kali-yuga intelligent people (su-medhasah), people who have good intelligence, will worship (yajanti) the Lord by sankirtana-yajna, by the chanting of the holy names of the Lord. And that is the method by which the heart is cleansed (ceto-darpana-marjanam), the demonic mentality of Ravana is vanquished, and the devotional mood of Sita, Laksmana, Bharata, Satrughna, Hanuman, and others - even the squirrel - is manifest. "Pure love for Krsna is eternally established in the hearts of the living entities. It is not something to be gained from another source. When the heart is purified by hearing and chanting, this love naturally awakens." Cc Madhya 22.107
Nitya-siddha krsna-prema - pure love of Godhead exists eternally within the heart. 'Sadhya' kabhu naya - it is not to be gotten from any other source. Sravanadi-suddha-citte - by hearing and chanting the glories of the Lord our consciousness is purified, and karaye udaya - that eternal love is awakened.

Rama-navami
A Talk by Giriraj Swami
April 14, 2008
San Diego

May our hearts be opened to receive the pure names of the Lord that carry all the benedictions and are the Lord Himself, so we can be able to see the Lord face to face and develop pure love for Him.

your servant,

Aruna devi

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: “The King is Coming” by Bill Gaither – Gloria Gaither – Charley Millhoff

The market place is empty,
No more traffic in the streets.
All builders tools are silent,
No more time to harvest wheat.
Busy housewives cease their labors,
In the Courtroom no debate.
Work on earth is all suspended
As the King comes through the gate.

Oh the King is coming,
The King is coming,
I just heard the trumpet sounding
And now his face I see.
Oh, the King is coming,
The King is coming
PRAISE GOD,
He’s coming for me!

All the railroad road cars are empty,
As they rattle down the tracks.
In the newsroom no one watches,
As machines type pointless facts.
All the planes veer off their courses,
No one sits at the controls,
For the King of all the ages
Comes to claim eternal souls.

Oh the King is coming,
The King is coming,
I just heard the trumpet sounding
And now his face I see.
Oh, the King is coming,
The King is coming
PRAISE GOD,
He’s coming for me!

Happy faces line the hallways,
Those whose lives have been redeemed.
Broken homes that He has mended,
Those from prison He has freed.
Little children and the aged,
Hand in hand stand all aglow,
Who were crippled, broken, ruined,
Clad in garments white as snow.

Oh the King is coming,
The King is coming,
I just heard the trumpet sounding
And now his face I see.
Oh, the King is coming,
The King is coming
PRAISE GOD,
He’s coming for me!

I can hear the chariots rumble.
I can see the marching throng.
The flurry of God’s trumpet
Spell the end of sin and wrong.
Regal robes are now enfolding,
Heaven’s grandstand all in place.
Heaven’s choir now assembled
Start to sing Amazing Grace.

Oh, the King is coming,
The King is coming
I just heard the trumpet sounding
And now His face I see
Oh, the King is coming
The King is coming
PRAISE GOD,
He’s coming for me!

Oh the King is coming,
The King is coming,
And now his face I see.
Oh, the King is coming,
The King is coming
PRAISE GOD,
He’s coming for me!
PRAISE GOD
He’s coming for me!

Manoj, Melbourne, AU: 194. Mayapur 2010 – Battlefield hero meetup

It was fun meeting known faces in a place so far far away from home.

The Devotee-Soldier

On one of the days, I met with the devotee-soldier, Partha Sarathi Das. He had just returned from the battle fields of Iraq and was spending few weeks at Mayapur. Although I had never met him before, both of us were aware of each other through our blogs. I had expected someone very tough in mannerisms but Partha Sarathi prabhu was so timid, child-like, friendly and jovial. When a common devotee friend took me to the room where he was sitting, he immediately got up, gave a huge smile and a hug. And whenever he saw a devotee whom he recognized, he would be so pleased to see them. His body language clearly gave the other person the idea that he truly enjoyed their company. While I was with him, I was thinking about all the hardships he faced everyday while at war and how he kept his devotional service and attitude intact. So inspiring.

Partha prabhu, it was great meeting you and spending that time with you at Mayapur. Thank you for all your kinds words and I am so happy that you visit my blog often. I still remember you telling me as soon as we met at Mayapur, “What’s wrong? Haven’t seen any article from you in a while…keep writing! “.

Hope I get to meet you again. Actually, we would love to have you visit us in Melbourne !

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: A Base For War Training, And Species Preservation

Click here to read the full article from the New York Times

"Under crystalline winter skies, a light infantry unit headed for Iraq was practicing precision long-range shooting through a pall of smoke. But the fire generating the haze had nothing to do with the training exercise.

Staff members at the Army post had set the blaze on behalf of the red-cockaded woodpecker, an imperiled eight-inch-long bird that requires frequent conflagrations to preserve its pine habitat.

Even as it conducts round-the-clock exercises to support two wars, Fort Stewart spends as much as $3 million a year on wildlife management, diligently grooming its 279,000 acres to accommodate five endangered species that live here. Last year, the wildlife staff even built about 100 artificial cavities and installed them 25 feet high in large pines so the woodpeckers did not have to toil for six months carving the nests themselves.

The military has not always been so enthusiastic about saving endangered plants and animals, arguing that doing so would hinder its battle preparedness.

But post commanders have gradually realized that working to help species rebound is in their best interest, if only because the more the endangered plants and animals thrive, the fewer restrictions are put on training exercises to avoid destroying habitat."

Lecture – Prahladananda Swami – SB 8.22.1-2

Lecture on Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 8, Chapter 22, Texts 1-2 by Prahladananda Swami.

SB 8.22.1: Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O King, although the Supreme Personality of Godhead was superficially seen to have acted mischievously toward Bali Mahārāja, Bali Mahārāja was fixed in his determination. Considering himself not to have fulfilled his promise, he spoke as follows.

SB 8.22.2: Bali Mahārāja said: O best Personality of Godhead, most worshipable for all the demigods, if You think that my promise has become false, I shall certainly rectify matters to make it truthful. I cannot allow my promise to be false. Please, therefore, place Your third lotus footstep on my head.
